- maybe OLDTBAG is a reference to 'long balls Larry' (i just made myself shudder)

- Darjeeling was excellent. The only time i laughed out loud was at the very inappropriate time, (that line was just funny), but i had a smile on my face the whole time. Wes Anderson rocks.

- Now it's time to obsess until the new Coen Brothers & Paul Thomas Anderson movies get released.

- i heard a very vicious rumor that the Lost season was going to get cut in half because of the writers' strike, that we'd only get 8 episodes this year. Now just imagine one of those 8 episodes dedicated to Jack's tattoo again. Bring on the $100 pricing for season DVD sets and let's get those writers typing!

T-Bag

Anonymous said...

T-Bag (the British show) sounds awesome! Why is it listed as a drama? And why would T-Shirt help T-Bag if he was kidnapped? I guess I'll never understand.

I think I'll have to convince Ben to stick this in his queue.

Chris JC said...

If those DVDs are available region 1 I'll be surprised.

If you think that's mental - look up Wizbit.

memphish said...

S3 LOST Blu-Ray's price has been cut to $66 pre-order on Amazon. So while 8 episodes of LOST will cost >$100 in the UK, just for GW, I'm sure it would be a lot less here. And if you take the producers at their word, it should be free on-line.

Andrew, stuff I've seen says LOST already has 7-8 episodes in the can. Kristin from E who was sitting with Damon at dinner Thursday night says 14 scripts are finished. Supposedly during a writers' strike they can shoot finished scripts, but they can't change anything about them.

Of course they can still edit. I'm not sure how Damon and Carlton as writers are supposed to balance their duties as producers in that sort of situation. And I'm not sure how the Teamsters claim that they will honor the picket line plays out either. Are there Teamsters manning the crew in Hawaii? Beats me.

Hopefully it will all settle between now and the time they absolutely need to be at work on Episode 8 or 9. I'd prefer them not to shoot if they can't edit scripts as they go, but then I have nothing but an "artistic" and fan perspective to bring to the table.

Chris JC said...

Thanks, Holli.

memphish said...

Just piling on GW.

I'm interested to see what happens with this podcast. It was recorded almost 4 weeks ago it sounds like. Also "The Scoop with Jon" guy is Doc Arzt who just announced this week that he's not going to do The Tailsection or Buddy TV anymore.

The Jay and Jack parts were fun, if not terribly informative if you listen to other B+H Productions. The part with Jon was awkward, but okay. I wonder who, if anyone, will replace him.

As for the "ruining" I just felt that once Doc Arzt started being compensated (at least I think he was compensated) by Buddy TV that he 1) paid less attention to the Tailsection and only tended to post things he could post in both places and 2) really commercialized up the Tailsection even to the point of literal reader solicitation to fund his personal trip to Hawaii. It started to get the feel of, dare I say it, the podcasters who shall not be named on the Scott and Steve blog.

Also just as an esthetic matter I didn't like how clutterd the Tailsection look became.

So in conclusion (I can hear the sighs of relief) I hope Buddy TV doesn't pressure J&J to put them first at the expense of all the other things they do and I hope that a taste of compensation (if they are compensated) doesn't lead to gross commercialization of the B+H Empire.

This is an interesting choice for CBS.

Imagine Danny Bonaduce giving advice to today's celebrities. CBS Mobile has. Sort of. The Partridge Family star, who more recently had his own VH1 reality show, has faced his share of personal and legal troubles. He will provide his voice to Danny Bonaduce: Life Coach, a series of animated vignettes on most wireless carriers and streaming on cbs.com. The series of eight three- to five-minute installments will premiere Nov. 12 with additional episodes released every two weeks.

I'm impressed that Jay has the time to do all these podcasts, go to school, and maintain his long-distance relationship. I've been in one of those, and it really sucks up a lot of time.

PalmerEldritch said...

trevor, it sounds like he comes home on weekends and does three or four podcasts in a row. marathon sessions.

Stephanie said...

