Wow - I'd never have guessed that the smoke from the freighter explosion, mixed with the souls of those who died in the blast, went back in time and became the Smoke Monster!

Ryan, Morgan gave up on "Retards" as she calls Heroes long ago. See? She's much smarter than her mom.

the T dot is about to have a Pillow Fight League. does this mean we'll finally get our TLI pillow fight?

probably not.

I only heard it once in passing. That's the kind of thing the network likes to advertise loudly. So, maybe it's not true.

i just hope we get Motand losing his arm. and i hope Alirio(?) is right about Jin chopping his arm off.

and i hope it goes a little something like this. *spoilers from LucasArts' "The Dig" from 1995*

I feel obligated to repost my link from the end of the last thread, the 86 LA Dodgers' music video, "Baseball Boogie". But this time I'm also going to include the LA Rams video, "Ram It". Tell me if anybody picks up on just a tinge of innuendo. And again, what the hell was wrong with the mid-80's? Specifically sports teams in LA. lol.

Steph, If somebody dies this ep, you're going to be thrown in the blogspot spoiler hole. Tisk, Tisk.

As for Heroes last night. It wasn't horrible, I guess. Wasn't that great either. The show is trying to totally ignore some previous mis-steps. Which is both bad and good. Bad in that it makes the show feel so disjointed and sloppy. But good in that they are slowly fixing some of the past problems. For example, Peter being too powerful. Bit of a spoiler, but I doubt anybody really cares. When the show first started and we learned that Peter could mimic people's powers, I remember thinking, "Oh, he's like Rogue from X-Men". Well, not quite. He didn't need to touch them to get their power, and he also retained the power forever, which IMO was extremely stupid. Now, they've changed it, so he is basically exactly like Rogue. Has to touch them, and only one power at a time. So they are slowly figuring out how to correct some of their stupider mistakes. But in the process, it really feels sloppy given the sharp change in course and straight up changes in character archs. And yeah, the writing still isn't so hot. But I'm still holding out hope for when Bryan Fuller's ep's start. Guess we'll see how that goes.

- In order to leave the island to track down the Oceanic 6, Locke turns the Donkey Wheel again. like Ben, he was transported to a different time and place, Humboldt County, California in 1996. Aware that he can't change the past, Locke bides his time until 2004 by joining a commune. He wants to shoot that lying cop, Eddie, but the natural flow of history won't let him pull the trigger.

- Turns out that Christian Shepherd has been skipping through time, impregnating ladies all over the world, raising a super army of gifted people. He has the forumula for a world destroying virus just sitting in a safe in his office... oh wait.

- Claire's boyfriend could paint the future... oh wait.

Oh, and I noticed in the last thread, Elias is now sporting is rockin' new beard. Joining him up with Ralph and Palmer in the cool guy beard club. Hey, if any of you guys are ever interested in converting those awesome beards into even more awesome goatee's, may I suggest the GoateeSaver.

Andrew...those Sham-wow shammies are amazing. They really work :P

Jordan...seriously, stop posting those stupid videos from the 80s. Once I click on the link I have to watch to the end. They are sooooooo awful; however, I feel better for watching. But now I have that damn song stuck in my head!

Heroes...I actually liked this episode. It wasn't terrible--that's saying a lot. I like what's happening with Peter and Nathan Patrelli. I absolutely can not stand Claire. It's to the point where I'm not even listening to her story--but thinking, "ugh, get rid of her already...and why do they keep insisting she wear that hideous wig!"

Palmer...pillow fights, LOL. I never even knew the "Toronto Womens Pillow Fight Club" existed. Good thing considering someone died! However I do enjoy some of the ladies stage names. If I had to join and pick my own name, I'd be Sweet Dreamz...or Plush Knight-Sleap

englishteers, wtf is up with Nosy Bonk?!?!?!? holy shit!

Chris JC said...

We needed those mid '80s to get to where we are today.

As for Noseybonk, before children's television all became the same safe, dull hogwash the world over, people working in kids' TV liked to occasionally remind everyone that we're part of Europe and therefore fucking nuts. As the clip says he was a character from a show called Jigsaw, although in recent years a fella named Stuart Ashen has been in ownership of either an amazing replica or the original mask and has been making terrifying YouTube videos with it.

