Makes me want to go watch the finale for the fourth time. Or is it the fifth?
Back to the Fight Club discussion: I knew going in what the big twist was. It didn't keep me from enjoying it. I just wonder if I would have figured it out, not knowing. No, what am I thinking?
The movie makes me think about Columbine and all the other tragedies. What's up with our boys? Why don't other countries have these problems? They have videogames too. We can't blame it on games.

JonJon said...

Well Fight Club is a complete satire on those with extreme materialistic issues. It shows the ridiculous nature to those are considered fundamentalists. If you enjoyed the movie I have to say that you need to read the book. Much more insane than the movie, but both are equally good.

Sweet! Awesome Kim. Thanks so much. You are the coolest.

Hey, whose the sexy gal in your pic? ;)

elias said...

Can't wait to listen to the fancy new TLI - cheers Kim for selecting a coupla my playlist requests.

My Canadian ex hated Fight Club - she thought it was a totally male oriented film and she was right. Still a classic IMO. Jonjon - love the book too.

Films I haven't seen that everybody else has: Any of the Harry Potter series.

Jordan from the 206 said...

I haven't seen a single Harry Potter movie and don't plan to do so.

JonJon said...

Elias-
Have you read any of the HP books?

PalmerEldritch said...

i third the harry potter hate.

PalmerEldritch said...

man oh man, it's good to have TLI back. we missed you two.

especially since you two have cool hair. good going!

stephsmith said...

I just don't see the connection between materialism and violence.

stephsmith said...

I tried the first Harry Potter. I hear you should skip the first two and go right to the third.

JonJon said...

"I just don't see the connection between materialism and violence."

The first half of the story tells about the only way to evolve is to start from the ground up. Tyler Durden describes how materials in our lives pull us down. So in his warped mind he believed that these materials can't live in the same world as everyone else so he decides to destroy all those things. Be in mind that this is the other half of a mentally unstable man. The second half of the story gets into more of the satire of fundamentalism. How people follow another mans goals without question, and do terrible things without a second thought.

JonJon said...

It would have helped my side if I had watched this recently so I could put down some quotes.

PalmerEldritch said...

i like movies with robots.

and explosions.

t-dot kim said...

*phew* finally TLI has our episode out, I guess Switchpod sent it to iTunes before I had had time to post the new thread :(

elias said...

Jonjon - never read the Pottski books. There's too many great books I haven't read yet that take priority.

Steph - I agree it's a massive leap from being anti-materialistic to joining a fight club to becoming a terrorist of Project Mayhem, but it's not meant to be a realistic book. It's a dark fantasy novel using a disturbed male outsider as its narrator/ protagonist. Its overt idea is that men have been emasculated by modern society.

The film is a work of genius purely on a technical level. and I never saw the twist coming.

elias said...

Jonjon - the narrator rejects his mother and all female influences to rediscover his masulinity:

"A generation of men raised by women. I'm wondering if another woman is the answer we really need."

I like your analysis of the second half of the book. and he does destroy the material things to be reborn now I think about it.

trevor mcfur said...

I may have to bump Fight Club up the queue. Right now we have 'The Queen' and 'The Constant Gardener' at home waiting to be watched. I also have Dune, disc 2 of 3, which I've had since March; that's on the chopping block for me to pull a Ralph and send back unwatched. I also have 'The X-Files', season nine, disc 3. I decided to rent all of the X-Files episodes, starting like 2 or 3 years ago; I didn't start watching when it was on until the 3rd year, and I gave it up after season 5 or 6. But wow, getting through these final 2 or 3 seasons is like a death march through the desert ... a battle of wills between my stubborness to see it to the end, and the sheer awfulness of the remaining episodes.

Jordan from the 206 said...

Hey, I got a question for all the Brits out there. What's up with you guys annointing celebrities as knights all the time? What's the point of this? America doesn't go out and and annoint Brad Pitt an honorary cowboy.

