Series Four was the best series of Lost, but it had the worst finale. Discuss.

Chris JC said...

I don't agree. For the first two seasons, I always found the finales a bit underwhelming. Season one was a superb episode cliffhanger but, apart from the tease of the hatch ladder, not really season finale material.

Season two, I enjoyed the chaos in the hatch but once it blew I thought it was a little anti-climactic. Especially when The Others, after the purple sky, just went back to business as usual.

Last season is the classic WTF and as such was very very good. But the reason it's so highly regarded is the introduction of a massive new element to the show, and posing massive questions.

This year, by contrast, was about explaining the WTF moment and, as such, only posed a few minor questions. LOST fans demand things be explained and then when they are, they no like it. Season 4 is second best finale.

While I'm here - Jay & Jack show... it's odd to hear people bemoaning a perceived lack of quality lately because I've actually enjoyed them much more recently. When I first got into the LOST podcast universe I would download them as a matter of course and sometimes forget to listen to them (and ended up deleting a load just to get enough space to sync my nano (you heard me). When I did listen it was never with any urgency, and frequently just in the background. However in the last few weeks I've found myself well up for it.

Unusual.

Great show Ben and Ralph!

I must say that after re-watching the finale, I am convinced the island has been moved forward in time and probably not in space.

The orientation video clearly stated that the bunny would be moved in time.

My question is how does the moving of the island in time not have it appear in space where the Earth used to be in its orbit around the sun? Is time travel relative or absolute?

If I am moved forward in time by 183 days, will the Earth be at the opposite end of its orbit than where I am? What about the fact that our entire galaxy is moving and the universe is expanding????

Do I have to be moved forward in time in 1 year increments to make sure that I end up on Earth and not in space?

I need my morning coffee....

I think that it was Ben who threw out that it was either Widmore or maybe Christian that had been Ben's predecessor - I was thinking that it was Christian and his body was called back to the island after his death because, like Ben, it's where he truly belonged and now he's "finishing" the work he started. However, I am REALLY intrigued that you threw out it could be Widmore...that's definitely something that could be a real possibility.

As for Sun, what if she wasn't selling Ben out to Widmore so much as she was going to use Desmond/Penny as bait to get him to work with her? Just the way she said, "You know we're not the only ones who got off the island..." It's more than likely Ben she's referring to, but what if Desmond/Penny went into complete hiding after the rescue? Didn't Jack say something like, "Don't let him find you" when he was saying goodbye to Des? Add in Ben's threat to kill Penny while she's already in hiding from her father and I bet he'd be real desperate to find Penny & Desmond.

That's probably completely wrong, but I figured I'd throw it out there.

PS Ralph, Steph, Alirio & co - thanks :)

Almost forgot to mention:

That Karaoke was over and above the call of duty!

Now I'm thinking I should reconsider sending one in...

Way too much pressure! ;-)

Seriously though, any way we could make a reservation at a Karaoke place in San Diego during Comic Con?

I would totally buy that for a dollar!

My own ranking of the season finales:
Season 3 (no-brainer)
Season 1 (I thought it was excellent)
Season 3 (also very good, but imo suffered from a lack of dramatic tension since we kind of knew what was going to happed)
Season 2 (way too many plot holes, I think hands down it's the weakest finale)

Does that make today a holiday for Ally? If so, I wanna know what she's doing to celebrate.

Ben travels on horseback to Tozeur, Tunisia on October 24, 2005. There's No Place Like Home takes place on Day 100 or December 30, 2004. He traveled through time 10 months.

I feel fully satisfied with the finale. I really can't compare finale 3 with finale 4 because I was completely spoiled with the whole flash forward thing.

Awe, just the two podcasters I was hoping for.

Alirio said...

My theory on the four-toed statue:

I've been thinking about this since I saw it, but could not articulate it very well unti now... I hope
:-)

I'd like to preface this theory by explaining that in my archaeological studies at university I wrote quite a few papers on Pseudo-archaeology (Atlantis, Mu, Aliens from outer space helping Egyptians or Maya to build pyramids) and how all those theories were racist bullsh*t.

