Holli, i hope you enjoy KKBB. i really have this fear that people will hate the movies that i suggest then want to wish me harm.

I know of one listener that did not like one of Ben's Picks and i will fight that listener to the death, because he is not right. BRING IT CAMPBELL!

After being forced to watch Evan Almighty this afternoon, I'm sure KKBB won't be any worse than that. I've already planned to go to dinner with alcohol as soon as EA is over.

I'm now able to vote in the Great Debate. And it was with deep pleasure that I voted for Ben, having crushed Ralph this week. Not a fan of Superman? Move to Russia, ya Commie. Can't relate to him? You've never felt alone in the world, the way that Superman does every day when he thinks about his whole planet being destroyed? Sheesh!

p.s. There's a flaw with the poll that allows you to vote over and over again (& have the votes count). I voted for Ben 5 times, then felt guilty and went and gave 4 votes back to Ralph.

Ralph- said...

i do have to agree with ALL of you...Superman IS better than Wrath of Kahn!!

Ralph- said...

OH SNAP!! The Fix Is IN!

PalmerEldritch said...

admittedly, i was unsure of whom to vote for so i checked the result and voted for ben so there'd be a tie.

then we could demand recounts and litigation!

It's not a fix if both sides are equally capable of stacking the votes.

Trevor McFur said...

I have to agree that Evan Almighty looks pretty bad. I'm hoping that Steve Carrell can save it, though ... he's never not made me laugh. And I did get a chuckle out of him with the big white Noah beard.

memphish said...

Nice idea Jimmy. My only problem with it is in my experience my 2-year-old couldn't have given a crap where I was. I was either there or not. Still it's a good excuse to get away from scary Future Jack.

Plus it goes with the theory I've been toying with lately that Jack sacrifices everyone else on the Island to get himself and pregnant Kate off it. This would explain his suicidal reaction to Michael's suicide (I think it's Michael in the coffin) because he too sacrificed his friends in order to save only himself and Walt.

PalmerEldritch said...

Where The Wild Things Are? As a feature length film? I don't remember the book that well, but can the plot from the book take a movie to an hour and a half?

memphish said...

Reporting in on Evan Almighty. It didn't suck. In fact there were some quite funny parts. Steve Carell did a good job of not going too over the top. Wanda Sykes had a lot of funny lines. John Michael Higgins who I've always liked in Christopher Guest stuff was terrible.

The plot is simplistic, there's potty humor and a lot of animals and the special effects are good and the tense scenes are believably tense. The target market seems to be 8 year old boys and mine really liked it, and his mother was pleasantly surprised. Low expectations serve me well again.

-i had to work at work. looks like i missed a whole thread!

-Jordan good call on "Bus 174," an excellent documentary. i saw it soon after seeing "City Of God" (which is an amazing film) and they were a powerful pairing.

i highly recommend "City Of God" and also the TV series "City Of Men". both are 5-star material

-Speaking of 5-stars, looks like Netflix finally fixed the friends feature. now i can see all of the skinemax movies everyone's been adding to their queues.

-Holli - way to take one for the team. I remember seeing a 5 minute preview of Evan Almighty a few months back (after the Office? or Simpsons?) and it was awful. I have to admit that the new commercials make it look survivable but definitely nothing i'd subject myself to by choice.

-Stephanie - i really want a monkey pal. i guess i need to get a car so that i can get a trunk so that i can get a monkey to put in that trunk to fight my battles for me. i don't know why she swallowed a fly.

-Jimmy - i think Kate having a kid to get back to is a strong possibility. only 7 more months until we find out.

-i'm starting to think Aimee & Kim are the same person! Have we ever seen them on the blogspot at the same time? Can you imagine that crazy girl, alone, talking to herself on the podcast, adopting a canadian accent so that she can argue Jater vs. Skater? we're truly through the looking glass now people.

Andrew, I don't think you saw the question I posed for you.
Did Michael Moore blame our healthcare problems on the pharmaceutical companies ? There were a lot of anti-Michael Moore retoric yesterday at the convention I attended. People in heathcare feel attacked by him while they have the patient's best interests at heart. If this clickable link doesn't work, I'm never trying again. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I had it down pat for weeks.

Stick it in your queue- High Plains Drifter

PalmerEldritch said...