I'm joking really. It's just that I was reading the front page of the Seattle Post Intelligencer and there something about Paul McCartney where they referred to him as "Sir Paul". It just cracks me up how we always refer to people like, "Sir Anthony Hopkins" and "Sir Ian McKellen". I think the US needs to start making honorary cowboys, so people round the world have to refer to "Sherrif Brad Pitt" and "Deputy Johnny Depp". lol.

Em&Em said...

I'm new to the blogspot but have been listening to Dharmalars and TLI for awhile now. I love them both so much and am glad to see there's a new TLI available.

I had to weigh in on the Fight Club discussion. I loved Fight Club (I am female, by the way) and started reading Chuck Palahniuk after seeing that movie. I really liked his style. However, after reading three of his books (Lullaby, Choke and Invisible Monsters), I find that I can't take him any more. What seemed innovative and fun in the first book I read, seemed old and tired by the third. I guess I would still recommend him, but I wouldn't recommend reading all of his stuff.

trevor mcfur said...

Do you have to be British to be knighted? And if you are knighted, are you given a sword and a steed?

Jordan from the 206 said...

Welcome em&em. I agree, not all his books are great. An old roommate of mine had that Invisable Monsters book, so I decided to give it a go. Ugh.

PalmerEldritch said...

yeah, they seem to give away knighthoods to just about anyone nowadays. meh.

elias said...

Welcome to the 'spot Em&Em. I read an interview with Chuck Palahniuk and he is a very weird, dark ex-junkie.

Jordan - the honours system is an awful corrupt thing for establishment type people (like those grand dames of the London stage you mentioned).

Sir Ridley Scott deserved his though.

trevor mcfur said...

I think that it goes without saying, too, that if I was knighted, I would expect to be called 'Sir' at all times too ... even by my close friends and family.

But actually, being called 'Sir' with knighting has always kind of reminded me of those celebrities who do commencement addresses and are awarded honorary doctorates, but then go around referring to themselves as 'Dr. so-and-so' (Bill Cosby, this means you).

elias said...

you have to be British to get a gong - though Christopher Guest is a member of the House of Lords thanks to a hereditary peerage.

Americans honour celebrities in their own way - a DUI and a mugshot ;)

PalmerEldritch said...

hey! the Cos has a real doctorate degree from UMass.

/don't fuck with the Cos

PalmerEldritch said...

why, when googling 'cosby sweater,' is the Google ad at the top of the search results for Victorias Secret? is there something about Dr. Huxtable that I don't know?!

trevor mcfur said...

D'oh! Here I am inappropriately slamming the Cos (and even worse, I'm from Philadelphia too). I looked on wiki and thought that all of his degrees were listed as honorary. Thanks for the heads-up palmer.

Em&Em said...

Did anyone read Haunted? I only read some of the stories. I unfortunately read the first one which was so completely over the top gross I couldn't believe what I was reading.

Elias, I didn't realize Palahniuk was an ex-junkie. I guess he's really getting rid of some demons in his writing.

Palmer, I would have never associated the words Cosby sweater and Victoria's Secret in a million years. That could be a serious scandal in the making. : )

PalmerEldritch said...

never read any Chuck Padufhkashfasdfdsafic (how the hell is that spelled?) but my friend is a huge fan.

for all my ex-junkie literary needs i read Philip K. Dick who used to drop pills like nobody's business. that dude was seriously screwed up. now, he's thoroughly dead. "A Scanner Darkly" is one screwed up read and what's even more screwed up is the list of all his friends he used to drop acid with and whatnot. half of them are dead and the other half had psychotic breakdowns. great stuff.

/yes, i stole my blogspot handle from a Philip K Dick book

Em&Em said...

palmer, I recognized your name as a Philp K. Dick title. I haven't actually read that one, but I like what I've read by him. I think my favorite was the Clans of the Alphane Moon.

stephsmith said...

One of these days we'll find out what Palmer's real name is.

trevor mcfur said...

Palmer, you may have stolen your name from a Philip K. Dick novel; I'm even worse, 'cuz I stole my internet name from a video game that I've never even played.

PalmerEldritch said...

"My name is Henry Gale! I'm from Minnesota!"