I see what you're saying, Holli. I think the problem with Jon's segment is an editing issue. Not that Jay didn't do a good job. When you record separate and edit together, you end up out of sync if not recorded at the same speed. The 3 Heroes had problems with this.

memphish said...

Steph, I was discounting the editing problems. To me it was more of the case of them being new to each other and kind of stepping on and avoiding stepping on each others' toes. If it continues, I'm sure it will get smoother.

Yeah. I get to drive to the airport now to pick up the brave hunters returning from shooting defenseless birds.

Actually, guys, the reason I'm on is to let you know I'm genuinely happy with the transatlantic price comparison of a DVD set I've just preordered which is the complete The X Files* (including the movie).

We get it about two weeks after you guys, but the Amazon.co.uk price for the PAL region 2 set is the equivalent of $145 (down from $416) whereas Amazon.com NTSC region 1 version of the same thing is $230 (down from $329).

So, bugger me sideways - I'm off to do something remarkable British, like enlarging the gaps in my teeth with a chisel while drinking some incredibly strong tea.

Palmer, that surgery is my hubby's bread and butter. I myself have also had the surgery and highly recommend it over the doubled over on the floor in pain a bad gall bladder causes. In my case I had the surgery on a Thursday and was in and out in less than 4 hours. I was out and about in 2 days and kickboxing in 2 weeks. Assuming they can do it lapriscopically and don't have to open him up, every thing should be peachy keen pretty fast. And pizza--no problem.

That's kind of a strange idea that the broadcast networks would air cable re-runs. Since most of those shows air in the summer I've already watched them if I was interested. Of course I don't really object too strenuously to watching Michael Weston from Burn Notice again even if I know what's going to happen. But I'm much more likely to do my own counter-programming courtesy of Netflix rather than rely on the networks to meet my needs.

Palmer, I'll add my 2 cents about the gall bladder. He should be better than new within a couple of days (also assuming that it's all done laparoscopically ... if he's opened up all bets are off). I'd say maybe hold off on the pizza, at least right away. Sometimes patients need to readjust to eating greasy foods again once it comes out. But apparently ... not everyone has that problem!

memphish said...

Nope. Once that baby is out of there, bring on the grease! Well, except for the duck gumbo which caused me to spend kiddo's first Christmas wacked out on morphine pre-gall bladder removal. PalmerEldritch said...

heroes was fun but the writing was derivative crap and West is the most annoying character ever. and claire is a moron. and hiro sucked.

I'm glad that the plot threads are finally coming together. And thank god, Hiro is no longer in the past (funny that he jumped back to now rather than back to when he left from). But all of a sudden, all of the stories are coming together (except for Sylar and the Dunder Twins, and Monica) ... it's just too bad that they've wasted so much time getting here. And whether it gets back to being good or back to being crap, there's still no excuse for the Chunky Soup they came out with in September & October.

There's a LOST mobisode out! I watched it on hubby's Verizon phone. It's a "missing moment" from an episode that aired in earlier seasons. Sort of a deleted scene that wasn't filmed and deleted until now. It's not on the web yet that I know of, but DarkUFO is working on it.

My biggest problem with Heroes at present is that anything I get into (Matt and Nathan playing detective battling Matts Dad) is counter acted by that bullshit banality of Claire and West (the most irratating dude I have ever seen).

I'd like to add that turning up at someones house as a teen unannounced to cook breakfast is called "Stalking" in my book...and for the Mum to support it is equally incredulous.

I also cannot stand Caitlin.

If anyone here wants to watch a quality film get your asses out and see "Michael Clayton".

Andrew, is the relationship with Conrad supposed to replace the small, ridiculous thinkgs going on each episode? I'm asking because the relationship seems like it's supposed to be more shocking than it comes across. Do you know what I mean? It seems to be replacing the taking a picture of setting a fart on fire, dog peeing on motorcycle accident victim, porn actor losing control of bowels onset- things that bothered me this season. And also, is it pissing you off that the ex-wife thinks she has a right to the pension? Shane was freaking me out.

