memphish said...

No Ally, I'm an episode behind, so it was in Episode 2. He was the blackmailing airplane mechanic.

MB, I love all those Schoolhouse Rock things. I have them on VHS. Next year when the kid is learning multiplication we'll have to pull them back out.

If you can't fold a Yoda, you could just get one of these.

well, in their defense, it's a pretty obvious reference. i'm half expecting Parkman to start singing "I Don't Want to Live on the Moon.

Wow Palmer. "I don't want to live on the moon" took me instantly back to a little kid. Talk about nostalgia. It even gave me chills for a sec. lol.

BTW, not sure if anybody fell for it. But I was joking in that last thread about turning 40. I'm only 26. No offense to anybody who is actually 40 intended.

Palmer, Forget Parkman signing alone. I want to see Parkman and Mohinder reprise Ernie and Aaron Neville's rendition of IDWTLOTM. I figure Mohinder would do the Aaron Neville part.

[ally] said...

I was gonna say something about your age, but i wasn't sure if you were kidding. I remember seeing Aimee's pictures from Seattle and i didn't think you looked 40, so i didn't say anything.

The theme to You Can't Do That On Television took me back to my childhood.

Jordan said...

The funniest thing just happened to me. I'm at work and I've been on the phone talking with a few different people regarding some business matters. And I was jotting down random notes on a sheet of paper. Among the notes was some contact info for different contractors. So anyway, I'm doing other work afterward and glance down at the paper on my desk the name "Bruce" and underneath it "Wayne". I think to myself, why the heck did I write Bruce Wayne? And then it hits me. Those were the two names of different contractors. It was totally random. lol. I couldn't stop laughing hysterically.

Trevor McFur said...

No, Wiggum is the cat's last name. Her first name is Chief.

memphish said...

Her?

Holli

Trevor McFur said...

Don't be sexist. Chief can refer to a female.

Trevor McFur said...

Actually, my wife thinks that our animals are all gender-confued. We've got a female cat named Chief Wiggum, and a female dog named Baxter O. Beagle. We just got a second dog, and my wife refused to let me name her. Her name is Bonnie A. Beagle.

I say, they're all neutered anyway, so who cares if they have boy names or girl names.

- luckily i'm not really familiar with the new Lost cast member. It's pretty safe to just assume there will be a lot of new cast members this year, and some of them will be buried alive.

- i was confused by the Naked Gun segment as well, mostly because i have a soft spot for the first Naked Gun movie but actively hate everything Leslie Nielson has been a part of since.

- Filmspotting gave Darjeeling Limited a tepid review, but they don't seem to like Wes Anderson very much anyway. Come to think of it, i really enjoy their show, but i don't trust their reviews very often.

PalmerEldritch said...

Thanks Palmer!

I have updated the SPLOG to include that info and basically did the ultimate in laziness and put up a link to Dark UFO cause there's a s-load of stuff on there from this week (shooting pics and info) and I'm too busy today. But - god willing - a new spoiler seg will be coming soon...

Trevor McFur said...

If you're not watching, here's the great musical number from Pushing Daisies this week. And if you're not watching, then start! It's definitely the most original new show this year.

Also, Holli posted a great clip yesterday of the Star Wars Trumpeteer. If you missed it in yesterday's forum, or even if you didn't, it's worth a view. I've watched it close to 20 times and it gets better each viewing.

Stephanie said...

Andrew, I haven't listened yet but Adam doesn't seem to be big on Wes Anderson. Sam was. Too bad he's gone. I don't expect the new guy to be singing Anderson's praises. I miss Sam. I found my opinions were more aligned with his. But Adam is talented with beautiful articulation. I heart Filmspotting. I'd listen to it everyday if I could. My throat hurts. I think I'm running a fever.

But she finished the show nevertheless - I suppose you could argue that took courage.

seriously though - (for the musically inclined), I forget my music theory, but it sounded like she transposed the notes consistently, they were just a step or two off (which is what often sounds the worst). too funny.

Jordan said...

Dubbed? Yuck. Still an awesome flick.

Holli, there was no groom's cake. Just a groom's open bar. lol. Come to think of it, I have NEVER in my life seen a groom's cake. Must not be popular here in Southern Canada.