/ok, maybe not

PalmerEldritch said...

wow. Trevor McFur wins for obscure references!

JonJon said...

I enjoy Philip K. Dick as well, the first book I read of his was A Scanner Darkly.

Jimmy said...

I'm in a minority with Fight Club. I found that as soon as the twist was revealed, the film became a great deal less interesting. I'm one of the few who thought it better for Tyler to be real.

Brits do dish out Knighthoods like there is no tomorrow. I do however equate "The Medal of Freedom" (Paul Bremer III, George "I knew the intelligence was really bullshit and now I've written a book about it" Tenet) to be an equal croc of shit.

PastPablo said...

*loves the harry potter films*

Can't wait to hear this episode!

PalmerEldritch said...

jon jon, kablamo that 42nd post you just did!

and keep on reading PKD, they only get weirder and mindfuck-ier. i really liked "The Man in the High Castle," "Flow My Tears, The Policeman Said," "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep," and i totally thought that LOST was going to be an UBIK ripoff. which it still could be.

oh! "Martian Time-Shift" is all kinds of screwed up. that was a disturbing book.

Ralph- said...

Score Nerd Alert!
Kim, the back to the future score was done by Alan Silvestri.

Jimmy. i have this feeling that when fight club came out it was perfect for my age deomgraphic. i love fight club and i find that a lot of people my age are fans of it as well. I was 22-23 at the time.

elias said...

the Silvestri was my request - like Dangerfield he don't get no respect.

Favourite junkie writer - William Burroughs - heavy stuff indeed. Never read PK Dick but I will one day.

Jordan from the 206 said...

Speaking of Fight Club, I'm watching another great David Fincher movie as I type, Seven. "What's in the box?!" I better not hear anybody on here say they haven't seen this one.

Check this out. It's pretty cool. Guy playing one of my favorite songs on a ukelele. Just try to ignore the goofy dancing the guy does while playing. At about 2:40 in it gets really good.

While My Ukelele Gently Weeps

Ghostwatch The Great said...

I can't help but feel responsible for the final delay of TLI. I still don't know if I made it on after all, but I'll get a chance to hear it soon.

Twists in films? Charade, please! One of the twistiest plots I've ever encountered but so easy to follow because it's only the one thing (the true identity of one of the characters) that keeps twisting.

'tis wonderful. It's no "The Wizard of Speed and Time", though

Anonymous said...

I don't think so ghostwatch. A little birdy told me that the girls just recorded yesterday.

trevor mcfur said...

Nice video jordan ... that dude really gets into it. Not sure if it beats Star Wars on the accordian though.

Seven is a great movie ... an absolute modern classic. Depressing as hell though.

JonJon said...

Has anyone seen Zodiac, I wanted to see it but never got to it.

JonJon said...

oh and I'm going to travel back in time 11 posts to Kablammo!

PastPablo said...

wow lmao @ the accordian guy. sweet jesusjizz!

Jimmy said...

I loved Se7en, and this is another reason I was disappointed in "Fight Club". I really love David Fincher and expected more...

Ralph, you may be right about the demographic for fight club, and the fact that I was in my mid 30's when I saw it. I don't know...maybe it was the company I was with, but I just didn't get into it that much.

Benjamin said...

Charade is outstanding. I really dig that film.

As for PKD, my favorite (of what I've read so far) is Clans of the Alphane Moon. I keep waiting for Hollywood to make a kick ass movie based on that book. Some day.

stephsmith said...

p, I need your help again. I lost my recycle bin again and need the steps to recover it. I blame Vista. And another technical question. How do I import an entire CD to iTunes instead of doing it one song at a time?

apPaullo said...

Razzle Dazzle Jizzie Jizzle, bitches!

t-dot kim said...

Steph, I know Palmer's real name... ;)

Jordan from the 206 said...

Jonjon. I saw Zodiac. I thought it was great. But I can't recommend it to everybody. It's a very different style film for a bunch of reasons. It's kinda slow and about 3 hours long, so your average movie watcher is probably gonna get bored along the way. The girl I took to see it feel asleep on my shoulder. But I thought it was great. I'd recommend it to most people on this blogspot seeing as many of us who post on here have similar tastes.

