What do the patches represent?

Anyone with millitary knowledge, can you tell me what the decorations represent on Sgt. Austen's uniform?

Hey guys, found this site, full of the definitions of what the decorations are for - can't be bothered to go through the whole list right now, plus i can't quite make out some the colours and patterns on the photo i have, but everyone else can have fun looking through...

That is a sergant major, not sergant. On both arms are rank and on left arm is unit badge, the star on the left is for what type of unit he is in, ex: starc.
The ribbons on his left side are awards, honorary ribbons he has earned, and if he has served in foriegn country. The six stripes he wears on the left forearm are for each three years of service.

In Season 1, Kate mentions that her dad was in Ranger Battalion, but I know a lot of military start out in a regular career field and become recruiters afterward, or do special assignments, etc. I don't know much about Army insignias though, I was Air Force!

They are not Dharma logos if thats what you were hoping for! They are unit patches it looks like a 101st Airborne "Screaming Eagle Patch" on one side and the other patch I was unable to find anything recent looks like it coulbe a WWII patch, but hey I was in the Marines we didn't have such precious and colorful patches.

I don't know where the Marine is getting 101st patch from. That has an eagle on it and this guy doesn't have an eagle on his patches. One patch is for recruiting Command and the other one is a combat patch which it looks like a variation of the 3rd Army patch. Also, he has on a Kuwait Liberation ribbon so he probably got it in ODS and he's an infantry guy because he has a CIB, the blue thing with a rifle and a reeth. Also, he is not a ranger because he would have a ranger tab which he does not. The sergeant major and service stripes things are right.