Stephanie - yeah, i've got a lot of problems with this season's lack of direction and drama. It might be unfair because i watched the 1st 2 seasons in a week just before this season started but after U-Turn left the picture things got really lax really quickly.

The Ex-Wife character sucked and i'm glad she's gone. i could understand her feeling jilted and deserving of the money, but not the way they portrayed it with her passive aggresively blackmailing Nancy.

Shane totally freaked me out, even while shouting out my neighborhood. The preview makes it look like they're going to go with a cutesy imaginary-daddy angle instead of the severe psychotic break that he seemed to experience.

i don't know if the relationship with Conrad was supposed to be shocking. Considering that they were toying with it since season 1, it certainly didn't shock me. It also doesn't feel particularly dangerous like most of her past relationships.

i'm not entirely sure why i'm still watching the show to be honest.

That Heroes article is great and just what I wanted to hear from Tim Kring. He's finally admitting that all the things we've been ragging did indeed suck. And hopefully someone/s will be buried alive very, very soon. It's just too bad he didn't bother watching his own stuff (in editing) until it was too late to prevent boring and annoying the stew out of the audience. Of course, now the stakes for Vol. 3 are really high. If he says all this and then makes the same mistakes, he's history.

memphish said...

I don't think reality shows are required to hire WGA members though. And you'd think by now Jeff Probst would know what to say.

Holli

[ally] said...

They're "closet" scripted. Therefore they wouldn't have to strike, cause it's probably scripted by some college kid.

Jordan said...

I just read that CBS might throw out an early season of Big Brother in Jan or Feb if the strike is goes long. So I guess the reality shows are safe.

And Fox just announced that the Jan season premiere of 24 has been postoned indefinitely. Is Lost far behind?

Honestly, what would you rather have? Just an 8 episode run in Feb/March? Or wait an extra long time for the actual season 4 the way it was meant to be?

memphish said...

I want 8 right now! The idea of waiting even longer than Feb. '08 is so disheartening that I'm afraid I'll give up (and others with me.) Now you know I won't actually give up, but others probably will.

Holli

Jordan said...

See I dunno Holli. Remembering how lackluster the first 6 eps were as a stand alone piece, I fear that people would react adversely to a clifhanger that was originally meant to last one week lasting months on end. I also fear that if they just do the 8 now, whenever the finally pick back up, they might have to change up what they were planning to do. I don't want to see an 8 episode "season 4" and then go on as planned for the final 2 seasons.

memphish said...

I know Hollywood executives aren't exactly the brightest people in the world, but why are they doing this? Give the writers some itty bitty percentage of new media income. Be prepared to give similar itty bits to the actors and the directors whose contracts expire in 2008 and then have the accountants work until there are no profits like they do now. Do they really think the writers and actors and directors are going to give on this issue? Instead they are pissing off their audiences and the results are going to be no profits because we're going to be watching nothing but BBC programs when this ends. GRRRRRR.

Holli

memphish said...

I agree with that last part Jordan. I don't want 8 less episodes than the 48 we're looking at now. And I agree there would be frustration with just 8, but I think there's going to be even more if we have to wait almost 2 full years to see new LOST.

As a person who has been rewatching what we have and finding that it's getting old and I want answers, having to wait even longer sucks the life out of me.

On an unrelated matter, how many days does a college annual fund phone-a-thon last? I'm avoiding giving money to my college and they've called 3 nights in a row now.

I've already seen all seasons of 24. Not sure what I'm really looking for. Other than nearly everybody I know who has watched BSG or The Wire raves til no end. I'm not a huge sci-fi guy, but I like a good story. Is BSG compelling on that end? Here's the question that will probably help me the most. Is it more Star Wars or Star Trek? As in, is it more of an adventure type show or whatever the hell Star Trek is. Just kidding Trekies. How many episodes into BSG are they?

PalmerEldritch said...

