Sundown: Post Episode Discussion #2

If there is still good in your soul, get your mind out of the gutter; it's just the smoke monster. And nothing else. At all.

The CGI guys had fun with this ep.

Island Kate can either get her hair done or die. Then give us Alterna-Kate with her nice hair.

That's a great picture of Smokey penetrating the Temple.

the Uncharted series is fantastic. think the first one is $20 or $30 but you may be able to pick it up used for less. Assassin's Creed 2 was good, better than the first but heavily reliant plot-wise.

Batman Arkham Asylum is great.

oh! check out the PS3 thread on the SAS bulletin board for what people are into and what our PSN names are.

The last thing I'd want penetrating me is Flocke. No offense to the TLI listener that has a crush on him.

I am thinking my theory is right. I have a feeling that the black smoke is the one that will give all the Losties their happy ending. I still maintain that the events from the Flash Sideways happen after the events of the island.

PalmerEldritch said...

So,, Ralph, Jacob touched our heroes but Smokey will give them what they really want?

mb said...

I think I agree with you Ralph. What I'm wondering is if there's an ending to the story AFTER the flash-sideways stories we're seeing that merges the 2007 on-island story, with all the off-island 2004 stuff. Narratively it makes sense to me that they would merge the two time lines at some point (even though they are also temporally askew), and it seems like it might be anti-climactic to find out in the finale that we've already seen the end and the flashes have all just been an epilogue. I dunno - maybe that's b/c I'm already thinking of it now.

I'm just wondering if there's even more than "we're watching everyone's outcomes now"

mb said...

Just read a post on the Jacob's Cabin blog that sums up something I meant to say (and forgot) -

"the French judge (Rousseau) gives Kate an 8.4 on that dismount to evade the Smoke Monster"

And speaking of Kate - I don't think she's "undercover". I got the pretty clear sense at the end of the ep. that Flocke was perfectly aware of Kate's bewilderment (and that she has not been "recruited" yet), but wasn't doing anything about it yet.

PalmerEldritch said...

bad news for Knut's knuts.

PalmerEldritch said...

yeah, kate's going along cuz it's better than dying horribly. which is good enough for Locke right now. and better than being all "so, what do you think of my plan?" in front of his followers.

I really hate it that the show has failed to give Jeff Fehey or Zuleikha Robinson anything to do. It's like Smallville with Green Arrow.

John V. Holder III said...

Ok. Jacob and MIB have been engaged in some type of struggle for years. Maybe they were forced into the struggle by two men before them. The goal of the game is to keep the island safe, because it is special. MIB saying the island "is just a damn island" is clearly a lie (since we've been watching the show, we know that). But MIB doesn't wanna play anymore. He has never wanted to play and he wants to leave. Jacob, however, is selfless. He knows it is his duty to keep MIB in this game.

The only way for MIB to leave the game is to find himself a replacement. So he figures out a way to kill jacob and he makes it happen. Now, all he has to do is leave. First he has to find their replacements. This will be sorted out by how the sides split. We know Hurley is on Jacob's squad and Sawyer is on MIB's. So somehow, they will become the new Jacob and MIB. Hurley(8) and Sawyer(15). 815.

I know this thing is riddled with holes but I thought about it in the car and wanted to jot it down here.

John V. Holder III said...

Also...Claire? Still hot.

mb said...

So....you want to see something very random (to me at least) and oddly disturbing? (nothing NSFW or anything)

Anyone have any clue as to who and WTF this is?

he's gonna be in my head all day now. dammit.

mb said...

I like what your saying Holder - not sure if that's how Sawyer and Hurley's stories are going to end, but it's certainly possible.

I want a Jacob and MiB backstory. I need to see more motivation for these two than light vs. dark, or good vs. evil.

Kyle from Kentucky said...

I like it but Jack is probably the new Jacob and Sawyer is new dark man

Anonymous said...

Am I blinded by my utter hate for Jacob and Richard that I just don't see why Locke is evil? It probably also has to do with the fact that in the story of Jacob/Esau I thought Jacob was evil for what he did.

I stand by that unjustifies killing is wrong, but Locke has been "trapped" on this island for who knows how long (for sure more than 50 years). I think it's safe to assume he is a little pissed.

They did not show if Dharma was allowed to leave, but we saw that Locke gave the Others, followers of his enemy (possibly the guy wgo cursed him into being the smoke monster), a chance to join him an end their evil ways.

