There must be some facial expression class in Britain that both Damien Lewis and Jamie Bamber took. I'm watching Life and I'm seeing Lee Adama half the time. Which is not to say that I think Bamber is in any way the superior actor to Lewis. Lewis is spectacular in Band of Brothers.

Drove around quite a bit tonight. Amazing to see dark neighborhoods everywhere. Very few have power even in my area of the city. I believe that it will be weeks for some. My mother-in-law lives on a lake 45 miles north of here and they have been told 3-4 weeks. You guys who don't live in this heat and humidity can't imagine the misery of no A/C here. What I truly enjoy seeing is the morons who didn't evacuate complaining that FEMA isn't doing enough. When did personal responsibility disappear in our society?

The frickin' boats laying on the roads are the most telling images of all to me. I can't imagine how long it will take for life to return to normal here. My kids have no school until at least Thursday, maybe longer. They are ignorantly delighted.

Elias - I think The Inbetweeners is one of those ones that's on both Channel 4 and E4 and you're never sure which one it shows on first.

We're down one more member of Pink Floyd, RIP Rick Wright. Sad day for British music.

scrdmnkydst said...

It started as an E4 show. Then when it got good ratings, it got a rerun on C4.

Just like Skins.

Ooh. I can't wait for Skins season 3.

elias said...

I've been avoiding 4 and E4 for a while - Big Brother and whatever else they schedule. Isn't Skins like Hollyoaks?

Chris - a fan of Pink Floyd? Sad day indeed. They got booed off stage in Ealing back in the Syd Barrett days for being too f**king weird.

scrdmnkydst said...

Skins is sooooooooooooooooooooooo much better than Hollyoaks! Skins focuses on 16-18 year olds and it deals with topics like that... but it's much more entertaining than how i made it sound.

wassup blogspotters,

- Ike sent some gusty winds up to Pittsburgh, and as a result i haven't had power since Sunday.
Right after the 1st quarter of the Steelers / Browns game, there was a small explosion right outside of my window with sparks flying everywhere. The report is that there are over 5,000 power lines down across the city, and i probably won't have power at home until saturday or monday.

- Power at work. i guess that's a good thing. nice to have A/C and the internet anyway.

- i'm downloading all of my stories now. most of my shows come on Sunday & Monday. I wonder if i can get the rest of that football game.

- Stephanie, i'd love to take part on the podcast some day.

- glad the hurrispotters and bears made it through Ike okay.

[ally] said...

it's pretty crazy around here. a lot of people left town so it's quiet. no power/little power means you have to treat each stop light as a 4 way stop, which adds a lot more time to your trip. a lot of stop lights are either hanging, pushed to the other side or gone altogether. i can't imagine what it looks like where there was "real damage". here on my side of town is where they're holding a lot of the staging areas for the red cross, FEMA and the military that are heading out to where it's bad. it's crazy to be hanging out in your backyard and seeing all these military helicopters flying by.

memphish said...

Ally -- so glad that you are doing well even if you are hot and sweaty and being forced to work. Thanks for sharing those pictures.

Andrew, I would consider it an honor to have you on my show.

Steph - lol - that partially answers the question I was going to email you with: about when to record with you? Sounds like you've got a full plate this week - no worries. But I suppose Chris and I should finish the splice first (perhaps w/Emily?). I'll email both of you and work it out.

Jordan said...

Holli, I was speaking with our friend Kimberley. And she hated the movie more than I did. I should clarify my earlier comments. It's not a horrible film. It has interesting and at times humorous characters. But besides that, zip. There isn't one single thing about the script to me that is interesting or anything of substance. I know it's a goofy movie that doesn't take itself serious. That is fine. But it has no point. When it ended, I found myself thinking, "What was the point of any of that?" Trust me. If it wasn't done by the Coens and didn't have Clooney, Pitt, etc in it, it would have been lambasted by critics.

Jordan said...

And I still think Vantage Point is a truly horrible movie. It's funny. EVERYBODY I know here in Seattle who saw it HATED it. But then I go online, mainly here, and people liked it. I dunno. Maybe it's a regional thing.