Archaeologists who thought certain cultures couldn't do amazing things by themselves were clearly suffering from racist tendencies that prevented them from seeing dark-skinned types as having superior intelligence.

I say this because it is the reason why I refuse to see the Island as some kind of forgotten ancient land belonging to some mythical civilization like Mu or Atlantis or even a lost tribe of Israel.

Therefore I tend to look at the origins of the Island, and the four-toed statue as being entirely plausible and explainable from a non-mythical perspective. I think the origins of the Island are futuristic, not historical.

I believe the four-toed statue is left-over from a civilization that has yet to come.

I had heard many years ago the idea (mostly as a joke) that the next major physical change in the evolution of humans would be the loss of our small toes. the small toe is, from an adaptation for survival point of view, completely useless.

I think Cuselof are deliberately using a four-toed statue to make reference to a Great Civilization from our futures, but the Island's past.

I think the Island has been moved in time forwards in Season 4's finale, but it has been moved backwards centuries after the four-toed people walked its shores.

I think this idea that the Island contains elements from the past (Black Rock) and future (Four-toed statue) will be used to explain the seemingly inexplainable Smoke Monster as a futuristic guard dog.

PS Sorry for the long post... :-)

it seems strange that Both Ben and Keemy had bombs on the freighter...i wonder if Ben's was a bomb at all?

-thanks for the podcast duders, i'm downloading it now.

- i cannot seem to get my thoughts together about the finale. Basically i just felt like it was sloppily handled. it felt as though the writers had spent the season writing themselves into a bunch of corners, and the finale was their chance to check them off with hasty explanations. It had a ton of stuff crammed in there, but that was because they'd spent the whole season introducing problems they may have had simple answers to but they didn't work out how they'd play together or in terms of drama.

There's that anecdote about season 1 where JJ Abrahms suggested the idea of the hatch to Damon & Carlton. When they asked what was in the hatch, he said that they'd come up with something later. It's his whole magic box thing. Well this episode felt like a bunch of those things coming home to roost.

Look at the opening scene. It's clever the way it picks up right where the "Previously On Lost" trailer ends, and it was exciting because I didn't expect them to revisit the airport scene. But what did the scene really add to the story? From the Season 3 version of the scene, we already knew that Kate didn't want to go back to the island, that she was annoyed with the way Jack was behaving, and she had a life to get back to. the only relevant piece from the new scene was Kate's line 'for 3 years, i've been trying to forget everything that happened on the island, especially the terrible things that we went through on that last day.' Okay, it's a nice tease for what's coming. The audience collectively thinks to itself, 'I bet whatever happened to them on the last day was crazy!' but it strikes me as a line you write long before you've figured out what actually went down. You've left a post-it 'crazy shit goes down on last day, add later' Other than being a hook, the scene was completely superfluous to the story.

I just feel like the show is becoming too dependent on the idea of "shocking" the audience. I think it has something to do with the fact that they now have a limited time to tell the story so they're in "reveal" mode. Before they kept leaving room for themselves by making everything a question. Sun would say 'i totally only ever had sex with you' and then give the camera a weird expression. The writers then have an opening to either write about how she's skanking it up or they can dismiss it as Sun being worried about the future. Now they ask questions like "What happened when they were leaving that they have to lie about everything?" and the answers feel very unconvincing.

- Are the Oceanic 6 lying to protect themselves? 'they sent the freighter to the island to kill us, what do you think they'll do when they realize we're back?' or 'to keep everyone left on the island safe'? They said both, and both could be true. Maybe it's a character thing. Jack is an asshole so he's lying to protect the necks of the Oceanic 6 (he's just a possessive jerk happy to have Kate all to himself) and Hurley is lying to protect the abandoned losties.