I really hope there's a Locke (Smokey) backstory. Maybe the finale will be an Island flashback.

My PSN ID is thakidissik. I'm on my iPhone, I'll check that link when I get home.

For some reason this just hit me

(481) 516-2342

Now I'm trying to figure out if there's a 481 area code.

John V. Holder III said...

Yeah I agree, Jack has to play heavily into the ending. I just like how 815 could be giving us a clue as to who will be the new Jacob and MiB. And I really feel like that's the end of the show...2 of our losties becoming the new J+MiB.

Maybe Jack sacrifices himself to protect the island (and humanity?) thus allowing the struggle to continue.

memphish said...

I think the side flashes are the world MIB makes for the LOSTies like he promised Sayid, but I think the reason they aren't perfect is that Smokey makes them by scanning and judging them, so the world reflects both their desires and fears. So Sayid saves Nadia, but he also saves her from himself since he views himself as a bad man who doesn't deserve her.

I also think that whatever they end up doing to permit MIB to leave is what creates the sideways world. Because we've seen each of them in the sideways world, I think they all go over to MIBs side in the end.

Dogen admitted last night that MIB was trapped. Doesn't sound like he had a choice such as the ones Jacob is so fond of giving. I still don't trust/like Jacob either.

Holli

John V. Holder III said...

The is no 481 area code according to Google.

John V. Holder III said...

Well, here's the thing. Maybe the flash-sideways is MiB giving the Losties the life they wanted. BUT I think the "what the wanted" timeline still converges with the timeline we know and love and they end up in the same position. I don't think the flash-sidewayseses are an epilogue as some others do.

memphish said...

I kind of want the timelines to converge, but I can't conceive of how they're going to do it without being total crap. If they do it, I hope they've got something over than "look over here," and then they're together.

Holli

John V. Holder III said...

But no, fuck it. I don't think MiB can or does change the past. That dude is a liar...he doesn't care about our people and even if he COULD change the past I don't think he WOULD. He's a selfish bastard.

John V. Holder III said...

Yeah, I want them to converge, but the island is underwater. How are they gonna pull that off?

OOH, IDEA. In the flash-sideways, Charlie gets to the underwater island and has to swim down and do...something that will result in the island surfacing and Charlie's death.

andrew. said...

Holli - that's pretty much the theory i was toying with last night, but then Jordan pointed out that the ability to create an alternate universe was really powerful, and seems out of MiB's league.
i like not knowing the answer just yet!

memphish said...

So Jacob has the power to resurrect Dogen's son, but MIB doesn't have a similarly awesome power? Sort of like Hurley's power is better than Miles?

Nevertheless I'm clinging to it for now cause otherwise the side flashes are meaningless fanfic. (Still sticking to that too.)

Holli

Anonymous said...

The thing is that if the island is under water, altverse/epilogue, and the 815ers are off island, then it doesn't sound like anyone is taking Jacob's place.

PalmerEldritch said...

unless Alterna-Jacob and Alterna-Smokey agree to get the hell out of Dodge when the Island blows up. Then they could be tooling around the Alterna-verse stealing watches from Korean guys and inducing labor in Australian girls.

mb said...

Kid - I don't think Flocke is necessarily EVIL, but he is bitter, resentful, and judgemental. It's the Dark Side of the force. In fact Jedi vs. Sith is not a bad way to characterize Jacob and MiB - it doesn't work 100% but close -

THE JEDI CODE:
Jedi are the guardians of peace in the galaxy.
Jedi use their powers to defend and to protect.
Jedi respect all life, in any form.
Jedi serve others rather than ruling over them, for the good of the galaxy.
Jedi seek to improve themselves through knowledge and training.

Now you could make the argument that influencing people to come to the island is akin to "ruling over them", but I would respond that there's a difference between 'nudging' people toward a behavior and commanding them.

And a few phrases about the Dark Side and the Sith:
"To be a Sith is to taste freedom and to know victory."

"Evil is a word used by the ignorant and the weak. The dark side is about survival. It's about unleashing your inner power. It glorifies the strength of the individual."

I don't think that the characters of Jacob and MiB simply boil down to Jedi vs. Sith - I think we will have considerable sympathy for MiB (some already do) by the end of the series, but there are significant parallels.

