"Further Instructions" - Episode Discussion
Well episode 3x03 looks like it is shaping up to be a good one. Hopefully the producers have decided to have the makeup fx guys put a scar on Locke to show where his kidney operation was, otherwise theorists are gonna have a field day with it.
i hope that we dont see how locke loses his legs. i sort of want this one to stay a mystey forever. cause when i finally found out what kate did, i was dissapointed.
i will have more fun imagining why locke lost the use of his legs rather than seeing it. cause i know it wont be as badass as them being crushed by those blast doors in Lockdown.
Oh i remember. I listened to the Official podcast and there was a question about Charlie and Clair together forever and hoping they would get a better story line this year. And one of the Goons said that there would be a love triangle involving Clair and Charlie.
Can i be the first one to say PLEASE GOD NO FOR FUCKS SAKE. I don't need any more love triangles on this show. I don't need anymore Charlie on this show. Please kill him. Aimee hates Jake i hate Charlie.
Speeking of that we should all pick someone we hate and vote for them to die. Then when/if the person dies we cheer for the joy of the person who wished their death.
Sorry Ralph, I know I haven't been around the site much lately but I've been listening to all the podcasts. By the way, great job with The Dharmalars podcast.
If you listened to Jay and Jack's latest podcast, they had someone who interviewed Terry O'Quinn at a book signing or something and even he said it was a little disappointing when he found out how Locke lost the use of his legs
"I'm a huge fan [of Lost]," says the writer-director, who was slated to direct an episode last season before bowing out for personal reasons. "I really, really wanted to do it, and hope I still can.
yeah, but would it be a very special episode? would it have a totally different feel than any other episode of the series? the last thing i want is an episode that goes off on some tangent
If he directed it i don't think it would be very different. Maybe the episode would show his style but it would feel the same. Quentin Tarantino directed an Episode of ER when i was a huge fan of it and it felt the same way. I am pro new directors and anti love
I think you're missing the point here. Having a guest director for a tv show is a complete waste of time -- unless that director is a fan of the show. Which Aranofsky happens to be. It's the same reason why it would have been much more fun for someone like Stephen "The King" to have written Bad Twin, because he's a huge fan of the show.
By the way, we're at second commercial break now, and WOW best dream sequence EVER!
well i told the Tarantino story because he loved ER too. I think its positive if they are fans.
I have to say for the first time in awhile i wasn't excited by the preview. After the preview i tend to tear my hair out. But this one wasn't too mind blowing.
the episode was, whatever. it was a long drawn out way to undo all the bs that locke went through in season 2...i get it, he is the same as season 1 now.
The desmond shit was really cool. is it just me or did he look like Nell throwing those stones?
Something a little surreal about Des in the psychadelic shirt. All a ittle strange. A bit of overacting and over exposition in this one too. As Sayten and Ralph said...pandered to the audience.
So is Desmond going to become Muad'Dib and ride the smoke monster to the others camp? Or will his newfound power go the way of the New Sherrif?
Was anyone else hoping that the green house contained something more unexpected than weed? I mean as soon as I saw it I thought pothead-hippi-commune. I almost wish it was a bomb, or opiates or something Dharma-like. Maybe that's all they are doing on the island is hiding a giant valley of hashish, the good stuff.
Yea to seeing Hurley again. Boo to Charlie. He could die again and I'd be ok.
I was pretty bummed after watching this episode. What happened in the flashback? Did they just leave us hanging?
They never gave us any idea on how everybody survived the hatch implosion, and how come everybody was just waiting on the beach for someone to show up? A typical Lost episode where they had people not behaving in a rational manner and dragged out a story for an hour that should have lasted 20 minutes.
I think I'm a little harsh because we only get 6 episodes before a big hiatus. I hope the last 3 have a little more subtance.
I think the beach people did nothing because they are used to doing nothing. Jack, Kate, Sawyer, Locke...they all save the day without a peep from the rest of the castaways. When was the last time one of them spoke up? Season one?! and he got blown into tiny bits!!
i really liked the vision quest sequence. boone is my favorite character, and loved to see him back.
the problem with the episode is that i felt like they were taking the long raod to tell us that locke was going back to his island roots from season 1. i already knew that when terry o'quinn said "i was wrong". he is a good actor and when he said that, i understood that everything that he used to believe in was now restored. if he saved eko in the first 10 minutes and left the rest of the hour for more intriguing storyline, i would have been saticfied.
