Spoilers. Hope they're good MB and Mac, but I'll skip for now.

Nice podcast Jimmy.

During Jimmy's podcast I noticed something odd during the Locke/Alpert scene. When Alpert tells Locke that he needs to get his people back to the Island Locke says but they went to the freighter, the freighter bl . . . How would Locke know that the freighter blew up? He'd been with Alpert's group near the Orchid.

Good point Holli. Maybe he assumed that it blew up when Keemey died.

There you go Jon. I'd forgotten that.

maybe Alpert knew and told him?

all sorts of weird things Alpert might have told him. spooky Island things!

Hooray! Some further agonising over whether to listen or not!

Good work, MB and Mac.

re: Ralph's post @the end of the last thread re: WALL-E. I agree that the film shifted gears once they got to the space-liner, and it got sillier, but it didn't really bother me (being that it's core demographic is GENERALLY the young-uns) - I thought it was a good ride.

"i feel that Pixar was afraid to bore the kids"

What do you think would have been a better storyline for the second half which would have kept kids interest? (not implying that their storyline was the best option necessarily - just curious of your angle)

mb said...

Thanks Chris!

Chris JC said...

I loved WALL*E ut I'm kinda with Ralph on that one. Then again, I'm the kind of guy who would happily watch 70+ minutes of a cleaning robot doing its thing with no dialogue.

I just finished reading a book on sci-fi films that never got made which contains a section about the Ridley Scott versionof I Am Legend which would have had over an hour of running time with no dialogue, no voice over and only one character before anything else happened.

I thought it sounded AMAZING.

Chris JC said...

Before I come off as some filmic snob, let me confirm that I've just been watching Predator - and not only that, but that the DVD I took out of the machine to put Predator in was Police Academy. Both fine pieces of work.

Time for Predator 2, methinks.

Jimmy said...

Chris,

Police Academy came out during my final high school year (in NZ at the time) and was considered "The" film to see. I'd nearly forgotten about it!

Good point earlier about Locke knowing about the freighter explosion...

I was freezing to death at the bus stop this morning and thinking about a few seasons back when Hurley and Sayid were listening to Glenn Miller on the radio, and Hurley quipped about being in a different time. It seems to me that the Island has always been on a different time, or possibly always skipping...but somehow the 815'ers are not in synch with it...and as a result now notice.

Also Ben has 70 hours to do "what"? I think make "occassional" jumps into time to alter things subtly....to right a wrong.

I have been saying a while that he is always one step ahead because he already knows the outcomes. In "The Other Woman" Jack says to Juliet something like "How could he possibly know we were doing this" and she says "I don't know...but he knew" or something.

In "Confirmed Dead" I noticed that a key line was when Ben was referring to the freighter crew and said to Locke and Sawyer "If you kill me you'll never know what great a threat they WERE". Like he already knew what the plan was...

Long post, sorry.

Chris JC said...

Oh, I've been meaning to mention this since it seems to have confused a lot of people but to me it's clear that, instead of Alpert being a super magic guy that knows what's going on in multiple time streams, the Richard Alpert who attended to Locke's leg isn't one that is from the same point in time as that version of Locke is, but one from the future who has spoken to Locke about these experiences and thus knows he arrived to attend to John's bullet wound, and give him a compass that came in handy later.

PalmerEldritch said...

so, you think Alpert is skipping time too? or did i misread what you wrote?

i assumed that Alpert was stationary in the timeline (not time hoppin') and had previously spoken to a time hoppin' Locke (perhaps sometime later this season) who had explained that the next time that Alpert would see Locke that Locke would need certain medical attention and whatnot.

Chris JC said...

Ah, perhaps. Either of those would explain it. I'd just heard too many people on blogs and podcasts not really getting it and thinking he sort of magically knew all eventualities.

It might be that everyone is hopping about the place now, just in different ways. Heck, I guess we'll see.

mb said...

"Also Ben has 70 hours to do 'what'?"

I thought it was just to get the O6 back to the island

mb said...

I too have been thinking that Alpert and the Others were still locked (no pun intended) to one timeline (or time stream as Chris put it), and Alpert is encountering time-bouncing-Locke at different points in his timeline.

Still doesn't explain him showing up at 5 year-old Locke's home and showing him the compass. THAT is plaguing me.