4 hour mini-series, 13 episode first season, 20(ish) episode second season, and 20(ish) third season...

BSG is closest to... uh...

neither Star Trek, Star Wars, or Stargate for that matter.

it's closest to... uh... LOST? just about every episode is part of a larger arc and almost always part of the overall arc. things are pretty freakin' depressing. stick with it PAST the mini-series (which i didn't like).

andrew. said...

Prison Break - dunno. i saw parts of episodes when i was watching 24's 5th season. it seemed pretty ridiculous.

The Wire - Seriously the best TV show ever. Brilliantly scripted seasons that juggle 100 different characters and subplots but also pay them off believably and satifyingly. Episode to episode it plays like a good gritty cop procedural but sneaks in some serious emotional punches. The last season is in the can and is scheduled to air in January regardless of the strike situation.

Firefly - good sci-fi fun. It kind of reminded me of Star Trek The Next Generation with Han Solo as captain. The good and bad news is that the show got bagged after just 1 season which kind of fucked up the bigger story, but everything is on DVD and ready to watch without crossing picket lines.

Battlestar Gallactica - awesome grim sci-fi with some serious stakes. The 1st 2 1/2 seasons will knock you on your ass. The bad news is that the last 1/2 of season 3 seriously sucked and season 4 is probably not going to come out until well after LOST starts back up.

Man, I miss BSG. I think I'll put the DVDs on my Christmas list. Hey, speaking of that great show, my favorite Cylon was on Bionica Jones tonight. I was finding Tom quite charming until Palmer mentioned the Beau Bridges likeness.
Jordan, BSG contains 95% less cornball than Star Trek.
I second these of Andrew's list.
Sopranos
Deadwood
Carnivale
Homicide: Life On The Streets
The Shield
I have stuck Veronica Mars in my "queue" who goes by the name of Jason. I think he's like Elias' Chinese guy. After VM, I think I'll go with Six Feet Under.

New Battlestar Galactica is like old Battlestar Galactica twinned with Space: Above and Beyond but with the depression ramped up.

The last time there was a writer's strike like this, we got Star Trek: The Next Generation season 2, so thanks for that (Borg notwithstanding).

See, over here we had an incredibly popular sitcom called Only Fools and Horses. It had a disappointing audience for its first series but the BBC gave it another chance. Second series was also a failure. Before they canned it completely they gave it a repeat run in a different timeslot. Huge success.

So, would it make sense to re-run shows killed in their prime but have had a popular showing on DVD? Fills the space and gives the shows another chance to find an audience.

Stephanie said...

You said "it would make sense", Chris. TV exectutives here don't seem to use their common sense when making decisions like over there.

PalmerEldritch said...

steph, television producers dont make sense over there either. that country gave the world the Teletubbies. ack.

Chris JC said...

We've fallen a bit more heavily into line with US television procedure, killing a show if it's not performing (though usually it's thoroughly deserved).

Another well loved show that was nearly cancelled after a poor early showing was beloved children's favourite Rainbow, but it lived to fight another day and then ran for twenty years.

Sometimes we do stick it to 'em - Hardwicke House was snuffed after just two episodes when there was a tirade of complaint. As the credits rolled on the second episode, the continuity announcer said that the series would return "later in the year" - that was 1987, it's never been on since.

Finally - could you really not handle Teletubbies?

They are as nothing to the twin assault of creepy children's insanity, Boohbah (from the creator of Teletubbies) and In the Night Garden (from, er, the creator of Teletubbies).

In Britain,we like to think we stand alone, but over here, we still have a bit of a European sensibility about what stories children should see, that's why some (the best ones if you ask me) tend to be weird or slightly disturbing.

And on that subject, let me round it off with an ancient commercial for a chocolate snack that's actually illegal to sell in the US.

CHOCADOOOBIE!!!!!

Stephanie said...

Illegal because some neglectful parent let their child choke, maybe? I think we have Boobah here now. They look familiar. I don't watch much children's tv lately. I got my fill with the Teleltubbies. Want to know Morgan's first word? La La Po.

