word up.
i'm watching pop-up "Egg Town" right now. So far the captions haven't delivered any revelations.
some stuff i'm noticing on rewatch.

- Ben's read "Valis" but the book club didn't think he'd like "Carrie". I figured he was a literature snob, but Philip K Dick doesn't really rate among the snooty.

- i know Sawyer's request for coffee was really a request for some alone time with Kate, but Claire was holding her Bay-bee and Kate doesn't even budge. jerk.

- Kate's lawyer wanted to put a 2 year old kid on the stand to be a character witness for her.
"how long have you known this woman?" "this many!"

MB said...

lol - excellent Andrew. Good points.

Talk to you all late tonight or tomorrow!

Ralph- said...

i was just about to post this thread!

enjoy the show you East Coast lamers!

i will watch it in 4 hours.

memphish said...

I think the bay-bee was more to sit in the courtroom probably in a sweater like this.

I'm actually thinking Aaron was separately represented by Barry Zuckercorn and thus managed to be in court to provide support.

des reminds me of a certain classic convenience store clerk from a movie of which i am named after.

IM NOT EVEN SUPPOSED TO BE HERE TODAY!!!!

Silent Bob said...

i bet that guy is minknowski. and i bet that thing that happened to dan happened to des.

Brennan said...

Is this the sickness that Danielle talked about?

This episode is crazy!!!

Trevor McFur said...

What the hell is going on in this show?

Silent Bob said...

this has to be the weirdest lost crossover ever.

what the fuck. i really like this. this i so confusing.

Silent Bob said...

im with trevor. and, ooh. it could be the sickness. they need to explain that eventually. why not now?

Trevor McFur said...

Did Faraday and Desmond just pull a Bill and Ted?

Trevor McFur said...

What

the

FUCK!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Silent Bob said...

dharmalars, or lost initiative, or someone, please play the song "luno" by bloc party, or the cover by DFA 1979 on your podcast. besides the fact that its a pretty good song, the chorus is

"AND YOURE NOSE IS BLEEEEDDDIIIINN! AND YOUR NOSE IS BLEEEDIIIIIIIIIINNNN!"

that would be funny.

FutureAlly said...

OMG! I LOVE LOST!

this was the most awesomest episode yet, this season. leave it to desmond to not disappoint with a good episode.

i cried like a bitch when he was talking to penny (finally!)

sayid is the fucking man! in like 2 minutes he's like, ok here's the phone.

Silent Bob said...

yes, i think they played a bill and ted

we'll already leave the keys there, and they'll be there when we get there!

i love that movie.

so, this is kinda some flashes before desmonds eyes. its odd. and dan is experiencing the same thing. i guess that explains the crying at the tv? maybe? probably not.

its christmas eve. i wish this episode corresponded with real time, and aired in december. oh well.

Stephanie said...

What a completely enjoyable episode. Yes, I think that's the sickness Roussou's crew ailed from. I hate the fact that Fisher Stevens so quickly exited the show.

Silent Bob said...

yeah. call me a pussy, but that scene with des and pen was really cute.

yeah. im a pussy. i know it.

Silent Bob said...

yeah. i liked him. what was he in? i recognized him, but my severe laziness forced me to stay away from his imdb page. im sure we'll see him again somehow.

Mike Campbell said...

not only of this season, in this humble viewers eyes, of the series. It was awesome. They explained a lot and i felt the cross cutting was done perfectly. The auction scene was just enough to get your mind racing in a million other places then it is already thinking about.

flawless lost

gillian said...

That was amazing! Well, amazingly confusing at first, anyhow.

But then I remembered that Desmond travels through time and that yes, he was close to the magnetic thingymajigg that may have triggered this loss of memory...

Ngah! I loved it though.

SadAce said...

holy shit...
one of my favorite lost episodes EVER.

Mike Campbell said...

my only problem was how the door opened? really no one saw that. and please if thats the only episode fisher 'The Plague' stevens is going to be in i will be a sad panda.

SadAce said...

Flawless is F---ing right.
I got really teary at the end myself. I'll admit it.
Desmonds story is amazing.

FutureAlly said...

was the scene cute enough to make you cry?