Ralph- said...

i cant read any of this spoiler stuff, but i just wanted to let jimmy know this. Awesome job!

Jimmy said...

Thanks Ralph...appreciate it. A blast, as always ;P

Jimmy said...

MB,

Yes, I know he has 70 hours to get the 6 back, but when I said what, I probably should have meant "why"? There seems to be a time conundrum that happens soon that can only be fixed by the 6 being back.

Jimmy said...

Me again...

So I've been thinking for a while that maybe around "Par Avion", "Enter 77", "Man from Tallahassee"...remember how we were all confused as to why Locke was doing everything possible to stop people leaving. Like blowing up the sub, blowing up the listening post (where the fake horse was standing, that place).

Was that time traveling Locke...not letting on what's really going on, trying to manipulate stuff?

I have always, always wondered why in the very first episode of LOST Locke sits down with Walt and asks him if he can keep a secret. Did we ever get resolution with that? Is that time travel Locke?

mb said...

Ralph (in case you're reading)

Worry not - none of this is spoiler-full - just speculation and discussion like usual.
Spoiler discussions only happen (and SHOULD only happen) at the SPLOG. If I know something spoilery I am very carefull NOT to discuss it here. So no worries.

- Chris - Don't Do It! Predator 2 is one of the worst movies of all time. I hate that thing soooo much! The only cool part of that movie is the 3 second shot of the trophy case.

- Locke's secret to Walt was that the island healed him, but time travelling Locke would help his blow-shit-up tour make more sense. Once again. I wish the characters were time travelling via their consciousnesses like Desmond, although i guess that would prevent us from getting pre-crash scenes.

- i really liked Milk, but i don't understand the praise Brolin is getting for his part. Milk hypothesizes that Dan White was conflicted about his own homosexuality but I didn't think Brolin every conveyed anything beyond stuffed-shirt. Emile Hirsch's character was supposed to be annoying, and definitely got that across.

- Finished season 4 of the Wire rewatch this morning. Season 4 is still my favorite.

- Still no word on when the last 3 episodes of Pushing Daisies will see the light of day?

Chris JC said...

Pretty much the only things I remember about Predator 2 are the different Predator visor modes and the phrase "you want some ganja, man?"

mb said...

Jimmy,

First - I forgot to say THANKS for the segment. Hadn't realized how much I missed your tonal analysis :)

Also, cool idea to wonder which, if any, Locke appearances might actually have been him time skipping.

memphish said...

I think the producers have said Locke's secret to Walt was what happened to his squiggly, squiggly legs.

As for TNT Locke blowing up the means of escape, I like the idea that he subconciously knew he had to prevent the O6 from leaving. I don't think he's smart enough to know why he knew that when we saw him on his S3 explosion tour. But why didn't Locke ever try to stop the raft? Are Sawyer, Jin, Michael and Walt not needed or was he just too distracted by the Hatch?

As for the 70 hours. I think Mrs. Hawking has determined that in 70 hours the Island will be in a reacheable location in space and TIME for the O6 to return and fix whatever it is they are meant to fix. I think she was plotting the Island's move through 4 dimensional space-time and that event window or whatever is said is in 70 hours take it or God help us all.

how can a movie with great lines like "You're rippin' my dick off and shovin' it up my asshole!" be bad?

oh, danny glover. you have a way with words!

Jordan said...

Nice one anonymous (read: coward). Thanks for making my point EXACTLY. I could go off about this. But I'm going to take a cue from the rest of the blogspotters and ignore it. Shit, I've already given too much notice with just this.

And count me in with Ralph about Wall-E. I really liked the film. But I didn't LOVE it like so many people did. And I think the last portion of the movie is exactly the reason why. If you made the entire movie like that, it would've been just another kids cartoon. Nothing epic or profound about it in any way. I would almost say that I enjoyed Kung-Fu Panda more.

Andrew (not razzle dazzle), Regarding Brolin in Milk. I get this feeling that he was more so nominated for his other performances in 2007-08 than the role of Dan White. Because he's been pretty good in a lot of stuff of late. Thus making him one of the more "name" actors of this current run. Combine that with the timeliness/relevance of Milk's subject matter, and there you have it. Oscar nom. And maybe it's more so due to how bored I was watching the movie, but I don't think it speaks well to Brolin or the writing. The stuff about him being conflicted with his own sexuality. Yeah, I didn't pick up on that.

