why is Michael working for Ben? is he working for Ben? is he being blackmailed? or did Ben communicate to Michael the necessity to protect the Island (and his friends?) from Widmore?

no spoilers, please. only speculation!

Chris JC said...

No! Not the mind probe!

Damn - I knew I shouldn't have watched both versions of The Five Doctors yesterday.

memphish said...

I'd guess Walt was integral to convincing Michael to work for Ben and against forces assaulting the Island, but why Walt would seem to change his mind from making birds fly into walls and his warning to Michael in 3 Minutes I don't know. Maybe Room 23 finally worked on him.

Holli

memphish said...

Or maybe it was just that Ben was able to provide those snazzy fake IDs and lifts so that Walt can buy beer at age 12.

Holli

PalmerEldritch said...

ah, the famous "Walt Getting His Beer On" theory. ;)

why did Walt talk backward to Shannon? cuz Shannon wasn't as "special" as Locke? or cuz Walt was just learning to bi-locate or project?

memphish said...

Nerves. Or the aforementioned beer.

I love how Palmer starts asking questions, that he really doesn't want the answers to... yet.

/kablamo!

PalmerEldritch said...

i'm trying to prompt some old skool LOST theorizin'!

did Michael make it to the main land before being recruited by Ben? was Michael recruited before leaving the Island? did he know about Widmore before he shot Ana Lucia? so many questions that i dont want answered by spoilers!

andrew. said...

my theory: Michael is working for Ben. Michael & Walt made it back to civilization, but not America, maybe Fiji or someplace like that. They were eeking out an existence under the radar, paranoid about the Others getting them or paying the consequences for the 2 murders. Walt's abilities were manifesting themselves more and more, and came to the attention of Widmore, who proceeded to kidnap him. Michael was once again out of his mind trying to find "My Boy!!!" when Ben reached out to him, and told him that Ben was his only hope of getting Walt back. So with Ben's help Michael infiltrates the freighter under a false identity. Meanwhile, Widmore has used Walt's abilities to find the rough location of the island. Walt uses his abilities to bilocate to the island and contact John Locke for help.
LOST!

[ally] said...

THE FOLLOWING IS ALL THEORY: NO LOGIC BEHIND IT.

What makes you think he's Ben's man? He might not be. For all we know, we're just being led to believe it's him. Knowing Ben's track record it also wouldn't surprise me if his man on the boat was more than one man.

[ally] said...

Andrew, your theory has given me chills. It's very plausible. I guess only time will tell.

mb said...

wanna know my "theory"?

kidding

mb said...

Was looking through the blogspot archives and found a little something from Aimee in Little Rock from August 2006 (during the MYOKOMw/SAS podcast drought of '06)

lmao

PalmerEldritch said...

interesting theory, andrew. hmmm...

maybe, Michael gets to civilization somewhere. gets himself a job and a place to stay with Walt in some "out of the way" place like Thailand with Bai Ling (kidding!!!!), and then one of Ben's offIsland men contact him and say "everyone on the Island is gunna die" unless he helps stop Widmore?

i think Michael is a good person despite killing those people. heck, it was in exchange for his son's freedom and all. rock and hard place. know what i mean? but i think he'd do his best to save the rest of the people on the island so i have a hard time believing that he'd just up and leave them to live on an island with crazy fucks like Ben Linus on it. so, i'd imagine that Ben must have gotten to him before he had a chance to get everyone help.

heck, maybe Michael told Widmore where the Island is. and then Ben's offIsland agents told him about what a screw up he'd just made. and that's when he went undercover on the freighter? to set right what once went wrong?

[ally] said...

the fact that you said "theory" only implies that it's more of a fact than theory. and we don't want your truths over here, we just wanna speculate ridiculousness.

:)

"I felt like such a plonker"

I don't believe "plonker" was on that list of British words I learned. But it sounds awful.

I love how he says:
"It would be amazing if someone found it"

what would be even more amazing would be someone returning it.

mb said...