- one of the hardest pills to swallow was the way that the copter landed on the ship, patched up, picked up the convenient additional characters and left everyone else to die.

- I really liked the Sawyer sacrifice (even if it makes future Jack into even more of a complete asshole) and I really liked the scene where he comes up on Juliet getting her rum on because she saw the freighter explode.

- who all is really left on the island?
Juliet, Bernard, Rose, Sawyer, Miles, Charlotte, Locke, The Others, (and i'm predicting Daniel washes up on the shore of the island or Sumba, minus the red shirts)

- i like that the island is magical, and we've got these layers of technology on top of it, trying to harness that power. I'm big into alchemy and eastern mysticism (more fascinated with the people that believe it than the actual principles) which is why i responded so well to the whole DHARMA plotline. It feels a bit like they're rewriting DHARMA to be more buttoned-up scientists vs the hippie Others.

- see, i still love LOST.

Jordan said...

Agree with you Andrew about the Sawyer-Juliet scene. I quite liked it as well. Something about Juliet's expression to Sawyer while drinking from the bottle. I also thought Elizabeth Mitchell looked rather fetching in this episode. A bit more than normal for some reason. And seriously. Does anybody honestly think for a moment that Jules and Sawyer didn't bump uglies very shortly after we left them? I'm sure it didn't take long for them to finish that bottle after seeing the freighter blown to bits and knowing the chopper has left.

And I also liked Sawyer being the hero by jumping. After Frank's comment about needing to lose 200 lbs and the sad shot of Hurley looking embarrassed, the instant you saw Sawyer, you knew what was going to happen. I've been saying it for a while now. This entire season has been about establishing Sawyer as a heroic character. I was just worried that it would lead to him really having to sacrifice himself.

And could anybody in their right mind imagine Jack doing that? Hell no. He's only interested in helping people when he can win them as a trophy in the end. Again, I don't "hate" Jack. He is just really, really obnoxious sometimes. Like the scene Andrew just mentioned and I talked about in the last thread. Jack in the future saying, "Sawyer chose to stay!" becomes one of the biggest dick bag things to say ever.

Palm - we had been planning karaoke since Jay's birthday at the end of March but never got our acts together. We were originally going to do the song from Dirty Dancing or even Afternoon Delight, but someone else had to go and do Afternoon Delight ;)

But as far as the rapping - Jay wouldn't record me doing it til I practiced for like 2 hours because it was so terrible. There's a video somewhere of the first time I ever tried to do it which I really do need post somewhere bc it's so bad. Jay did his part in like 15 minutes & then we took another like 45 minutes to do mine because I kept laughing every time he would try to pump the beat out for me with his hand. "Exotic matter is a hypothetical concept of particle physics. It covers any material which violates one or more classical conditions or is not made of known baryonic particles. Such materials would possess qualities like negative mass or being repelled rather than attracted by gravity. It is used in certain speculative theories, such as on the construction of wormholes. The closest known real representative of exotic matter is a region of pseudo-negative pressure density produced by the Casimir effect."

looks like only two little rivets(?) are metal. that's too bad. i thought that RRB had caught an inconsistency. its really cool that the writers put that much thought into it all the way back at the beginning of season four. either that or didnt put thought into it and dodged a nitpicking bullet due to dumb luck.

but i still contend that the polar bear wouldn't fit into the Time Closet. so, he's gotta get transported either by a different tunnel, a bigger closet, or a random encounter with some negatively charged exotic matter.

i'd hope that Desmond and Frank need to go back to The Island too since they're fun characters. Walt too please.

There's a high possibility that Jin is alive. There's more than enough time for him to jump off the freighter between when he's standing on deck and when it blows up. Notice Kate's gone back to saying "eight fifteen" again after the whole season has pretty much stuck with "eight one five" - I believe even from characters who said "eight fifteen" before.

PalmerEldritch said...

was that future kate or current kate?

Chris JC said...

Island Kate - when encountering Keamy.