RE: Pushing Daisies. I read somewhere that ABC was thinking about running the final 3 ep's in the summer. But I get the feeling that they won't for some reason. I know some people were down on season 2. But I recently caught up with the final 5 ep's. And I quite liked them. It really seemed to have found a couple new interesting storylines to plot the show around. Such a shame.

Season 4 of The Wire was outstanding. I genuinely teared up at the scene with Michael and Dookie in the car. Uh oh. Sorry. Gushing over The Wire yet again. And yes, it's the best show ever (sorry Lost). But as the obnoxious kids on the classic Lamar Burton-hosted children's tv show, Reading Rainbow, used to say, "Don't just take my word for it". And people wonder why I always say that Barack Obama and myself have so much in common. lol.

no HBO. :(

although, it must be on The Magic Box. hmmm...

RE: WALL-E - well, I understand and agree with everyone's analysis that the first half was more compelling as a movie, but I also think you have to look at the thing for what it is - a kids movie. Pixar certainly does a decent job of also making their movies entertaining for us older folk - but they aren't made for us.
No doubt I, like Chris, would love a 2 hour movie about a cleaning robot with no dialogue, and MAYBE someone could pull it off in a way that kids would love, but it's more likely that would lose most of the kiddos, plain and simple, which is why the movie wouldn't get made in the first place.

And if I tried to make the argument that "kids really ought to be exposed to better cinema", I almost immediately laugh in my own face - I mean, what was I watching when I was 8?

Alright - enough of my blathering, sorry for going on - I do actually agree with most people's analysis here

:)

Jordan said...

Yeah. That's where I watched it. ;)

Jordan said...

I agree with you MB. It is a children's movie. And people who want it to be something different aren't arguing much of a point IMO. It did however affect how much I enjoyed/liked the film. But I'm not the target viewer. That all said, I still thought it was very good. I just don't quite understand the people who say it should be nominated for best picture.

FOTC was great even though it was a little difficult seeing the Concords destitute.
I twittered today that while I was watching Morgan walked through asking "Are those guys illegal aliens?"
Here's another Proud Parent moment I forgot to share while we watched last week's Lost-
"Mom, I wish I could take physics."
Lost- inspiring young scientists.

Holy Cow it's only been a week and LOST is on tonight! I'm just not used to that yet.

BTW got some Bernard action on Leverage last night. He was grossly underutilized though.

- i don't know anything about tonight's episode but all of the tv critics said it's mindblowing, so i've got high hopes.

- The weather here is like standing in a big slurpee all day. I'm probably going to catch pneumonia.

- Mickey Rourke, afraid of being a legitimate actor again, has signed a deal to wrestle at Wrestlemania 25.

- on the podcast tip, i like the Jacob's Cabin Podcast, a good new entry. It's got an episode recap which i could skip but she raises good questions.

- Lost!

This is the best explanation I've seen for the upset Daniel Faraday at the beginning of Confirmed Dead. It's from J. Wood on the Powell's blog. It's because Daniel "remembers" Charlotte's bloody nosed death. Here's hoping J. Wood is right.

Holli

Stephanie said...

Charlotte's bloody nose could go either way. In a way, it's too obvious for Lindeluse but then again so was Charlie's death. They just didn't do it when we were expecting it. I say Charlotte will be around for a while.

Stephanie said...

Kim, I think it says a lot about you that you're a Dean Girl. I go back and forth now that Sam's acting a little bit sinister.

Jimmy said...

The catch with "LOST Deaths" now is that with the constant time travel element, you can always assume a character will be appearing. It was originally limited to flashbacks, but not so much now.

I believe that Rebecca Mader has been booked for the remaining two seasons...but that means that she could die tonight and then reappear any moment in a time travel jump.

It kind of diminishes the importance of a character death, I feel...

memphish said...

I agree Jimmy. At this point I can't figure out how they are going to do this entire time travel thing without diminishing the whole show. I know they've said repeatedly that you can't change the past, the future we've seen has happened, blah, blah, blah. But I can't figure out why that means the O6 have to go back to the Island.