I went and saw The Darjeeling Limited a couple nights ago. I quite liked it a lot. But then again, I am a huge Wes Anderson fan and tend to like everything he does. Even The Life Aquatic, which most didn't like. I can totally see how somebody who doesn't overly like his films, would not enjoy this one. But I thought it was very nicely done. Much of the same, but different enough to enjoy. If you like his stuff at all, I'd check it out.

Tonight:
Prison Break
Heroes

/i've totally given up on Journeyman (cause i don't understand it) and CSI Miami (cause it's a big ol' cheese fest!) I watched it last week and couldn't believe what was going on.

7:00- HIMYM
7:30- Aliens
8:00- Heroes
8:30- Samantha Who?
9:00- Weeds
From what I hear Journeyman is very complicated. It's like they said people like that complicated plot of Lost, let's make a show even more confusing.

memphish said...

I'm taping Chuck and Heroes and watching "The 23rd Psalm", episode 2.10 of LOST. I'll also be watching for the Horatio line on CSI:Miami. The last 2 weeks of Horatio lines have been awful. I'll also be looking to the blogspot for whether or not I should watch Heroes or stockpile. I'm going to need some encouragement like "just like S1" or "not as sucky as the last 3 episodes (4 if you count the finale)" to make me watch.

Possible Groom's Cake.

Holli

[ally] said...

that's awesome! screw the groom! i would want that for me!

i hope heroes is good tonight. it better move something along. i'm ready for some action.

PalmerEldritch said...

no PrisonBreak thanks to baseball that i don't care about? blech!

of course, if the Red Sox make it to the World Series, then i'll try to catch the last inning of the World Series. Schilling is the man. anyone who spends his free time playing computer games, buys the rights to the old Avalon Hill games so he can found a video game company around them, and devotes a room of his mansion to the Pacific theater of WW2 is ok in my book.

Heroes better whup some ass tonight. i saw the word "Wonder" on the tv earlier tonight and immediately thought of Maya and Aburrido. blech. snoozefest.

i think that Heroes needs something to happen each episode. maybe not a Freak of the Week like Smallville, but BSG almost always has a plotline introduced and resolved each episode. even if it is just "our wheat ship needs its engine repaired" or whatnot. Heroes is just "here's another part of the middle of the story."

memphish said...

Didn't watch Heroes. Watched LOST re-run instead. Frankly much happier.

I realized I like TV that thinks I'm smarter than a 5th grader; that makes reference to obscure Kinks songs and minor characters in the Old Testament; that makes me wonder are there born killers or can they be redeemed; that makes me seek out screencaps to find out WTF is in that smoke; that makes me grit my teeth every time it misquotes the 23rd Psalm . . . but still.

Looking forward to reports thumbs up/down on Heroes tomorrow. Off to see if Horatio redeems himself tonight.

A reason not to disconnect the cable.

I think my new Heroes strategy is to save them up so that when the writers' strike hits (scheduled for 10/31 and it looks very likely) I'll have something to watch after they run out of stuff they've managed to get in the can. As I type this I wonder if this is the problem with Heroes this year. Supposedly they've been working as fast as they can to get as much as they can ready in case of a strike. I'd say the writing demonstrates this fact is true.

memphish said...

The latest I read about the strike and LOST says they may be in the best position. They didn't take an extra-long hiatus despite the late airdate, so they have the opportunity at least to produce scripts at a normal pace. Assuming there is a strike, hopefully it would be resolved in plenty of time to get the rest of the season done without rushing giving the fewer number of episodes and late start date. Also, the have the potential to be one of the few shows on air with new episodes come February if the strike is a lengthy one.

Cuse is on the negotiating committee for the WGA.

Holli

PalmerEldritch said...

the WGA strike is a long con by Carlton Cuse to thoroughly bone the competition come february.

TV viewing report card:

- Curb Your Enthusiasm - B - seems like some of the magic is gone but each episode has a little nugget of Larry worth watching for. The war with Danson & living with the Blacks could be mined for a lot more. Also, Cheryl is a total bitch this season so i hope Larry hooks up with Vivica Fox.