The Prestige is in my queue. Now, I'm stuck in a Netflix Temporal Dilation Field where I have to wait for the girlfriend before I can watch it.

She wants to watch but just can't find a time when we're both in a movie watching mood. I may have to borrow the brainwashing room in the Hydra Station so I can make her watch the movie.

I hear that David Bowie's in The Prestige so it's going to take all of my self control not to start singing "Dance, Magic Dance, Magic Dance! Slap that baby, set him free!"

/Jareth the Goblin King

Stephanie said...

David Bowie is fantastic in The Prestige, p. Christian Bale, not so much.

Stephanie said...

Christian Bale in The Prestige reminds me of this.

andrew. said...

Stephanie - i think Moore puts most of the blame on the insurance companies and our government's inability to work in our best interest. I don't think the Pharmaceutical companies get much of the blame at all.

Ralph- said...

See Palmer. whats the matter, how come you havent watched children of men yet. I dare you to watch a movie without her and send it back.

The only drawback to Netflix is waiting for your significant other to want to watch the same movie as ou. That is why i netflix "Guy Movies" and shit. but it is tough, cause stevi likes "guy movies" and shit. i also get the occasional good movie that i sneak a peak at while she is not looking. too bad all the email notifications go to her email. I wonder if stevi wants to watch Bride of the Monster with me.

Good luck palmer!

That being said, I thought he was awesome in The Machinist and Equilibrium. I think he overacts with his mouth in Batman Begins. I understand that being batman all you need is a mouth, but his mouth is like the "clutch cargo" bits on Conan O'Brien, Especially with that scene where Katie Holmes sees Batman for the first time in the train station.

memphish said...

Steph, I liked "Friends with Money" too.

I've watched more movies in the last week than in a long time, and my approach now is to watch them with the lowest expectations possible so that I'm pleasantly surprised instead of disappointed. I'm hopefully going to see "Knocked Up" today and hope my expectations aren't too high going in.

Top 5 least favorite moments of season three (you'll understand when you hear Jay and Jack)
5) No follow-thru with Nikki and Paulo's storyline
4) Bai Ling/poor direction of Stranger in a Strange Land episode
3) lame story of Jack's tattoos
2) slow start of the season/first 6 episodes were weird but season 2 got off to a slow start to me also
1) I have no other complaints for the season. Excellent season.

Top 5 favorite moments of the season
10) Juliet's introduction
9) the reveal that Sawyer is from Jasper
8) the reveal that Sawyer is a daddy
7) all the male bonding- Tricia Tanaka, Catch 22
6) Nathan Fillion
5) Michael Emerson performance especially in the first 6 and in The Man from Tallahasee. And the finale.
4) the Red Sox reveal
3) cage sex
2) the twist in Sun and Jin's flashback- Sun is the cause of her own misery
1) Nikki and Paulo's demise

Jordan said...

Holli, you are right. A key to enjoying movies is not having your expectations too high. I've made myself really not enjoy decent enough movies from expecting too much.

Trevor McFur said...

Here's my top 5/bottom 5:

Lowlights:
5) Sayid's plan in 'The Glass Ballerina' -- continuing the trend of poor planning from end of Season 2; I know that they're dramatic devices to put certain elements in place, but it's tough to take Sayid seriously as a bad-ass in the face of this kind of idiocy. Fortunately, he was completely redeemed by the end of the year.
4) The First Pod -- I didn't think that all of the episodes were bad, but as a whole, they were among the weakest episodes of the season, and focused way too much on K/J/S. I don't think that it's coincidence that the show started picking up steam again when the focus went back to the ensemble.
3) Eko's death -- one of my favorite characters; even 9 months later, his death still makes no sense to me. I know that AAA wanted off, so they had to do it quickly, but then why have a whole episode surrounding Locke saving him 2 weeks earlier? Eko's whole arc seemed to be about the vicious warlord finding his faith and humanity again ... why is he suddenly arrogantly unrepentant at the end?
2) Bai Ling -- I was going to say all of 'Stranger in a Strange Land', imo the worst episode of the season, but I think that Ms. Ling deserves special mention. For a show that usually has pretty strong guest stars, yikes was she bad.
1) Nikki and Paolo -- clumsily introduced and poorly planned, and falsely represented as somehow important to the overall mythology, I think that they really represented everything that could go bad with Lost if they had to stretch the show out indeterminately. Fortunately they recognized their error and killed 'em off memorably.