And forgot to say to Ally that I'm glad she's safe. Sucks about the no power. Hopefully it will come back soon.

I'm off to the cinema to see some more films tonight. I will be sure to report on what I end up seeing.

t-dot kim said...

Steph, looks like Tuesday is the best day. Does that work for you Alirio? You're going to be in Toronto then, right?

I did HATE Burn After Reading. HATED it. I like the characters...George Clooney was funny as was Francis McDormet...but that's it. I wanted to walk out of the theatre. The Coen Bros have reached a point in their career where they can get away with murder--especially after winning an Oscar for their previous movie. It was TERRIBLE.

Glad to see you back and safe Ally. Hope that you get your power back up soon ... that can't be a good time.

That DeSean Jackson play was astoundingly stupid. At least the Cowboys were already blowing out the Bills at the time. He would never be forgiven if it had cost the Eagles a TD ... as it was, they got the ball back and B. West scored 15 seconds later. My hope is that it embarrassed him and teaches him some humility ... he's really cocky and has done stupid stuff like that before. He's also the best WR the Eagles have drafted since Mike Quick ... and that was in 1982! So we're not gonna be too hard on him.

Donovan, on the other hand ... you've been in the league 10 years and you decide to do a double pump on a HANDOFF when you've got the lead late in the game? And you STILL don't know to throw the ball away when you're in the hurry up offense and about to be sacked?!?! Dude, what the hell....

Jordan said...

The Weeds finale was pretty good. A lot better than some of the episodes this season. The first couple seasons of the show were great. Seems like they don't know exactly what to do to recapture the magic. Mary-Louise Parker was really good in this ep. Even better than normal. She really deserves some recognition. And how about Doug's big moment? Haha.

So I went and saw Pineapple Express and Righteous Kill last night. I thought PE was hilarious. A few people had told me that they just found it kinda humorous, but I laughed my ass off the entire time. Righteous Kill, which has been absolutely lambasted by critics, wasn't all that bad. Wasn't all that good either. But it was watchable. Was fun watching Deniro and Pacino together. The film was executed a bit sloppy. But when you have low expectations, as I did, you can deal with it. Not close to as bad as the critics say.

Which leads me to a bit of a rant. Film critics. I don't know how many of you frequent Rotten Tomatoes or MetaCritic or any other site that gives you quantitative movie reviews and general consensuses. But it has become increasingly apparent to me that at least a good 50-75% of film critics out there do nothing more than wait for enough reviews to come out and then jump on the bandwagon. "Oh, everybody seems to think that Juno is the bestest thing ever. I better go along with them, so I look like I know what I'm talking about." Seems that all movies nowadays are either universally loathed or given a giant circle jerk of praise. Really annoying as nobody seems to have their own thoughts anymore. And there is suddenly no such thing as an "ok, but not great" movie. Everything is either amazing or horrible. Maybe it's a biproduct of this internet age we live in where every fat nerd in his mother's basement qualifies as a critic. The "worst episode ever" fanboy attitude has permeated into mainstream culture and now there is no such thing as a middle ground. It used to be that Joss Whedon fans or Coen Bros admirers would overrate their glorious heros' work, but the rest would judge it with an objective eye. And likewise with angry, frustrated, mad at the world haters. But now, with this copycat critic world that has grown from the "everyone's a critic" internet age, everything has homogenized into one yay or nay lump of lemming-like drivel. I dunno. I guess that the main thing that bothers me is that there are a lot of movies out there that are "ok, but not particularly great or terrible". A lot of things that after I watch them, I think, "That wasn't bad." But it's become a world where if you don't think a movie is Oscar worthy or breath taking and innovative, it by default sucks balls and is a pile of dreck. And as a person who highly believes that most things in life, be it movies, tv shows, books, music, food, what have you, fall into the category of a so called "average middle ground", it just annoys me to no end this sensationalist, "best/worst movie ever" society.

I realize the main topic somewhat shifted midway through from copycat critics to sensationalism. But I believe in both parts. Sorry for the rant. It's been a while. I needed the release. And as always, don't take it too seriously. What I type always comes off way more opinionated and intense than I really believe it to be. It's funny that way.