- Reaper - D - i ended up watching episode 3 because i couldn't be bothered to take the show off of my DVR program. This show is dead in the water. i feel bad for the main guy, between this shit and that airline show it looks like that career he was getting groomed for is on the way out.

- Weeds - C+ - I'm really starting to worry about this show. At the moment it's neither funny nor compelling dramatically. It feels like it could turn that around at the drop of a hat so i'm holding out hope.

- Dexter - C- - This show is really on the cusp after the last 2 episodes. The dialogue in this show is so terrible that it really has to make up for it with the story and after a pretty good season opener the show feels like it's been backsliding.

- Brotherhood - B- - this show feels like the younger brother to the Sopranos & the Wire, constantly trying to prove himself. Sometimes he's quietly putting together a solid story but getting overlooked and sometimes he acts out in ridiculous ways to get attention. They seriously cheated by not following through with the outcome of last season's finale.

- The Shield - B+ - i'm finishing up season 4 now. I'm invested in all of the characters and i'm interested in what happens next, and that's 1/2 the battle. It's hard to give the show too much credit because the cop-procedural is such a gimme in terms of drama, and i feel like the shows that came before did most of the heavy lifting in terms of working out the format. Vic Mackey is a really compelling character though.

- The Office - B - Michael Scott is a lot like Homer Simpson. It's a careful balancing act to get him to be dumb enough to wind up in the crazy situations but capable enough to get out of them. or not be committed to supervised care.

i've got the 1st 2 episodes of Pushing Daisies ready to watch, but haven't yet.

I thought last night's was markedly improved over episodes 2 & 3 primarily because there was a lot more Devil in them. Also, I like Sock. And Ben had more depth to him as well. My big beef with the show is the girl. She's ANNOYing with a capital ANNOY.

So here's what Fox is doing to their Monday night lineup:

Josh Friedman, the creator of "The Sarah Connor Chronicles," has confirmed to the site the series will premiere Monday, January 14 at 8:00/7:00c on FOX. The newcomer will be bookended by the three-hour seventh season launch of "24" - Sunday, January 13 at 8:00/7:00c & 9:00/8:00c and Monday, January 14 at 9:00/8:00c (the show's regular time slot).

Latest rumor is LOST is staying on Wed. Maybe this will nail that coffin shut.

She does have nice shoulders though, Holli. That is what's important. But, yeah, nothing good is on Tuesday nights. I ended up watching something about the Dead Sea scrolls on National Geographic. I can't believe I;m saying this but I am tv'ed out.

The first 20 seconds of this deleted Office scene are LOL funny.

new bionica jones tonight. hope there's plenty of starbuck and romo lampkin.

PalmerEldritch said...

watched Heroes yet?

Stephanie said...

I knew she had to be on the list. She is the Ultimate Butt-Kicking Girl, imo.

Stephanie said...

I got a question for ya, Palmer. Are they trying to make Romo Lampkin look old enough to be the dead boyfriend's father? Is that why he looks so different?

memphish said...

I've watched the first 5 minutes of Heroes. I'm savoring it. Ha Ha! I'll probably get through it this morning and will be ready to rip through the board comments then. I liked the twist before the eclipse at least.

PalmerEldritch said...

i think Katee Sackhoff's pretty cool but Starbuck was one of the most annoying characters on tv for awhile.

remember the whole Starbuck/Apollo/Dee/Anders storyline? good grief, that sucked.

but Ms. Sackhoff seems cool.

PalmerEldritch said...

yeah, they are trying to make Romo Lampkin look old enough to be Bionica Jones' older boyfriend's dad. which is weird. just have him use his science-voodoo to rejuvenate himself. get rid of that weird makeup that's only there sometimes.

Stephanie said...

Yeah, Starbuck rubbed me the wrong way at first but she grew on me after a while. Now, I love her or I admire Katee Sackhoff's portrayal of the character.
Holli, you asked about what everyone else in the world thought of this season's Heroes. Well, the TV Guide podcast guys think the show is definitely in the Sophmore Slump. They also say, "Yawn."

Congrats GW - Brighton's a lovely place so enjoy!

Heroes & The Office were both the best so far this season. Andy singing and the Cornell deleted scene were just fine.

Still not decided on the new shows but Pushing Daisies seems to have good word of mouth. The new 'Brutish' TV shows are pretty lame (including season 6 of MI5) except the Serafinowicz Show.

