I have spent a lot of time yesterday discussing The End with stevi. Everytime i do, i get glassy eyed.

I am going to save my thoughts for the podcast.

But i have to say that i really really liked this episode.

Every time I look at the thread pic, it cracks me up. When it happened in the episode, I laughed out loud as it went into commercial. LOVED it.

Jordan said...

Haha, Holli. That video raises a lot of interesting points. It's really for the best to not try to make too much sense of things.

Jordan
"You mean letting go of trying to make sense of things narratively, right?"
Basically yes - but mainly just understanding what HAPPENED. I posted that before I had enough time to process everything and it wasn't all making basic sense to me - the idea that everything that happened (on the island) actually did HAPPEN, and MATTERED. It does now, and I think a lot of the screamers and angry fans (not here) might not be letting the narrative of this episode sink in. Yeah it all ends metaphysically and the final battle w/Locke might not have been what some were envisioning, but we GOT a really heartfelt and sensible end to the characters stories IMO. Sensible in the sense that - I don't think anything matters more in this story than showing that all the connections and friendships these people made though the crash of 815 MATTERED. I felt - by leaping forward (sort of - in an out-of-timey way) and showing us that in "The End" (the real, ultimate end), these people mattered to each other and helped each other get past all their crap that they brought with them to the island. Ralph tweeted yesterday something like "I'm so glad they didn't answer all the questions", and that's exactly what I have been saying to people asking me how I liked the finale. They showed us what mattered in my opinion.

Lapidus surviving the sub - I accept it (its possible and less wacky than other stuff that's happened) but I did laugh at it. And if he had made it out of the sub and been hanging with the Candidates he'd have been quite an awkward hanger-on. Although they could have given him a one-liner during the Jacob fireside chat like

Joe SC - THANKS for going back and listening - it's funny to hear the stuff in retrospect.

And thanks Jordan for the shoutout - it's not a thankless job, you just have to be good at keeping your mouth shut (as so many ARE NOT in the spoiler world, to my continued amazement)

Also, I definitely heard Walt was going to be in the finale - I'll have to go back and check my info - maybe it was a foiler - that'd be cool :) . I'll post whatever I had at the SPLOG in case some don't want to know for sure until the DVDs come out.

Kid - RE: Des not becoming smokey -
My understanding was that Des didn't turn into smoke b/c he had been radiated with the energy from the swan and that made him able to withstand the effects of the light. Jack didn't turn into smoke b/c the but-plug was pulled out when he went down into the cave. As for why he didn't turn into smoke when the light came back? Not sure - but he was ejected into the jungle like Desmond was from the swan (Foxy kept his clothes tho - sorry Kim, my wife, and all Foxy fans).

The only other thing I can think of that was different than when MiB fell in, was that the light was dimmer than in "Across the Sea". Perhaps b/c someone (maybe MiB's people?) had built the butt-plug and surrounding water-channeling carved rock & the pool and that dimmed it? Or maybe that has all been there forever. Dunno.

Vegas was fun - ate some incredible food and saw a Cirque du Soleil show and spent 6 hrs in our room on Sun. nite with room service and a box of tissues. And then there was the walking - not a complaint - just forgot how LONG the strip is. Lots of fun people watching tho - lots of characters. Managed to NOT lose money! Played some slots and walked away netting about $50 - can't complain. I should say - my WIFE gambled and won - MY luck was pathetic.

As far as what to do now? I AM going to miss this show like a MoFo - but honestly - there are so many other shows I simply have not had time to watch, I'm looking forward to having a little more time to do so. And, as far as the blogspot, I don't plan on going anywhere, so you all are still stuck with me :)

mb said...

Also -
I want to say thanks to all you nerds. This blog has made watching this show something special and something that MATTERED :)

That's great Ralph. I'm all for dragging this thing out. I've got one post-finale podcast on the iPod right now and I just don't think I'm ready for it. I did listen to Ryan and Jen's initial reaction, but I wasn't ready for any of the Holy Fraking Craps that often make their listener feedback hard to take, so I deleted the rest of it.

So - I wasn't aware of how big a deal some were apparently making of the images of the 815 wreckage during the finale credits.

ABC sets the record straight - "Those photographs were not part of the "Lost" story at all"

seemed obvious to me - but I think 6 years of mind-fuckery has driven some to see things that aren't there.

Chris JC said...

Seen it.

Liked it.