I often wondered if it was just a way of denoting American or English characters (although I'm not sure which iteration of the flight number Australians would use).

For example most folks over here referred to the band Blink 182 as "Blink One Eight Two", whereas in the US it was pretty much decided, and confirmed by the band, that they were "Blink One Eighty-Two".

It's another one of the less well known differences between the languages, the way we deal with numbers. Next lesson - differing stresses in words.

Having said that - I bet a bunch of you will now tell me that you said "Blink One Eight Two" and I'll look silly.

Anyway - I think Michelle Forbes's character also said "Flight Eight One Five", so I gave up on tht being a deliberate concept.

Maybe it's an attempt to get realism into the show, as in the real world people probably would choose to say it differently. It just feels weird.

i'm about to watch Aimee's soda experiment... should be interesting!

MB - I almost just pissed myself watching that video of Aimee. That's gold.

Thanks Futureally! :)

Colleen - let me concur on the mad rap skilz - that made my trip to the grocery store so much better.
I'm pretty sure several people thought I was mentally unstable b/c I couldn't stop smiling and bopping my head. I think I looked like the Butabi bros. from Night at the Roxbury while I was picking out produce - lol.

[ally] said...

I'm sure that was quite a sight, MB.

The most exciting thing to happen to me when I go grocery shopping is me having to wrestle avocados away from old Asian ladies. They're rowdy! And surprisingly strong considering their age.

Stephanie said...

OMG, Aimee's eyes were so big. That was hilarious.

PalmerEldritch said...

i recommend watching aimee's foot pad experiments. bizarre! that aimee has been sorely missed at the blogspot but nice to know she's solving all of life's mysteries for us and putting the videos up on the interweb. and, yes, hilarity does ensue.

mb, should i run (not walk) to the nearest copy of the moffat episode?

colleen, i know the higher octave stuff is usually his thing, but Jay did pretty well with the lower notes on the karaoke. you guys need to get Clif in on the karaoke. might i suggest "Damn It Feels Good to Be a Gangsta?"

p.s. post the rapping practice video

mb said...

Finished watching Coke vs. Coke Zero, and watching the footpad experiment now...what the hell are these things?!?

Screw Consumer Reports, I'm listening to Aimee from now on.

Palmer - I really shouldn't hype the episode - I don't want to presume how you will react, but if it were me I'd go for it. It's easily the best episode so far this season IMO. Of course you're talking to a spoiler guy and we aren't known for patience, which I hear is a virtue.

mb said...

Okay, so my theory on that powder that's in the footpads?

It's the powder that surrounds Jacobs Cabin.

Mittelos Bioscience needs cash (i.e. the attack on the island has trapped Alpert on the island and has drained $$ resources) and so they are putting the Cabin Powder into footpads and marketing them using an infomercial.

It's the only plausible explanation for what that shit is people.

[ally] said...

That Coke vs. Coke Zero is more hilarious than I thought.

robert, thanks for posting that. really good stuff. i'm trying to remember why Sawyer would think that he couldn't just take the little motorboat back to the freighter. did Hurley tell him that Locke was gunna move the island? were they thinking that Keamy was gunna blow up the island? i can't remember what Sawyer knew and when.

MB, i'm up to May 1st on your spoilercasts. funnyass stuff. girlfriend asked why i was sitting around in an empty room laughing while i was supposed to be exercising. i didnt know how to explain that a talking computer was waking someone up by playing George Michael music. actually, now that i write it out, that IS pretty easy to explain...

PalmerEldritch said...

Colleen said...

haha, thanks MB.

Palm - The video I mentioned earlier, is when I was trying to learn it in the car when Jay, Clif & I went to the beach a month ago (when Clif wore women's sunglasses) and after I failed miserably, Clif tried & failed just as badly.

I really need to learn how to make video files smaller so I can put them on YouTube. Paul C. had given me a program last year that worked really well but when my computer was restored, I lost it :(

Help would be appreciated~!

Herlihy - have you seriously eaten haggis? really?

