Dharmalars: The Economist!

Are you into Math? if the answer is YES, than you are in for a treat! If the answer is NO, than you can take advantage of the chapter selection function on this episode and skip the boring calculations of the Time Space Continuum, that was explored in The Economist! We get another great segment from Jimmy and a TON of calls on the Dharmaline. Did we mention Karaoke?!

Playlist:
We Have all the Time in the World - Louis Armstrong
Who wants to Live Forever - Queen
Ride Like the Wind - Christopher Cross/Michael McDonald
You Want it Back - Propellerheads
No Hard Feelings - Bloodhound Gang
Sentimental Journey - Esquivel
Africa - "Ghostwatch" Chris!

Looking forward to the karaoke. Do you all have machines or is there something on your computer that permits you to make these lovely recordings?

Love the signs MB posted on the last thread. Someone needs to go to China and steal one of those for Ally to put in her work bathroom.

(repost cos I screwed up my HTML)

I used a program that I use in my other life as the kind of guy who needs to be able to multitrack audio recordings, but I reckon you'd all do okay with which is free.

Open your backing track in Audacity then hit record and you'll record a brand new track over the top of the previous track - sing into your mic and then when you've finished you can bounce it all down to a WAV file. then just run it through an MP3 encoder and you're laughing.

RIGHT I am GIVING UP trying HTML today (even the one earlier has decided not to work too - the preview was perfectly fine... sigh)

I've checked out Audacity:

http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

- it works perfectly and its free.

* open your backing track

* hit record and do some warbling while adjusting your mic level

* when you're happy delete all your recordings except the back track and hit record again

* sing like a fiend

* at the end of the track hit stop and then select the option to render to a WAV file in the file menu.

* MP3 it (this should be easy but let me know if you have any probs)

* email it to Dharmalars

* wait for everyone to be jolly nice.

search for karafun. free karoake program. alls you need now is mp3 and the lyric file. yous can find them online in newgroups under karoake. put both files in player and voila. it will also record for you too. record with headphones on so it doesnt record music. then take audio file of your voice as well as the mp3 into audacity and there you go. you are a pro!

Chris, forget the tv.com contest part of it. Who really gives a rip about that? I just set it up for us here at the blogspot to have a friendly competition. I was thinking we could come up with our own blogspot prize of some sort. Be it worth winning or just something stupid.

Oh and btw, As my avatar indicates, I've been watching The Wire of late. And I concur with what Andrew said on this blog a few months back. One of the best tv shows out there by far! It is excellent! Season 3 was so so good! Some of the best writing around and very smart. The multi-layed storylines put other tv shows to shame with their complexity. Good, good stuff. It's not the type of show that grabs you right away. But once you get in, you're in for good. Check it out.

Jordan said...

Yeah, you have to sign up. But it's nothing you can't fudge. I don't exactly remember, but I don't think you have to even give personal info. Just create a user name and password. Chris JC said...

Thanks for the kind words for my appalling warbling, guys - the fact it's an A1 tip top excellent song helps immensely.

I found two karaoke tracks of Africa. I used the second one which also has additional men singing badly in the chorus and using the wrong words ("I guess it rains down in Africa") which I tried to overcome, but my "bless the" didn't really cut through enough. The first I heard was musically superior but got the chords wrong, and if you give me the choice between wrong words and wrong chords, I'll go with wrong words any day.

Elias - I'm a Southwark lad, so I know The Borough well. I agree though, it has the hint of nickname about it. Isn't it in Monopoly?

(had a look - no it isn't)

Kim - I'm not sure if Taller Ghost Walt is 8 years taller, but nice idea.

I watched Zero Effect the other night. And in it was Cassidy from Lost.

So does anybody have any ideas for a prize for our Oscar pool? The only thing I can think of is we set up a paypal account and everybody throws in like $2 or something. I dunno, just something to make it interesting. Maybe somebody can make some sort of trophy to send to the winner?

I still have yet to listen to listen to the new Dharmalars yet. But all this talk about math is scaring me off a bit. lol. Mathematics frightens me. And question to Chris. When you sing, do you keep your British accent? Or like most British singers, does it inexplicably disappear? lol.

I found a program and a ton of karaoke songs that would be totally rad to do to send in. But here's the thing. I'm embarrassed. Not to send it in or for you guys to hear. But because I live in a very quiet apartment building. And if I were to sing, everybody in the building would hear and think I'm a total lunatic. lol.

Jordan said...

So now Walt doesn't look old enough? lol. Poor kid.

Chris JC said...

It's odd that we do that, isn't it, Jordan?

I sing an American song, so I do an American accent.