Still not as weird as the last episode of Quantum Leap which, for my money, manages to out-weird both The Prisoner and Twin Peaks, which is no mean feat.

I didn't see 815 wreckage due to the way I watched the episode. Intrigue.

One of my friends who watched it with did foresee a kind of ongoing Jacob/Richard/MiB scenario but with those guys replaced by Hurley/Ben/Jack

and you know what - fuck it - there's totally space for that to have happened if we want it to.

I like LOST.

mb said...

I'll have t check out Quantum Leap's finale one of these days

Brad said...

you want to cry? Watch the final episode of Fraggle Rock. No Joke. I dare anyone to survive that and not become an emotional wreck weeping uncontrollably.

JoeSC said...

Wow, busy day on the Blogspot!

Nice to hear you enjoyed the finale Ralph. Having all of these podcasts in a row, including the triumphant return of SaS, is like Christmas all over again!

So... if everyone on the blogspot has a Lostgasm at the same time, would that be considered a blogspot orgy? A Blorgy? Weird...

So, I've spent the last 2 days having to explain to friends why they should have cared about what happened in the finale. Even the wife hated it, so as much as I loved it, other peoples reactions kinda brought me down.

Holli - I listened to Ryan and Jen's initial reaction podcast and typically I just skip the listener feedback section. For some reason I decided to listen to it this time, and it actually made me really sad. The calls were genuine and pretty emotional, and I felt terrible for that last guy who could barely talk through all the tears.

I think that was the first moment it really started to sink in that it was over. It felt good, though.

On a completely unrelated note - Breaking Bad was fucking amazing Jordan! I wish more shows could learn how to blow my mind on such a shoestring budget.

Back to a related note... I like LOST.

mb said...

Joe - Sorry you've had to weather more of the finale-dislike - I've been trying to read more reviews online to get some perspective, but it's amazing to me how many people still aren't getting that they didn't all die on the island.

There was one idiot (sorry - he/she was IMO) who was like "This is why I didn't watch after the pilot - I called it - they're in purgatory". And the post actually lasted for a long paragraph describing why the simplest explanation always works and people get themselves tied into knots trying to analyze nothing. Astounding.

What a moron.

sorry for the rant.

On a better note - and the other reason I'm posting is to alert anyone who's interested that Titus Welliver was on Kevin Pollock's Chat Show (which he podcasts) - www.kevinpollakschatshow.com. It's on iTunes if anyone wants.

so, did Desmond's heliclaire prediction not come true because of the LOSTies time-fuckery? or... something?

PalmerEldritch said...

is anyone else like me and just sort of zen about the end of LOST?

i ask the heliclaire question but, honestly, i don't really care. it was a compelling and satisfying narrative that didnt answer all our questions and left some inconsistency/mystery for us to fill in or wonder about. the real-life finale of LOST was a lot like the ending of the Flashterlife, we saw important flashbacks and reminders of the journey, said good-bye, and then let it go.

also, they put Juliet and Kate in awesome dresses. so, that was cool.

JonFromNKY said...

I still can't bring myself to watch it again... focusing on the good times.

Jordan said...

I'm totally with you, Palmer. Zen is the perfect word to the approach I've taken to the show. It's not going to all make sense. To expect it to is absurd. It's obvious the method of construct that went about to crafting the narrative. And anyone who expects more from it, IMO, is just asking for a massive head ache. There are a million things that if I wanted to, I could point to and rant and rave about. And if you've ventured around this internet thing the last few days, you know that people are doing just that. But for me, that was all out the door a good while ago. Once all the mystic elements were introduced, for me that was sign numero uno that things weren't going to end sueper satisfying on a factual/explanatory level. But I've never cared much for that. It's always been characters first and foremost. So I've been of the mindset of that was all I wanted. So I've pretty much been tuning out all the silly nonsense (except for Across the Sea, which was total bull shit) and just enjoying the ride. It's funny, I've talking with a bunch of friends and rando's the past few days about the finale. And I find myself totally defending it to everyone I talk to. It's funny cuz in my own head, I consider myself to be quite critical of some of the sillier aspects of the show the past couple seasons. Yet compared to the average non-fanatical viewer, I'm the one saying, "Yeah, it's kinda ridiculous. But if you just go with it and focus on the character stuff, it wasn't half-bad." Kinda rambling right now. But my main point is, who gives a shit about all the billion and one things that don't make sense or never ammounted to anything (seriously! wtf was so special about Aaron!!!). I teared up for just about every single sappy character reunion/flashback the finale gave us. That in itself made for a satisfying send off for me. And sorry guys. Past consumed beers are not allowing for paragraphs at this time. My bad.