Trevor McFur said...

i thought it was great, and mind-blowing. I gotta admit that they're really reading a thin line for me -- telling Dez in the future to do something in the past so that he can do something later in the future really is a little too close to Bill & Ted for me -- but it's so entertaining and well-done that I don't really seem to mind. I really have no clue what the heck is going on anymore.

Trevor McFur said...

And the final scene ... there was just a little bit of dust in my eyes.

SadAce said...

I heard a while ago, they expected this episode to have one of the most reviewed moments on tivo in history...I think it is the equations in faradays book and on the chalk boards.
I can't wait to check out the high res screen caps

andrew. said...

holy moly! good episode.
this even felt more tonally consistent with LOST than "Flashes Before Your Eyes" even as it featured a rat ray.

- now we know why Dan wanted to call Minkowski but Frank later told him to hang up if Minkowski answered.

- How the hell do they get Desmond's hair to work in the past and present? It can't be a wig on island considering the track record (including disshoveled professor Dan)

- confession time: who's screen got all blurry like you were looking through a rainy window when Desmond & Penny were talking on the phone?

FutureAlly said...

"i thought it was great, and mind-blowing."

that's what she said.

and yeah it was! i kinda spoiled myself and knew it was a desmond flashfoback tonight, but it was still great.

i was screaming at penny, just give him the fucking number! i was afraid he was gonna go "back" without the number.

Mike Campbell said...

so is that the sickness that Russeau's team got and that everyone is worried about. cause all the boat people are worried about it? if they bring people back to the boat do all but 6 die? crazy on you

Trevor McFur said...

Independant of the time travel stuff, which I can't wrap my head around, what about that auction scene? I caught them saying that one of the Hanso's put the diary up for auction ... was it Magnus? Were any of the bidders recognizable besides CW?

Stephanie said...

Someone opened the door for Des. Who opened the door? Michael?

Trevor McFur said...

Damn right that's what she said.

Mike Campbell said...

I think the first letter of the hanzo name was T. that book must have been from the island. I loved the auction scene

Trevor McFur said...

I think that Frank opened the door.

andrew. said...

the door opening was Minkowski pulling the Bill&Ted, which is why he had the nose bleed. That was the implication anyway

FutureAlly said...

"- now we know why Dan wanted to call Minkowski but Frank later told him to hang up if Minkowski answered."

i'd forgotten about that, that's a good point, andrew.

Brennan said...

Who here thinks we haven't seen the last of Minkowski aka Fischer Stevens? I got the feeling that he might show up in some flashbacks/time travels.

Does the Black Rock ledger hold any significance to the story, or is it just a tie back?

I loved the transitions from 1996 to 2004 with the editing. Very cool.

San Dimas High School Football Rules!!!

FutureAlly said...

kablamo!

Trevor McFur said...

But if Minikowski was on the boat in the past and in the future, wouldn't he have had a constant?

Brennan said...

Minkowski didn't know about needing a constant, thats why he died. At least that's my understanding.

Trevor McFur said...

He also said that he was on a Ferris Wheel.

FutureAlly said...

yeah so whereever he was jumping to and from is not on the boat, because he mentioned the ferris wheel. unless the boat they're on used to have some kind of carnival or something. LOL, how's that for a crackpot theory.

andrew. said...

This is definitely some "Slaughterhouse-Five" time-unsticking.

andrew. said...

Wow! so i never turned off my TV after LOST, and Eli Stone has been on in the background this whole time. I'm pretty sure the doctor from the freighter is now on Eli Stone?!? is he unstuck from time too!

Silent Bob said...

i didnt cry. i just had something in both of my eyes.

but seriously, no i didnt. i felt a bit of a choke, though. the only time lost made me burst into tears crying was the last charlie episode when he says goodbye to hurley.

Trevor McFur said...

Is anyone actually watching that Eli Stone? It looks terrible.

Silent Bob said...

i need to read slaughterhouse 5. im reading the 3rd policeman now. sadly, i was spoiled on the ending, but its just fun and wacky enough that i still want to read it.

Silent Bob said...

i want to sue god for allowing those in charge of eli stone's creation to flourish.

yeah. it looks dumb.

Trevor McFur said...

Was Dan crying in episode 2 because he had just jumped back in time?

DenAss said...

So the other Losties that were recently exposed to high levels of radiation or electromagnetism are Charlie, Eko, and Locke.