From reading a couple sites and blogs I usually frequent, the whole thought that the flash-sideways are the outcome of the island story really seems to be the theory du jour right now. With most people saying what Ralph did about Smokey giving people what they want or them getting it from defeating him somehow. I guess that's entirely possible. But with me, whenever a LOST theory takes over the internet and becomes general consensus, I find myself rooting against it happening. Two reasons. One, it's more fun when people aren't able to peg the show so easily. And IMO makes for a better show. And secondly, I'm like Kim. I really think that there is a subsection of the LOST fan-verse that read spoilers and try to play them off as theories. So whenever I start to read too many people all saying the same thing, I really begin to question the honesty of some of the fans. Not saying anything to people here. This place is usually on the up and up in regards to spoilers. But there are still spoilers by osmosis too. All it takes is a couple of spoiled fans on different sites to play off spoilers as theories. And then from that you get other fans to go, "hey, that's a good thought." And it goes on from there until you have a wide spread 'theory'. Even some people who are aware of spoilers who try to keep them secret can accidentally hint at them subconsciously. Kinda hard to theorize and totally ignore a big kernel of knowledge. I read Ryan mention in the last thread that there's a big spoiler out there now. So now we're more at risk for this type thing happening than ever. Guess I'm going to really avoid the average LOST theory around the net now. Simply don't trust that certain subsection of needy fan to not try too hard to come off too smart and clever. Shame too. I was really hoping that the writers and show-runners would be able to keep a better wrap on spoilers this season. Guess it's up to us to really work at staying spoiler-free now. Yay.

Jordan said...

i like not knowing the answer just yet!"

Word. I too don't want to be able to have it all figured out this early. To me it's so much better when the viewer isn't able to put things together until the end of the story. Like how lame would it be if you had a book or movie figured out halfway through? Cuz that would be the case here. 8 episodes in of a 16 ep season. I think I might be different than the average LOST fan. Most really want to be able to figure it out before the fact. I like playing around with the pieces we get and trying to make sense of them. But if I had my choice, I wouldn't be able to figure out where the story is going or what the big "ah ha!" is until the last couple episodes. Mainly when the show gets to that point where it wants us to know. Because in that case, it means the show has done a better job in terms of writing and creativity. I'd rather the show be smarter than it's viewers. But it's cool. I know some people's main kick they get from LOST is trying to outthink it. Whatever floats one's boat.

And regarding the Smokey gives everyone what they want idea. Yeah, it definitely seems a much grander scale thing than he should be able to do. Yes, he's able to turn into smoke and look like people and go all murder happy. But for him to basically reset or recreate the world or certain people's lives pretty much paints him as omnipotent. And if that was the case, why is he stuck on a silly little island? That and I just think it's too easy a solution to the story. Although it wouldn't make any less sense or be any easier than the writers solving questions with time travel and "the island is magic".

Anonymous said...

Jordan, kick back.

Not to insult the off island epilogue idea, but it's not rocket science.

We are seeing something (alt-verse) that needs to be tied into the show. The Islander's pasts do not match their alt-verse past so why are we seeing it?

There are only 2 logical common sense theories:
1. What we are seeing will tie in with the Island story

or

2. It is what happens when everything reset.

There are infinite ways to get at those outcomes. Now people are saying Locke will create the alt-verse where before people thought it was due to the bomb going off.

Personally I stay away from spoilers other than who centric the episode is. I guess in a way I am spoiled because I know a certain character will be alive due to him/her having a centric episode coming up.

2 is supposed to be

2. It is what happens in the end. (The end of the story).

Jordan said...

I totally get what you're saying Kid. Just was saying I don't want it to be so simple that people can figure it out strictly by guessing. In a perfect world, my entertainment is a bit more complex than that. Yes, it's logical to assume the two timelines will connect somehow. But for me, "Smoke monster is a magic powerful being who will grant 3 wishes" is overly simple. I'd rather there be more to it than simply that.

Also, it feels kinda hokey to me. What is going to happen? Jack and Kate are going to put Smokey in a headlock and demand he grants their wishes or else Sawyer is going to give him a wedgie? What, are they going to defeat him nobly in battle and make him have a change of heart? Or will it be that everyone decides to "leave" with him? I'd rather it be that the timeline is a result of the Losties beating Smokey somehow. Changing something that would drastically affect the timestream or whatnot. If it comes down to simply Smokey grants wishes, I'll be a tad disappointed in the writers.

