Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa?

4 toed statue!!!
Sawyer!!!

Trevor McFur said...

For a second I thought that Horace had the world's biggest doobie in his mouth.

t-dot kim said...

:) You're not the only one, Trev

Trevor McFur said...

Oh my god, Jin speaks perfect English.

Who wants to bet that Sawyer and Juliet are shacked up?

t-dot kim said...

Hahaha, I love it. I knew he'd speak English. I'd love to see Juliet and Jim.

5 words to Faraday: Look out for Chris Hanson!

t-dot kim said...

...that should have read:

I'd love to see Juliet and Jim GET IT ON!

Wow, Richard Alpert is super hot

JoeSC said...

Trevor, I totally thought that we were gonna see Cheech Marin walk out of the woods when Horace looked like he was sparkin' an "Up In Smoke" doob.

JoeSC said...

Alpert looks like he's looking to be an extra in "Night At The Roxbury"... What's up with the purple shirt unbuttoned halfway down?

t-dot kim said...

It's YUMMY

t-dot kim said...

HAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHH! Sawyer just said Richard Alpert wore eyeliner, hilarious.

Trevor McFur said...

There were also some Magic Brownies on the table underneath the monitors in the opening scene.

Trevor McFur said...

HA! I knew it!!!

Trevor McFur said...

I like Juliet, and she looked super-happy.

That ain't gonna last.

t-dot kim said...

Kate looked TIRED. I hope James meant what he said...he's over her!

Trevor McFur said...

Please, this is Lost, and he just had a giant conversation where he said that sure, he's over her. Back to the quadrangle next week.

Stephanie said...

James isn't over Kate. He was just trying to make Horace feel better.
Awesome. Kate deserves this.

Trevor McFur said...

And to counteract the mooning over Alpert, Juliet looked great tonight. She looks good with straight hair.

Trevor McFur said...

You know what's gonna happen, Kate's not gonna get what she deserves ... Sawyer's gonna drop Juliet and it'll be Jack-Kate-Sawyer all over again.

Stephanie said...

Those Dharma hot irons are the shit.

JoeSC said...

LaFleu est l'homme! Sawyer is totally tappin' that ass and I couldn't be happier.

That mechanic outfit was hot! I don't blame him... I'd forget about Kate too if I had that to come home to every night!

And 3 years later Jin's English is much improved... it still sounds really wierd, though

t-dot kim said...

Juliet did look pretty great. I won't hate on her this week.

Mr. Bill said...

Our affiliate screwed some of us with a black screen through bout half the show. We could still hear some dialogue. Ratz!!

DenAss said...

Don't worry Mr. Bill. You didn't miss much.

andrew. said...

- i really liked that episode.

- too bad all of the sourpusses had to show up at the end. Maybe they can keep Hurley and send Kate & Jack back on the sub.

Morgan said...

Been awhile since I've been here. Gotta say, the statue was awesome! Monsieur LaFleur was lookin' good. And I really think Juliet and him make a nice couple. Kate's going to ruin everything!

Trevor McFur said...

It was a good episode, I liked it a lot better than Bentham. I wonder what the hell they're doing, you would think that they would be trying to get out of there since they know that the purge is coming.

I wonder when they run into Little Ben.

JoeSC said...

I don't know... Sawyer's a pretty smart guy... If he knows what's best for him, he'll stay the hell away from Kate...

My guess... Sawyer decides to stick with Juliet, but she goes running back to Jack. OUCH!

DenAss said...

Except another OUTSTANDING Sawyer episode! Got DAMN! That one I really liked.

But when in the hell are the other survivors of the flight 316 crash? 2007?

And I'm still curious who Charlotte's mom is.

And is Miles gonna turn out to be his own dad?

JonFromNKY said...

Best part: Sawyer calls Alpert "eyeliner"

2nd best part: Seeing a glimpse of the 4 toed statue

Morgan said...

Oh, and why are they just showing a reapeat next week? I thought wew weren't supposed to get them anymore?

memphish said...

I enjoyed the episode except for Sawyer lying to Juliet about Kate and the look he gets when he sees her. When will these guys ever learn? Psychotic brunette or scheming, but generally reliable blonde who can fix a VW? Sheesh.

The 4-toed statue and the eyeliner were hilarious.

The only real question I have is why does Horace have a different wife than Olivia who was present at Ben's birth? Or has that not happened yet? And have we seen any 30 year olds that could be Horace and Amy's baby boy?

That little girl Charlotte was as unattractive as the grown up one. Good casting.

Holli

DenAss said...

Holli, that was cold.

My guess is that Amy's baby grows up to be one of the others ... after the purge. He must be someone that Ben befriends at the DI before he kills them all.

JoeSC said...

Oh yeah, WTF? I figured they would end up showing the 4-toed statue at some point, but for like 3 seconds? If we're stuck in 1974 for good, we may never see it again. I think there's a reason they didn't show it's front, though... It's gotta make another appearance...

JoeSC said...

And I agree... Sawyer's "eyeliner" comment was the line of the night... Awesome!

PalmerEldritch said...

morgan!!!!

welcome back. been too long.

yeah, kate is gunna ruin everything. like my enjoyment of the show. i was really hoping we wouldn't have to deal with... JAKATWYIET!!!!

ugh.

oh. amy is my new favorite LOST character. and that's not Horace's baby. it's Soulpatch Tony's!

Trevor McFur said...

