"Who is Number One...?"

Oh - it's Trevor.

Perhaps that should have been how the last episode of The Prisoner went instead of all that Dem Bones madness.

The finale by which all others shall be judged.

Trevor McFur said...

I've actually never seen any of the original Prisoner (please don't make me turn in my Geek badge). But I think if it's taken seriously, it could be a good thing. I agree that most modern remakes are junk, but every now and then something good happens (ex. BSG). The fact that it's on a quality basic cable station is a very good thing, I think.

Chris is number two

OK fourth if you count MB twice.

I've suddenly translated your French in my head and MB screwed you up :(

DarkUFO had some info. on OGR and Comic Con on the front page yesterday. I don't think a CV will be necessary. Sounds like it's the case that if you go to Comic Con you can get to the website before the rest of us non Comic Con schmucks.

I hope they realize that once 1 person at ComicCon has the URL it will be all over the web and will get enough server capacity.

Chris - was your dismay @the end of the last thread b/c of worry about the new Prisoner not being solely a British production (ITV and AMC co-producing it looks like), or b/c of the former rumor (I had heard at least) that Chris Eccleston might star?

memphish said...

Back to The Prisoner. I'd always heard it never really had a finale or at least the finale they wanted because the star was so nuts. Is that not correct Ask Chris?

Holli

PalmerEldritch said...

as i understand it, having never seen the show, they did have quite a humdinger of a finale.

which was somewhat similar to the Nowhere Man finale.

i also like the Farscape season four 4 finale as a "holy crap!" series ender. but that had a mini-series afterwards to clean up the finale.

Chris JC said...

I was just being a British tosser - the kind I hate. I'm getting over it now.

McGoohan certainly did Go Off The Page somewhat but that last episode, for all its insanity, does make sense to me - it's only the last few shots that pull it into place. It's marvellous

If you want to see The Prisoner, don't see the film "Killing Zoe" as it very casually spoils the central mystery of the whole series.

Chris JC said...

To clarify - I wasn't being consciously anti-American. I don't think there should be a British remake of The Prisoner either, but I am always prepared to be proved wrong.

And - at least it isn't Mel Gibson, like was rumoured for YEARS.

scrdmnkydst said...

I am shocked and appalled at the use of "curiouser". It sickens me.

Chris JC said...

What with that and your disagreement on the definition of portmanteau words, you really must have it in for Lewis Carroll.

Alirio said...

why is there so much talk of coat racks on the blogspot in recent weeks.

WTF?

:-D

Happy Canada day tomorrow!

Woot, eh!

memphish said...

You know what I'd like for Canada Day? Some TLI.

Alirio said...

oooh le snap!

scrdmnkydst said...

Chris JC - Who's Lewis Carroll?

I jest. I really, really dislike hit works. Makes my skin crawl. I hate it. Gimme a bit or Orwell or Wilde anyday.

Also, I've just had to fill in a 37-page document for a job interview tomorrow. :( :( :(

PalmerEldritch said...

hey, when the lovely ladies of TLI are ready to post their podcast, they will.

i imagine that poor Kim is busy hiding all of Canada's maple syrup in case Dale from the jay and jack show decides to visit Canada. :\

PalmerEldritch said...

p.s. AMERICAN GLADIATORS!!!

i hope crush destroys someone.

Anonymous said...

How postmodern of you to let biographical details affect your reading of the author's work.

Wilde is overrated anyway.

memphish said...

TLI is recorded. It just requires a Canadian to edit it. I was thinking that would be a good way to spend Canada Day. So that then I could spend the 4th of July enjoying. Truth, justice and TLI.

AG won't be until tomorrow for me. Kiddo is spending the night out.

Holli

scrdmnkydst said...

Simon - It's got nothing to do with any biographical details. His works don't sit right with me. It's a personal preference. I'm not saying that he's a shockingly bad author or anything.

Wilde isn't overrated. He's wonderful.

mb said...

Herlihy - didn't mean to offend your sensibilities with a children's book reference - lol

What's the skinny on the Weakest Link - have you heard anything more?

andrew. said...