Lol Ally - yes you got my meaning. worry not, I am very careful even with speculation here since my thoughts can be construed differently than spoiler-free folks.

I did have a question for the blog though (and I promise I have NO info re: this). I was just thinking back to Seas. 2, about Goodwin killing that guy Nathan that Ana Lucia had thrown into a pit after Ana Lucia threatened to torture him because, according to Goodwin, he wasn't a "good" person. He also said he killed him because Ana Lucia was threatening to torture Nathan which, Goodwin said he feared would turn Ana Lucia's suspicions toward HIM after Nathan's torture proved unproductive.
This all seems fishy to me as to why Goodwin would kill Nathan. It seems over paranoid to me that Goodwin would assume Ana Lucia would turn her suspicions on him. Ana had had a good relationship with Goodwin up to that point (after Nathan was killed) if I'm remembering correctly. I'm almost wondering if Nathan wasn't some other kind of mole (perhaps even from Widmore?) and Goodwin realized he needed to get rid of him.

Reading Nathan's wikipedia entry, there are a couple causes for some suspicion - he wasn't seen by any of the other tailies until nightfall of the first night ("The Other 48 Days"), and he took lengthy trips into the jungle for "bathroom breaks" which Ana Lucia was suspicious of.

Don't know - just got me thinking after Goodwin resurfaced in "The Other Woman" and now with Widmore trying to find the island and all. What do people think?

PalmerEldritch said...

"What do people think?"

I think the writers completely forgot about that guy. Oops.

memphish said...

I think Nathan was just a red herring to make us start thinking about a mole. Nathan like Paolo was just up to his own shit and paid for it in the end. There's a lot of things that we'll look back on when it's all said and done that they could have made more of, but didn't. For example, I think the whole pregnancy issue on Island is about to go the way of Nathan. We'll never learn why the Island kills pregnant chicks and no one will ever solve the problem.

the island prevents babies from being born because Jacob went to way too many baby showers one month and now hates babies.

also, Jacob thinks that Jack's just "not that into" Juliet and that Juliet is a bitch.

:p

Man, you thought Ben was pissed before....

No Jacob's gay on Hurley. I'd also be willing to bet that Christian Shephard real or ghost will be willing to take up any Juliet slack left by his tearful son.

Just listened. Excellent as usual - and couldn't agree more. I am continually in love with Giacchino's use of the "less is more" theory. So few TV shows that have soundtracks anywhere close to Lost's quality.

Part of this reverent demeanor comes from the fact that I FINALLY ponied up and bought the Seas. 2 soundtrack :) awesome!

hehehehe.

he really was, wasn't he?

"the island prevents babies from being born because Jacob went to way too many baby showers one month and now hates babies."

JUST KIDDING KIMBERLEY! :P

PalmerEldritch said...

"So Kimb is Jacob?"

i'm enjoying the heck out of Jimmy's piece this week (twss). good stuff.

mb, think i can check out your spoiler segments after thursday night? or are you already getting spoilers for the second half of this season?!

mb said...

lol Jordan - I knew someone was going to go for that one

[ally] said...

"So Kimb is Jacob?"

i thought it too, but i wasn't gonna say anything.

I'll probably end up doing what I always do. I'll resist the urge to listen to MB's spoilers until Thursday and will give in out of my excitement.
So, this is the last episode for three weeks?

any more Kevin Johnson theories? besides yours, MB.

SPAM ALERT:

I like to think that Stephanie and myself have been a bit nonchalant in not pimping TOO heavily the podcast we do with our friends Emily and John - "Cue the Film" (not affiliated with Ralph's excellent "Cue the Music" cast) but we've just recorded a special edition featuring just the two of us that we're both particularly happy with. It eschews the usual chaotic review bundle of a regular episode - and the off topic shenanigans that usually ensues - and concentrates almost totally on the relationship between the two films Control and Twenty-Four Hour Party People based on the 1970s Manchester music scene.

it's just under 37 mins so if you have that amount of time spare, please do give us a listen HERE or on iTunes (search for "Cue the Film").