[ally] said...

Pushing Daisies is awesome, Elias. If not for the story, it's at least a visual masterpiece. It's such a surreal set.

memphish said...

I'm interested to see how PD is tonight. Reportedly this is the first episode that cracked down on the budget. Also E!s own Kristin is in the episode.

And Ally, we may need to start a Dirty, Sexy Money thread on the board. I'm looking forward to it tonight.

Holli

[ally] said...

Sounds like a plan, Holli. I'm really getting into that show. Wednesday night has become a great TV night for me. Top Model, Pushing Daisies, Gossip Girl and Dirty Sexy Money. I'm interested to see where they take both Pushing Daisies and DSM.

[ally] said...

It'll be here before we know it, palmer.

the way i'm seeing it is, at least for the new season coming up, next thing you know it'll be halloween, then thanksgiving, then christmas, then new years, then lost.

Trevor McFur said...

And after Lost, then next summer, then fall of 2008 and Lost 2.0 ... so yeah, set yer TiVo!

PalmerEldritch said...

Ally and Steph,

your avatars kick butt.

memphish said...

And after you set those TiVos for fall 2008 remind yourself that it's less than 2 months until you get to buy the S3 DVDs. I'm pretty much going to have to have all my Xmas shopping done by 12/10 because I'll be in marathon S3 features and commentaries viewing come 8:10 am 12/11.

so who's gonna be watching Pushing Daisies tonight? I hope everyone has their pies ready.

Maybe that's too crude.

Thinks about it some more.

Jordan said...

I'll be watching it. It's my favorite new show this year so far. I'll be interested to see what Holli was talking about with this being the first episode with a scaled back budget. Holli, if you're reading this. What was the reasoning for that?

Other than PD, the only other new shows that I am still watching are Cane, and Palmer's favorite, Bionic Woman.

Cane isn't bad. It could go anywhere at this point though. Either good or kinda bad. It has some really evil bad guys in it that are very easy to hate. I don't know who the chick is who is sleeping with Dr. Eyeliner, but she is a biatch.

Bionic Woman, I don't why, but I keep watching it. I'm not overly enjoying myself when I do. But I dunno.

I've heard that Life is supposed to be good. Haven't watched an ep yet though.

[ally] said...

"I don't know who the chick is who is sleeping with Dr. Eyeliner, but she is a biatch."

She's the daughter of the man who's trying to take over their land and their crops. She's sleeping with him so that she can turn him agaisnt his family and I guess eventually take over everything.

memphish said...

Jordan, here's what I know about PD.

This is from Alan Sepinwall, a NJ TV Critic and he got from the LA Times. The episode referenced is Episode 2:

according to those LA Times stories, this was the last episode made before Warner Bros. tightened the budget and banned Barry Sonnenfeld from directing.

I'm still looking forward to seeing what happens tonight.

I'm sorry to hear that Cane is entertaining. I want my Dr. Eyeliner back!

PalmerEldritch said...

new bionica jones tonight! not that it's that great of a show. but its entertaining and always has a beginning and an end. sometimes it even has a middle. it's good ol' fashioned 80s/90s popcorn tv so far. which is refreshing when i'm waiting three weeks to find out if Peter Petrelli is going to open a box that may or may not have his wallet in it.

and i've been in a room with bionica jones twice. starbuck twice. and romo lampkin once. good ol' comic con. fiercely loyal to the comic con panels that i attended.

jordan, i havent had a chance to play for more than 5 minutes but there's a CONAN demo on the playstation store.

Stephanie said...

Sorry, Ally. I changed my avatar just before your compliment.
Been vaguely watching Cane. It reminds me of Dallas. I was afraid I didn't know enough about Sugar cane or ethanol to be able to watch. But not knowing anything about the oil business didn't keep me from enjoying Dallas.

Jordan said...

Steph, That's a good comparison. Sometimes it gets a bit too "soapy" for my tastes. But it's got some interesting sub plots.

Palmer, I briefly played the Conan demo. Kinda fun. Have you tried out the Ratchet & Clank one? It's pretty neat and has really nice looking graphics. The Simpsons game is goofy, but kind of fun as well. I look forward to Thursdays a ton now thanks to it being demo day for the PS3. That and all the NBC comedy goodness.