2 of 3 are dead, so perhaps the only other character that would have his consciousness travel through time would be John Locke. I imagine he would be hard pressed to find a constant from two different points in time. Unless his time travels are to the future rather than the past. hmm...

I must say, I loved this episode. Even more than "Flashes Before Your Eyes" - Love me some Desmond

Just think how kick-ass seasons 2 and 3 would have been if the writers knew where their end-point was. Ever since the end was defined, the show has really stepped it up a notch.

DenAss said...

I do think Dan's crying, and his "caretaker" have something to do with his consciousness traveling through time.

Now we get to see him try to locate Desmond. Looking forward to THAT episode.

p.s. Did anyone else think they might going to "off" Desmond tonight?

"Was Dan crying in episode 2 because he had just jumped back in time?"

Dan was crying because he saw this episode in his mind, from the future.

:D

PalmerEldritch said...

well, i leave to watch a little LOST and i come back to 56 new posts. yeesh! good going, folks.

ok, so, yeah. Desmond's consciousness jumps through time in his own body. but his body doesn't jump through time. interesting. he randomly quantum leaps into himself. is this why he got dishonorably discharged from the army?

widmore bid on T. Hanso's book ledger from the black rock (captained by Magnus Hanso, methinks). cool. is T. Hanso Alvar's baby boy?

do you think Widmore didnt want Penny hooking up with Desmond because HE KNOWS THAT DESMOND WILL BECOME UNSTUCK IN TIME?!!!! hee hee. fun to theorize.

PalmerEldritch said...

desmond's hair in 1996 is a wig. you can see the glue on his scalp.

did desmond have chest hair stubble?

is desmond's Island hair the inspiration for Sayid's future-hair?

PalmerEldritch said...

oh. and did the random boat phone run on direct current and that's why it needed to be hooked up to a battery? cuz the rest of the boat would be alternating, right? and couldn't sayid have used a radio's power supply to convert the AC to DC and run the phone off of the ship's main power?

i think they did something similar on Mythbusters. :)

anyone understand anything about electricity? i can use a voltmeter and that's about it.

PalmerEldritch said...

oh. and the Desmond/Penny love story is infinitely more interesting than any romantic story with Kate.

besides the Kate/Juliet/Dharma whipped topping love story.

DenAss said...

Sayid probably just alternated the current the same way he alternated that one dude's neck with that break dancing move.

Nice "Slaughterhouse-Five" comparison Andrew.

Brennan said...

Ok, so Desmond went a little crazy because he was at ground zero when the swan station blew up. Maybe anyone close to the beach at the time are affected too. Of the people that we know are the Oceanic 6, they were all on the other side of the island. Jack, Kate and Hurley were at the dock, and Sayid was on a boat on the other side. Maybe it is too risky to bring anyone else off the island for they might go crazy/time jump.

The only thing I can think of for Aaron is at the time on the island, he's only 2-3 months old. His young self won't know what's going on and won't remember, but it would be a trip for his older self for sure.

Superbium.

Some transatlantic problems - the auctioneer saying "one hundred fifty" instead of "one hundred and fifty" (although that does slip later), and the fact that Penny seems to live in 1890 London.

There's a Cheyne Walk not ten minutes on foot from my house.

If Desmond one day randomly wandered out of the Scots Guards and buggered off, I suppose it could at least contribute to his eventual court martial.

Daniel's memory loss "like that's going to happen" - this could indeed explain it, and maybe it'll flood back now.

Fisher Stevens. After all that build up... bye! (Although when one of our characters has cause to go on a ferris wheel after the island, we may well see him again).

Oh, and whaddaya know? Penny's Boat.

I got teary at the telephonic reunion - I'm a big girl where Desmond is involved.

Brilliant.

Best. Episode. Ever?

Who knows - but certainly one of the best.

Finally... what is it? Flashforward? Partial Daniel flashback? or neither of these things?

So was Desmond traveling into the past, or into the future? And I got the very strong impression that Daniel remembered his conversation with Dez in the past (and had some notes in his journal to back it up); why didn't Dez remember it?

Trevor McFur said...

One other thing I liked in last night's ep ... Daniel puts on the lead apron because of the radiation exposure, Dez asks about his head, and Daniel just says, "Yeah..."

FutureAlly said...