Just because you put Geronimo Jackson on a tshirt and a toy dumptruck in the cave, that you are getting more mystery. these two "easter eggs" felt like there were put in just for the sake of winking to the fans. as soon i saw both of those things, i thought to myself so what.
the back story did not seem to coincide with locke's island story, which is the best part about the flashbacks. There is always a scene in on the island that forces the characters to think about some memory that relates. The perfect example of this is the last few minutes of Everybody Hates Hugo. Hurley gets all this responsibility dumped in his lap with the food. He already knows why this is going to be a problem. The audience is then transported into hurleys flashback so that we can get in the same mind set as him.
last night's episode was horrible when it came to the flashback story. i dont know what having a new backstabber in Locke's life has anything to do with him getting control back on the island. I thought that the flashback should have had something to do with dealing with his faith in the past, but the only thing that it showed me is that john locke is easily bamboozled.
i just wish that the flashback showed the reason why john has finally decided to take his place as a leader on the island, instead of him just doing it cause desmond said he would.
it is a simple rule of LOST: flashbacks = character's drive
i will. i just dont want to piss people off by saying that i didnt like the episode. i hope that ben did like the episode, but i dont talk lost with him until we turn on the mics.
this will probably the "everybody hates hugo" of the Dharmalars.
3 more episodes to go for this "Pod" and I feel like we have had 1 good one, and 2 that have left us stalled. I just feel that momentum has been lost, a bit. Not giving up hope at all though...
i was hoping the whole time it would be the smoke monster instead of a 10 foot polar bear that runs away if you singe his nose. The preview last week made it seem like Smokey McEats the Pilot would be returning. Even when they found fur in the woods i was still hoping that smokey was behind it. I really want to friggen know what the crap that thing is.
The episode was decent. I don't know how i feel about dez's powers. I will have to see where they go with it.
I thought the flashback served as a reason why Locke likes being alone. he doesn't like people joining him because so many people have double crossed him. Before boone he would go out alone and come back. Then he ended up hurting Boone. So i thought the flashback was used to explain Letting charlie tag along with him.
BTW i really thought the bear would come up and kill charlie out of no where. that would have been sweet
It's MYOKOM w/SAS, Aimee-it's called Digital Attitude.
And face it, the episode, while in theory could have been a really good installment, just did not live up to par. We didn't find out that much out about Locke AT ALL, and typically, it's in his episodes when we find out the juicy stuff, and get new and important information.
But no, we just find out he's a hunter (duh), lived on a hippie community where they grew pot (yeah, I agree, totally obvious-esp when Eddie said 'are you guys going to blow something up?' No Eddie, no.), and he was heavily investigated by the police.
Not much. And Rodrigo's introduction was cheap-I got very annoyed, I wanted to see something like what you said on the All Star podcast-Claire was supposed to find them playing with Uncle Johnny, and I hate to admit it, but I was kinda looking forward to that ever since seeing it almost happen in Love, Actually.
Hopefully though, this episode was just a somewhat interesting way of introducing us again to the Losties again, to get them back on the show. What's sad though, is that until Sayid and co. get back from their really bad attempt at getting the Others, the show is going to be split three ways.
However, I did like it when Charlie made that LotR reference with how talkative the trees are.
aimee sorry to hear your week is shitty. I didn't enjoy that they introduced new people from the tail section. When i saw the dude from love aucually i was kinda pissed. So those two have been there the whole time and didn't want to speak up till now. and by speak up i mean say one thing. I know thats really the only way they can introduce new people but i would have rather had them others.
Lets all come together and admit its 100 times better then SOS
i disagree. at least the flashbacks of SOS has some semblance of what was going on during the island story.
i think that the two new characters fit in well with the rest of the randos. i am just glad they were introduced normally and not doing it in jacks tent like i heard they were going to. if they were caught in a tent doing it, it would probably be followed by claire saying "not you two again" as if we were to believe that they have been on the island this whole time. this was subtle, i have never seen that actor before, so i just thought that it was nice for them to give some of the randos some lines. i guess these two are a big deal?
i am gonna start recording in about an hour and a half. see you all on the flip side!