Charlotte is younger than Ben, so Ben has to be there somewhere, and Olivia must be before this episode. Maybe also killed by the Others?

You would think that Baby Miles should be around somewhere too. Unless he's gone already.

I thought that the statue looked like an Egyptian god.

DenAss said...

Ladies - M/B/K

Horace
Miles
Daniel Faraday

DenAss said...

Remember, Ben didn't arrive until he was a bit older. Maybe 9 or 10?

JonFromNKY said...

How old is charlotte supposed to be? In her mid to late 30s? not likely

JoeSC said...

Yeah, the casting of Amy was a really nice surprise for us "24" fans!

Trevor McFur said...

Holy crap, Michelle Dessler!

DenAss said...

Well, if you do the math, that's about how it adds up. toddler in 1974 = 30s in 2004.

Trevor McFur said...

But Ben's gotta be at least 10 years older than Charlotte (probably 20 years in real life). So we saw Charlotte around the age of 7 or 8, so Ben should be a snotty 18 year old somewhere.

Trevor McFur said...

Was she that young tonight?

memphish said...

Too much math.

Marry Daniel
Bang Miles
Kill Horace, especially this extra fat, extra long haired version.

BTW, I hate Sawyer's 70s hair. I hope Kate cuts it.

Holli

PalmerEldritch said...

Horace's wife must've died. Maybe Alpy and the funky bunch offed her.

either that or he pulled an Edgar Allen Poe and he built her into walls of that log cabin. Mrs. Goodspeed(I) is Jacob.

i like that Paul had an ankh. ties into the whole Egyptian thing. you know, the heiroglyphics and the GIANT EIGHT TOED STATUE OF AN EGYPYTIAN GOD.

wish we'd seen what animal head it had though. interestingly, doesn't Isis stitch Osiris back up after Set kills him so she can get knocked up by him and give birth to Horus? resurrection/pregnancy/daddy issues! :p

DenAss said...

Is it just me, or did La Fleur's hair look a bit darker than Sawyer's?

And did Mile's hair look grayer than before? Maybe he ages in reverse, and since they're going back in time he looks older.

Morgan said...

Thanks Palmer! Yeah, been gone a year. Moved cross country from CA to MA. I promise, no MB-confusion-posts.

Trevor McFur said...

I think that the statue is this guy.

DenAss said...

uh ... there's 5 toes on your other statue.

JoeSC said...

Yeah, this is the first time I've noticed Miles has really gray hair... don't know why...

Oh, and Horace needs to stay away from the special brownies... He's starting to look like Humpty Dumpty in that DHARMA jumpsuit!

Morgan said...

How come Juliet is a mechanic? Where did that come from? She could have done some other medical duties or something?

JoeSC said...

I don't care how it happened, I'm just glad it happened. She's easily been my favorite female character since Season 3!

t-dot kim said...

Holli, I agree---Sawyer looked strange with his flat ironed hair. He needs to look dirtier.

I thought Amy was going to give birth to Charlotte--but that was proved wrong.

I was hoping to see more at the end of the episode. I was upset that it ended so abruptly.

JoeSC said...

Yeah, it really felt like there should have been another scene, or at least a couple more lines... something about it didn't feel like the episode was actually finished...

Trevor McFur said...
This comment has been removed by the author.
Morgan said...

I agree Joe, I know Kim hates her, but they haven't added any female characters that are interesting or likable since Juliet. Oh, except Isabel and Achara (sausage-girl)...

Trevor McFur said...

"I was upset that it ended so abruptly."

twss

And I still think that's who the statue is supposed to be, number of toes excluded.

PalmerEldritch said...

she actually just dresses up like Rosie the Riveter and then sniffs gas fumes all day at the repair shop.

morgan, how do you like winter in New England? pretty f'n terrible, eh?

trying to remember all those specials on the History Channel... the Pharaoh is Horus in life, then dies and becomes Osiris in death? and Christian and Locke died and came to the Island... ;)

anyhow, i think that statue is either wearing a random hat or a Blue Crown of Egypt (http://www.ancientegypt.co.uk/pharaoh/explore/bluec_b1.html). but it's not the usual Pharaonic get-up.

also, i think the statue was a "ok, here's the statue. stop asking about the statue now." thing instead of anything all that useful to us. just a hint that "this shit is old!!! and mysterious."

t-dot kim said...

:) I can honestly say, I used to HATE Juliet, but I've done a complete 180. I enjoy her 1000x more than when she was first introduced

DenAss said...

Hey Jon - LOVED your last rant on TLI, but I gotta call you out on one thing. You're not sure if you'd do Illiana?

Are you serious!? That bitch is hot!

t-dot kim said...

I think we'll see the statue's feet in the next couple of episodes

JoeSC said...

I don't think Isabele was a female... waaaay too butch! Plus, they called her the Sheriff. That just smacks of the "I'm-Really-A-Dude" vibe...

Achara... I don't even want to touch that (literally)... I just hope her and her freaky nipples never pass through an episode of LOST again!

JonFromNKY said...

DenAss

That was Kyle,,, not me.. I'm not nearly that hostile toward others.. even though it was funny

Trevor McFur said...

Better screencap of the statue from darkufo.

Morgan said...

New England winter... This is my second one actually. Last year wasn't bad at all, but this year has been long. Much colder than last year. I lived most of my life not far from where Ralph & Ben live (sun, dry-heat, etc.) and it's a huge adjustment.

JonFromNKY said...

Not to mention the fact that I don't have a cool accent

JoeSC said...