Thanks, Chris, I hadn't realized that apparently it is Penny's Boat.

After Desmond said his "I love yous" and "I'm sorrys", I was afraid he was gonna drop dead. I'm glad he didn't and I hope we get more episodes about him or like this one, again.

/i still can't get over that wig, or the fact that he's cuddling a mouse.

FutureAlly said...

wouldn't you be wanting to protect your head first?

or is he thinking that bad wig will work as a helmet?

faraday was kinda hippie-like in the past, you could've sworn desmond jumped back to the 60s/70s and not late 90s.

Stephanie said...

What was the reason for Widmore leaving the water running? To show how short Des' flashes were getting? That his time was running out?
Why did Frank point out that the phones could only call each other? To show Des HAD to get to the com room to contact Penny?
I believe if Des and Penny don't get a happy ending, the fans will be more disappointed than if the smoke monster is never explained.

Trevor McFur said...

I figured that he left the water running because he's a dick and expected that Dez would turn it off for him.

PalmerEldritch said...

or he KNOWS THAT DESMOND IS A TIME JUMPER!!! and was using it to effect.

that's my crackpot theory. Charles "Chuckulicious" Widmore knows that Desmond is Unstuck in Time and THAT'S why he doesn't want Penny to date him. crackpot!!!

RRB, I made some big posting last season about the difference between dramatic time travel and comedy time travel. In comedy time travel, it's ok to say, "We need our keys! After this is all done, we gotta remember to go back in time and put our keys right here!" That's a big no-no in dramatic time travel, because it's completely ridiculous. Daniel telling Dez to go back in time, get on a train, find past Daniel, give him the info he needs to make his flux capacitor work, so that past Daniel gives Dez the info that he needs to get Penny's phone number, so that he suddenly has it in the future might not quite be Bill and Ted, but it's really close. But they did such a great job of it last night that they somehow pulled it off. I wasn't making a comment about the quality of the episode, just noticing the similarity.

Wow....what to say. So good - and I think all the due reverence to this episode has already been said by you all better than anything I can come up with, so I'll just leave it at - WOW!

Right there with most others with the bitch cryin' - that was easily one of the top 2 most emotional moments of the series (with Boone's death IMO).

RE: Trevor's question:
"I got the very strong impression that Daniel remembered his conversation with Dez in the past (and had some notes in his journal to back it up); why didn't Dez remember it?"
It seems like the writers are going with the idea that a person's timeline is somewhat dynamic, and that when you change something in the "past" you can be aware that the change occurred in the present. At least that's what I thought was happening when Daniel looked through his journal at the end and found the note to himself about Desmond being his constant. I thought he was actively looking for that note b/c he knew it hadn't been there previously (assuming he knows what is in his journal page by page pretty well).

for the Doctor Whovians - I was pretty heavily reminded of Blink

/"Wibbly Wobbly Timey Wimey"

MB said...

lmao - I laughed at that one too Trevor.

RRB I assume you were meaning:
"Thank You Ally! But future Penny..."
but the way that came out was priceless.

So I didn't get to watch LOST last night. Was it any good?

Just kidding. What a great mind-blowing episode. The auction scene alone with all it's Hanso, Black Rock, Widmore stuff was enough to make any obsessive crow with all the things that have linked back in -- finally.

I wish the episode had stopped before the last Dan scene. I was bawling during the Penelomond (is that the right word DenAss?) scene. The Dan thing just left me confused.

If you haven't read Slaughterhouse Five and you want to know what's going on with Desmond, it's a quick read, under 200 small pages. If you ever wanted to read a LOST book, this could be your one.

I for one am so glad it's consciousness time travel and not bodily time travel. At least I don't have to worry about Desmonds colliding in the past, or future, or present.

One thing I don't get is why Minkowski and friend got so sick so fast and yet no one else on the Island has suffered this problem. I get that they lacked a constant. What I don't get is how they got apparently more exposure than Locke who doesn't appear to be unstuck in time, but merely appears to be insane.

Looking forward to the podcasts and the musical choices for them. As well as more Dharmalars Karaoke.

memphish said...

Just heard an interesting listener theory on J&J. They think the journal may be Richard Alpert's.

Holli

MB said...

Holli,

I think the issue is, in order to get unstuck like Desmond you have to:

1. have been exposed to a magnetic field (I think that's what Dan said) recently.