The 1938 Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act, prohibits embedding "non-nutritive items" in confections, so the Kinder egg with its crappy free toy is a total no-no.

You're not missing much, as my previous forum sig (courtesy of Bill Bailey) said:

"I'm English, and as such I crave disappointment. That's why I buy Kinder Surprise. Horrible chocolate; nasty little toy: a double-whammy of disillusionment!"

Jordan said...

Classic South Park last night. That was just awesome. I always thought Guitar Hero was pretty stupid. lol.

Palmer, I watched the Bionica Jones episode the other day where they have her go under cover as a British school girl, hence allowing her to use her actual English accent. How convenient. lol. I think they should just leave her with that accent. She does a pretty convincing American accent. I wouldn't have known she was British if I wasn't told. But now that I've heard her speak her in normal voice, I can't help but think that she's putting on her "real" voice in the show.

And to keep it on ghoastwatch's favorite topic. What is it with Brits doing American accents anyway? Why is it that British actors can pull it off quite effortlessly, yet every Brit I've known or see try sounds like they're doing a horrible John Wayne impression? There must be a specific something about doing an American accent that they teach actors.

Jordan said...

And back to the tv on dvd recommendations. Series that I highly suggest you check out if you have not:

Arrested Development
The Sopranos
Curb Your Enthusiasm
Oz (not for everybody however)
The Office (UK & US)
Six Feet Under
Weeds (although this season is kinda dumb)

And Steph and Andrew, I am compelled to counter your recommendations of Carnival with an emphatic "NO WAY!" I HATED that show so much. I spent half a season thinking to myself, "Hey this is pretty interesting. Uh...at least I think it is". Then by the end of the season I realized that everything I found interesting was only because the show was being crytic and vauge. I won't say that people shouldn't or can't like it. But I felt like I wasted a good chunk of my life watching that crap. Kinda like when I watched I Heart Huckabees and Babel.

andrew. said...

- i used to get Kinder Eggs from my friends in Germany and my friends in Japan & Taiwan. The ones from Germany had cheapy dollops of molded plastic. The ones from Asia had complex multi-piece kits that you put together for little feats of miniature engineering.

- i really liked the setting & tone of Carnivale. Up until the very last episode it was one of my favorite shows ever. From what i've read on the internet and the little hints dropped in the finale, i'm kind of glad that the show got cancelled & managed to retain its mystique. Clancy Brown, Clea DuVall, Michael J Anderson... the whole cast was awesome.

- i think i might need to netflix Oz for the strike. i liked the 2 or 3 episodes i saw, but was scared off a little by some of the more theatrical departures.

Jordan said...

Do it Andrew. Oz is one of my favorite shows of all time. It does get a bit absurd during the last couple seasons. But it is still a lot of fun. The show has some of the best character development I've ever seen. I'm almost sure that it paved the way for shows like Lost that have ensemble casts and which the storyline is very much character driven. The show is worth it alone for the simply awesome performance by Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Mr. Eko). His character has to be the most vile, despicable guy in tv history. Yet you at times kinda like him. And Harold Perrineau (Michael) is the narrator. If you can get past the fact that prison couldn't possibly be that dangerous and that many murders couldn't constanty happen, and the violence doesn't bother you, it's a great show. Especially for it's time.

[ally] said...

I feel live I've seen just about everything that there was on TV, although there's much more out there for me to explore. Things to catch up on while the strike is on for me:

Oz (Since I like Prison Break, I'll stick with a prison theme)
The Wire (I've heard good things about it)
30 Rock (I never caught it while it was on TV)
Entourage (just mindless fun)
Big Love (this just sounds interesting somehow)

Final thought: i just got back from lunch and had more margaritas than food. so i think i'm drunk now, either that or i just have a good buzz on. should make for an interesting work afternoon.

shhh... don't tell the boss.