Kim -- Glad you've finally seen the light with Juliette! I think she's the only female character on the show that never completely annoyed me at one point or another... Maybe Libby, but that's it!

Trevor McFur said...

kablamo!

(been a while)

DenAss said...

WHOOPS! sorry Jon. I just saw the KY at the end of your name and made a bad assumption.

Sorry to both of you for getting mixed up.

I'd still do Illiana though.

JoeSC said...

Oh yeah, did anyone else think that Daniel crying in the beginning was really fucking awkward... Jeremy Davies is a great actor, but he can't cry for shit!

Stephanie said...

Why did the Others want Paul's corpse?

JoeSC said...

I think because Alpert had to show them that they killed one of the DHARMA guys as retribution... I guess The Hostiles had quite the bloodlust!

DenAss said...

Stephanie - You should pose that question to Cuseloff so they can do another one of their hilarious Zombie season jokes.

JoeSC said...

If you have to defend LOST to him, then he's not you friend... Just let 'em go!

JonFromNKY said...

no problem..

PalmerEldritch said...

damn. yeah, that does look your forebear, Anubis McFur.

could be Horus the bird headed dude. but did he carry around an ankh too?

Stephanie said...

Damon and Carlton's "jokes" are getting stale.

Trevor McFur said...

Could be Horus, but I think that those are dog ears coming out the top.

Morgan said...

Palmer, I love your thumbnail. I think just blue myself...

scrdmnkydst said...

episodes like this make it worthwhile staying up til 4 in the morning.

YAY sawyer episode... it's been way too long since we've had one of these.

...Jin's accent is still funky. I wanted him to have a proper americanised accent so he'd freak Sun out when they finally saw each other.

PalmerEldritch said...

when we see Sun again, is she gunna be all creepy and evil like O6 Sun has been? gunna mention that she has a kid?

andrew. said...

- i can only assume that Rose & Bernard are Others now. eat it Handsome Jack!

PalmerEldritch said...

when does Ben kill his dad? '85? then he's a little kid who runs away from Dharma... when? and why was Dr. Eyeliner dressed like a hippy/pirate to talk to baby Ben but dressed in a freshly ironed button up shirt in 1954 and 1974?

scrdmnkydst said...

If I remember rightly... The purge was in 1992?

PalmerEldritch said...

i'll have to check lostpedia instead of paying attention at work tomorrow. :)

oh. trevor. supposedly, anubis only has four toes on his hind legs. in dog form... but maybe human with a dog head form too!

Alirio said...

Hey peeps!

Now we know Julliet probably IS the woman in the painting in Ben's house.

Were Sawyer and Jin talking about looking for Ben in the 3rd or 4th grade? I could have miss-heard that.

We didn't see Daniel in 1977 so this must mean he took the sub off the island to go see the premier of STAR WARS!

mb said...

GOOD EPISODE!

- no more flashes
- Saywer and Juliet shack up
- Jin's hooked on phonics
- the 4 toed statue is a human-animal hybrid?
- Sawyer spins Alpert's head (I loved that scene)
- the Others value dead bodies apparently
- 13 years ain't long enough methinks

MORGAN - welcome back!

Nice Egyptian history/mythology info Palmer - sweet. and I thought I liked History Channel :)

mb said...

oops - I meant 3 years (not 13)

Jordan said...

Lost is fun when it's good.

It totally makes sense from a storytelling standpoint that the island 815ers would experience 3 years just as the O6ers did. Would've been odd to reunite a group that had grown 3 years away from the island times with one who had been running around in the jungle for a couple days. Now everyone is on equal footing and has had some time and experiences to cause their characters to have similar reactions and thinking.

I'm guessing this is all we're ever going to see of Sawyer and company's 3 years with the Dharma Initiative. And it will probably be enough given the story they are trying to tell. But this is definitely a case of a situation where I wish we had more episodes left than is planned. It would be neat to get to see a bit more of the things that happened to them during their 3 years. We got to see a ton that happened to the O6ers during their 3 years.

First point of my points of ramble-ation. FUCK KATE. I hate Kate. So much. Hate hate hate hate her. I'm with Andrew. Send her and whiny Jack back ASAP. I've stated before that I used to be a Skater. But that was before Kate became a total biatch. She doesn't deserve Sawyer. AT ALL. Sawyer has been a good guy the entire time in his dealings with Kate. Jack has been a bitch. And Kate has been an even bigger bitch. Jack and Kate deserve each other.

I said a while back that Kate was a bitch for playing Jack and Sawyer the way she has and flip flopping back and forth depending on her time of the month. I said that what I wanted to see, would be for her to get back to the island and realize that really wanted Sawyer and that she should have never left the island. Only to return and find Sawyer and Juliet together. Wow. That is looking like it might be exactly what happens. Only I had Sawyer and Jules together for a couple months, not 3 years. I really really don't want Kate to fuck this shit up. But of course, we all know that's exactly what will happen. Somebody pointed out that Juliet was too happy for it too last. Seeing as how Juliet has become one of my favorite characters on the show, I really really am going to be pissed if she's brushed aside for round 20 of Sawyer and Jack fight over Kate. Especially with Kate being such a bitch.