JoeSC said...

Nicely said Jordan! I've stopped defending the finale to people who understood it, but just didn't like it. When I hear someone bring up the "they were dead the entire time" comment I can't help but jump in, though.

Ryan - that alt-ending was terrific! I think I nearly messed myself.

Finally watched the "Good Guys" premier. Nothing spectacular, but it was decent enough to keep me around for another couple of episodes.

I thought that the ending was quite beautiful, tapping into our deepest desires that there might be an afterlife, where our lives can be resolved. If only it could be true.

Stephanie said...

Oh good grief.

señorsifert said...

Although we will always be divided on those that thought the ending was cramazeballs, and those that thought it was godamnful, my question is:

on a scale of 1-10, how do you rate the entire series and why?

IMHO, I would give it a 8. Like Kim, I had a hard time getting used to the time travel crap, and once the series starting explaining too much of the mystical/magical elements it lost some of it's "mystique" for me. If Lost would have ended after season 2, or even halfway through season 3, I would have given it a perfect "10".

I still love Lost, but it wasn't the "perfect" show that it started out to be (in my view)

So waddy'all think?

Cramazeballs, stupicraptastic, or somewhere in between?

Jordan said...

I'm pretty much right with you, Clementine. The first few seasons were pure awesomeness. Some of the middle stuff was better than others. And I really wish the series hadn't taken the magical route that it did in the end. But all in all, it was still pretty great.

t-dot kim said...

Agreed Guys,

I LOVED everything up to the unfortunate time traveling "incident"...and completely lost faith of the show recovering anything of what it used to be plot-wise with the magical moon pool in Season 6.

I absolutely LOVE the characters on this show. Jack Shepherd is the man, and I want Hurley to be my bff. I've grown so attached to the characters on this show, and am grateful for watching it.

It's just a shame, that whatever DIDN'T happen, happened (ie, Walt, Eko, Libby, The Others, Whispers, etc). If they could have meshed the PLOT-loving elements with the CHARACTER-loving elements this show would have been a 10.

John V. Holder III said...

I was listening to the B.S. Report, and one of Bill's guests made a great point. If you are someone who has become less interested in the show over the past few seasons, there is NO WAY you were gonna like the finale. I mean, what were you expecting?

I've watched the finale 3 times and the final 10 minutes about 10 times, and I still love every second. I consider myself lucky :)

For me, this is the best TV show of all time (but I haven't seen the Wire yet so don't hold me to that). And the few things that bugged me here and there, I can forgive...because it's a TV show. Maybe nothing is ever as good as when it's new...but you have to KNOW that. And if you do, you can just accept the show for what it is and you will love it, I promise you.

Stephanie said...

I say TLI should just start over with the pilot. There's no reason Kim and Aimee has to stop recording.

let's rationalize some answers to "unanswered" questions.

food drop.

i read someone positing that Mrs Hawking was sending the food to feed Desmond since she knew he was important.

however, i imagine that the Dharma Initiative that was still on the mainland was sending food to whoever they had pushing the button to "save the world" every 108 minutes. i remember Kelvin saying something like he "answered an ad" in the paper in the 90s to get the job pressing the button with Radzynski, so i imagine that Dharma was still kind of operating. so, why not send food to feed the dudes "saving the world?"

Stephanie said...

When we first got our ps3, I ran out and bought Uncharted. It's a shooting game. I hated it. Not to mention I was terrible at it. I accept the fact that I am not a gamer. I lack the coordination I suppose. I'm much better at streaming netflix through the ps3.

I was just re-watching LA/X and noticed just a few bars of "Hurley's Handouts" played (with only a few notes representing the melody) when Jack notices the cut on his neck in the airplane bathroom. I almost wonder if they thought about using "Life and Death" but realized that even three notes or chords of that and people would probably catch on to what the Flash sideways was right then.

Regarding the Lost box set. Patience is a virtue. The complete series box set of The Wire was originally $250 and I recently bought it for $45. Which is cheaper than I bought single seasons for. That said, Lost does have a much larger fan base and higher demand for the dvd sets. The Wire on it's best day is an extremely small niche show. So maybe the Lost set won't drop in price as fast.