While the flashback did at least pertain to the island goings-on, I found S.O.S. the least interesting episode because Rose & Bernard are the least interesting and least featured "regulars", and have been ever since. It seemed like an irrelevant story to tell.
If they were going to do something like that (center an entire episode around a minor character), they might as well have done it to every random person encountered on the island. Scott/Steve-centric episode???
Hello. I read this blog all the time but have not felt the need to comment until now. Am I the only one who felt that the introduction of the new characters was the worst moment of the show so far? The first time that I actually jumped out of my chair and shouted "jumped the shark!" Some new as-of-yet silent Losties are suddenly going to become "actual characters" and get flashbacks and everything? On top of Benry Gale and all of the new Others? This is just plain nuts. This was the first indication to me that the show really could just totally change and be about a whole different group of people one day. Think about it. When Locke comes back to the camp, were you not looking about kind of thinking "where are all the people that I care about?". Then you realise it's one-dimensional Jack, Kate and Sawyer carrying out the role of being kidnapped this season on the other side of the island.
It worries me a great deal.
Having said all that, wasn't there a moment in s02e02 when Saywer or Michael, in the process of negotiating varous raft debris, did indeed jump a shark, albeit underwater. They swam above it I guess. Sorry, like I said I've read lots before but not posted, so now it's all pouring out.
Lastly, what the fuck was going on with Charlies awesometown Hoxton haircut? I know Claire and him got all touchy feely at the and of the last season, bt at what point did she get the scissors out along with a reference copy of Heat magazine? I don't think the show should stay as a 2004 period piece, repeatedly referencing Redsocks and George Bush, but if current trends are filtering onto the beach camp, how long before we have a hilarious nu-Sawyer/nu-Kate sublot involving a suspicion that there were indeed snakes on the plane that caused it to crash?
Another wonderful Lost cameo just made onto The Office tonight. Dwight is asking Ryan Howard a series a questions and one of them is "What is - The Dharma Initiative?"
"sorry aimee, but the episode was not good."??? What the hell is that???
Its fine you didn't like it, but to state that the episode was not good as some sort of undeniable fact??? It's holier-than-thou and it's condescending to the people that really enjoyed the episode. Not cool, man.
Tha't why the dharmalars suck and we should get the real Myokom w/SAS back, even if Dylan's been replaced.
wow. listen i have been posting on this blog for about a year now. i know everyone else here. they know me. we all have opinions about lost. i have had discussions about lost with aimee, mike, jimmy, tim, katie, obsidian and everyone else here. we know each other. we have known each other for a while. we know what each other likes and dislikes.
if i dont like an episode, i can let my friends know about it here. this is where i really discuss lost. i know that if i need to take out agressions here, that these folks that i concider close friends will not chastise me or my opinions.
so if you dont mind, maybe you should sign in or sign your name before you step on our turf and interupt our lost discussion with your hatred and disruptive behavior.
Anonymous - you do not insult people. We dissagree all the time on this blog but we have never resorted to Name calling, which is really middle school style, Please don't waste our time.
Some of us like it some of us don't. thats when it gets fun. We defend it. They rip it apart. instead of us all agreeing.
thats another thing. Who says that and doesn't say there name. It takes two seconds to set up blogger and you don't even have to update it. I only use blogger for this.
My name is Jansen, I'm from New Zealand and download the episodes as they air. I haven't set up an account because I can't be bothered doing so just so I can post here. I come on to scottandsteve.blogspot.com to see if Craig and Dylan (or Ryan) have a new podcast up and have been doing so since their inception. I'll occasionally pop into these discussions to see what other Myokom w/SAS listeners thought of the latest episode. Then I guess to have someone like Ralph - who's trying to take over one of the funniest, most original Lost podcasts put out there - try and impose his opinion that the "episode was not good" on everyone else just makes me a little mad.