Highlights:
5) Tricia Tanaka is Dead -- non-mythology but still great, it highlighted what really makes Lost a terrific show, the character interactions.
4) The Rattlesnake in the Mailbox -- I didn't see it coming at all, and it opens up so many possibilities from now on ... just a great twist.
3) Locke gets defenestrated -- awesome ... I never thought that they could have lived up to 3 seasons worth of expectations about how Locke lost the use of his legs.
2) Locke/Ben interactions -- both actors are fantastic, but the two of them together ... wow.
1) (tie) Hurley saves the day/Sayid kills that dude with his feet -- this whole scene had me off the couch, jumping up and down, and yelling in joy.

mb said...

wow - 1st post in 10 hours?!? Get the paddles out and defibrulate this mofo :)

bottom 5 of season 3:
5) Paulo & Nikki - not so much for Exposé which I enjoyed on its own, but for the absolutly stupid-ass scenes that were written before it for them. I just couldn't believe that these were characters that Cuseloff and co. were TRYING to make interesting or worthy of caring about what the F happens to them.

4) Eko's exit. I know the writers didn't have a lot of choice since Triple A wanted out and they had to get it done - but it did feel pretty empty and thin to me for such a kick-ass character.

3) Under-use of Kate's backstory. It just didn't add much to the show for me, it seemed a bit like we could have seen what was important in one flashback and then had another flashback to use for a more interesting story (to me at least) like Sayid's

2) How many things is Locke going to blow up? As much as I think Locke is an essential and really interesting character - I got a little frustrated about being kept relatively in the dark about WTF was going on in his head as he blows up the Flame and Sub after imploding the Swan. He did however, have his tete-a-tete with Ben as well as his Man from Tallahassee flashback, which balanced it out to some extent.

1) The amount of time that was spent at the begining of the season showing the Others fucking with Jack, Kate, and Sawyer. I totally think it WAS necessary for us to get a peek into Others world, and to do it through Skack's point of view (is that TOO much of a name contraction?). I just got tired of feeling stressed out while watching Lost, which is how the whole captivity situation in the cages and the aquarium made me feel. It did however, make Jack's double cross doubly awesome. I was cheering.

TOP 5:
5) Jack's Double-cross on the Others in "I Do" - such a relief after watching Ben and co. fuck with Skack for 6 episodes. Suddenly Jack was back and there was something to cheer about.

4) Hurley - Tricia Tanaka episode w/starting the van, conning Sawyer into being decent, figuring out about Desmond - "that dude can see the Future", and need i say, saving the f-ing day in Through the Looking glass (followed by the "Hey Others..." comment on the walkie) has given the season a humor and sincerity without which the show would collapse under the weight of it's own gravity. And beyond that - he' has become a really influential character, going way beyond what people expect of his character I think.

3) Juliet/Elizabeth Mitchell - I do understand the ill-will her character inspires, b/c I felt the same way about Ben Linus until "Man Behind the Curtain" (I could barely stand him saying "Patience...Jack" back in "Glass Balerina"), but I think she is easily one of the most interesting characters and Elizabeth Mitchell plays it with a perfect mix of mystery, sincerity, and gravity for me. I enjoy most scenes she is in.

2) The Rattlesnake - didn't matter that I knew it was coming. Seeing Jack stand there as Kate drove away and the performance Fox put forward in the entire flashback blew me away, and left me stunned. Great storytelling, well written, well acted, well produced.

1) Michael Emerson - this man deserves an Emmy. Period. Kim and Aimee said something about this on TLI - that Emerson is the only one who could pull this character off. He imbues Ben with such a dichotomic mix of creepiness and authority. You can tell he believes in what he is doing and that it is for some greater good - but he looks and acts with a Hannibal Lechter-like calm creepiness that keeps you on the edge of your seat whenever he's on screen, my eyes are always on him.

Whew!

Did the blogspotters finally get lives this weekend? Or were we busy with our purchases from the Allisonville Nursery? I hear you have to get those things in the ground pretty quick.

Don't forget Bruce Campbell's show premiers this Thursday on USA at 10 pm Eastern. Bruce Fact #92 - Bruce Campbell battled Bruce Lee for the title of the One True Bruce. After Bruce Campbell mopped the floor with Lee's punk ass, Bruce Lee had to change his legal name to Dorkus Malorkus Lee.

