Awesome. Awesome. Awesome.

I'll have something to listen to when i get up. YAY. Interested to hear the thoughts about the new futurama movie...

fantastic! this'll help me keep my sanity at work tomorrow.

thanks, guys! ...thighs? :\

See, that's not even a proper portmanteau. It may use the same syllables but it doessn't use the same letters and a portmanteau is defined as being a word that is comprised of two words amalgamated together. ...If this doesn't make sense, which i fear it won't, it's because it's almost 6am. :(

Chris JC said...

I can't think of any examples that use the entirety of two words.

Almost time for brunch (oh!).

anyone get the new coldplay album? there's a song called "lost" followed by a song called "42". isn't that weird? i wonder if they're fans.

by the way, the album isn't great. it's what you'd expect from coldplay though.

PalmerEldritch said...

herlihy, it was just an observation that contracting Thanks and Guys to Thuys in the tradition of Look Around You's ant joke sounds a lot like the word Thighs. which is a weird thing to say to Ben and Ralph on the interwebs. your portmanteaus are safe... for now!!!

Octagon Global Recruiting E-mail from this morning. Interesting.

I'm jealous I haven't gotten anything from Octagon yet. I didn't register for several days after the finale.

The book I was reading last night, Remember Me by Sophie Kinsella had a character with a LOST mug. Unfortunately he was a giant wanker.

Good to have The Lars back. Here's my Futurama list:

5. The Birdbot of Ice-Catraz

"Those aren't even medals, they're bottle-caps and pepperoni slices!"

4. Bender Gets Made

"It's gonna be clamp this, clamp that, badda-climp badda-clamp!"

3. Godfellas

"Oh cruel fate, to be thusly boned. Ask not for whom the bone bones, it bones for thee."

2. Where No Fan Has Gone Before

"I think I've been to enough conventions to know how to spell Melllvar"

1. Mars University

"I'll need 10 kegs of beer, a continuous tape of Louie Louie and a regulation two-storey panty-raid ladder"

Honourable mentions to Bender Should Not Be Allowed on TV and Roswell That Ends Well.

Actually, Herlihy, while I disagree with your definition of a potmanteau word, as a fan of formerly-defunct-but-about-to-release-a-new-album band Extreme I should at least be able to quote both Politicalamity and, more obviously, Pornograffitti as valid examples of your definition.

Also, I have now seen every episode of The X-Files ever made. I feel good.

Benjamin said...

I'm not sure what the debate about portmanteaus is, but I would have to follow Lewis Carroll's excellent explanation in the introduction to the Hunting of the Snark.

Palmer - Jurassic Bark barely missed the top five, in part due to the "need" to end on the final episode. Here's my full ten, as we watched it earlier this year.

10. Fry & the Slurm Factory
"Tell them I hate them."

9. Godfellas
"Bonder, is it really you?"

8. Amazon Women in the Mood
"Me too, meatbag."

7. Time Keeps on Slipping (possibly my actual favorite)
"I'm just glad my fat, homely mama isn't here to see this."

6. Jurassic Bark
"But if you don't perform, in what sense do we have an act?"

And of course, the top five we know. I'm in the midst of selecting another five. Like a backup five, that I can watch this weekend, to get me in the mood.

Stephanie said...

Did Ben have the saddest Futurama episode ever in his list? The one with the dog?

Benjamin said...

That's in the top ten, Steph, it's Jurassic Bark. Very sad, and ultimately it would've been pretty relevant for the first movie. As would The Why of Fry or The Day The Earth Stood Stupid.

Chris JC said...

Shyamalan and The Twists:

I would argue (having never seen Praying With Anger or Wide Awake, but then they're very different films anyway) that only The Sixth Sense and The Village have proper "twists" in them.

The revelation in Unbreakable is certainly shocking, but really just clarifies what you've seen before rather than turning it on its head. Signs is a treatise on fate, that everything happens for a reason so a twist is not really appropriate. Lady in the Water has a plot development where characters learn they've made some mistakes but is no more a plot twist than "they're digging in the wrong place!".

The Happening does have a twist, actually, it's that after months of reading about how it was dark and a potential comeback and me declining to see anything else at the cinema near the time so I can afford to go, it turns out that it wasn't worth the degradation my eyes suffered while being open all that time.

And I'm a Shyamalan apologist.

I tell you, though, I think I'm most annoyed that I was so excited to be getting out and seeing it that I decided not to stand around waiting for buses and powered to the cinema on foot, a walk which took about an hour (which is not to be sniffed at for a fat bloke) and took in some of North London's most exciting rickety deserted pedestrian walkways above noisy six-lane ring roads.