I grew up with stuff like that so it doesn't even bother me in the slightest. It's the same reason that I'm not freaked out by the

Cadbury Eyebrow Dance Commercial

I've got to find these new youtube videos tonight. After I watch the latest Flight of the Conchords on the magic box.

I whole heartedly agree with Seattle Jimmy's commentary on the music show. They are totally dumbing down the show. I have enjoyed it, but it's been a bit more "simple."

t-dot kim said...

I think the writers have been asked to "dumb it down" for the casual viewers. *sigh*

PalmerEldritch said...

i think they're probably intentionally dumbing down some of the stuff a bit since the time travel was such a big leap to ask the audience to make.

it probably cant help that we've spent 4 years training ourselves to look for conspiracies and creating Mirror Matter Moon Theories (wtf?!). now that the show is wrapping things up and giving answers, its bound to be a tad disappointing.

also... thanks for the french, kim (twhs?). for all i know you were talking about Tim Horton's and the Edmonton Eskimos, but it still sounded nice!

Just been reading about TNT's "Leverage".

That'll show the BBC - they made a big glossy series with attractive people and an Americon icon (Robert Vaughn) more with a view to American audiences than British ones and in the end US TV just nicks the whole concept and does it themselves.

Brilliant.

Jordan said...

ATTENTION PALMER!

memphish said...

I've been watching Leverage. Can we give Jane from Coupling back in exchange for the lead of your choice Chris? It's an ok show. It depends on which of the "team" is the focus. I liked last night's because it focused on Parker and Hardison, not Sophie. Also the guy who plays Eliot needs a haircut in the worst way.

As for LOST, I think the big problem with the reveals falling short isn't really dumbing it down so much as us figuring out pretty easily the logical next steps. There's just not that much mystery left, and the "co-incidental" connections are getting tiring, but they also work to tell the story. If they made things even more unpredictable we'd probably call shenanigans on that too.

Is Gina Bellman not very good? Perhaps they should pull a complete Jekyll swap and replace her with Michelle "Bionica Jones" Ryan and her Shoulders of Power.

memphish said...

She's an actress playing a bad actress which is painful, but the worst part is they keep making her a Mata Hari and watching her seducing the various marks while wearing ridiculous get-ups (this week she was supposed to be from Mumbai) can be even more painful than her bad acting acting.

Also, I just can't stop seeing Jane.

I just decided I wasn't crazy about The Little Prince since I deleted it from the DVR without watching a second time.

Jordan, I'm sorry we didn't have time to chit-chat much last night. We need to get together again soon.

PalmerEldritch said...

jordan, i'd try some of that. it's probably not a good sign that you're the second person to send me a link to that in the past couple of weeks. maybe i ought to cut back on the bacon? then again, maybe not.

that's what Leverage is? after all that hype it's just Hustle with Americans? blargh. is it as stylized as Hustle?

by the way, that's also remarkably similar to Burn Notice except that he's an ex-spy.

memphish said...

Leverage is no where near as fun as Burn Notice. And talk about dumbed down. Last night they replayed 2 scenes in slow motion just in case we didn't understand how they happened the first time. It also lacks an overarching plot like the burn notice. It's very procedural, so some of the episodes are really awful (horse farm) while others are ok. I wouldn't really recommend it. I'm pretty much just watching it because there is nothing else on on Tuesday nights, but all that will change next week when The Real Housewives of NYC come back on. Talk about your guilty pleasures.

I've also been trying out that new TNT show Trust Me about the ad agency with the guy from Ed and the guy from Will and Grace. It is no Mad Men. In fact it's not even a Leverage.

- Crank 2 is gonna be awesome. i want to go to there.

- Speaking of high art franchises, i watched Final Destinaton 3 last night. Not as good as the first two, which i'm overly enthusiastic about.

- Dean needs to get a little more of his badass back. A little more A New Hope Han Solo, a little less Return Of The Jedi.

- LOST! I'm hoping the Oceanic 6+ just cool their heels at Slip 23 this episode and we get a lot of Jin, Rousseau, and time-fuckery.

- Do you think we'll visit young Widmore again this season? Will the time-fuckers return to times they've already blipped out of? or will we catch up with Ellie, Widmore & Alpert at a slightly later date like 1959 or something? Somehow they have to reveal who was in the other canoe. "oh hey. I don't know if you remember or not but, last week, we were shooting at you and then the blond one over there clipped my buddy. Not cool dudes."