Been watching "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia". Pretty funny. No "Arrested Development" or "Curb Your Enthusiasm". But a funny little show if you're looking for a stupid time waster.

memphish said...

Holli, I liked that link better the first time I saw it when it was called, "If Celebs were from Oklahoma". lol. Have I mentioned lately how much I hate Oklahoma? Last Sunday at the Hawks game I ran into some old ladies from the big Joke who had attended the UW-OU game the day before. I spouted off some comments about stealing our basketball team and getting the hell out of our state. The old bitch's reply, "Deal with it." Had she not said that, the rest of the game wouldn't have been as bad for her. Without getting into too much detail, let's just say I didn't take it easy on her each and every time she decided to get up and go to the bathroom. Lesson be learned old bitchy ladies from Jokelahoma.

Jordan said...

Holli, You're most likely right. I do however feel that the internet has made things much worse. And at least much more noticeable and annoying.

Don't even get me started on Orpah and her mindless army. lol.

memphish said...

Yeah Jordan, I agree about the internet. I think it's just broadened the items suitable for bandwagoning. Before I just had to ask myself "can I write off all the critics as elitist suck-ups who don't get what's really entertaining?" Now you have to decide if you want to buck your "community" as defined by various websites. Hell, even Netflix is trying to tell you what you'll like. You don't know me Netflix! You don't.

Glad to see your still Oklahating.

Holli

Chris JC said...

I agree entirely, Jordan.

Jordan said...

One other thing that is driving me absolutely up the wall. This I'll try to keep shorter than the last. Partisan political know it all's. In no way trying to start anything. But you can't listen to the radio or watch tv without people getting mad at people who don't think like them and using the stupidest argument in the history or arguments. "You don't know what you're talking about. You're just repeating what you've read and/or been told." Really? Then just what the hell are you saying then? Let me get this straight. The person you disagree with is a biproduct of propaganda and lies, but all the facts and accusations you believe to be in, now those are a bastion of truth. Yeah, that's logical. AGAIN, this "all or nothing" society we live in. I'm right, you're wrong. I'm good, you're bad. You're either with us or you're against us. I know everything, you know nothing. SIGH.

Wow. Talk about ironic timing. So after I posted my rant about the internet and critics, I took a trip trip to the restroom. I was reading the latest issue of Rolling Stone, the comedy issue with all the comedians on the cover. There was a section where they were asking various famous funny people their opinions on things. Here's what Albert Brooks had to say about the internet:

"I think the internet is slowly going to take down all creativity. Great art of any kind needs a gestation period. It needs a period where people keep their opinions to their fucking selves. You take any artist from the history of the world, from Michelangelo to Bozo the Clown - and if you can have widespread opinion on their first time out, you can kill the great spark that makes them who they are. That is what the internet is allowing. It's allowing millions of opinions on Day One. It's almost like, if you show me your newborn baby, and I do complete genetic testing, and I tell you in the first week of your baby's life that he's going to make $18,000 a year and work in Africa and be an explorer, and he's gonna get bitten by a tiger, and there's a good chance he's gonna have leukemia. I'm gonna take the joy out of his early child birthdays. Large amounts of opinion too early in an artist's life is like a cancer."

Jordan said...

Now I don't agree with everything he said, But he does make some very valid points. Especially about instant analysis hurting the creative process. It makes me think of tv shows. How different would some of our favorites, or less than favorites, be if their show-runners were allowed to do what they originally intended to do? Instead of succumbing to whiney fans and know-nothing network execs.

For example, would Seinfeld, a show that took some time to find it's creative genius, have survived it's first season in today's internet age and world of demanded instant satisfaction? Not likely.

[ally] said...

Steph, I think you need to have our friend Jordan on your podcast.

memphish said...

But how much is fans and how much is no-nothing execs? I think it's more the case that shows aren't allowed to develop because network execs (like Wall Street types) are looking for immediate return instead of long-run profitability. The internet is full of vocal communities like the Jericho people trying to save shows more than people trying to kill them.