I actually enjoyed the walk MORE than the film.

That and some fucker three seats from me wouldn't shut up.

Wassup blogspot?

I learned a very important lesson this week ... it turns out that it really is NOT a good idea to have your laptop plugged into an outlet without a surge protector. Who knew? Fortunately the damage was to the AC adaptor only, and the laptop seems ok.

I've also learned that it's not really fair to call it 'vacation' when you're spending the entire week off landscaping your backyard.

But, it was nice to boot up the laptop again this evening to find, not only an email from Octagon Recruiting, but also a brand new Lars! Woo-hoo!

scrdmnkydst said...

You should have just told on them. I know it sounds childish... but it works. I used to work in a cinema and the managers used to be so petrified of a formal complaint as it would detract from their monthly bonuses, even if it was just about lack of monitoring patrons, they used to give free passes and free concessions if you complained enough. But, this is at a cineworld. you can get away with anything at a cineworld.

Chris JC said...

I also went to a Cineworld. A Cineworld in the middle of a trading estate that's really hard to get to.

I shoulda just stumped up the two extra quid for a UGC - better chair and less neck cricking - screen seemed really high AND I was in he back row.

Herlihy, man, it's quarter to three in the morning. We should probably both be copping some zeds.

scrdmnkydst said...

Haha, you can call me by my real name y'know...

Ahh. Cineworld. they're so good. I love it. I wish there was a cineworld where i go to uni, Lancaster if I hadn't mentioned... I don't like stupid VUE. I like getting my tickets from a box office and my popcorn, half sweet, half salty, from a proper concessions stand. Not both at the same time. >:(

I should be in bed... But i am not. I am watching loose women and then i am going to watch the rest of the US Life On Mars pilot. But I should be in bed but i have a stupid sleep disorder... i am on the way to becoming nocturnal. I set my alarm clock yesterday to wake me up at 3pm :( It's bad times.

Chris JC said...

The reason I don't use yer real name, Herls, is that I don't know what it is.

US Life on Mars pilot has already happened? I clearly lost track of its progress.

Any good?

scrdmnkydst said...

See... If you'd picked up on some of my many many blog plugs, then you'd know wouldn't you...?

Yeah. And possibly Dollhouse... I'm not too sure about that one. But Fringe is done. I've seen that. And i've got another pilot, called Middleman/men. It sounds like a very similar premise to Fringe though.

I didn't watch the original Life On Mars, but I know of it as a reference point... It seems too weird. And from what i've seen of Ashes To Ashes, the US Gene Hunt is just crap. Typically american with barely the humour. The US Sam Tyler looks... weird. Other than that, it's just a vaguely glossy US cop show.

PalmerEldritch said...

scrdmnkydst said...

Hmm. Yeah. You wouldn't think that something with four letters owould be unpronounceable... hmpf.

Life on Mars US is way too dark. They need to up the brightness on it. it's well annoying. If i can be bothered, i might keep up with the show when it starts airing properly...

Apparently the BBC are piloting a version of the same show... I find it hard to believe that a corporation, as seemingly uptight and respectable as it is, is doing a show like that. i'll be suprised if it gets a full comission.

Also. Something that may only interest Chris... is my favourite sentence ever.

James, while John had had "had", had had "had had"; "had had" had had impressed the teacher more.

A close second would be "Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo."

I love how homonyms and homophones combined can make complicated sentences!

Hmm. Just watched the Middleman pilot. It's quite weird. It seemed to have merged the sci fi of Fringe with the total farce of Pushing Daisies and became less than the sum of both parts. It has a really bad take on comedy by utilising some shockingly bad clichés. bad times. that and it just seemed... well, awful really. how disappointing.

mb said...

Chris - how is it that I have been unaware of your music till now? I like - good stuff!

Herlihy - your description of Middleman is right on. I liked it ok - but it absloutely is watered down. It seems like it's got good potential if it was some other network than ABC Family. I dare say (despite my usual distaste for it) Fox networks might be a good home to allow it to get a little grittier. Gotta credit them for putting on Tracey Ullman/the Simpsons, X-Files, House, In Living Color, and Mad TV.

Chris JC said...

Thanks for playing along with my claim of not pimping but I reckon you ARE aware of my musical sideline.