FutureAlly said...

Do tell, KIm. Don't tease us like that. Or are you waiting to see if Palmer's willing to pay money to keep that information secret?

stephsmith said...

Kimberley, you are one stone cold fox. Yes, I'm trying to charm Palmer's name out of you.

JonJon said...

Jordan, I'm not what you say the "average movie goer" I'm much more. I love art house films so if it's slow it doesn't bother me a bit.

stephsmith said...

Thanks, p. I'll know next time Vista eats my recycle bin to just google it myself.

MB said...

Steph,
RE: importing a whole CD into iTunes:
I assume importing is the same on the PC and Mac versions of iTunes (PC users correct me please if I'm at all wrong) - so there should be at least 2 ways to import a CD (in my experience) -
When I put a CD in a button appears along the bottom of the iTunes window that says "Import CD". Alternatively, you could select all of the songs and drag them to the left side of the screen where "MUSIC" is listed . I don't know if it's different on a PC, but on a Mac, to select a whole list of items like that, you click (once) on the first song, then Shift-click the last song in the list (i.e. press the shift key and hold it while you click the song)

PalmerEldritch said...

don't worry, steph. i don't mind looking it up. i just don't have Vista at home yet. it's a pricey upgrade for my PC so i'm sticking with XP for now. eventually, i'll need Vista for games though.

mmmm... sweet sweet computer games.

Jordan from the 206 said...

Damn. Palmer and Trevor's name aren't really Palmer and Trevor. That's a disappointment. I feel like I don't even know you guys any more.

Oh and by the way, Steph knows my real name. ;)

Jordan from the 206 said...

PalmerEldritch said...

speaking of computer games, all i've been playing lately is Civ4. any good games come out in the past six months or so?

I really enjoyed the first half, then kind of lost interest. I think it could have been 45 minutes shorter, and I'm fine with a long film, usually.

Hey Aimee,

Now that the season is over, perhaps now is a good time to tell us why you thought you knew Jack was going to die?

What do you say?

Nota.

PalmerEldritch said...

hey, what do you all do while listening to podcasts?

listen at work? in the car? working out?

i was big into the new Rainbow Six game for awhile so i'd listen while hunting down terrorists in Las Vegas. so, i've got a bit of a Pavlovian response to Kim and Aimee where i think of going through an abandoned theater fighting terrorists.

jimmy, i like Civ4 and am eagerly awaiting the next expansion but i severely stink at the game. one day i'll figure out how to manage my cities. hopefully.

and archipelagos suck in that game. i do random everything and always get stuck with special horse units and archipelagos so they're completely useless.

SadAce said...

Hey...I loved fight club too...and I'm around the same age as you too Ralph (30). I still like the movie even on subsequent viewings now that I know the twist.

I never play computer/video games anymore...If I had the free time, I think I'd really like to get a Wii. They look pretty fun. The last games I really got into were Diablo and Diablo II on my Mac. Those games were fun and playing them alone in the dark could be really creepy.

I don't remember if one of you on here showed me this...but did you see this yet. Disturbing and funny. Poor Kermit.

Finished listening - this is actually really nice to have a delayed podcast. It's nice to think about Lost some more - I don't want to let my ideas/theories die away! I'm clinging to every thought I get like water in a desert!

Kim and Aimee - I'm sorry I was totally NOT clear when I sent Mac's "comment" to you that it is NOT part of spoilers and is a comment FOR you two to listen to (no spoilers whatsoever) - apparently Mac had something he wanted to say to you two ;) But thank you for making sure it got in there!

MB said...

RE: the podcast -
Could not agree with you more that the role of Ben really can only be played this successfully by Emerson - he SO better get at the very least an Emmy nomination. If he doesn't I'm with you Aimee in the rage - we should go and burn some shit down - I'm sure Ralph and Ben would help (and the Emmy's are in LA right - so perfect).