- i <3 the Prisoner. I used to consider it the best television show ever made, ever to be made, but some obvious recent entries have bumped it a bit to #2 or 3.

The story I've heard on the finale was that the producers wanted more episodes but McGoohan felt it had run its course, so he locked himself away and wrote the finale. The finale takes a very metaphorical twist and it angered the majority of the viewing audience, invested in what they thought was a more meat & potatos spy thriller, so much that McGoohan went into hiding for a while.

I imagine there would be a similar uproar if Lost had a sort of a "2001: A Space Odyssey" wrap-up.

PalmerEldritch said...

point of lost discussion:

Both Isabelle and Harper are antagonistic female Others and seem like they were possibly going to be recurring characters. Was Isabelle "take one" and Harper "take two" of trying to create a recurring female Other baddie?

Think we'll see a "take three" or do you think Harper will actually show up again?

PalmerEldritch said...

or do you think that their characters/roles are totally unrelated?

Anonymous said...

Oh, and snerk to the Canadian Heritage Minutes. I only just discovered them this year, but still, hilarious.

memphish said...

I suppose whether or not we get more Harper or take three will depend on actress availability. I think that's part of why the Sheriff was eliminated. My vote would be for a Take Three because Harper's eyebrows and mole were very distracting. It's hard to say where they are going with those Others.

Do you think Harper will psychoanalyze Locke? Maybe that's the very bad thing that happened.

Holli

Trevor McFur said...

I think that Harper was meant to be the 'face of the Others' since it didn't look like Nester Carbonell was going to be available. Now that he's back, I bet we don't see much of Harper anymore.

Isabelle was created, I think, as a springboard for more stories should the show need to go on indefinitely. She was supposed to be 'The Sheriff' and looked like she was a pretty major player in The Others' power structure, so they could use her to look at the Others' justice system, etc. Then suddenly, she never appears again, even in flashbacks, and supposedly dies off-screen. It really sounds like, they got the end-date, they realized that they didn't need her or any storylines they might get from her anymore, so, boom, she's gone.

andrew. said...

I agree that Harper was probably taking Richard Alpert's place as the placeholder for the Others. I kind of hope we see her next in the same fashion as we were first introduced to Goodwin, shishkabob. It would be a fitting end for such a jerk, and it could be the 1st hint that things were going very badly on the island.

I really liked Juliet's character when they first introduced her. Her motivations were mysterious, and even her friendly actions were colored with a dangerous edge. Isabelle & Harper were both outwardly villainous and i don't think it worked.

Cindy will rise in the Others' ranks from glorified babysitter to Queen of the island after a number of Cindy-centric flashback episodes which show that she was chosen by the island at birth.

LOST.

Happy Canada Day!!

I'm celebrated by waking up at 3pm, had a bowl of Shreddies, then had some Ketchup chips and a Coffee Crisp about 10 mins ago. I plan on drinking nothing but beer...Molson Canadian Beer that is during a fireworks show at Ontario Place. Yes, we are also having BBQ for dinner--maybe some Caribou or Moose (we haven't decided yet, lol)

...and YES, I did go to Tim Hortons today, and had a Maple Donut

p.s. hope you had caribou.

Jordan said...

Hez yo blogspot! What up?

Yeah MB, I'm with you on wondering if ketchup chips would be any good.

The only thing I am missing from tv right now is AG. I will have to do a marathon when I get back.

Arrested Development movie, woot! A lot of shows that I love, I wouldn't be too excited if they did a movie. But something tells me that they can pull it off right. I remember Mitch Hurwitz saying that they wouldn't do one unless they had a good idea.

Been in Budapest the past couple days. Cool place. It was freaking hot as hell yesterday. Something like 36 degrees celcius, which if my calculations are correct, is nearing 100. I got a bit of a sunburn while walking all over the place. Today I'm catching a bus to the southern coast of Croatia. Going to Split, then Dubrovnik.

Kim, how do I celebrate Canada day in Hungary? I don't think it will be so easy to find any Molson or Kokanee. Maybe I can make a fake maple leaf and put it on my backpack like all the Canadian travelers do. "I'M NOT AMERICAN!!!" lol

Trevor McFur said...