I for one totally dig a good bread pudding. What I'm not a fan of is the bourbon (or some other alcohol based) sauce that so many restaurants around here seem hellbent on including in their bread pudding recipes.

Palmer - you are too kind sir. glad my sleep deprivation humor worked - it comes from current experience - lol

scrdmnkydst said...

Yeah, i've eaten Haggis. It's one of the prerequisites of being part scottish. you're not allowed to tell someone of your heritage until you've tried some haggis... it's true.

It's quite nice. It's much better when eaten on Burns Night. For some reason it just seems to taste so much better...

Also... i am not really offended by what aimee said... we are quite disgusting. But at least we don't eat Squirrel. *cough*you lot*cough*

It's quite obviously a ritual in Scottish villages in which they get the most handsome and verile male and sacrifice him on a large fire. Like a real life Wicker Man

Oh, Herlihy, you big kidder.

Actually... I took my namesake from a musician called Samuel J. Herlihy. Frontman from the Chichester band Hope Of The States... I'd be suprised if anyone has heard of them... but some of their music has been used on quite a few BBC Sport trailers.. Highly reccommended. They were the first proper band i got into, even though my musical taste has changed since then, i'm no longer a lover of wanky post rock, they still have a place in my heart.

of course, i HAVE had buffalo (bison really), moose, bear, deer, and caribou. that's reindeer to you Europeans.

scrdmnkydst said...

haha. you never fail to suprise me Chris.

Yeah, many people refer to them as HotS. It's just easier to say. I'm such a fan that i'm on their forum, which is sorta dying out now, since they disbanded in 2006. But they live on in Troubles, actual proper hardcore Post Rock, and an as yet unnamed band with 4 of the original members of HotS.

So yeah. I think i've finished geeking over them for today.

Stephanie said...

Just like Yemi wasn't Yemi, I don't think it's Claire who doesn't want Kate to take Aaron back. It's some other entity. I think Jack is Locke's successor. He's just been denying it just as Locke did for so long. The end of the show will be Jack leading the Others. That's my crackpot theory.

PalmerEldritch said...

i like that theory, steph. i really hope that Jack embraces faith (in the Island) and becomes the type of leader that he was in Season 1 by the end of the show.

[ally] said...

That's an excellent theory Steph and it doesn't seem too far fetched. I think that would explain alot.

memphish said...

I can buy that Jack idea Steph. I like it because it would give Jack something to do. So does Locke see himself and his refusal to accept his destiny as seen in his flashback in Jack's refusal to accept his?

As for the Claire/Kate thing -- Kate gets 2 different messages from that dream. The phone call says go back; Claire says don't take him back. Some have said she means Ben or someone else, but not Aaron, but she's sitting by Aaron. Kate's not the brightest penny so how's she going to figure out what to do.

Holli

Trevor McFur said...

I like that theory too Steph. Locke resisted for the longest time, and finally had to hit rock-bottom (defenestration and paraplegia by his father) before he could accept his destiny. Maybe it's the same with Jack, and rock bottom for him is becoming a drunk crazy druggie with a beard.

Trevor McFur said...

Maybe 'Don't you bring him back' doesn't refer to Aaron ... but jeez, the message was brought by Aaron's mother, who was in the room leaning over Aaron when Kate found her. And probably, the thought of dragging Locke's carcas back to the island hadn't even crossed Kate's mind. So I think that she can be forgiven for thinking that Claire was talking about Aaron!

memphish said...

To me that Kate's in a horror movie sequence made the least sense. I still don't really know what to make of it.

I've got a question -- a lot of people think the Island moved in time and so the O6 can't see it right now, but essentially it's still there. But I don't buy it because if that's the case if you're Widmore you just sit offshore until it comes back, right? So what do people think, did it move in time, space or both or neither?

Holli

memphish said...

Check this out.

Holli

Trevor McFur said...