- I really like Aimee's idea of why Jack is suicidal - that Ben's prophecy (of "every living thing" on the island dying) comes true - and continues OFF the island. Jack is crying his eyes out, because he keeps seeing all the islanders die one by one and he feels responsible for it.

- RE: who is trying to get to the island. It certainly seems logical that it is Hanso/Dharma or Widmore OR BOTH. Lostpedia's entry for Widmore industries mentions that the "Bad Twin" book references Hanso and Widmore having some kind of partnership (along with Paik Heavy Industries incidently). I seem to remember someone theorizing (or maybe I read it somewhere) that maybe Widmore construction were the ones who built the hatches - not sure about that.
I also really like Aimee's idea that perhaps there is something of a battle going on between Mittelwerk and Hanso, and perhaps the Others' apparent allegience with Mittelos Bioscience means that they are alligned with Thomas Mittelwerk - although for some reason (that I don't have the energy to think about right now) it seems a little strange that Richard Alpert and the Others would align themselves with Mittelwerk, since he seems to be such a f-ed up guy, dealing in shit like organ harvesting. But maybe the Others are THAT f-ed up too.

If it is Widmore trying to get to the island, it would totally make sense like you guys said, that they may have found out that Penny was looking for Desmond, and then used that as a way or a reason to actually get to the island. Maybe Charles Widmore found out about the elecrtomagnetic trace that Penny's Arctic guys picked up and used that to locate the island and sent Naomi in. I'm so spitballing here.

Excellent show K&A - thanks!

SadAce said...

MB, I agree with you...

"- I really like Aimee's idea of why Jack is suicidal - that Ben's prophecy (of "every living thing" on the island dying) comes true - and continues OFF the island. Jack is crying his eyes out, because he keeps seeing all the islanders die one by one and he feels responsible for it."

Aimee's theory is awesome and I really like it. I have a feeling it may be something like what Aimee said...but also where the universe is course correcting for the people that should have died in the plane crash, but the island kept alive. Now that they are off the island, they are all dying. In the flash forward we saw, maybe Jack and Kate are amoungst the last few left...and he still loves Kate so much that even if he's not with her currently, he still feels he needs to protect her from her fate. The island is the only place to be out of the control of fate/karma/whatever.

I love it.

MB said...

I like that Sadace - the islanders are dying off the island because they were cheating destiny on the island. Sweet. This is of course, going with the idea that everyone (or at least more than Jack and Kate) made it off the island.

Big Train only ran for 2 seasons (1998 and 2002) and, being a sketch show, was hit and miss but it had some great sketches and some fine British comic actors - Simon Pegg (who most of you know now thanks to Shaun of the Dead), Mark Heap (Jesus)
and Kevin Eldon (Satan). Kevin Eldon is massively underrated in Britain.

Podcast check in:
finished:
-13 hours of Lost Lowdown. lots of commuting this week and i chiseled my way through it. My approach to Lost is very similar to Justin's, and so we share many of the same thoughts and theories, which makes it pretty easy to listen to.

-The Lars - great first episode guys.
I agree with Ralph that Wrath Of Khan isn't a very good movie, but i think Ben won the argument because people getting evil brainworms in the ear and Spock going belly-up doesn't sound like the good guys always winning. I think you should have taken the tactic of declaring "This movie sucked. It's Star-Trek and it's a battle between William Shatner and Ricardo Monteban." and just let the clock run for that last 55 seconds.

-The TLI - a fine cap on the season. I like Aimee's 'Final Destination' theory as well. I have some questions: Are Jack & Kate spared of the island curse? or are they expecting to keel over at any moment? Does Jacob call you to let you know that you have 24 hours to live? Did Michael & Walt die in this manner?

-General blogspotness:
- Got the 1st season of Buffy The Vampire Slayer from Netflix. I'm not digging it. Should i give season 2 a chance? does it feel more substantive later on?

- Liked palahniuk's 'Survivor' & 'Fight Club' and the short essay collection, but really disliked his other novels.

I'm a big Buffy fan. The show really starts to come into it's own in the second season, particularly the latter half. The first season is just kind of an introduction to the characters. The third season is fantastic too, but if you're not hooked by the end of the second, then you probably never will be.