And I really do think people need to be leery of sudden mass theories on the internet. We all know exactly what different takes we all can have on the show. When all of a sudden half the internet is on the same page, it causes me to go "hmmmm". That or the show is getting too obvious. Just my own personal take.

Jordan said...

And I have absolutely no prob with the alt-flashes being the island story's epilogue. That would def make perfect sense. Just a matter of how it comes to be. All I'm asking is the writers put some semi-logic behind it. Semi-logic meaning it's not something entirely pulled out of their asses. Smokey creating the new reality would be no better to me than if a 35 year old Walt time traveled to the island and created it with his mind.

Honestly though, really who cares at this point? The show isn't about making sense. As I said before. Magic islands, time travel, supernatural beings. At this point, the show could do absolutely anything with the end. I'm half expecting the final scene to be a close up of a computer and the reveal to be that Bai Ling was writing a novel the entire time. And as she finishes, her lesbian lover who looks exactly like Kate calls her to bed.

Just finished the manifesto...

Couldn't have said it any better Jordan! I've gotten to the point where this is the only LOST-related site (other than Lostpedia) I've visited since Comic-Con.

I'm so paranoid about being spoiled that I've gone totally dark on anything LOST-related and will continue to for another few months.

That's also the reason I've never listened to the "Listener Feedback" section of any podcast (except TLI). I did one time and someone tried to pass a spoiler off as a theory and it made me pretty f'n mad.

Oh well... As long as they keep this quality of episodes going, the end won't be as important to me as the fact that Season 6 stays consistently great. I'll ask questions and toss out a minor theory or two, but I'm not thinking too hard.

I'm going to keep doing the same thing I've been doing since the beginning and just trust that they'll give us the the answers we need to know when we need to know them. It's worked to this point, so I have no reason to think that'll change.

I like LOST.

I'd be happy if LOST went on for another 20 years but what I really want is for it to be done once it's done.

Leaving an escape for a possible movie or spinoff show or whatever would be like an excuse for the producers. Ben and Annie? We'll put that in a movie! Magic Box? Answer that in a spinoff!

Just make the last 12 hours as fantastic as the first 120

Chris, C*nt is a MUCH more offensive term in the US than it is in the UK. MUCH. As someone who doesn't find it that offensive, I'm not really sure how it's all that different than other slang or naughty words that mean the same, but don't have the same stigma. But it is pretty much an "oh shit, you went there?" word in this country for whatever reason. Where as you guys use it so much, I think it has lost it's meaning by now.

I thought it was ok.

I give DiCaprio and Williams mad props for being able to get through that script. Even though they tried their hardest, I found myself laughing a lot in this movie. This would be good, but in the words of Rainier Wolfcastle, "It's not a comedy."

I really liked the final line though.

So we went out and had some drinks and decided we wanted to go see Alice in Wonderland. It was weird. I feel like the movie wanted to be something but never quite reached its goal. Dunno if it was the movie or the alcohol. Hopefully another blogspotter will see it and share their thoughts.

Chris JC said...

Weirdly, one of the first (or may the first) TLI I listened to featured the unbleeped phrase "Kate is such a [that word]", leading me to refer to it in my first call. Since then, I think I've heard it once in the show and bleeped and generally asterisked here.

But I hear ya, Jordan.

I do have a female friend, however, who argues that technically "vagina" is more offensive than [that word] because "vagina" as a word used to refer for a scabbard or sheath for a sword, somewhere to slip one's weapon (which she found pretty insulting) and [that word] is derived from a word simply meaning "triangle" (which she found far more acceptable).

Although a quick research here suggests that the shared root "kunta" is also the word from which we derive the word "queen". Language is bonkers.

Jordan said...

Cunt (screw it, I'm just gonna say it) is MUCH worse than dick. I don't want to belittle racism by any means. But it's similar to the N word in that if you're not a chick, you better not say it. At least here in the states. Calling a chick a cunt is the utmost insult. Like I said, I don't see how it's any different than calling her a bitch. But that's how it goes. A chick can say it and claim ownship over the word. But a dude..... Hell, I called a Red Sox fan (who was a guy) at a Mariners game a 'stupid cunt' once, and the girl I was with starred a hole through me. As I said before, for whatever reason it's a lot worse a word in the states than it east across the pond.

scrdmnkydst said...

"you can't say that word! you're only allowed to say that word if you have one!"

Anonymous said...

