Ok, I need some serious computer help from one of our experts.

I have USB 2.0 installed on my PC. I've had it for almost a year. Out of nowhere, whenever I plug in a high speed device, I get the "This device can run faster. For a list of high speed ports click here" message. When I click it, it shows all my USB ports. Yet when I use them they are running as slow old 1.1 ports. Data transfer is totally slow now. I have tried to update the drivers, run a system restore to before the problem, uninstall the hardware and reinstall it, everything I can think of. And nothing has worked. Is there a computer genius out there who knows of a solution? If so, I would be very thankful. I've looked all over the internet and haven't found anything of help.

I hope all the Harry Potter dorks are having fun right now. I myself don't understand it, but if you are into that kind of thing, enjoy.

The original Scott and Steve Blogspotters...woohoo.

Don't forget Ryan, the other host.

I miss them. Come back fellas, at least once in a while.

i think everyone is missing the obvious. Scott & Steve = Craig & Dylan = Ben & Ralph = Aimee & Kim = Damon & Carlton.
I've known since Season 2.

Stephanie said...

I got a question for ya. Which looks worse? Chuck and Larry or Hairspray? Which will make the most money? Ok, that's two questions.

andrew. said...

i think "Chuck & Larry" looks like the worst thing ever. It's right there with "Shallow Hal" as a horrible, backwards attempt at social commentary through ugly, stereotypical humor.

"Hairspray" looks bad. i saw a couple of clips and John Travolta was terrible and distracting in under 30 seconds. I love the original John Waters movie though, and it's a good story. So even though i'm not a fan of musicals (no, i didn't really like the Buffy episode "once more with feeling"), it has to be 100x better than "Chuck & Larry".

The Norbit Law suggests that "Chuck & Larry" will make more money.

elias said...

Happy Birthday Trevor!

I'll see Chuck... because of Adam Sandler. Travolta in drag - no thanks. close call which will make more but I say Hairspray - it's had a lot of free publicity.

Transformers is out so I might see it tomorrow. We get Simpsons on Wednesday/Thursday too - that's a must-see.

Zodiac was incredible and Mark Ruffalo is now one of my favourite actors.

PalmerEldritch said...

i think Travolta is great for that role. an ultra-cheesy, annoying, campy role. just what he's good for. that said, i'll never see that movie. even if it does have Walken in it.

as for Chuck and Larry, it could be funny with other writers and actors. but the movie as is looks absolutely horrible. not even the Biel could get me to watch that movie. anyhow, she'll be up on youtube once the dvd comes out. right?

jordan, is it a PCI USB 2.0 card or is it built into the motherboard?

if it's just a PCI card:
do you have an empty PCI slot you can move the USB card to? if that doesn't work, what you want to do is figure out if a) it's the card, b) it's the software, or c) the motherboard. see if you can find another XP machine to try the card in.

hopefully, it's just a software screw up or a bad PCI card. it'd suck if it were a bad motherboard.

other things to try would to be to throw in another hard drive with XP or 2K on it and see if it can make heads or tails of the USB.

PalmerEldritch said...

actually, i'm not sure if USB 2.0 runs at 2.0 speeds on Win2k. in fact, i'm not sure if it runs at USB 2.0 speed on anything older than XP SP1 without special drivers.

so, assuming it's a PCI card, try a different slot. if it still doesn't work, try it in another machine if you can find one.

from a software perspective, if you have a PS/2 keyboard and mouse, blow away the USB controllers in the Device Manager and then restart.

did you make any changes to anything recently? upgrade the BIOS? install a new card?

oh. you can also rollback your USB drivers. maybe.

Jordan said...

Thanks Palmer. I'll try some of that stuff you mentioned. I don't know what exactly happened that changed this all of a sudden. Sure is annoying.

The following is a quote from Rainn Wilson (Dwight on The Office) regarding being nominated for an Emmy.

Well, you know, I think a lot of people were robbed, but I don't really want to get into that. But there are a lot of great actors who did get nominated, and I was really excited for The Sopranos, because I thought this last season of it was just about as good as television gets. And I'm excited to geek out and meet the guy who plays Locke on Lost, because he'll be there. I'm definitely going to track him down. I'm gonna stalk him.

Stephanie said...

I didn't take you for a musical lover, Andrew. That's why I asked.
Elias, I love Mark Ruffalo as well. 13 Going on 30, Eternal Sunshine. Just Like Heaven was the worst thing I've seen in a long time but he's great.

can't get enough Locke over the hiatus? tune in to the second episode of Masters of Science Fiction for some Terry O'Quinn goodness. TOQ's episode airs on the eleventh (Hulk Hogan's birthday) but the show starts on the fourth. looks like it could be interesting.

well - off to see Harry Potter #5 tonight - crossing my fingers for it to be at least as good as #3. Anyone else seen it?

Brian Kincaid said...

Hey Ya'll,
As you can see went ahead and Simponized myself, but I've never really seen a full episode. I know there's like, 400 episodes, but how would ya'll suggest I get into the show? Should I start with a certain series or what?

PalmerEldritch said...

brian, i think you can safely jump aboard any of the episodes. and there are 400 to choose from...

alternately, you could start from the beginning and try to watch them all before the movie premiere. which is probably physically impossible but still an admirable goal.

i'd at least watch a few episodes so you can get to know the characters before sinking $10 into the movie.

mb and potterites, who's finished the new book? it's a race in case you weren't paying attention. winner gets one of those discontinued vibrating Nimbus 2000 toy broomsticks from 2001.

/they don't really win one
//they really did exist

Brian! What are you doing?! Where are you tonight? I've been looking for you all over downtown Omaha!

Brian Kincaid said...

That's not cool.

TV's a small world. Bernard just showed up on Angel (season 1) as a big baddie. He's actually a little intimidating when he's not kowtowing to Rose.

mb said...

Welcome Brian Kincaid! Love your 'Lars phone calls!

Well, I don't know if I'm in the minority or not, but I thought that was the best Potter movie so far. Additionally, I am forced to also admit (embarrassingly) that I am only on book 4. So I went into this one knowing nothing. Really enjoyed it - i thought it did the best job so far of ramping up to the inevitable final showdown at the end of the movie. I also thought the showdown was fairly kick-ass. It may just be that it, expectedly, feels less like a young kids movie the older Harry gets. Good stuff.

this ppretty much sums up my opinion on Harry Potter

Who is the brilliant mastermind behind Brian Kinkaid? There's no way any human being has never watched The Simpsons. Let's see. Somebody with lots of time on their hands. Not Jordan. He couldn't pull hisself away from his ps3 long enough. Palmer's not at work this weekend. Hmm. I don't know who it is but I'm sure he is fabricated.

Seriously, I watched some episodes when I was like 8 or 9 years old, but I've never watched em as an adult, but for no reason really, 'cause it's my type of humor, I just never got into it, but I want to now, I'm afraid i'll be out of the loop when I watch the movie.