I had no idea who Don S. Davis was until I clicked that link ... that's Major Briggs!!! :( What a great character actor. I think that he played a military man in everything I've ever seen him in.

Chris JC said...

Garland Briggs is certainly what I knew him from first - I chose One Breath in the end as although his appearance in it is short, it's properly iconic. I believe he had military experience and so just had the right bearing about him. As he strode off last night in his ghostly white Air Force garb, the wife said "that man knew how to wear a uniform".

I never really got into Stargate, the series so I don't know if this is true here as well - but I always found it odd that although he was usually cast as military figures I can't recall him barking orders like an action stations commanding officer - he always had a very calm, centred effect on screen.

[ally] said...

i tried to keep up as much as i could with the posts, while i was out.

on the plane ride home there was a flight attendant that resembled Abaddon, it kinda freaked me out at first.

I'm really looking forward to The Dark Knight. It's been a while since I've enjoyed the IMAX experience so I might have to do that for this one.

jordan, MGS4 was pretty fantastic. graphics are crazy and the gameplay is a lot of fun. it's got pretty high replay value too thanks to all the unlockables. the cutscenes are pretty long, but the story and the execution is pretty epic. it's definitely Metal Gear though so expect strange plot twists and complicated storylines referencing back to the first game.

Palmer, I see what you mean about the goofy sense of humor in MGS. Like the guy who keeps having cramps as you're fighting the Frogs.

It's pretty much all but done for the Sonics to leave Seattle. The only thing keeping the team from leaving was their lease with Seattle's arena ... there was a lawsuit going on between the team and the city, and, last week, the city caved and accepted a buyout from the team.

About to watch Wet Hot American Summer. I have a feeling it will be just like Meatballs, Caddyshack, all those last 70's Sex Comedies. Am I right?

I'll be staying in Chula Vista for under 200$ per.

It's only 25 min on the trolley from the convention center.

Trevor McFur said...

I've heard that it's supposed to be more of a parody of the summer camp comedy. I'm hesitant to try any Lars-recommended comedies since sitting through the debacle that's 'Run Ronnie Run'.

PalmerEldritch said...

i stayed in Chula Vista last year and was going to stay in Chula Vista this year until the girlfriend changed the reservations this morning.

the trolley isn't bad. at night it gets pretty crowded but nobody was rude or anything. i think that the people of San Diego know that its Comic-Con time and excuse everyone for not having any idea what they're doing and for dressing up like Spock and Captain America.

i'm late for lunch but i'll try to link you guys to the web site about the trolleys this afternoon. you can buy your trolley passes either online or at a little kiosk at a lot of the trolley stops.

I didn't care for Wet Hot American Summer. Not funny. Yeah, Trev, after I saw Forbidden Zone I am scared. Very scared.

Stephanie,

You'll be pleased to know, I started editing the podcast Aimee and I recorded. I'm about a 1/3 of the way done--hey, it's progress.

PS> Forever 21 is the best! There are now 2 in the Toronto area, so I don't have to drive to Buffalo anymore, woo hoo!

PalmerEldritch said...

ok, comic-con'ers. all the San Diego transit sites are not working for me but try http://www.sdmts.com/Trolley/Trolley.asp or http://www.sdcommute.com/ maybe.

and i can't find it now (man, i'm not very useful right now) but http://www.comic-con.org/ used to have a link that'd help you find hotel rooms.

PalmerEldritch said...

this might be the link

Anonymous said...

sweet. Thank you ComiCon Website. I just scored a hotel downtown on the shuttle route for about 160 per night. Best Western here I come!

PalmerEldritch said...

nice! hope it all works out and that they dont deny your credit card and then not tell you... again. :(

- i've been hit with a bad case of podcast-fatigue. I keep zoning out really quickly when listening to the Jay & Jack Show or the Lost Flashbacks. TLI is just what the doctor ordered.

- tried to play Lost: Via Domus last night. After i talked to virtual-Cindy, my computer crashed, and i spent the next 6 hours on the phone with tech-support. i think i'm just going to read a summary and skip the rest.