And about that show LOST anyone give any credence to the theories that the pilot and/or Cindy were conspiring to bring Flight 815 to the Island?

Holli

Johnny Ghostwatch said...

the Sound of Drums didn't do it for me (although it bothered me much less the second time around).

Probably means I'll really like it in the future.

Enjoyed seeing The Orange Place, though, very attractively done.

For all we complain about the depictions of Brits on US TV it seems our lads can't do it either (let's ignore the US President taking limelight as the representative of the world - that does seem fairly likely), I'm talking more about the "American" kids watch TV near the end. We know they're Americans as they've got a Route 15 sign hung on their wall and one of them's wearing a Letter Jacket.

Actually, I think they might be eating popcorn and drinking beer as well...

I hope it pays off well, cos there's a lot of setup to kick into touch with only one episode left. UK TV isn't really in the habit of leaving a huge cliffhanger to be resolved in the next series, we like to tie it up as much as possible.

PalmerEldritch said...

it was OK, mb. the villain (though I like the character) was annoying in a bad way. i know he was supposed to be annoying but he was a little too JarJar Binks for me. when he was serious, interacting with the Doctor, it was pretty darn good though.

the weird techno music rave on the carrier was moronic. even if Mrs. Saxon did dance.

and, as always, Russell T. Davies brings billions of baddies out of nowhere to make "impossible odds." and, inevitably, the Doctor will find some way to defeat them all at once with only thirty seconds to spare. blah.

the whole concept is really interesting though and we're in a dramatic cliffhanger and whatnot. so, i'm eagerly awaiting the finale.

ghostwatch is right, all the Gallifreyan stuff kicked ass. gotta love Gallifrey. i practically did backflips when i saw the guy wearing the Gallifreyan outfits.

and did the President tell everyone that he was "The President-Elect." if you're the President-Elect, you're just some guy until you're sworn in.

i wonder if Nick Fury is going to sue their asses over the Valiant?

Johnny Ghostwatch said...

President-Elect was definitely a weird choice of words. Everything else in the episode says "President".

Not sure the Saxon arc stuff was done particularly particularly well. I love the fact that the drum rhythm is the iconic Doctor Who theme tune, but sadly Murray Gold's version of it doesn't actually do that - his just goes "dum-dum, dum-dum" instead of "di-da-dly-dum" (if you see what I mean).

Mostly over here we think that the Valiant is a cheeky wink to Cloudbase from Captain Scarlet:

Cloudy!

Another Brit sci-fi series with an indestructible hero.

Many times I was in full WTF mode watching The S.O.D. but on a second viewing, knowing some of the more mental things that were on their way, I relaxed a bit more.

Even the song (Voodoo Child by Rogue Traders, if you so desire) grew on me for two reasons:

1) it's a post-Tony Blair, media savvy Master, so he's likely to think of upping the spectacle. and

2) I'm not the biggest fan of Murray Gold, so anything that tempers his bombast is fine by me (although, do iTunes up his tune "Doomsday" from the episode of the same name last year as that's somehow excellent).

PalmerEldritch said...

anymore news on Davies leaving the show? good show runner, crappy Who writer.

Trevor McFur said...

Anyone catch The 4400 last night? So-so ep, imo. I really think that the show suffers when they're not focusing on mythology. I've also never been crazy about Kyle's character, and now that he has an annoying invisible friend, I like him even less. The bits with Isabelle were interesting, though ... does anyone really believe that batshit crazybitch isn't going to get her powers back? I bet those tests she was getting are really a way for the government to figure out a way to control her.

I miss Richard, too, I always liked his character. I hope that superhot Alana comes back at some point this year too.

PalmerEldritch said...

trevor, i'll be watching The 4400 on the DVR tonight. and Dead Zone.

Johnny Ghostwatch said...

I still don't get it. Rusty IS a great, intelligent writer with a superb mind for what makes great television and a fearsome knowledge and love of Doctor Who.

the only problem is the moment he tries to write some, it all falls off.

Actually, that's a bit unfair - he's written a large number of episodes, many of which are generally very good - but when he tries to tie up his more "grand plans" ones, he tends to cut himself a bit short.

I still don't think there's any official word on a possible departure. All speculation.

Trevor McFur said...