But back to Juliet and my saying that she's one of my fave characters on the show. IN YOUR FACE HATERS. lol. You see. I have this, uh, character flaw. I'm often right. It's also the reason I don't keep girlfriends for too long. :P Seeing how I'm usually right all the time, I really try my hardest to not say, "told ya so". But when it comes to Juliet, I TOLD YOU SO. Yeah, her character was purposely made to seem untrustworthy early on. But given her indoctrination into otherdom, who could blame her? And that's what I've been saying from the start. The amount of times people, mostly the ladies, have typed, "I just don't trust her" or "I just don't like her" could fill a bible. Yet time and again, she proves herself to be one of the more stand up members of the show. I think we are finally at the point where there is no longer any doubt. Actually, we've been there for some time IMO. But now it's more than obvious. TDot finally seeing the light says it all. ;) I just felt the need to state my case seeing as I have now taken a very extreme "FUCK KATE" stance. Team Juliet all the way. I just wish it didn't feel like I was rooting for the obvious loser. My only hope is that the writers intend for Jack and Kate to end up together.

I wasn't going to say anything in fear of coming off like a jack ass. But Holli already said it. PERFECT casting for young Charlotte. ;)

In a show famous for bad wigs, Horace's takes the cake. Dude looks like he's got a weave of 10 birds nests on his head. Also, his hair is longer than it was in the ep where he greeted Ben and his father to the island. Not that length of hair is a scientific method for figuring out timelines. But in a show such as this, could that be something the writers are using as a hint that this is after Ben's arrival? Somebody who pays closer attention to details and who likes math can prob answer the question based on Ben's age and other past info. But such things scare me at 11:30 pm.

I think Palmer is right about the four-toed statue. Or at least, I hope he's right. That it was a "There you go. Now give it a rest!" from the producers. As I've said before. I'm not so sure it ever had anything behind it more than, "hey, creepy statue foot. Weird, huh?" Either way, with answer-crazed Lost fans, this surely will not suffice. It will only make them want more. Sigh.

And if you are one of the ones who desperately wants to know the history behind the statue. Here's my challenge to you. So there once was a statue on the island. Alright, fair enough. Well we already know that there are people who are indigenous to island, right? So they've probably been around for a good while. Prob long enough to have built that statue a long, long, long time ago. Just the same as happened with ancient civilizations in countries all over the world. And many of which, built statues that didn't exactly reflect the physical characteristics of man. So was there a crazy mystery behind all those civilizations as well? Or is it perfectly normal for them to build strange sculptures about things modern day man knows very little about? If you agree with my line of thinking here, than you should be able to see that wanting to know about the statue is basically saying, "Hey Lost writers. Tell us the history of everybody who has ever stepped foot on the island ever. I really want to see the episode where an ancient tribe of island dwelling people build a statue of their sun god". My point is, just because something existed on the island at some point in history, doesn't mean it's integral to the story of the 815ers, the others, Dharma, etc. AKA the story of the show that we watch. Sorry to get off on a tangent yet again. But I really don't think they ever meant anything besides, "whoa, that's weird". But who knows. Maybe I'm TOTALLY wrong. And the final episode of the series is going to be "THE HISTORY OF THE STATUE". Maybe the statue is Jacob. Or Aaron. Or Rose!

Steph, You asked why Alpert wanted Paul's body. Maybe there is a deeper, more complicated reasoning behind it. But when it happened, I took it to mean that Alpert needed the body to show his fellow people why their men were killed and it didn't break the truce. But maybe it's something more exciting. Maybe they are going to reprogram him as one of the final 5 cylons. Whoops. Wrong show.

Who was/is Michelle Dessler's baby? Nobody obvious jumps to mind. It's not Charlotte. And I'm pretty sure it's not Miles. Anybody else who we suspect to have been born on the island and who would fit age-wise? I'm stumped.

Where is Sun and Sayid? I really hope Sun isn't the woman off with Frank in the present as so many suspect. It wouldn't make any sense for her to not flash with the other O6ers.

Gotta love the writers making up pointless story points for the specific purpose of fooling the audience. Much as Locke's Jeramy Bentham alias was only to hide his identity to the fans. Same for Sawyer, or should I say, Jim LaFleur. So they had him make up a fake name to Horace for no benefit to himself at all, all so the audience could go, "Oooh. I wonder who this LaFleur guy these two random Dharma guys have been talking about is? WHO IS BEHIND THAT DOOR?!" It's not worth complaining about, cuz really who cares. But it sure seems like a long way to go for a very short and simple, "ah ha!" Just seems they are going for more and more of these little pointless "ah ha's" than in the past. And if they did, at least they didn't seem so obvious and transparent.

Loved Sawyer calling Alpert "Eyeliner guy". And nice shirt Richard!

So yeah, good stuff. This episode just goes to show that we don't know jack about what is to happen between now and the end of the series. Somebody said on here last week that there isn't much left to happen besides some resolution between Ben and Widmore. Given the amount of ep's left, that seems very far from the case. And given the out of left-field nature of this ep. I find myself eagerly anticipating what is yet to come.

I assumed that Alpert wanted Paul's body so that the rest of his people could see that it wasn't just a one sided attack and that both sides had casualties.

Also, JFC, could you have ranted anymore, Jordan?

/always liked Juliet.

Jordan said...

Yes.

One thing I forgot to mention. Sawyer and Juliet sure are handy with those rifles. One shot kills for each of them.

Alan Sepinwall summed up JAKATWYIET perfectly:

"Though I like Sawyer with Kate (especially if the alternative is Jack with Kate), Sawyer and Juliet fit so well together that it was almost disappointing to see him set eyes on Freckles again at the end."