I vote time only. I think that they telegraphed it a little bit in the Marvin Candle video, when he tells you that the rabbit doesn't really disappear, but only moved a second (or however long) ahead in time. Why Widmore doesn't just wait until it gets back? Who knows, maybe it's the same answer as, 'What exactly did Michael do that's so important that he had to come back?'

[ally] said...

I know that the purpose of The Orchid is to move things in time, but to me it makes more sense that things are moved in space as opposed to time.

But maybe it's both, because Ben jumped in both space and time when he turned the donkey wheel and ended up in Tunisia and some time later.

Trevor McFur said...

What I want to know is, how could Ben turn that big frozen metal wheel without ripping all of the skin off of his hands.

[ally] said...

Now that's probably the biggest mystery there.

mb said...

I keep hearing the "moved in time but not in space" theory and I'm not sure I buy it, but it could be possible if it is moved forward in time, creating a gap in time where it doesn't exist.

i.e. - it exists a few seconds ago and it exists at some point in the future (who knows how far - but it would have to be far enough into the future that people wouldn't just sit there and wait for it to come back), but it doesn't exist right now.

This could be why it shouldn't be done often because each time you move it forward, you create a gap in time where the island doesn't exist - a break in the island's timeline, like if you had a rope (which is the island's timeline) and cut it at a certain spot creating two segments and a gap in between. I have no idea why this would necessarily be bad or dangerous - I am totally talking out of my ass (it's amazing).

On a related topic - I loved the idea Ben and Ralph talked about (which I had literally just been thinking) which is that perhaps the Black Rock was sailing along and the island materialized underneath it. Fucking badass idea! :)))

PalmerEldritch said...

mb, have you finished that Time Vortex novel/choose-your-own-adventure?

i kind of like the Popular Mechanics theory that the negatively charged exotic matter creates a Casimir effect which keeps a wormhole open (a magic wardrobe or a twister to Oz) and that turning the donkey wheel didn't move the Island, just moved the open end of the wormhole so you have to get to the Island from a different location.

If Point A is the Island and Wormhole B is the entrance to the Island and Point C is right next to the freighter, you can move the end of Wormhole B to Point D without changing Point A or Point B. but if you're standing at Point A or Point B, the other Point would "disappear" and become inaccessible.

or something!

Trevor McFur said...

Whoa.

mb said...

Yeah Palmer - I was going to add that I'm more on board with that theory as well. There was a Star Trek TNG episode about that - I just remember two a-hole Ferengis getting left in the Delta quadrant b/c that end of the wormhole shifted and they wouldn't listen to Geordi when he warned them it was about to happen.

Hello...my name is MB...I'm also a Trekkie :)

re: "Doctor Who and the Vortex Crystal"
No, sadly, after searching for that book and buying it (and I rarely put much effort into looking for books) I still have not had the time to read it. Is it good?

Actually, I suppose I should be honest that it's not so much that I haven't had ANY time to read - it's that I spend that time watching Lost, Doctor Who, The Office, 30 Rock, Earl and podcasting and blogging. Oh - and spending time with those little people I have around my house....kids I think they're called? Daddy needs more reading time - true say (in Kim's words).

lol Trev -

I WILL match your nerdness b/c yes, I do remember that and almost mentioned it - lmao. Can't remember the shenanigans they got into in that Voyager episode though. Hadn't they managed to dupe some planet into thinking they were gods or something? maybe I'm getting my episodes mixed up.

IT'S a NERD-OFF!!!!!

Palmer - I actually did enjoy a good deal of Voyager - though I agree it had issues. It takes a lot for a die hard trekkie to abandon ship, let me tell you, but frankly - the theme song for Enterprise (the most recent series with Scott Bakula) just about did it for me - lol.

/"NERRRRRRRRDS!!!!"

mb said...

Holli - I think Miles does both

TWSS??

PalmerEldritch said...

i like how you two were the nerds and i was the one asking about the contents of a Doctor Who choose your own adventure novel.

Trevor McFur said...