Palmer, I think that The Deadzone looks kind of interesting. Is it worth picking up this far into the game? I've also heard that it's one of those shows that they thing might get cancelled at the end of each year. Is that right?

PalmerEldritch said...

trevor, the first few seasons of dead zone were sweet. arc heavy but still mostly standalone. also, some really clever uses of Johnny's psychic powers.

subsequent seasons aren't as good. occasionally, there's a bad episode. but it's still usually enjoyable and has a pretty good cast. there's always a mystery, always psychic powers, and always interaction between the leads. the guest stars are usually pretty good.

5. Jack wuvs Juliet - i like the added drama of Juliet's character, even if Elizabeth Mitchell's weird expressions annoy the hell out of me, but Jack's blind trust of her was especially irksome.
4. take-a-shit lad and exposition girl
3. Ecko. Honestly, his character hasn't made any sense from half way through season 2 on. Does anybody know what phantom Yemi wanted from him? Show him the pearl? get him to push the button? confess? play with smokey? His death just cemented a bunch of screwy story threads.
2. the purge - while Ben's story was interesting, i had my hopes up for some full-blown, psych-rock, hipppy-mystic madness (see Jodorowsky's "Holy Mountain" for reference). Scaled down for TV, the Purge lacked a little of the oomf.
1. the flashbacks. Sun & Locke delivered, but for the most part the flashbacks felt like an obligation the writers were happy to get away from.

highlights of season 3:
5. Locke's tour d' kablooie - Sly dog played the idiot while wiping every last ounce of technology off the island.
4. Season 3 Jack vs. Ben - 'it's weird but i don't trust kidnappers' 'sorryboutcha spine dude, enjoy that painful death' 'whoops, i accidently on purpose botched that operation' 'here's your walkie talkie back, now let me rearrange your face a little'
3. Mikhail - i was prepared for the mysterious eye-patch guy in the monitor to turn out really hokey. Then i was disappointed that someone so awesome was so short lived. Now i can't wait for him to show up again to dish out more James-Bond-villain destruction.
1. 'remember when i told you that everything on the island had a scientific explanation? i lied.' I'm glad that the show embraced it's fantasy elements a little bit more while keeping things grounded in an internal logic. Desmond's flashes, the 'magic box', Jacob, super-sperm, Claire's wig... i welcome the restrained magicness of the island.

-Whoever was in charge of marketing "A Mighty Heart" should get fired. Until i listened to Filmspotting, i had no idea that it was about Richard Pearl. It just looked like terrible oscar bait with a shitty title.

Andrew, Angel's a good show, although imo not at the same level as Buffy. The first season is kind of so-so; like Buffy, it doesn't hit it's stride until years 2 and 3 (and, unfortunately, it had really turned into a great show when it was dumped by the WB after it's 5 season, I believe). There's only maybe 2 or 3 episodes where the stories overlap, and they're all pretty superficial overlaps. So you can definitely enjoy one without the other.

I've heard that "A Mighty Heart" is excellent ... unfortunately, it looks like it's going to be overlooked if the early box office is any indication. It's also not exactly the most uplifing material.

Palmer & Ghost,
Re: The Sound of Drums - I hear you on the insane odds - it certainly goes over-the-top and the dance music kinda took me out of the moment a bit as well. But basically I am a sucker for the grand finale type stuff in Who b/c I guess I have always kind of seen Who as a over-the-top kind of show (as many kids/family shows are), and the Doc generally gets it all sorted out pretty quickly at the end with a climax which is more fantastical than the rest of the story.

Huge Man-eating plants which swallow a mansion, a giganormous octopus attacking a chemical processing plant at sea, and a luminescent green ball of slime climbing up the stairs of a creepy lighthouse are some of the more crazy-ass climaxes that come to mind. I think part of the reason I watch is to see how crazy the situations are going to get.

That said - what indeed was up with the "president-elect" thing? That did take me out of the story.

Just checked my Netflix friends ... holy crap, Jordan and I are 88% similar. I think if it gets much higher I'm required to leave my wife and move to Seattle.

PalmerEldritch said...

Trevor, the first two or three years of Dead Zone were recommendable. Past then, it's occasionally as good as it used to be but I watched it more out of liking the characters and the actors than from being impressed by fresh new stories. The season premiere this year really shook things up and it will be interesting to see what the rest of the season will be like. I didn't catch last night's episode but will be watching tonight on the DVR.