I'm just a little surprised you're all so fine with having someone else make up your mind for you. As I said, I have no problems with people disliking the episode -- but they shouldn't go about saying no one else can. "Sorry Aimee. This episode was not good"
this episode was poorly written, plain and simple. i did not tell aimee that her opinion was not valid, i said the episode was poor in quality. lost has set a standard on what television couls be, and this episode was written like a bad b-movie.
once again, i was asked by Craig to be a part of the myokom network. i am not trying to take it over, in fact i had spent the whole summer trying to convince craig that i was going to go to my own feed. i am a fan of myokom and understand that we are not myokom. but he has continued to endorse us.
the first time i ever heard that ben and i were gonna continue putting out a podcast on this feed was when craig mentioned the myokom network on his podcast for the lost episode "?". i did not ask him if i could continue the dharmalars, he asked me.
I'm going to have to disagree with most of you. I actually LIKED this episode...yes! I think there's too much "expectation" that every episode is going to be the best episode EVER.
Did this ep advance the story line? Yes.
Was there more action? Yes.
Funny one-liners? Yes.
Did it leave you asking more questions? Yes.
Was next week's preview mind blowing? Well, no...but we're talking about this episode, right? ;)
i am really glad that my opinion caused such a ruckus. i did not know that i was taken so seriously. i am a 29 year old nerd from southern california. please do not take me seriously.
I just read what I wrote, and can see that it may have been rude. Especially since I wasn't intending it to be rude, but it just, as with a lot of things I tend to say, came out that way.
Sorry. Especially sorry if you took offense, because in no way should you ever be insulted, as you are practially the life and breath of this blog and the podcast. So I really hope you can accept my apology, and know that sometimes-ok, most of the time-I don't think to reread my posts, and whenever I type, for some reason I feel like people can hear my tone of voice.
Annoying, but still, forgive a lowly minion of MYOKOM w/SAS?
Lowly minion? Welcome to the club! I'm the same as you or anyone else here, so don't put yourself beneath anyone, especially me. I'm a nerd just like everyone else that hangs around this hole. Except for anonymous posters. Those people stink.
I appreciate the apology though, I'll be honest, I was pretty pissed off by it! But I can totally understand how someone's text cannot convey their actual expression or tone. Totally forgiven, don't even worry about it.

Looking forward to this one...thank God for tivo, I'm going to be working late tonight as it is!
Oh Yeah....FIRST!
Finally we find out how they're going to explain Locke, Eko and Desmond surviving the explosion. It better be good.
Oh Yeah....SECOND!
HOLY SHIT, obsidianrock is back!

So what do we think of the "Heroes" power?

No. Did not like this episode. Only the Boone and Naked!Desmond parts did I enjoy.
The rest of it? Kinda a bummer.

Wow, Gillian, I had no idea. Thanks for pointing that out.
There were elements to this episode that I really liked, so I felt the need to defend them, only I haven't had the time today to really get into it.
However, there were other things that happened in it that just flat out pissed me off, like everyone else.
I'm having such a fucking life this week.

listen i have been posting on this blog for about a year now. i know everyone else here. they know me. we all have opinions about lost. i have had discussions about lost with aimee, mike, jimmy, tim, katie, obsidian and everyone else here. we know each other. we have known each other for a while. we know what each other likes and dislikes.
if i dont like an episode, i can let my friends know about it here. this is where i really discuss lost. i know that if i need to take out agressions here, that these folks that i concider close friends will not chastise me or my opinions.
so if you dont mind, maybe you should sign in or sign your name before you step on our turf and interupt our lost discussion with your hatred and disruptive behavior.
sayten is my friend too. and ben and craig, dylan, ryan and ryan a.
Wow...what the hell happened?
I'm going to have to disagree with most of you. I actually LIKED this episode...yes! I think there's too much "expectation" that every episode is going to be the best episode EVER.
Did this ep advance the story line? Yes.
Was there more action? Yes.
Funny one-liners? Yes.
Did it leave you asking more questions? Yes.
Was next week's preview mind blowing? Well, no...but we're talking about this episode, right? ;)
Honestly, y'all need to chill!
~Kim
PS> Ralph, you're amazing!
i am amazing?
i am really glad that my opinion caused such a ruckus. i did not know that i was taken so seriously. i am a 29 year old nerd from southern california. please do not take me seriously.
Dear Aimee,
I just read what I wrote, and can see that it may have been rude.