I think that they were pretending to be prophets. In that episode, they discovered a wormhole back to the Alpha Quadrant that the Ferengi used to escape; but, in true Gilligan's Island fashion, the wormhole collapsed before Voyager could escape too.

I didn't mind Voyager too much; mb is right, it's hard for a die-hard Trekker to abandon a Star Trek show. Enterprise finally did it for me, too, although I think that I watched it for 2 years before finally giving up (and I picked it up again a year later when it was supposedly 'getting good').

By the way, Enterprise may have had one of the worst series finales in the history of television.

Trevor McFur said...

You win, palmer.

PalmerEldritch said...

hey, we can share the nerd glory. right?

andrew. said...

- in the immortal words of Ogre "NEEEERRRRDDDSSS!!!"

- i always try to side with the argument that requires the least explanation. The LOST writers seem more likely to never being something up again if the answer is too convoluted. So i vote the island moved in time and space because Ben turned the pretty wheel and we'll never get a more concrete answer. (See also: implosion of the Swan station) I just don't see Daniel sitting everyone in front of a chalkboard, explaining worm holes.

- I want Miles to only be talking to dead folks, but the scene with Michael on the boat & Charlotte on the island both point to him being able to "read" people.

One last thing about Enterprise (you see? - hard for a trekkie to let go - lol). I liked the first episode and some of the ideas they were putting forward, so I thought it totally had great potential. But then it seemed like they kind of kept going with the same story formulas from the last three series. I didn't watch the later seasons though so maybe it did get better.

lmao - the humor of that sentence just hit me :D

Trevor McFur said...

The next-to-last season was a major change of direction. Earth was attacked by an alien species, who announced that they were going to destroy the earth by blowing up a big chunk of it with a 'test' bomb. So the Enterprise's mission became to find the aliens and stop them from setting off the 'real' bomb (yeah, good plan by the aliens there, warn the people that you're going to attack a year before your weapon is ready). The last season was actually not too bad, they actually tried to bring it more into Star Trek continuity (like, Dr. Noonian Soong was in a few episodes, they went into the mirror universe for a couple). Probably it would have been a better series if they started the show that way, instead of pretty much ignoring all established continuity for the first 3 years.

And once again, they had a truly horrible series finale.

Chris JC said...

LONG POST! (Sorry)

Enterprise, by its very nature, showed up the ludicrous nature of buying guidebooks for a fictional universe when they keep changing it. There was a weekly magazine called Star Trek Fact Files here that you collected and put into binders which would just become less and less accurate as time went by.

Crass as it is to say, I don't think the makers of Enterprise would have come up with that plot direction were it not for 9/11. First overt reference was the shot of the cliffhanger ending of season 1 (which was one of the most total cliffhangers I've ever encountered - which was negated by some lazy device almost immediately.

Vortex Crystal - not played yet because (and here is a note of my lack of nerd credentials of late), I don't have a D6, and don't recall when I last did.

Although I DO call it a D6, so who am I kidding.

About squirrel eating: on BBC2 this evening was a programme called The Supersizers Go Victorian, the Victorian episode of a series in which two noted broadcasters eat for a week in the style of a period in British history. One of the snacks this evening?

Squirrel.

The whole Xindi storyline was, "Earth gets attacked by an invisible enemy, sends out the military to get 'em" ... no, it's not crass to think it might have been a little bit influenced by 9/11! Actually, I think I remember some criticism at the time aimed at the show for that very reason.

PalmerEldritch said...

haven't listened to the latest Jay and Jack yet but there is ONE major issue that i haven't heard discussed about the finale yet.

the rando with a maroon thong!

one of the women getting onto Daniel's boat had her thong heavily featured in the finale at the beach.

is this appropriate undergarmentage for a tropical island? appropriate for a beach rescue? has she been wearing the same thong since day 1 on the island? is this some sort of DharmaThong(tm) that she appropriated in the Hatch? perhaps Radzinski's thong?