ALSO...The introduction to the show features long, near-sensual closeup shots of Sledge's .44 Magnum as it rests on a luxurious satin pillow. The show's ominous theme music, composed by Danny Elfman, plays in the background. Sledge then picks up his gun, spins it expertly like an Old West gunslinger, and utters his catch phrase ("Trust me, I know what I'm doing") just before firing into the screen, shattering it. The original version had Sledge firing directly at the viewer, but ABC executives feared this could be too shocking, possibly even causing heart attacks (and leaving the network liable). Thus, Sledge fires into the screen at a slight angle.

Chris JC said...

I bloody love Sledge Hammer.

Herlihy - no offence taken, reading your list of musical likes I'd have been very surprised if you DID like it. I reckon we've probably still got something in our canon (get me) that you'd go for.

MB - awesome. The voice you hear saying "Monkey Man! Monkey Man!" is Mark Heap who was Leonard Hatred, the inventor of Psilence in Look Around You 2.

Also, MB - I've just seen the start of the Doctor Who endgame, and I offer this brief synopsis of the spoilers we were discussing: bollocks.

scrdmnkydst said...

Chris - Well done, although i would expect someone who likes sci fi and suchlike to know of the word canon... but do you really have the whole emo/screamo/annoying vocals and heartfelt lyrics thing down...

RE: Doctor Who, i think the word "superfluous" fits better than bollocks. Next weeks looks like it will be amazing.

Chris JC said...

Please note, that wasn't my one-word review of the episode, but a comment on the accuracy of some spoilers that MB and myself have been puzzling over.

I actually used to write and record that kind of music in my bedroom about 11 years ago, but I wouldn't be able to do it now. I'm not the angry young chap I was.

As Morse would say (and does in Codex Machine's "No ReMorse") - It's Pathetic.

Perhaps I should belt out a cynical "This Ain't a Scene" type anthem.

scrdmnkydst said...

...did you just reference fallout boy? hahahahaha. if you're going to do some emo, then there's no need to limit yourself to those heathens... Go for something amazing, like Mayday Parade, Panic!'s debut, Brand New...

Aww. I love brand new. Everyone should go listen to Sic Transit Gloria...Glory Fades (note, that's not the proper video, i couldn't find it, but the song's the same...)

Anyways. That was my Doctor Who review.

I didn't think The Happening was so crappy. I enjoyed it as I enjoyed Expose. I don't think M Night meant for it to be taken very seriously. It was supposed to be cheesy, I think. I say it's as good as The Mist. It would have been better if Wahlberg's character had been more hip and cool than earnest. But overall, I say you should see it.

Chris JC said...

FOB was just an easy point of reference so I didn't start going off about Elliot Minor or Danger Radio or Electrelane or some other bunch that I used to know stuff about for work but have largely forgotten.

I'm concerned this is me looking like I'm disregarding this genre, but it really is based on nothing other than not knowing it very well.

I'm 31, I did all this stuff well over ten years ago and still have the ministry and Pigface albums to prove it.

Back on Pilot Watch.

Viewed Pretty/Handsome tonight. Well, just now really. Thought it was really good. But that's what you expect from the writer of Nip/Tuck. Thought it was very thought provoking and imaginative. It's got that really dark streak that Nip/Tuck does too... which, let's be honest, is a good thing. With a subject like this, it could ahve been way too easy for it to be all comedic and trivial, luckily, this walks the line...

Awesome. Shall watch this when the series starts good and proper.

- that karaoke of "Jump Around" was awesome.

- Finally watched the new Weeds & Diary Of A Call Girl. Weeds was definitely a recap/set-up episode, but i enjoyed it and look forward to the new direction. The Call Girl show was pretty dull and didn't really give any indication of what the show will actually be about. I think i'll probably skip it until 8 or 9 episodes from now when it has either caught on or failed.

- Venture Bros. is in fine form this season, although it's probably hard for anybody who hasn't seen the previous seasons.

- The commercials for Hellboy II look awful and so far from what I want a Hellboy movie to be. It's so strange how different it is in tone from the comics, which continue to be among the best out there. I'll definitely see it, but I have a feeling it's going to tank at the box office and the Hellboy/B.P.R.D. comics are going to take a hit because of it.

- Speaking of comics. I dropped Madman at issue 9. I made the decision after I bought issue 7 twice because I couldn't remember reading it and almost made the same mistake with issue 8.

- wow comicon is sold out for Saturday

Regarding Sledge Hammer, season 1 ended with Sledge setting off a nuke.

Alan Thingy (forgot his name) told the network that to find out how he was going to get out of it, they'd have to greenlight another season. they did and he set season 2 BEFORE season 1 to avoid having to explain it, even though this made the entire rest of the series make no sense.

Excellent.