- Anybody going to Comicon, snap a few pics of my hero, PuShead (legendary punk/skateboard artists, most famous for doing all of the Metallica T-shirts for the past 20 years). He'll be at the Super7 booth signing his vinyl figures.

- "Weeds" is pretty good this season. I never know how many episodes are going to be in a season, but there's a pretty strong trajectory in place.

- dear neighbors, 4th Of July is only 1 day out of the year. Please retire your bottle rockets and cherry bombs for the year. The cats i'm watching this week would like to climb off of the ceiling now.

PalmerEldritch said...

american gladiators on family feud tonight.

andrew., i like that your computer collapsed under the sheer awesomeness of virtual cindy. at least you got the important part of the game over with before it crashed.

Trevor McFur said...

Does anyone know where The Chin's book is now? His Awesomeness himself is going to be at Comic-Con, and if we could get the book into the hands of a Con-attending blogspotter............

Alirio said...

Kim was looking for it to send to me the last time I heard.

I still haven't gotten it though :-(

Too bad because I will be there.

Any luck finding it Kim?

PalmerEldritch said...

my copy is already signed by The Chin. and it is GLORIOUS.

[ally] said...

I don't have The Chins book but I do have the other one, Make Love The Bruce Campbell Way. Which I still haven't read. I went on vacation came back and still haven't even picked it up. Maybe I can get on that soon.

Somebody so needs to get a picture with him. It will be like Christmas morning for all of us.

t-dot kim said...

I (still!!!) have the Chins book. I found it, and Alirio you're next.

PalmerEldritch said...

hurry, kim, hurry!

then alirio can sneak it into the United States and try to get the Chin to sign it!

[ally] said...

For Palmer.

How did you not get this gig?

Alirio said...

Awesome!

Can't hardly wait...

American Gladiators on Family Feud?

I'd like to see NPH at ComicCon.

Kimberley, Morgan got a cute fedora hat and a t-shirt with guitars all over it. The prices are not bad at Forever 21.

mb said...

A VERY small piece of info at the SPLOG

I'm almost embarrassed calling it a spoiler really :/ But my desperation in the offseason wins out ;)

PalmerEldritch said...

steph, now morgan can do her Matthew Fox impersonation thanks to that Fedora. it'll go over better than chopping her hair off and pasting it to her chin for a VicodinFunTimeJack impersonation.

Ooh. Something interesting. Dunno if you know about this... but hey.

Heroes: Going Postal

I think this is a case of them thinking up a title and then fitting a story about it... I shall watch this. First episode is out on the 14th.

PalmerEldritch said...

steph, that IS scary. i have a feeling it may be Deiter behind it all.

herlihy, that dude has a fivehead.

scrdmnkydst said...

what the hell is a fivehead?!

PalmerEldritch said...

just means he has a big forehead.

[ally] said...

Perhaps I should have left it there and given it a good home.

I felt a slight vibration.

I put my hand down my bra and pulled out.

that's what she said.

- those rabbit murders have inspired next summer's blockbuster: X-Files 3: German chupacabra. Vorsicht!

- ugh. Heroes. i want to like it but I get the sense that the writers grew up on television & have very little frame of reference otherwise so a lot of the plot lines fall into melodrama cliches.

- Based on a bunch of positive reviews, i'm getting cautiously optimistic about Hellboy 2. I'm just going to have to get over how different it is from the comics. Unfortunately, in this heavy superhero movie season, it's just a place holder until Batman anyway.

- who's in the coffin? oh, we know that already.

Trevor McFur said...

That rabbit murder case reminds me of The Curse of the Were-Rabbit.

Earlier today, I was goofing off and watching Youtube videos. Now, I click and I get a message saying that I don't have Java installed. Weird.

PalmerEldritch said...

trevor, switch your computer out with a co-workers tonight. that way you can watch Youtube tomorrow and, when someone confronts you, you can say it was all part of a funny joke you were playing on your co-worker.

And i'd love to e-mither you, but i'll be jiggered if i can find your address...

It does sound like good fun, but I have FACT0RZ: residents parking means I have nowhere to store the car while fixing it up, nor the cash for MOT, insurance and stuff.

And I don't have a passport.

I live off the fucking GRID man - even my birth certificate is lost to time.