If it had been appropriate to do so, and I'd found a karaoke track for Rialto's The Underdogs like I'd threatened, then you'd have heard a British accent (probably a couple, as that track opens opportunity for a couple of different delivery styles from one section to the next). I was gonna link to it in iTunes, but it's not in the US or UK store.

And, of course, if I'd done MacArthur Park (not in the UK store), I'd have done it in the manner of a wonderful sozzled Irish actor whose son is in Lady in the Water.

Trevor McFur said...

If it's a cash prize, could it be rolled over into the eventual Official Scott & Steve March Madness pool?

re: the Time Shift on the Island

I'm listening to the Dharmamath right now, so forgive me if this is answered later in the chapter - but couldn't the time difference simply be a time shift and not a time dilation? Meaning - couldn't time on the island be running at the same rate as non-island time, just shifted by 30 mins?

That said, a time DILATION (i.e. 1 min. island time = 30 mins. non-island time) COULD account for Walt growing, and Alpert not aging, but I think there could be other explanations for those things (...which I'm trying to work out right now :) )

8 years older crowd, the math is right but the premise and conclusion are wrong.

do you think that the Oceanic 6 come back and say "uh... we've been floating in the middle of the ocean for eight years. oceanic's plane seat really CAN be used as a flotation device in case of emergency!"? prolly not.

besides three years of offIslandTime equals three years of onIslandTime as evidenced by the fact that it was three years between Jack and Desmond meeting up again after Shannon's Dad's death (Sarah's accident) in 2001 for both Jack and Desmond even though one had spent the time on the island and the other was in California.

unless the hatch implosion thing fucked up the temporal mahooziewows on the Island.

i think it was Mattastic who wrote in to The Transmission with the theory that the payload's time offset was caused by NOT coming to the Island by the "precise coordinates" that Faraday and Linus keep talking about. i like that. not sure i like the rest of the theory that coming in from different ways causes different time offsets. but the first part of the theory floats my boat.

/through the use of time travel, a grumpy old man sick of the time dilation theory playing on his lawn :p

PalmerEldritch said...

"couldn't time on the island be running at the same rate as non-island time, just shifted by 30 mins?"

ooooh! awesome, mb.

constantly shifting 31 minutes into the future? wasn't there a doctor who choose your own adventure with something similar?

tom baker!

memphish said...

I liked Mattastic's idea on The Transmission too. I could certainly understand it better than all that math.

The huge problem with the Island running on a different time at least prior to the Hatch implosion is the dates on The Pearl printout that Desmond looks at in LTDA. Of course, it could be the case that the implosion has created this new problem, but that doesn't explain Alpert. I also don't understand why Ben aged on the Island from kid until now and Alpert apparently hasn't for some time despite the fact that both seem to travel on and off the Island. And I don't think it's because Alpert was born there.

Holli

PalmerEldritch said...

its cuz Alpert is the LOSTiverse equivalent of a Numenorean (sp?!). he's a native of the Island. mommy and daddy alpert were natives too. they're special and all that. descended from the statue makers. check that dude's toes!

either that or the Island digs men who wear eyeliner.

which is cool too.

mb said...

I didn't know there were Doctor Who choose your own adventures - damn!

mb said...

Maybe someone already posted a link to this and I forgot, but Doc Arzt has some thoughts on the time shift. I agree with him that the time shift and the importance of bearings when coming and going from the island are probably linked.

Chris JC said...

UK used and new prices start at £20.94 - that's over forty bucks, sirs.

It's at times like this I have to remind myself that we get swearing and nudity on network TV and hope that makes me feel better.

mb said...

This theory (it downloads as a .pdf document FYI) got me thinking as well - another option is that there is a time distortion of some sort SURROUNDING the island but not directly affecting people on the island (like the eye of a hurricane), but there are certain spots (bearings) you can enter/exit through safely.

The... Pegasus?

(it's been a while)

Chris JC said...

It IS The Pegasus!

Hooray for my rubbish old brain!

Trevor McFur said...

OK, maybe I should have a few drinks before posting this one...

What if the time shift (1 minute = 30 minutes) didn't start until after the Hatch imploded at the end of season 2 ... we know that SOMETHING time travelish happened because of that implosion, evidenced by Desmond's time travel that immediately followed. That way, off island Walt would only be a couple of years older rather than 8 years older (didn't bother to figure out the math, but I'd guess 3 years or so, which adds right up to how much older MDK is now). So pushing the button kept the time displacement from happening. So it's only been in season 3 and beyond that Dez & the Losties have been 'off time' with the rest of the world. Dharma were the folks who put in the computer and the button in the late 70s/early 80s, so prior to then, the island was on diplaced time. So Alpert in his sailor clothes could have crashed on the Black Rock 2 or 300 years ago, but still appear only a few years older on the island. What I can't figure out is how to tie in Ben's aging at a different rate then Alpert even after they're on the island together.