Well not perfectly, I guess. It wasn't "almost" disappointing. It WAS disappointing. If the rest of the series is watch Kate and Sawyer fall back in love, I might be sick.

Jordan said...

Did anybody notice Herc from FNL in the opening scene with the arguing Dharma guys? Palmer, you'd know him as the analyst guy from your beloved Bionic Woman. Hope he gets more screen time, as he was great on FNL.

Stephanie said...

Yeah, Wheelchair guy from FNL with Jimmy Barrett from Mad Men.

I know who Amy's son is and I wish I didn't.

memphish said...

Nice post Jordan. Glad I'm not alone on recognizing the brilliance of the young Charlotte casting.

I recognized Herc and Jimmy Barrett too. Herc and his lady are class A crap dancers. Elaine Benes worthy. It's hilarious how everyone keeps referring to Michelle. They should have just named her that to save us all the trouble.

This episode reminded me of Tricia Tanaka. It filled in a lot more blanks than TT, but I like how I felt good after watching both episodes. We've been running at such a furious pace, really since the end of S3, that this episode was a welcome break. Even more welcome than the actual break we'll get next week.

memphish said...

Did anyone mention that LaFleur was the New Sheriff in Town?

Holli

memphish said...

Oh and for the record my Juliet hating days are over too. Just a testament to the writers for making her so untrustworthy in the beginning. It's Elizabeth Mitchell's eyes and slack expression. It's reptilian. The contrast between Juilet having Sawyer's back and actually having it to Kate's back-having of Jack continues to prove why Kate will probably be the most disliked of the original characters on the show.

Chris JC said...

Yo!

LOST isn't very good at decent female characters and so, right from the start, Juliet has been my favourite (and if people think I'm suddenly jumping a bandwagon, feel free to find a post on this blog where I contradict that stance).

I didn't think I cared about the 'shipping, but I was happy with that. And happy for more Elizabeth Mitchell bare back action (turns out I like backs. Who knew?)

My favourite thing about the statue was how shit it looked.

I think the thud should have been followed by the word "ROMANCE".

heheheheheheeheh. awesome!

us guys knew that Juliet was a good character ever since the "Rumble in the Jungle."

i'm hoping that the Dharma Initiative will have an all female Roller Derby league.

memphish said...

Juliet definitely wins in the sexy back category.

She's bringing sexy backs back.

Rrb said...

My only problem is that I liked the creepy Juliet she was kind Ben-esc. But I'm really glad they still keep her a bit of a mystery. We know nothing about her time with the others, or what she knows about Richard, other then "he's always been here".
I was getting nervouse she was going to fade into the background.
I think Sawyer did not tell her about the trio arrival (2 of which got one way sub tickets from me) because he was more worried about Juliet forgeting about Him for Jack. Instead of him ditching her for kate.
Sorry guys I think they had a body double in the back scene..did we see aface?:)

Chris JC said...

We didn't need a face - that was definitely The Mitchell Back.

and why the hell is she a VW bus repair women? "hey I'm insert fake name, I was the wicked hot Mechanic on the salvage ship" You would'nt happen to have an exhaust pipe I could work on? TWSS

Juliet's DHARMA APPLICATION.

Job wanted: Security

Experience: Knocked Jack out in hip deep water, kicked Kate's ass in the mud, bounced a red head with an attitude out of the Tsunami station,O'ya I shot this dude I was sorta friends with 4 times in the chest, and I shot a indigenous person in the heart from a hundred yards in the bushes yesterday.

DHARMA would like to thank you for the interest you have in joining our very special research.
And have an opening for you imeadietly...in the motor pool.

I bet they paint her picture on th eA jira sports plane. with little cadbury eggs 4 all her kills.

t-dot kim said...

I won't say that I completely trust Juliet--I just don't HATE her with a passion like I did during Season 3. She's graded on a curve. Compared to the rest--she's the best of what's left. Comparing and contrasting her to Kate...hands down: Juliet.

I feel she's still hiding something (protecting herself) from the people she works with. Be it "The Others" or the "815ers". Sadly, that's just what her life has conditioned her to be like. She got fucked over by her first husband, fucked over by Ben...twice, and she not having it anymore.

To me, she plays both sides. (twss?) She's on the team that best suits her at the moment. Hey, more power to her. I'd probably do the same thing. I have a bad feeling she's going to end up alone at the end of all of this because she's a "floater". I don't, nor will I ever, think that she will take any action. She'll just float on until she can get the hell out of dodge. "Thanks for helping me get of the island...have a nice life. Peace out!"

t-dot kim said...

I think it's the botox. You can't read her poker face.

NO EMOTION!

Rrb said...

but they got it in the write places..Fake or not she's darn cute.

also that "brownies" scene was the WORSE scene ever shot and acted in the 5 seasons of LOST.

The acting was stupid, the writing was bad, it was shot like a piece of shit and was not dramatic what so ever.

they danced stupidly, their haircuts were retarded looking and that music was totally not-straight.

You guys are mean. :(

has nobody made fun of sawyer's horrible face-wig yet?

wtf?! he starts off having real stubble in the beginning. then he has this bizarre face-wig for the "three years ago" scenes, is clean shaven in 1977, and has a little stubble during the "meet up with daniel" scene.

and dont get me started on his merkin!

wait... what?

Rrb said...

The brownie scene didn't do much for me...even thou i like brownies?

Chris JC said...

I think Sawyer's beard action was the same thing you'll have seen in The Constant:

Holloway shoots "Three Year Earlier" scenes with genuine beard.