Really awful: Keanu Reeves, David Anders (Kensei on Heroes), Malcolm McDowell, Eddie Izzard

Good: Marlon Brando, Johnny Depp, Peter Sellers (Dr. Strangelove)

So how do people rate the Brits on US TV at the moment - Kevin McKidd, Anna Friel, Damien Lewis, Hugh Laurie?

Also - Irish accent should not be attempted by Richard Gere ever again.

PalmerEldritch said...

did someone mention Dr. Gregory House?

Jimmy said...

A lot of people here have no idea Hugh Laurie is/was a comedic actor originally. I remember "A bit of Fry and Laurie" on a Friday night or something similar.

I see 24 is not going to be released on time this season...and given last seasons 24 I cannot imagine it'll affect me in anyway.

Can I also mention that my favorite moment in Teletubbies is when the loud speakers come out of the ground...it's all so Orwellian to me!

Lost to air 8 eps in Feb: Interview with Damon Lindelof

It looks like Lost will air eight episodes and then go dark. Does it sadden you that you're not able to deliver those 16 in a row that were promised to the fans?
Yes, it does. I feel like the worst thing we could have done was to plan for a strike and plan accordingly. Everybody had to be optimistic, because then it would have felt like why does episode eight feel like such a conclusion? We learned last year that the show moves at a certain pace, and you can't build up critical momentum in the first six episodes. In fact, when you are doing 24 straight episodes of a show, the first six episodes are a lot of tap dancing and some writers are able to tap-dance very effectively. Cable writers don't have to tap-dance at all, which is why all their shows are so great.

Interesting.
Yeah, and I think that's something Heroes is getting unnecessary guff for right now, too. They're getting a lot of heat because the story can't really start until episode seven or eight. And I remember all this bad-mouthing going on about our show last year, and I talked to Tim [Kring]. I said, "This all feels so familiar to me—don't worry, it only takes one good episode to round the corner and then everybody is back on board again." But an eight-episode season is an incomplete season, and I am not going to try to spin it any other way.

At the end of the eighth episode, is there any sense of conclusion whatsoever?
It's as much of a conclusion as, say, Ana-Lucia and Libby getting shot.

Wow. Really?
Yes. And you'd be, like, oh my god, I can't believe I have to wait another year and two months for episode nine of this season.

So, it's a cliffhanger?
Yes. And that's the thing, we really planned out the three seasons of 16, 16 and 16...so the idea of having to come back and maybe do a 24-episode season, and that would be season five is just...I can't look the fans in the eye and tell them that we're executing the original plan anymore.

Will the storyline have to be tweaked?
The story will remain the same, but the way [it's] constructed is a lot like saying to J.K. Rowling, "Can you do it in eight books?" And she goes, "I don't want to write an eighth book." And they say, "How about you just take the seventh book and release two 400-page books?"

Just so I can feel like a part of the blogosphere again - I put a small spoiler on the SPLOG

Generally you'll find that the more laid back the accent, the more convincing the British actor hence Laurie being much better than Izzard (who aways sounds like he's doing his tortuous Christopher Walken impression).

There are exceptions to every rule, though, and in this case his name is Tim Roth.

Jordan said...

This is bad IMO. Cuz they had a set story to tell in season 3 that is unlikely to be told correctly. Not only will the episode 8 "season finale" be extremely frustrating, there was likely an original season 3 finale that will not be shown correctly or have the intended effect if lumped in with season 4. Man, this blows.

Chris JC said...

Oh, and congrats, MB. I think this may have finally caught up with you.

Back to LOST. Messing with Cuseloff's vision -- not my favorite idea, but I'd still rather have 8 starting in Feb. even if I have to wait for #9. I'm not thrilled with what he said about tap dancing. There's only 48 episodes left yet. Take off those damn tap shoes.

Holli

Jordan said...

When Tim Roth is screaming in pain after being shot in Reservoir Dogs, he reminds me of Mr. Jinx the cat. You know, "I hate these mieces to pieces!"

Jordan said...