Eias, how come I've never heard of Lawrence Kasdan? I loved The Big Chill.

Ghostwatch The Great said...

Ghostwatch's Fight Club? Perhaps. I yet all over the US and Canada (the guy who played Simon Pace, the target of my particular ire in that recording is from Toronto but attempting a Mancunian accent) doing poor accents by way of televisual revenge.

Justifications:

* I can actually do a bit better than that if I relax into it

* Believe it or not that was recorded improvised in one take, flipping between the voices and then dragging them about later rather than the way I'd have preferred, scripted and with both voices recorded separately. But hey - I'm ruining it for anyone who might slightly care.

BUT - I do have a point about that bloody guitar.

I remember being too young to enjoy the Big Chill so I'll have to give it another watch. I like westerns but don't really rate Silverado.

I just IMDBed him and I like Grand Canyon (1991) a lot.

Red Card!

Red Card to tie-dye shirts. If you're younger than 50, you've really got no excuse to wear tie-dye. Just stop it. Stop it now.

Red Card to the Olympics. I can't muster enough energy to give a crap about the Olympics. I don't care who the Gold Medalist in ballroom dancing is. Your logos always suck and your boring as fuck. The only good thing about you is that you ripped off your theme song (in the US) from Brisco County Jr which was a damn good show thanks to Bruce "The Chin" Campbell and show-runner Carlton Cuse.

Red Card to tie-dye shirts and the Olympics. Get the hell off of the field.

Dancing With the Stars Winner: Apolo Anton Ohno--he rocks.

Kids In The Hall--also rock.

PalmerEldritch said...

but was Apolo cool because of Dancing with the Stars or because of SpeedSkating? it's cuz the dude can dance, right?

oh. and curling is cool. some of those curling girls were cute. :)

it's crazy how many kids in the hall are now disney characters. Dave was in that ant movie, and kevin was in Lilo and Stitch. i think Bruce McCullough did a guest voice on the Lilo and Stitch show too.

no idea why Scott "Buddy" Thompson hasn't been a Disney character yet though. ;)

/can't remember the Chicken Lady's name... Mark McKinney?

Probably because Robin Williams has first dibs on all of the 'flamboyant' voice roles.
Thompson is hilarious though, and i hope working steadily as a writer somewhere.
(looking him up in IMDB he's steadily working in cameo roles, including voice work on the Lilo & Stitch TV show. As much as i dislike Disney, they've always been out ahead on gay rights.)

Ghostwatch - that mp3 was great! Gave me a good needed laugh! And I actually thought the accent rocked (true - not pure Iowa, but a hell of a lot better than yanks do w/the Brit accents generally). Rock on.

Just read that Rachel Mcadams will play Claire Abshire in the film adaptation of "The Time Traveler's Wife" - Alls I'm saying is, somewhere in one of the tear jerker scenes, they'd better synch in Coldplay's "The Scientist". Apparently Brangelina bought the rights to make the movie also. Promising so far...

Ghostwatch The Great said...

Hey, thanks, MB - true I coulda gone for a more Iowa drawl but the idea of a poorly researched voice was half the joke. My deeper "slacker" voice is more realistic, but realism wasn't my goal. I mostly wanted to pick somewhere not too obvious. Delaware also came to mind.

The large percentage of US TV that gets shown over here means a greater level of accentage being picked up by British kids.

But we can't complain too much - for every Keanu Reeves in Dracula, there's a Tim Roth in Reservoir Dogs.

MB said...

Oh man - Keannu in Dracula - I had wiped that from my mind until just now. Right on par with Kevin Costner as Robin Hood.

demetrius underwood, tom brady caught teh ghey?! i hope he doesn't get some dude pregnant.

the guy knocked up bridget moynihan and is now banging gisele. i doubt he'd even have time to be putting the wood to guys too.

keanu reeves in dracula had one redeeming quality. he was in a scene with the Bellucci. but the rest of that movie was pure ass. and not cute womanly ass but big nasty plumber ass.

i've now seen Pirates 3 and can safely say "wtf?" entertaining though. and i was squirming in my seat during the electric guitar part. ugh.

trevor mcfur said...