Later, in preparation for the LaFleur scenes he shaves and and the shavings are kept.

Then, after this, if any pickups are required for the Three Years Earlier scenes then they glue his own beard hair back onto his face for those scenes.

Even better this way because now he will be clean shaven for a while where as Cusick presumably had to grow another beard fast for later episodes or wear the gluey whiskers a few more times while it was growing in.

Peace out!"

TOTALLY DISAGREE.

You're a stubborn one, Eh there Canada?

Where do you get this from? Juliet hasn't been the way you are discribing her for some time now. She is pretty damn loyal to her group. If the hostiles or some other random group approached her and offered her a better chance at getting off the island, she would not suddenly "switch sides". She wouldn't have 3 years ago, and she sure as heck won't after 3 years with Sawyer. Yeah, she was ready to get off the island when offered the submarine. But seriously, so would most people. But the moment Sawyer finally told her that he like liked her, she was all, "What submarine?" If she was so scheming and still ready to do anything to get away, she says no to Sawyer. Pretty simple. She is a strong female character in that she doesn't fit into a lot of general damsel in destress stereotypes. IE her being handy with a gun and knowing how to fix a VW bus. But I don't see why her being strong is a reason to be turned off by her. It's no different than how bad ass jungle Kate has been from day one. Now could Juliet end up wanting to leave after being crushed by Kate making the moves on her man and him falling for it? Sure. But that is nothing specific about her character being untrustworthy. Guess some people see things the way they want to. Grudges are hard to let go of after all. :P

Sawyer and Juliet are just flat out right for each other right now. When you analyze their character's archs on the show, both started out kinda sketchy, only to over time prove themselves. Sawyer has grown from a snarky con-man to a heroic leader. Juliet has grown from a duplicitous, trust nobody, looking out for herself character to one who has learned to trust and become part of the group. And both have been played by Jack and Kate when Jate-Ass needed a lil' something something to fill the void. Sawyer and Juliet are the anti-Jack and Kate. I just really hope the writers can see this. Because it seems quite obvious that most of the fans are beginning to. Would be really a shame to watch the nice couple get crushed, just so Jate-Ass can manipulate and get their way.

Jack and Kate are just jerks. When comparing them with Sawyer and Juliet, Jate-Ass comes off as the bitchy cool kids in school. Jack is the snobby, "I'm better than you" rich kid, and Kate is the bitchy prettiest girl in school. Both think their better than anyone else and can have whoever they feel like that day. Yeah, the bitchy pretty girl might feel like dating the bad boy for a bit. But once she realizes he isn't as rich and popular, she dumps him like a bad habit and is back with mr. popular. And mr. popular, he might make out with the not as hot science club girl behind the bleechers, but the next day at school, he's going to pretend nothing ever happened and brush her off when she says hi in the hallway. Screw mr. and mrs. popular. I'm hoping the bad guy from the wrong side of the tracks and the not as hot science club girl are able to say, "we're too good for THEM".

I agree that the 4-toed statue will probably only ever be referenced and not EXPLAINED in detail, but come on, it is clearly a pointer to another era in island history which we will probably hear more about before the end. And I think THAT is what people are reasonably expecting. Who the fuck cares how the actual statue got built.

But frankly, the first half of this season has made me realize that it doesn't really matter in the end. The important thing is that we get good story telling. Like you said Jordan "Lost is fun when it's good" and this episode was a really nice bit of storytelling - balancing character development with island-story-arc and history.

Exactly. You gotta have balance. To me character development and storytelling is 80% of the equation. Sprinkle in the island history stuff along the way, and it's a perfect balance. To me, it's when the explaining things stuff takes the front seat is when Lost gets "bad" or should I say, not as good. Without good story and character development, you have Stranger in a Strange Land.

Still don't think the ancient island people need any more explaining than, "Hey, we existed way back then btw". But I guess we can just disagree on that one. Or better yet, wait to see how they ever end up factoring in to the overall narrative of the show. If we get an ep or two that focuses on Alpert's people, awesome. In that context, it wouldn't hurt. But to go to it simply for the statue itself would be a mistake IMO. To me, an awesome way to handle it would be in an episode about Alpert (which I wonder if we'll ever get), one of the losties is over at his place. Say this temple or whatever. And while Alpert is giving a very breif explanation of how they've been on the island for centuries, we walk past some old hieroglyphics and see a drawing of the statue or something. Something simple and within the natural narrative of the show. Anything more, for something that I think might have been a throwaway by the writers, would be a waste IMHO.

And Palmer, yes. That was quite the Jack beard that Sawyer had. Why is this show so bad when it comes to fake hair?

Jordan said...

Yeah those Kimmel things are good. Emerson and DDK have been in them too.

The thing I think that has been so good about Sawyer and Juliet is that they have grown as people and acted logically and in a way that demonstrates a willingness to try new ideas. Of course Sawyer has also become the Island big brother whether you're Hurley, Claire or even Bonsai. Jack on the other hand, ever since his return from the Hydra in S3 has refused to listen to anything anyone had to say and listens only to himself. And Kate acts like it's always Opposite Day. Evangeline Lilly said as much to Jimmy Kimmel when he asked her about getting it on to get over Aaron.

It was ME JC. I said there isn't much story left. And I stand by it.

I LOVED last night's episode, but it was a filler episode.

With the exception of the scene between James and Richard there was nothing that really needed to be seen.