When it's only an OK episode, it's like MacGyver or Quantum Leap but the hero has psychic powers. When it's good, they have inventive uses of the powers and do a lot of ominous foreboding on an impending future event. Again, the first few seasons were the best.

MB, awesome selection of Who stories. I'll have to check those out. I don't have too much of a problem with outlandish stories, it's more of the "Up the odds impossibly high and then resolution via a lever or temporary super powers." And I REALLY want Moffat to have more to do with the show. His stuff is FANTASTIC.

mb said...

Palmer,
I could not agree more about Moffat, the guy just keeps delivering the goods. I know he's at least supposed to write two more stories for Season 4, so we've got that coming.

Showed the laughing baby video to the family - good stuff. And I totally crack up at the Will Ferrell Landlord one too (couldn't show that to the kiddo though). For one more - I found Bruce Lee reincarnate in Kung Fu baby?

memphish said...

Good Kung Fu Baby MB. I hope you're planning on teaching those moves to The Deuce.

Palmer, thanks for the setup. I'm sorry life interfered with ability to take the 108.

Holli, Trevor set you up for the Kablamo. I came back from lunch, saw 107 posts and STABBED YOU IN THE BACK in my desperate quest for a Kablamo. :(

Trevor McFur said...

Snubbed!

Jordan said...

Trevor, 88%? It says 80% for me. That's weird. Is that possible? I had always figured it was one % for both people. Maybe it is slightly different on each side based on the movies you have or haven't rated. Interesting.

Jebus guys. When you go off on Dr. Who, I have no clue what you all are talking about. I just read through all that stuff not knowing what on earth you were even referencing. I thought it was something from Lost that I totally forgot about. lol.

As for the blogspot summer tv program, I have decided to start watching Six Feet Under finally. I've been meaning to for the longest time, but always went elsewhere. So far I'm really liking it. Great characters and hilarious darkly comedic dialog. Good stuff.

The other day somebody on here commented on never seeing Kim or Aimee on here at the same time. That got me thinking. For all we know they could be one crazy person. Just think of nutty an individual it would take to take on two very different personas and release a podcast with the two conversing together. I'm not saying it's likely, but it is possible. That would be like the ending to Fight Club. All of our minds would totally be blown. lol.

memphish said...

Sorry Trevor and damn you Palmer. Eh, no worries. I think I got 42 and 69 on this thread. I can share the wealth.

Click here to find out how Aimee in Little Rock is like Juliet or at least Elizabeth Mitchell.

Holli

PalmerEldritch said...

Good catch, Holli. Do you think we can trust Aimee? ;)

Trevor McFur said...

That's strange Jordan; I double-checked and it's definitely 88%. So that means that I'm very likely to like a movie that you already liked, and that you're slightly less likely to enjoy a movie that I already liked (I think that's a record for the number of 'likes' in a sentance). Maybe there's some little sub-genre that I like and you don't ... would still think that the percentage would be the same though. Weird.

elias said...

Just saw Apocalypto and it was good. Herr Gibson is getting better.

Unless something really decent on US TV jumps out at me I'm just gonna catch up on films this summer. I've realised how many films from the last 2 years have yet to be seen.

PalmerEldritch said...

Elias, seen The Prestige? Thanks to NetFlix, I can now recommend it.

Jordan said...

I'm going to have to check what all my friend's %'s are now. The algorithm or whatever it is that Netflix uses must be more complex than I thought. Interesting.

Trevor McFur said...

We have Apocalypto at home. Braveheart is one of my ATF movies, but unfortunately it's become a little difficult to separate Gibson the artist from Gibson the anti-Semite.

We watched Pan's Labyrinth this weekend ... very good, and more than a little creepy.

elias said...

Seen The Prestige and it was thoroughly entertaining - I like magic in films and Nolan did it well. Agree with the Bale hate. For some reason he can't do an English accent.

I'm a fan of Gibson the actor, he's 3 films away from being a great director and his politics don't interest me at all.

Jordan said...

I don't bother myself with what Mel Gibson thinks. If he makes a good film, who cares. I mean, Roman Polanski has made some really good films. Nuff said. And I'm sure that there's worse directors and actors out there when it comes to that stuff anyway. It's just that Mel was stupid enough to say it. So thumbs up to Apolcalypto? I was on the fence about that one. Guess I'll check it out.