My brain hurts.

- i subscribe to the interference field rather than consitent time dilation. As evidenced by Ben & Ralph turning themselves around trying to do the math, time dilation is too complicated to explain to a casual audience and to keep straight their damn selves.

- watching the newest OnDemand episode of The Wire now. Glad to see Jordan up on it. I just picked up the soundtrack last week too. It's a really good collection of rock, soul, hiphop, go-go and scored pieces with some classic soundbites from the show between tracks.

- is it Thursday yet?

mb and andrew, right on. i like the "eye of the hurricane" explanation. whatever surrounds the island fucks you up if you try to go through (desmond kept running into the island over and over again, the payload was late) and there are very specific ways out (which dan and ben know about).

also, the field (?) must hide the island from prying eyes except when there's a electro-magnetic event (season 2 finale with the brazilian dudes in the icy tundra).

ralph, apparently, lindsey lohan (lindsay lohan?) is celebrating your birthday in her birthday suit. :\

i think that's how she celebrates everyone's birthdays.

Andrew, That soundtrack sounds cool. Do they have all the different versions of "Down in the Hole"? That is one of the coolest things I've seen a tv show do. If people don't know what I'm talking about. Each season has the same song as the theme for the opening credits, but by a different artist. Kinda like how Weeds had different artists do it's theme. But each season on The Wire has it's own. Gives each year it's own vibe/feel. And it's a really cool song. I think it was originally written by Tom Waits. Not sure though.

Looks like most everybody has signed up for the Oscar pool. Cept Palmer, Holli, Ralph, and Aimee. What are you waiting for people? Don't worry about not knowing what you're talking about. None of us do. Odds are the winner will be somebody who didn't even see one film.

memphish said...

All right. Jordan peer pressured me into the Oscar pool though I know jack-shit about most of those movies. In return I, like Trevor, want a March Madness bracket. I don't know much about that either, but I know more about it than I know about Art Direction and Short Films with foreign titles.

- Jordan - there are 4 versions of "Way Down In The Hole" on the disc. It doesn't have this season's version by Steve Earl (who is also an actor on the show as Bubbles' sponsor), which sucks because i like it a lot.
Here's the Amazon link with the track list: [Clicky]

- just saw Will Arnett in a commercial for "Semi-Pro," the latest Will Ferrell movie. I love Will Arnett from Arrested Development but he's been in a ton of terrible movies and from imdb it looks like he's booked solid for the next few years with more bullshit (except for the rumored Arrested Development movie of course) We need to get to work writing a script to make him the star he needs to be. Anybody have any pitches?

You know what I suddenly realized from filling out my Oscar picks? That King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters wasn't nominated for Best Doc! What a bunch of bullshit!

MB - it would absoutely be cheaper to do that (Leo Getz: "They FUCK YOU with postage and packing!") - it's just a little paperback.

I'll drop you a PM over at the BBS.

Seriously, is Jumper really that good? Hayden Christensen might be, no, most likely is, the worst actor I have ever seen. I don't know if I can deal with a whole movie driven by him. The only thing that saved (sort of) Star Wars is that he wasn't in them the whole time.

Rrb said...

I don't understand this anonymous stuff
Is'nt redrabbitblue Anonymouse now if I said my name was Bra..... then i would no longer be anonymous..Am I correct in my thinking..
Thank You Kim and all for the above Math, I was sitting here with a caculator in one hand and a gun in the other..neither choice seemed good to me..

Trevor McFur said...

I thought that Hayden Christensen was really good in Shattered Glass. I don't know what happened to that guy, because he's been awful in everything else.

Trevor McFur said...

Boobies.

Stephanie said...

Everyone is under the impression that Hayden Christensen is a poor actor because most have only seen him struggle to deliver Lucas' bad dialogue. Check him out in Life is a House. It's to Star Wars as Disturbia is to Transformers. The big directors put their young stars in a small movie to get the hype going for their big blockbuster to come later that year. But stick Life is a House in your queue if not only for Kevin Kline and Kristen Scott Thomas.

Stephanie said...

Sorry, it's Life AS a House.

Trevor McFur said...

I've never seen Life as a House. I think that it's more than just Lucas' bad dialogue, though ... Natalie Portman and Ewan MacGregor had the same awful dialogue but came out of those films relatively unscathed.

Stephanie said...

You have a good point, Trev.

Damn it! I'm trying to say Jumper only got 15% on Rotten Tomatoes. That's less than First Sunday.

Trevor McFur said...

Is it less than Norbit?

Jordan said...