The episode could've just started from when the 06 got there and Sawyer tells them that they've been part of the Dharma Initiative for the past 3 years.

What did we really see last night?
1. James and Jules are together (can be conveyed in 2 seconds)
2. Islanders joined with Dharma. (we basically figured that when we saw Jin)

Main questions that remain:
1. How fake is it that they don't kill Ben now?
2. Will the 815ers and co. (Jules, Miles, Dan) die in the purge?
3. Are you fucking with us or are we to expect more re the island's mythology? (statute scene)
4. Is James really over Kate?
5. How will 316ers be integrated?
6. With the flashes now done, will the 815ers and co. have to live out their lives in this time?
7. What will happen with John Locke?
8. When will the war take place?
9. What does the story hold for the off island characters? (Desmond, the kids (Walt, Charlie, Ji Yun, and Aaron), CW?
10. How did Hawkins know that guy in the red Chucks was going to die?

Chris JC said...

"It was ME JC"

Er, eh?

Anyway - Jay & Jack were super classy on the end of their show, and I reckon that's probably all that any podcaster needs to say on the subject, although Kyle might get cheesed that they kept calling him Scott.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the baby being born. I guess that's kind of important too, but is it really? Aren't all babies born? Did we really need to see the baby being born?

So we may have also seen the birth of Jacob. Horace building the cabin in Locke's vision does support this idea, but the image of Jacob seems too old to be that baby.

- hefting that front around is why she's got such a sexy back (and why she's got slouched shoulders (awww, Juliet & Sawyer have that in common too :)))

What's the deal with Juliet always looking her best around that submarine?

- i hope the baby is Frank Lapidus, and he plays with a little toy airplane, and sends it to his good buddy, Danny in Iowa. mostly kidding.

- Speaking of the submarine, it seemed to be able to come and go from the "always moving" island frequently, if not freely.

- i was a little disappointed by how slipshod Dharma seemed to be. Should we guess that the utopian science community that the DeGroots had set up was already falling by the wayside because of the risk of attack by the hostiles?

- i like LOST!

James said...

Ralph beat me to it! I was going to mention that the opening sequence (the brownie scene) wasn't just bad...it was the singularly worst piece of LOST I have ever seen. I have seen middle school plays acted better...and the dancing? WTF????

Secondly...add to it all the "Oh my God, what if LaFleur finds out".."He'll kill us", "You knock."...""No you knock"..."shit we are going to die if he does/doesn't find out".

And then it's Sawyer just "Son of a bitching". Seriously, what was he going to do besides insulting someone with a new nickname...very poor.

I hope no one minds too much when I say that it always amazes me on this blog how passionate people get about Kate banging the two guys. The scorn, the trashing...honestly, is there no one here that has ever been in either love or lust with two people and acted on it. Or alternatively just had meaningless sex once in a while. And I'll add that just because it's meaningless doesn't mean it can't be effing awesome and the right thing to do. This is America, right? Maybe it's the European in me!

I'll quickly add that I didn't explain myself too well in a previous post. I DO take podcasting seriously...but in the way that I figure that if I'm going to do a show, I'll put a lot of effort into it. Yes...we are amateurs, yes, it's all free, no I will not be quitting my day job in a hurry! But I do relate to fans being disappointed when the show is bad/unavailable or being too invested in the show, and I don't believe in trashing them by saying "Hey asshole, this is a free service" etc. If you have thousands of people listening to you, you will get pressure, criticism whatever. You have to deal with that, I feel. We (being me, Kim, Aimes, MB, Ralph et al) are really, really lucky to be involved in what I consider to be the higher quality podcasts...and with that higher quality and regularity our listeners are bound to be invested in the shows... whether we think it right or wrong or not. Does anyone understand me? I don't think I'm very good sat getting my points across at present, so will apologize in advance.

Here's a good point though.

Elizabeth Mitchell is a far, far better actress than Evangeline Lilly...and I think that plays a part in the empathy we are able to feel with her character!

mb said...

I don't know - I'd say this was a pretty important episode.

Think about it -
With almost all of our main characters back in Dharma Initiative era now, it is crucial that we have an episode that acquaints us with life in the DI. This episode did that, as well as:

- establishing a new romance (which, like Jordan, I'd like them to just leave be, but they won't) which I'm guessing is setting up the Jackatawiet stuff for the rest of the season
- establishing a new character (Amy) who narratively seems to be our Losties most personal connection with the DI, and served to bring them into the new storyline.
- flushing out the DI/Others hostility which we know is going to lead to major plot developments - and now, raising the question of how our Losties are going to factor into those events (i.e. the Purge)
- MAJORLY developed Sawyer as a character. We were all recently commenting (weren't we) that he could actually die since he hasn't had a life purpose since he killed Anthony Cooper. Well, now he's got a pretty big purpose narratively.

I could go on - but you get my point.

Certainly you COULD relay a lot of the information given in a more truncated way, but then our characters don't get developed which (as much as I love the mythology and backstory) is really what any drama is about.

Anyway, regardless of all my blabbing here, I agree with you - I loved this episode as well. I just like talking about Lost too much.

mb said...

"Elizabeth Mitchell is a far, far better actress than Evangeline Lilly"

Jimmy I think you hit the nail on the head as to why people (me included) get so pissed off at Kate. They wrote her character as the lynchpin of a romantic triangle which for a KICK-ASS actor is hard to portray in a totally sympathetic light. Kate/Lilly ends up engendering very little sympathy. I think she's a fine actress, I truly do like her, and she has her moments - but I think Mitchell just has more finesse as an actor.