[ally] said...

Both The Prestige and The Illusionist are great movies in my book. As for the similarities in Netflix, I seem to have 62% similarity with Jordan and Trevor is following somewhat closely behind with 57%.

I remember Steph was my friend and now she's missing, I don't know when/where/how I lost her. Please be my friend Steph :)

Ralph- said...

OK, so let me tell you why i love stevi so much...

I just got a text message from her that said, " I think calling someone a 'Sci-Fi Original' is a pretty good burn!"

For those of you familiar with Mansquito, Alien Apocolypse, Attack of the Sabertooth, Slipstream and so on, know how awesomely horrible it would be to call someone a SciFi original!!

Trevor McFur said...

Normally I don't have a problem separating the artist from his beliefs & politics. Sometimes, though, the beliefs are offensive enough to carry over. Not that it's going to stop me from watching the movie, though!

elias said...

It is very bloody and visceral, good action, the suspense works well which is rare these days, strong acting.

beware people who can't read subtitles ;)

another captioned film I saw today was "My Best Fiend" (1999). some excerpts:

Opening

Temper

Murder Offer

Was Cube 2 a Sci-Fi original? I'm not sure. But I did watch it on Sci-Fi. And man did it suck.

How come no one mentions "The Sheriff" as one of Lost Season 3's worst moments?!?! Please tell me I'm not the only one who hated her...

Jordan said...

Speaking of pics. When are we going to get to see a Ms. Holli avatar?

PalmerEldritch said...

jonathan, GOOD call on the sheriff. of course, i'd seen her as a horny middle aged woman on prisonbreak so i was just glad that she wasn't feeling amorous on Jizz Island. wait... Hydra Station Island.

what the hell is the Hydra Station's name? Splooge Island?

we may need the lovely Kim and Aimee (be they one or two people) to make an official ruling.

PalmerEldritch said...

ha! successfully got my friend to watch LOST. he's midway through season 2 and his favorite character is John "Hotlips" Locke.

/ok, i added the nickname Hotlips

memphish said...

I'm building the mystery as they say Jordan. Lately a lot of people tell me I look like Cybill Shepherd which is ironic since I live in Memphis and she's from Memphis, though I'm from Alabama, not Memphis. Back in the late '80s/early '90s, people thought I looked like Mrs. Seaver. Yes I did have hair kind of like that.

Holli

[ally] said...

Wow, Holli, way to keep us in suspence...

Jon said...

Palmer--I forgot that she was the "cougar" that T-Bag was trying to get with! I seriously don't understand her Lost character. I guess people can just put that whole episode on their least favorite list, and that should take care of Bai Ling, The Sheriff, "You taste like the ocean...washing the day off you?", Jack confronting Cindy (I still don't understand that), and Jack rubbing aloe on Juliet's tramp stamp.

PalmerEldritch said...

yeah, jack and juliet must have bonded over having crappy tattoos.

Bai Ling stinks it up. anyone know if she's a better actress in Chinese?

and, yeah, she's icky looking. ew.

Trevor McFur said...

The sheriff character was bizarre ... they introduced her in that episode like she was someone important, then she was never seen again. Maybe they realized that everyone hated her so she 'disappeared'? You would think if they wanted her to go, they could have had her be the one that Hurley hits with the bus or something.

PalmerEldritch said...

I really hope we don't get a Sheriff flashback episode.

memphish said...

Good point Trevor. You'd think the Sheriff would be on the "round up the usual preggo suspects" A-team on its way to the beach. Maybe she's more of an Andy Taylor to Tom's Barney Fife, staying out of the way, hanging out on the porch with her guitar with that old lady from A Tale of Two Cities that we never saw again either.

Here's my LOST Question for the day: Are there still just 2 sides like in backgammon, or are there more now? And who is on whose side? And does that make them light or dark?

Holli

Trevor McFur said...

I think that there's multiple sides at the moment: the Lostaways, the Others, and the boat people. But, I bet that the Losties and the Others will be joining together against the boat people next season.

I kind of figured that the random Others from 'Tale of Two Cities' that we never saw again were just log-carrying, space-filling Others. The Sheriff seemed like she was going to be important ... didn't it seem like she took over running the show while Ben was laid up? Funny that she'd completely disappear after that.