Ally, I will have your friend Jordan on my podcast. All I will have to do is mention the words "Oklahoma" and "comedy" to set him off. My job will be done.

[ally] said...

you don't even have to say anything, just randomly throw topics at him and he's good to go. can't wait to hear and not read some of the stuff he has to say.

do it jordan!

LOL! Now Jordan is truly back - I have been WAITING for a real rant! I was beginning to think Europe had mellowed your rant-full side.

I have to love that you included this quote in your critique of the critics:

"...this internet age we live in where every fat nerd in his mother's basement qualifies as a critic."

Now - let's be fair Jordan - some are thin

Also, was checking back thru posts to make sure I hadn't missed a rant and found your link to THIS PIC of Tina Fey and John McCain

Were you PRECIENT or something of the fact that she was about to play Palin in the now ubiquitous SNL sketch?
- impressive! :)

In honour of "talking like you're from Cornwall day", I've got a new iPod that's 30x bigger than my last one, in storage terms, and is actually 40gb bigger than my actual computer hard drive.

This means: it's PODCAST TIME AGAIN

I've just read that, even with the Volume Limiter set at maximum, the output of the European iPod Classic 5th Gen is approx 60-65% quieter than the same item purchased anywhere else in the world.

I genuinely don't mean to go out of my way to complain (honest), but for crying out loud...

Chris JC said...

I'm amused by the fact that "Jan" clearly hasn't paid for the stock picture she's using. That or she didn't quite understand what to do.

mb said...

Chris - I am on iPod #3 (still have my original one, #2 was stolen), and I have noticed a marked decrease in maximum volume level. I certainly am in support of people not blowing their eardrums out, but podacasts and even different CDs I import, there is a considerable variance in overall volume level, and there are times on the street or in crowded areas where I have trouble hearing the audio (this is most often with podcasts).

Maybe I've just gone to too many rock concerts and already blown my eardrums out listening to music on headphones since I was a pre-teen, but it is certainly frustrating.

I am curious now that I type all this, whether other people (particularly people younger than myself) are having the volume issue.

mb said...

Wait...I've only had one cup of coffee this morning - so I need to double check - I'm assuming Serenity by Jan is officially connected to The Office? Or is this a fan mock-up - either way - LMAO!

Good luck Herlihy.

Skipping Heroes. Y'all let me know 3 weeks from now if I should catch up. I'm so ready for How I Met Your Mother. I hope it's legen -- wait for it -- dary.

Even tho LOST didn't win last night, a former LOST actor did. It was Juliet's own hit by a bus ex who defeated Michael Emerson. And I have to say I watched all of Damages last year and he was good, tho IMHO not Emerson good.

gif or animated gif?

gif reminds me of jif peanut butter which prompts me to ask whether Skippy, Jif, and Peter Pan peanut butter brands are available in the various blogspotters' locales.

regale me with tales of available peanut butter brands around the world.

/eating goober peas

Chris JC said...

Skippy hit a few places as an import here a couple of years ago. Jif I didn't encounter until a lady called Stephanie (not that one) sent me some over from the US as she felt the need to share.

Since then, Skippy has become vaguely available (but, if you've ever visited here, you won't be surprised to know that we don't have anything like the same number of varieties - so no honey nut chunky for me). I've seen Jif in a few places lately as an import, and Peter Pan I've never seen.

I didn't realise how truly rubbish our peanut butter was until I discovered American peanut butter.

[ally] said...

i watched the emmys, nothing else was worth watching. it was ok. i def liked it better than last year's. ricky gervais was hilarious, trying to his emmy back from steve carrell who accepted it on his behalf last year.

i also loved josh groban performing the theme songs, that was pretty funny. there were some blah moments, but overall it was ok.

steph, i see the your avatar picture, but it's not animated. i don't know how we can get animated pictures on here anymore, i know back in the day it was possible.

palmer, we have a good variety of peanut butter here. i'm sure there are some brands we have here that no one's ever heard of and vice versa.

herlihy, this might be kinda late, but good luck on the date :)