SPAM OVER.

p.s. I love you all.

Chris JC said...

KABLAMO!!!!

PalmerEldritch said...

hey, chris, if you're pimping Cue The Film then consider me the former governor of a major northeastern american state cuz i've been all over it for weeks now!

enjoyed the Blaxsploitation themed podcast a few weeks back. Curtis Mayfield has been on my iPod for a while now and it was fun to find out that "Superfly" was indeed from the soundtrack to "Superfly."

anyhow, definitely enjoy you and Steph on the podcast. two differing accents but two intelligent and humorous people!

[ally] said...

chris you're too cute. of course i'll listen.

i finally enlisted myself for trevor's much advertised "bracket". i have no idea what it is or what i did, but it's there now. i just clicked randomly until i finished.

new lost tomorrow!!! yay!!!

mb said...

Palmer -
Thanks for wanting to listen! you can always listen to the begining of the spoiler segs without anything spoilery (I'm pretty sure) except maybe the episode title and whose episode it is that week - I sometimes mention that info at the beginning.
But then I go through the upcoming episodes CHRONOLOGICALLY, so you can just stop when you get to the point you don't want to hear any more.

I'm pretty sure I don't even mention any spoilers re: the final 5 episodes (after the break) until the latter part of "The Other Woman Beckons" episode.

Steph - you continue to flatter me - so how much $$ you want this time? (this really is extortion ;))

Chris and Steph - cannot wait to hear the special CTF episode!

Stephanie said...

Intelligent and humorous? You can't be talking about me, p. But thanks for listening, guys. It's good to know someone is.

Chris JC said...

Thanks guys - you're all lovely. This one is a little different to the usual episodes, but we're both very proud of it.

And those who are... entertained by Stephanie's voice will surely get great joy from her saying the phrase "lots of graphic sex".

Stephanie said...

Excellent job, Chris!!!

Chris JC said...

Excellent job, you.

And Excellent Job, MB! (sorry to have crashed your thread).

Chris JC said...

Assuming Michael is Ben's man and it's not just a massive coincidence, I predict the next episode will explain exactly why the Freighties have made sure the boat's janitor has been kept up to speed about all the details of their super secret plans.

memphish said...

Tonight's episode has the potential to be one of those that plays entirely differently when we watch it tonight vs. if you're watching the entire series on DVD at some point in the future. We've been wondering about Michael for 22 months. If you're lucky/smart? enough to wait for 6 years of DVDs you'll only have to wait how many hours these episodes are apart. I hope the amount of time we've been given to speculate won't ruin the episode for us.

Trevor McFur said...

I'm not sure what to expect tonight, but I hope that Michael at least got back to the real world (I'd be disappointed if he would up on the freighter because he happened to just sail right into it).

I think that we finally have enough people in the March Madness pool that I can stop spamming up the board trying to recruit. Anyone who's still thinking of joining has until about noon EST, which is when the games start.

I dl'ed Cue the Film last night, looking foward to checking it out...

Here's a crackpot theory......

So we know that Walt is older than he should be, and we know that there's all sorts of crazy time-travelly stuff going on. What if, that wasn't Michael masquerading as Kevin Johnson? What if that's actually Walt??????

Chris JC said...

Now THAT's a crackpot theory - good work.

The film podcast might create a bunch of new Joy Division fans at this rate.

memphish said...

I love that idea Trevor, but then where did Taller Ghost Walt come from? Passing back and forth through the barrier taking on shaving and non-shaving forms?

I'd like to see Walt and Michael make it to some point in time that's not Nov. 2004. Michael sends Walt (aka insert new first name here Johnson) to boarding school and then gets a job as a journeyman on the freighter which I'm sure covers the cost of said boarding school. It still doesn't explain why he'd work for Ben, but if that little bug-eyed bastard wants that, then I'm sure he'll have that.