First off, if go in knowing there's a twist in Shutter Island, you'd probably be better off knowing what it is so that you can pay attention to the details and see what you think in the end. This is because if you know there's a twist, it's pretty easy to figure out.

Anyway, my immediate reaction was not great, but I'm starting to like it more.

The blame for what I found wrong with the movie goes to Scorcece's direction. I think he's lost it. The Departed was fantastic, but what has he done since 1990? Aviator? Gangs of New York? Casino? OK, Cape Fear was alright.

The way certain scenes were shot came off comical (maybe that was Scorcece's intention),this is especially true in the concentration camp scenes.

My other problem with Shutter Island is that it used music where silence would have been more effective.

Still, I'd recommend it. Acting aside, I wouldn't necessarily say that Shutter Island is anything more than a movie like Identity (which I'd also recommend IF you've never heard of it).

t-dot kim said...

I really liked Shutter Island. I figured out what was going on 1/2 way through it b/c some things didn't quite make sense, but I enjoyed it.

Has anyone seen "An Education"? I'm going to see that tonight. Hopefully I can squeeze "Crazy Heart" in tomorrow. Then I'll be done with the major Oscar contenders. I wasn't as out of the loop as I thought.

PalmerEldritch said...

Well, she's certainly in it. I'm hoping for a double take with a statue in the manner of Face and the Cylon in the opening titles of The A-Team.

As for Alice, I'm not particularly a Tim Burton fan, and yet on Sunday I'm off to see it in Imax 3D. Not only that, but I had arranged to do so before learning that in the UK it might include a 3D trailer for the new series of Doctor Who. Not sure if I'm ready to see Matt Smith's massive boney face in 3D and the size of an SUV but hey.

Well, that's stupid but I will. PREPARE FOR EMAIL.

Ryan, if they show it I shall report on Matt Smith Skeleton Head trauma.

I think mostly of the shot where e first turns his head to look at Amy, but then I realise I'm talking about this in the wrong place.

On the Independent Spirit Awards Eddie Izzard mentions on IFC you can say the F word but not the C word. So does that mean the C word is worse than the F word? In my world, the C word doesn't come up much. I think of it more of a British explicative.

On British TV you can say "fuck" after 9pm but the use of "cunt" is usually not used, unless it's part of some grim drama. So, the word "cunt" is perceived as being worse.

One of my tutors once said that the reason why people think that it's such a bad word is because of it's describing lady parts in such a harsh unyielding manner.

I sent out a few invites to the Oscar Pool. Hopefully you get them. The site doesn't seem to be working. I'll try again this afternoon around 4pm EST to send them.

Apple have been caught making some new patents... One of which is for downloadable tv shows from the iTunes Store which would have adverts embedded into the file and would be unskippable, thus allowing Apple to charge less for them.

But, the reason why I'm posting this, comes from a sketch of what the proposed patent would look like.

ryan, that's pretty awesome. the picture, not the patent. and did you see spy pics of matt smith's doctor in shorts? i know you think he's a looker so maybe you should check the pics out.

Why couldn't that movie just have been called "Push"? The long ass name makes me angry. I hope you lose, Mo-apostrophe-nique.

In case anyone hasn't heard, Fringe has been officially renewed for a third season. Sweet!

Holder, It's not called Push because a crappy movie starring Chris Evans about people with superpowers came out with the same name a year before.

That said, they took that excuse and used it as a way to come up with the most obnoxious and arrogant title ever. You can easily have "Based on the novel Push" on the poster without it being a part of the official movie title. And who the hell is 'Saphire' that her name needs to be mentioned?

I hated the hell out of that movie, and hope it doesn't win a thing. Although I'm positive that Mo'Nique is a given.

How much do you want to guess the unskippable itunes ads will shave off the cost? 10 cents? Color me skeptical that this will cause them to charge all that less. More likely just a way for them to double their revenue.

Along with hating the title 'Precious: The Movie based on the book Push written by the author Shapire who appeared on the tv show Oprah and which was executive produced by TYLER PERRY who puts his name in every title of anything he ever makes which is likely the reason this movie has such an obnoxious name and did we say Oprah yet?' In addition to that, I also hate Apple. Excuse me as I go try to repopulate my 10,000+ song & 30+ podcast itunes library for the 10th time after it was yet again corrupted, all while watching an obnoxious John Hodgeman commercial about how Apple products never have issues.

Watch out Jay Leno. You're next!