I agree, Andrew. It's like Sam and Dean have changed bodies.
I'm ready to see more Castiel and maybe some Lillith.

I don't know if I mentioned this anywhere but Morgan just watched all three Final Destination movies. After wards, I realized I was thinking of Urban Legend. Final Destination movies are gory, Urban Legend not so much. Oops, mom.

Speaking of, here's another instance of how awesome my kid is.
Last night, she suggested watching a show that she loves. ACE OF CAKES. She has such good taste.

Crank 2- good grief.

memphish said...

My kid's content with Tom and Jerry. He does like competition shows if I'll let him watch them. But most of the Bravo ones like Top Chef and Project Runway have too much cussing and general bad behavior that I don't let him watch them. He really wants American Gladiators to come back. Anyone know if there'll be a S3?

Holli

andrew. said...

- Holli, there's some sort of American Gladiators thing in production for 2010. It could just as likely be a new Will Farell movie.

- i can't wait to see the dumbhanced version of "Little Prince". The scene where Juliet asks Sawyer to open up about his feelings will be precious. "Sawyer just saw Kate in the last scene...Juliet is asking Sawyer about his feelings...Juliet used to be an Other but now she has the hots for Jack..."

As for that bacon monstrosity. I think I know what my last meal will be if I'm ever executed. And Palmer, seeing as how I wasn't the first person to send you that article. I'm thinking the blogspot needs to get you the "Praise the Lard" shirt in that photo for your next birthday.

I've finally started watching The Wire. I just power watched the first disc. Disc 2 should be in the mail today. So far so good, but mostly it's like sticking a finger in my eye with Lance Reddick for how good he can be and how badly Fringe is wasting him.

Amen Holli. Amen.

Not that I watch Fringe. But I've seen how awesome Reddick can be. And it seems that shows like Fringe and Lost have no idea of this. He was also good in a very brief stint on HBO's Oz.

memphish said...

I like Reddick on LOST though. I think mostly silent and menacing is awesome. I hope we get some more soon.

On Fringe he's a bureaucratic weenie currently being man-handled by some other guy who is the absolute worst part of the show. I keep thinking Broyles (Reddick's character) will get interesting by being evil or something, but so far, no go. He's barely even in the episodes these days. The Lieutenant on every Law and Order episode ever gets more play.

That reminds me. I need to run down to the corner store sometime today to get my customary 40 oz. PBR. Has become a bit of a Lost ritual the past couple weeks. I find it helps combat the nose bleeds.

Holli, if you are only 3 eps into The Wire and liking it, that's a good sign. A lot of people, it takes about 5 or 6 eps to really get into it. I am jealous of you that you have new eps to experience. Andrew, did you ever finish your re-watch? I'm eagerily anticipating it myself.

Back to bacon real quick. I've been in the process of looking for a new full time gig. And the other day I came across an add on Craigs List for the company that makes the bacon salt and baconaise. They are located in Seattle. I sent in an application, but have yet to hear anything. Likely doubtful, as I think the posting was a little old. But it was hilarious. In the job description, it read, "MUST LOVE BACON!". Hahaha.

/can't get the imagined taste of the baconstrosity out of head

memphish said...

Jordan, as I watched the episodes I read Alan Sepinwall's blog posts for newbies. That helped a lot because it works very hard not to give anything away yet is awesome for sorting out characters and pointing out things I should pay attention to.

That sounds helpful. Cuz yeah, there is a very steep learning curve early on. Sepinwall also did some pretty in depth deconstruction of ep's if I recall correctly. Not sure when he actually started doing them. But you can find them on his blog, as you probably already have. Tim Goodman of the SF Chronicle also did some as well for the later seasons.

- actually i just finished my rewatch of The Wire on Monday. I took a break after season 4 because it is pretty devastating, and, thinking about it, going from my most favorite season straight into my least favorite seemed like a bad idea.
Season 5 is great, but the act of consciously trying to tie it all in a neat little bow can cause some missteps (spoilers: Lost season 6)
I don't suggest listening to the commentaries unless you agree with the premise that The Wire is head and shoulders beyond most television, as the actors, writers and producers of the series like to make that point constantly.

- Seeing Chris Partlow & Frank Sobatka on Fringe a couple of weeks ago was a beautiful thing (no, despite my best efforts i can't seem to quit Fringe)

- I just got season 1 of Big Love, so that's the next series to plow through for me.