It just dawned on me that Michael getting on the freighter is a lot like the Sam guy in the Find815 ARG getting on the Christiane 1.

Hoops tips off at 10 past noon Eastern which means in the am here in Western Tenn.! I love this tourney!

Trevor McFur said...

Taller Ghost Walt could still be Smokey.

The problem with my 'Walt is Kevin Johnson' theory is that it directly contradicts my 'Walt is dead' theory.

- just entered the MYOKMwSAS March Madness tourney (as D.H.A.R.M.A Community College). i went fantasy fantasy with Pittsburgh taking the whole thing because then i'm more invested.

- Here in Pittsburgh it's not just Thurlostday but we're also celebrating Mr. Rogers' birthday.

PITTSBURGH - A tribute to children's public television pioneer Fred Rogers will include an effort to get people everywhere to wear a sweater on what would have been his 80th birthday.

March 20th is being promoted as "Sweater Day" to honor Rogers, who died of cancer five years ago. A sweater was his trademark garb on "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood."

David Newell, who played speedy deliveryman Mr. McFeely on the show, appears in a YouTube video that touts the event.

"Sweater Day" is the capstone to a six-day celebration planned by Family Communications Inc. of Pittsburgh. Rogers created the company to produce his show.

- Battlestar Galactica season 4 is getting close! i hated season 3.5 but i'm still excited.

Trevor McFur said...

Mr. McFeely is still alive??? He's gotta be pushing 90.

I think that Pitt actaully has a shot ... I have them in my Final Four. They looked very good in the Big East tourny.

I'm behind on my new found blog hobbie. I have not read any of the recent stuff I'd like to comment on the last post,.. topic of bob what ever. I'm personaly am me on this shit bitch, any dumb thing I type i think, sometimes regretfully, most of the time not. I don't pretend anything nor would I try to find a place to go pretend..What the hell fun is that? I will never know.
The fun for me is to be my self and see if any one else may be like me a drunk rambler of nonsens and bad spelling,(hard to find computer people are smart for the most part) or might find my thoughts slightly entertaining. Or maybe even funny. A good thought is rare these days I think it was andrew who said "the FF leave you kind of thoughtless." Paraphrased? (a big word for me).

Ralph I'm half way through your movie segment and my netflix is GROWIN. I was glad you remembered Toy Soldiers one of my fav. movies when i was younger.
I may Have put it in my top 5 for nastalgia alone! along with Red Dawn, and Lost Boys. Movies that make male teenagers happy? The Phone hook up to the sex line thingy was priceless! Can't wait to here the rest tonight.

Stephanie said...

Was this the plan for Michael all along, as the producers assert? Or did HP quit the show and agree to come back for more money?

memphish said...

I think you've asked a chicken and egg question Steph. This week's TV Guide has something about that. It says Darlton wanted HP to appear in the S3 Finale, but he was shooting a pilot and wouldn't. Good thing that pilot didn't get picked up I guess. I think that's part of why they offed Libby too wasn't it?

Holli

PalmerEldritch said...

the plan for michael was, apparently, for him to leave and then come back later.

but he kept on doing movies and whatnot instead. but then they finally got him for season 4.

they talked a bit about it at comic con. diplomatically though since HP was there on stage with them. so if there were ever problems like "we wanted harold back... but we didnt want to pay a lot" they didnt mention it.

mb said...

Just posted a pretty cool new spoiler over at The SPLOG for those forward-looking amongst us

Steph,

I think Harold also said that, at the time, he was reluctant to uproot his family again. Although now, apparently his family is staying in LA while he works, and his wife is pregnant with their 2nd kid, and he plans to keep flying back and forth continually (whenever he's not shooting) so he can be in LA as much as possible and hopefully not miss the birth. Man - crazy.

Harold could put one a' them Golden Passes to good use - lol.