Holli, I think I'd honestly rather wait a few months, have them air season 3 as one than just get a few episodes and some unintended cliffhanger. From the sounds of it, dealing with the hiatus after episode 8 and it's "anna lucia getting shot" style cliffhanger is going to be more maddening than having to wait for season 3 to start.

And I simply am not a fan of a show's vision being messed with. To me, it can only adversely affect a show where the writers had a plan. Damon and Carlton basically have a rough outline. And on it, it says "Season 3 starts this way and ends this way". That's totally f'd up now.

Well, at least we can look forward to lots of "the strike is to blame" comments for when things don't go over well the rest of the way for the series.

PalmerEldritch said...

mb, congrats!!! i'm really happy for you and eagerly await The Deuce's Thomas The Tank Engine Spoiler Blog.

jordan, i'm downloading the Uncharted demo. can't wait.

i've always heard that actors in English speaking parts of the world outside of the US can do a pretty good American accent just because of their over-exposure to American tv, movies, media. to illustrate this point, when i vacationed in England oh-so-many years ago, the only thing on TV was "Can't Buy Me Love" with McDreamy and his ride-on lawnmower.

PalmerEldritch said...

oh! MB, Bruce Greenwood (nowhere man) will be Christopher Pike in the new Star Trek movie. BAD ASS.

p.s. those were spoilers

Jordan said...

And one other thing about the writers strike. Yeah, they have a decent gripe about not getting a bigger cut on dvd and web content stuff. But what about all of the thousands and thousands of lesser people who work on tv shows who are now forced out of work? People who don't make anywhere near what the writers make and who are now not working with no reason. It's easy for the writers to strike so they can get a raise. But these stage hands and make up artists aren't getting anything out of this. Pretty egocentric on the writers part if you ask me. Oh wow, millionare Steve Carrell has no problem shutting down shop and supporting the writers. But what about everybody else. Like in most things in life, the little people get the shaft once again.

Jordan said...

Hollywood is so quick to use the "think of the little people" angle when trying to throw a guilt trip on people for internet piracy, but totally ignore it in a case like this. Total bullshit IMO.

mb said...

Thanks Palmer! I like that casting a lot - wish I knew more about Chris Pine (Kirk).

Chris JC said...

MB - I've read your spoiler and I approve. That's the only Bell LOST will ever need. Kristen Bell can sod off.

So, how has this strike even happened? Surely the conversation should have gone:

WRITERS
Hey, we've just noticed that we don't get any money for episodes sold online.

HOLLYWOOD
Shit, my bad. Of course you should get paid for your work, sorry for the oversight.

WRITERS
Hooray!

AUDIENCE
Hooray!

JACK BAUER
Damnit!

And yet there's talk of it going on until next year. Give them the money they've earned you greedy bastards.

Jordan said...

Best case scenario as I see it. 8 episodes in Feb, 8 eps in normal fall season time, and then season 5 next Feb as planned. Is that too impossible to hope for? Or is it going to be all in Feb or bust?

memphish said...

I just don't see what the TV producers especially think they are going to gain from pushing the writers to strike. This will give everyone -- even the people who I contend fall asleep watching CBS shows and driving up their ratings -- time to figure out DVRs so that we can all skip commercials together and watch things on our own schedules.

If TV execs aren't going to uphold their end of the bargain by giving us new programming at given times, then we're not going to hold up our end by learning how to watch TV on our own schedule be it within the week DVR watching or waiting for DVD sets. The last prolonged writers strike drove overall TV viewership down 10-15% permanently.

This strike makes me angry at the execs, not the writers who want $.08 off the $30 I pay for a DVD. Seriously execs, you can't give them a .01% greater cut? It's not like you won't pass the cost along to us. This reminds me of how the first President Bush didn't know what a grocery store checkout scanner was. Do the network execs actually realize TiVo is something people use to avoid commercials and aren't some renegade cable network named Teev-O?

Holli

memphish said...

Sorry, but there's no rant. I know y'all will just skip it if it bores you.