I swear I did not write this review of Heroes S2, but if you've been following my comments on the boards, I could have.

In further news, I read today where they are re-naming the spin-off. It's no longer Heroes:Origins, but they haven't announced a new name. They also announced that the guy who created The Nine and directed Big Fish is going to direct one of the episodes. (You can see all that in Chicago Tribune.)

Jordan said...

I'm not too big into ripping Heroes right now. It's just too fashionable. People love proclaiming a show coming off a hit debut season as having lost it when it goes through a sophomore slump. I mean, just look at all the dumping on people did with Lost. I'm not saying that Heroes doesn't have some faults right now. It most certainly does.

But a lot of shows suffer the same fate in their second season. 9 times out of 10 going into a show writers don't have a long term mythology or plan for beyond the first season. Reason being usually that they are primarily focused on the first season, so as to not get canceled and actually survive. In Heroes case, the creator Tim Kring had only planned for one season because he wanted each season to be it's own story. But once it became a hit, NBC wasn't about to let him dump all his characters for new ones.

I dunno. Maybe Heroes is always going to be this way from here on out, hit and miss. Maybe once they get re-focused and better implement a long term plan it will improve. Who knows. All I know is I don't think it's totally sucking right now as much as the popular opinion likes to think. And right now I can find a lot of parallels with our beloved Lost from back in the day. There were times where I wasn't so sure that Lost knew what it was doing and whether it was "losing it".

All I know is that my favorite show on tv right now is Pushing Daisies. How great was that episode last night? To me, PD is everything Reaper isn't. Similar premise. Solving goofy cases, guy likes the girl, and such. Good stuff.

memphish said...

Boy you're up early or late this morning Jordan.

I agree about PD. Last night's episode was fantastic.

As for Heroes, I hope it will buckle down on this photo storyline. If and when it does that I think it could be back on track. And hopefully the other things that are frustrating us, Irish Peter, 17th century Hiro, will tie in as well and in retrospect we'll be able to say "cool how they did that." I'd rather be Heroes loving than bashing.

Holli

memphish said...

Happy National Meatloaf Appreciation Day!

Holli

Jordan said...

Yeah, I fell asleep early last night.

And agreed. Get rid of Irish Peter and ancient Japan Hiro, or at least give us a point to them, and the show will be instantly better.

Trevor McFur said...

Ancient Hiro and Irish Peter both seem to me like obvious place-holders, stories to keep the characters in the show even though they're not really a part of the main story (yet). And they may turn out to be eventually, but when Hiro decides at the last second to not go back (even though his character has been very aware of his role in the big picture ... right now, the last thing that he knows is that he stabbed Sylar and then got thrown across the street by him; he doesn't know if Sylar was actually stopped, or if the bomb did or didn't go off ... wouldn't everything we know about his character suggest that he'd be trying to get back there ASAP to help, and to avoid polluting the timeline?), and Peter decides at the last second to not open the box, it just seems like they're dragging them out just for the sake of dragging them out. And the Claire story ... it's irritating to see her and HRG suddenly lying to and not trusting each other after everything that happened last season.

But I'm not giving up, we know that shows can right their ship if they stumble.

Trevor McFur said...

Wow, that was a fucking rant.

Johnny Ghostwatch said...

Frant?

elias said...

Heroes is still good entertainment but I'm also enjoying the popular backlash.

Is it me or is the Baseball post-season a bit disappointing?

Stephanie said...

Huh? I do not know of this post-season of which you speak. Movies, tv shows- oh and that other thing that's on the rest of the time. Sports? What movies are you watching, Elias? I'm watching Jet Li's Fearless for some reason.

Trevor McFur said...

I posted about that on the forum yesterday. 4 sweeps so far, and the two that haven't been sweeps have still had one team pretty dominant over the others. If Beckett can do it again and the Sox win tonight, then that series might get interesting, with the momentum going right back to the Sox at Fenway.

I'm sure that Boston fans everywhere loved hearing Ramirez saying that it's no big deal if the Red Sox lose tonight. But at least now we know that he knows that the Sox are in the playoffs.