She really would be a much better and more interesting character without Jate, Skate, or Jackatawiet in her narrative (not saying that that is a realistic possibility in prime time drama).

mb said...

just realized I called Lilly and "actress" and Mitchel and "actor" - they're all supposed to be called "actors" now right?

Jordan said...

Jimmy, I don't have a problem with Kate having sex with anybody. Truly meaningless sex is in no way offensive to me. (rim shot) The reason Kate bothers me is that she wasn't just having meaningless sex with Jack and Sawyer. She yanks them around emotionally. She gives them the puppy dog eyes and bats her eyelashes. She isn't just hitting it and quitting it. And it's not like she's changed her mind just once. She's gone back and forth to each a thousand times already. Hell, Sawyer wasn't even around in the 06 period. Yet she still couldn't help but jerk Jack all over the place. Kate does what she wants based on how she feels at the moment and takes other people's interests to heart none whatsoever. It would be one thing if she was just banging the guys then taking off in the middle of the night. But she keeps playing it up on the emotional level.

And yeah. You're prob right that Elizabeth Mitchell being 100 times the actress than Live Links girl likely plays a bit into us empathyzing with her character more.

It's interesting, after one episode, that the Juliet/Sawyer relationship is so much more believable than Skack. And enough to turn a bunch of cynical bloggers into hard-core shippers.

I also think that if Sawyer drops Juliet like a hot potato, it's gonna be such a bunch of bullshit. He's a different guy at the end of that episode ... he's totally Mr. Metro Committed, stopping on the way home to pick her up flowers, giving her a simpering grin when she saves the baby. He's been with her for three years at this point and seems completely happy with it. Is he really gonna give it all up for one more shot at the indecisive kook that he knew for 3 months a few years ago?

Gotta add my vote in support of Juliet's fantastic back too!

And Ms Mader. No offense. But you have an ugly face.

James said...

Good points Jordan. My comments weren't aimed at anyone in particular btw, just the general "Oh my God, the fucking tart did it again" routine.

MB, thanks for the backup. I think my Kate issues are as follows:

Kate was written as you said, as a linchpin character for the show. Unfortunately, despite all the potential spunk and cuteness, she just doesn't seem to connect with viewers as powerfully as the writers intended. A great example of this, I feel is that many of us (all fans, not just our mob) truly find her characters back story dull. How many times have we said "Another boring Kate ep" ?. The story doesn't connect, and her acting doesn't connect either. She's not a bad actress at all...tons worse out there...but its a big, big part and I just don't think she can carry it. I mean, there hasn't been a single moment when I ever believed that she would actually have taken Aaron under her wing like that!

She is also eclipsed by the likes of Mitchell, who does a stellar job really. Add to this all the back and forth between Jakatawiet and it makes for tedium. I mean...I really, really couldn't give a shit about Jack or Kate. Not even Sawyer or Kate really.

It's a credit really to Josh Holloway and Elizabeth Mitchells performance (and the writers) that in just one episode, there is more empathy and logic for a love story of 3 years between Sawliet than we've seen in a long time between anyone else.

And lets face it...the Desmond Penny romance actually has gravity and importance in comparison to anything Kate has gotten into.

I can guarantee you that if I was one of the characters on the Island, I would literally view Kate as that cute moron, who I occasionally get to flirt with, once in a while get to bang whenever she falls out with another dude or alternatively cracks open one or two many Dharma beers, and I'd be hard pressed I imagine to feel any long lasting feeling for her.

James said...

And I would like to say, once again, that I don't understand all the "Rebecca Mader is an ugly whore" stuff. I think she is actually very attractive...I think every (straight) dude here would have a crack if they had a chance.

And this isn't aimed directly at you, Mr 206...though you are a guilty accomplish ;)

This post submitted by: James Phillips...a man who loves women.

Jordan said...

Interesting that you bring up Desmond and Penny. Most fans LOVE them as a couple. I've always been indifferent. Yes, their story and what they've gone through is compelling. But for whatever reason, I just don't care much for Penny. Her character has always seemed a bit distant to me. Desmond is great. But without both sides to the equation, I can't get too invested. That's why I think I like Sawyer and Juliet together so much. I really like and empathyze with both characters. Something that has never been the case with Jack and Kate.

Rebecca Mader said...

Being less attractive is a conscious choice - that's how you know I'm a serious actress. Just look at how shitty Charlize Theron made herself look to win an Oscar.

memphish said...

I assume someone has to feel her. May as well be Jimmy.

One more sound off on Kate. I think Kate had the potential to have a real relationship with Jack or Sawyer. But the way they've writter her, Kate doesn't seem capable of having a relationship with anyone. She sleeps with one guy and flirts with the other. Gets mad at one and sleeps with the other. Her idea of a relationship seems to be a guy doing what she wants and sex, not necessarily in that order. She has proven utterly incapable of considering what the guy might want or need and contributing in anyway to the relationship other than as a warm body.

As I said earlier, all that talk of "having my back," clearly meant to echo early Jack and Kate, just goes to show Juliet as someone who cares about a person as more than someone to have angry grief sex with while Kate has failed to ever put the mans wants or needs together with actually having sex. Her refusal to tell Jack what happened with Aaron is just another nail in the coffin of that "relationship." Sex without trust isn't a relationship, it's just sex, and that's okay, but it's not love.