2. passed through whatever weird-ass temporal-shifting barrier surrounds the island.

Sayid wasn't affected like Desmond b/c he hadn't been living next to a huge magnet (in the Swan Hatch) for years like Dez.

Minkowski said he and his crewmate (can't remember name) got bored and went out on the ship's tender ( like a dinghy I guess - here's the wiki entry for the term ) to get a look at the island, after which they both started experiencing the time shifts. So, I assume they passed through the barrier or whatever it is.

Also, I think bodily travel is coming in some way or another - hence Anthony Cooper and the "Magic Box" and the rabbits in the Orchid Video

memphish said...

MB, I agree we're going to get body shifting at some point like the Tunisian polar bear.

But what was Minkowski and dude exposed to? Also, you can only escape the pull of the Island if you know the right heading. How could they get close enough and be freaked out and head back just right? And how did they get closer to whatever than Sayid who spent some time in the Hatch and was actually on the Island when the sky turned purple. And why have they been exposed to something, but not Frank? That's what I can't put together yet.

Holli

MB said...

Meant to add that Dan said "exposed to radiaton" as well as magnetism I think - anyone else remember? I'm trying to look it up now.
Also, I assume Minkowski had been exposed to some radiation or magnets working with communications equipment - or maybe there's something else on the ship or in his past that did it.

Damn this is good Lost

Jordan from the 206 said...

Hmmmmm. I guess I wasn't on the same wave length as most people here. While a nice moment, I didn't find the final scene overly emotional in any way. Guess I'm just dead inside.

Holli, so we are thinking that it is consciousness time travel? That would be cool for me. It's actually the way I interpreted it during the ep. The only thing that made me think I might've been wrong was the final scene with Faraday and his journal. It sorta seemed to me that the note was new now that Des changed the past. Overall for the story and the show, I'd rather it be mind time traveling to past memories or times than actual time jumping. Far less absurd. But I'm not so sure what it is.

memphish said...

Jordan, You are a regular Michael Bluth. You probably can't imitate a chicken either.

As for the consciousness travel, I'm just quoting Doc Daniel Brown.

Holli

PalmerEldritch said...

"so we are thinking that it is consciousness time travel?"

according to Danny Boy Faraday during the rat race, it IS just the conscious mind unsticking itself from time.

which was a relief to me over the idea of bodily time travel. although, i have no idea why "just yer consciousness travels through time" is somehow more plausible than bodily travelling through time...

yeah...

"desmond travels through time."
"what?! that's crazy talk!"
"ok, how about his conscious mind jumps back and forth through time after it gets unstuck in time?"
"that's much more plausible."

I'm assuming that the sky turning purple (and the little time Sayid was in the Swan) is not enough exposure to trigger the unstuck-ness - but I guess we'll eventually see if Jack or the other Oceanic 6 experience anything when they try and leave.

Also, there is that bearing of 325˚ that Michael left on that I assume Ben was saying was safe (but maybe not?). Perhaps that's the same "hole" in the barrier that the sub would come and go through. Ben mentioned an underwater "beacon" to Locke (Man from Tallahassee??) that allowed the sub to return to the island - I assume that that is what guided the sub in?
I think I saw that Frank was flying on a bearing of 305˚ (someone correct me if this is wrong - I couldn't find a screen cap of the paper he was looking at in the helicopter), so perhaps this was why Dez did not pass through the barrier safely.

This is my problem with the Minkowski sneaks on and off the Island/near and away from the Island. Desmond sailed for 2 weeks and couldn't get through the barrier. Juliet knows that if Sayid, Sun and Jin have the Elizabeth they can't get out of the Island's reach either. So how could Minkowski and dude who are essentially going off the reservation with their sneak out after the parents are asleep escapade get in and out of the barrier. And if Sayid didn't have enough exposure just by being on the Island or Frank either for that matter, why did Minkowski and dude. Were they recruited to the Freighter from the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant?

I buy the idea that you need radiation or electromagnetic exposure plus passing through the barrier, but I don't see how we have that info. on George and his wayward body-bagged pal.

methinks george and his pals were subjected to radio waves all day in the communication area and then snuck off and got rebuffed by the MagicalBarrier(tm) around the Island. which caused them to go FruitLoops.