The biggest problem with this air 8 and we'll get to the rest in the future stuff is that the actors and the directors guild contracts expire in 2008 as well. If they don't come up with a fair way to compensate the writers this is going to drag on for another year with the actors and directors. We could get 8, the writers could settle only for the actors and directors to walk out and leave us hanging another giant amount of time.

That's the last rant for tonight. Promise. New Office soon.

Holli

memphish said...

no = more in the first sentence of the last post. Sorry.

Holli

Jordan said...

Yeah, I read that there's a strong possibility that both the actors and directors may strike next year. Might be a very dark period in television history. Get ready for a lot of reality television.

memphish said...

Holli

PalmerEldritch said...

wait. is that show a parody on purpose? or are they just accidentally making the worst show ever?

memphish said...

Palmer,

It's not meant to be a parody. It's 30 Something for 25 Somethings. It's the same people who made 30 Something and My So Called Life. Reviews, okay review I heard on NPR today, are pretty good. Each episode is only 8 minutes.

This strike must end so that my Thurs. night comedy lineup continues. Earl - The Nazi Gazpacho and 30 Rock - Pop Tarts just cracked me up. The Office - Michael and Dwight in the woods was a meh, but turning Jim into Michael, that was the British Office's Tim at his best. I also liked how they made it clear this office is like it is because of all of them, not just Michael.

Jordan said...

I'm with Palmer on this. That show clearly isn't intended for "quartlife" people. As somebody just turned 26, I don't see much to relate with. Looks like a show about mid-twenty somethings written by mid-fourty somethings intended for mid teen-somethings.

And Palmer, I remember The Bu. Back when Andy Samberg was funny.

I like how they've brought back the "Jim is going to be trapped here at Dunder Mifflin for the rest of his life wasting his talents" joke if that's what it is.

The Deuce is so pretty, MB, that I'm afraid I'll catch Baby Fever.

andrew. said...

the reason for the strike isn't simply getting an extra 4c for every DVD sale. The writing is on the wall for media switching over to primarily, and, eventually, exclusively download delivery. So the new contracts need to reflect the "new" revenue streams that are quickly replacing broadcast and syndication residuals. ("new" is in quotes because DVDs have been a striving format for a solid decade)
a helpful video
a funner video with the writers of "The Office"

memphish said...

Yeah Andrew, the real reason is internet and other "new media" distribution, but the reason they are fighting so hard is that got screwed on DVDs last time around.

And the reason the producers are fighting so hard is that the actors and directors are going to want the same type of "new media" deals. But what I don't get is why the producers don't see that this is indeed the writing on the wall and come up with a percentage. If there's no profits, 1% of nothing is nothing. I guess the real fear is that this is indeed a giant money center and they don't want to give too much. Heaven forbid we overpay anyone but executives in the entertainment industry.

Back to Quarterlife. I don't know if I'll watch, but I might. I watched 30 something before I was a 30 something. I didn't watch My So-Called Life, so I guess as a (cough) 40 something I could try to relive my mid-20s by watching. Who knows. It's just 8 minutes of suck if it sucks. I've been watching Heroes this season, so I know I've got the stomach for at least 8 minutes of suck.

Stephanie said...

I heart 30 Rock. Last season I thought the show was a little, um, wobbly(?). But I get it now.

PalmerEldritch said...

What was so great about 30 Rock mocking the green week thing is that they actually had a network head talking about exploiting green consciousness for tv ratings. lol. And on Earl they even parodied the meeting where the network told the show that they had to force something green into the show even if it didn't fit with what they had planned. Love it.

Steph, 30 Rock slowly got better during the first season. At the beginning I wasn't too thrilled, but by the end I loved it. There was obvious slight retooling as they figured out how to best do their show. The main thing I noticed was that they began to focus more on Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin. Which I think was a smart move. Both are outstanding. And if the show has a weekness IMO, it's a bit lackluster supporting cast. Tracey Morgan and the goofy page guy can be funny, but the rest usually aren't that great.