But Jumper has Hayden Christensen in it...er, wait.

Rrb said...

jump her?

Anonymous said...

Jumper was terrible. Really lazy movie. I can't say for sure about Ben and Ralph, but my general impression was that they were less than enthusiastic when we left the theater.

Perhaps they will talk about it on this week's show.

Trevor McFur said...

Jump Her is the porno version.

I went to see There Will Be Blood instead.

I'd like to add to the Life As A House goodness. There's a Lost connection, our good ol' Boone is in it too.

A Lost Moment(really 2 for 1)
Not many Lost podcasts to listen to last night at work, except 4 J&J great as always.
So I've listened to the NPR movie review for a while..and noticed the other day they have like 30 other's.
So I downloaded a few yesterday and was listen to i think the sun.\mon. News(did some research actually NPR Enviroment) and the second story was Pres.Bush visits Tansania(for Palmer so he can post more maps of tasmania Ect.for me} I won't look up proper spelling but you all no where I'm going with this..So I get a laugh he's there for some aid stuff and I'm seein him on his Knees diggin for the darma collar.ahah(a lost moment}
So that gave me a laugh then two head lines later
something like this not exact( i looked that up also pretty much exact quote} " The Polar Bear could be the first species to be put on the indangered species list, do to Global warming"
Now that was a defient Lost Moment...You cant Globaly warm a polar Bear any more then to put them in the Tropics or the desert..So all in all in ten minutes I took 2 normal news issues and created a whole lost reality in my head damm you lost I need time to think of other things ..Maybe even the polar bears in reality!

Finally finished Dharmalars - excellent as usual.

Chris - just...f-ing awesome kareoke! You've inspired me - but I have no idea what to do. Maybe me and the Ace will have to belt one out.

Oh - and who was the a-hole caller from LA insulting Producer Ryan? That pissed me off. Whoever you are - if you were joking and just razzing I take back my ire - but otherwise, nobody needs nor wants to hear you insult our friends. Jeez!

Also, in case my audio comment gets played on TLI, I want to apologize if it sounds like I am taking credit for the ideas we were all bandying about on here yesterday re: the time shift. I just wanted Kim and Aimee to talk about it so I sent an mp3 to them.

and...since were all thinking it apparently....

Chris JC said...

MB - in honour of Arrested Development, you and The Ace should probably do Afternoon Delight.

IF YOU DARE!

Lucas is notorious fr not getting a decent performance out of even top notch directors. Maybe Christensen really needs to have a role that resonates with him.

On a separate note, I'm always amazed Jumper wasn't retitled in the UK, as to us a jumper is a big chunky woollen sweater - a role that Christensen might be perfect for.

Chris JC said...

or even top-notch ACTORS... (duh)

Faster and more intense.

[ally] said...

OMG that would be hilarious if MB or anyone would sing Afternoon Delight with a relative.

I got pretty mad about that call about producer ryan, i mean, WTF! i think it's endearing, and the show would not be the same without it.

did that one caller say his dharmalars shirt got stolen? what has the world come to...

Rrb said...

That very episode I was thinkin Ryan should get his own mike (the first 3fer?)just what I wasthinkin! Also maybe that dude should listen to archives and maybe he would truely understand Ryan's laughabilty I jumped in...in the middle just before the Lars..and did'nt truly understand the power of the ryan till he was gone after episode 6 or 10...The Ryan Laugh Was totaly missed for me..its like tv when they hold up a sign to the crowd sayin"LAUGH"
AllinAll Ryan is just as important as Ralph and Ben (no offense boys)

Rrb said...

Thats such a drunk blog i hope youall can decifer..

memphish said...

I nearly shot sushi through my nose when I read the Afternoon Delight suggestion. Go for it MB, complete with the awkward stopping when the lightbulb goes on.

And speaking of Boobs. I can't believe Ben didn't use his calculator to spell Boobs. That was a favorite part of Extras for me.

I have to say I think this was a fantastic episode of the Dharmalars. The jokes were good; the ideas about LOST were good; the giggling was fantastic. Thanks Dharmalars! Tharmalars!

Michael and Maebe singing Afternoon Delight is one of my top-favorite moments of AD. I think that's the same episode where Buster uses the crane to pick banana-clad GOB up when he gets trapped under some lumber.

OMG - Afternoon Delight - lol. Man, I'm not sure I could sing that one with the Ace, I think I might feel nauseous from the wrongness of that - lmao!

[ally] said...

well i think that's why it worked on AD, the fact that they didn't know the wrongness of it.

another suggestion: baby got back. equally as wrong.

Trevor McFur said...

Those Cadbury eggs are great. I like the way that they strip off the wrapper each time before offing themselves.