I love that clip Jordan, although my I still like, 'Lost ... On an Island!' better, I think (would have linked it, but I couldn't find it.

I think that deduction leads to Emile being the Lost diva. There's only 3 white women on the show, I believe. Whatever you think about Juliet, I don't think that anyone would say that Elizabeth Mitchell is the weak link among the actors. Evangeline ... maybe, but she usually comes off as kind of shy about her celebrity status.

Hey y'all! Jay and Jack's Lost Vidcast is out.

I have a question for everyone. Do you know of any men who are getting married and opting to take their wife's name? My former co-worker's ex-husband is a cop and took his new wive's name. As you can expect, my former co-worker has enjoyed immasculating him with this. If I've heard of this in my neck of the woods, I suspect it's common in other parts. Anyone?

PalmerEldritch said...

yeah, i've heard of that. also knew a guy who was just up and changing his last name to something cool when he got married.

strikes me as a tad weird. but i guess i'm just a patriarchal jerk!

stephsmith said...

wife's name- I meant

stephsmith said...

You know, we're traditionalists down here.

trevor mcfur said...

I have an ex-girlfriend who insinuated that if we ever got married, that she'd like me to change my name (my last name being fairly common and hers not, and me having a brother and she being an only child). That relationship ended with me standing in the middle of a highway in Atlanta watching her drive away after being thrown out of the car. So, needless to say, it never became a real issue between us. But there was no way I was changing my name.

stephsmith said...

lmao

stephsmith said...

I was pretty content with my last name. I don't like the fact that my first name and last name now start with the same letter. But it would have never dawned on me in a million years to ask him to take my name.

FutureAlly said...

wow trevor, you paint quite a picture. lol.

trevor mcfur said...

Jordan from the 206 said...

I have never heard of a guy taking his wife's name. And I life on the douchy "progressive" west coast. Weird. Seriously though. Not that there's anything wrong with it. But what kind of woman does it take for her to make or want her husband to take her name? I can understand if she might want to keep her old name, but to get the guy to take hers? She's gotta be a bitch.

And I just got the biggest laugh outta Trevor's story about the highway and his ex-girlfriend. Not so much because of the story, but because I thought it was Steph telling it. I guess I looked at her pic from the post before and just went with it. I was a bit confused to say the least. lol.

trevor mcfur said...

I would wholeheartedly agree with the sentiment of your first point, Jordan. :)

MB said...

Steph-
My wife and I both hyphenated our names - I can't remember who's idea it was. It's not something I ever thought I would have done, but we talked about it for awhile and we both liked it the more we thought about it.

MB said...

We actually did talk about whether to take her name or mine, and I think that's how we finally came to the hyphenated idea.

stephsmith said...

mb, when you got married, your wife had already established herself in her profession, right? I can see why women with careers wouldn't want to cause confusion with name changes. But I think this chick here just wanted to show her dominance or like Jordan said, just wants to be a bitch.

stephsmith said...

I sure am glad you left-siders have finally woken up. It was quiet around here for little while.

MB said...

That's true, she was in Law School at the time, but actually, she was pretty willing to change her name - combining names was really just an idea we liked.

PalmerEldritch said...

MB's wife's maiden name was Optimus and his last name was Prime. it was a given that they'd just combine them.

andrew. said...

a lot of my friends have been getting married lately, and they all get really cagey about the last name issue to the point that nobody has any idea what they decided on.
I don't even know how to refer to my sister-in-law.
I think it'd be cool if people went the combination route. With all of the bennifer, brangelina, skate, jam... stuff, we're all well versed and i think it would make tracing family trees more interesting.

andrew.

MB said...

Steph - re: your co-workers ex - am I understanding that he took this new wife's name but didn't take your co-workers previously?

Em&Em said...

I haven't heard of anyone taking the wife's name only, but I had heard of the hyphenation thing before. I think that's a nice idea. I also heard of one couple where the man changed his name to something completely different and then the woman took that name.

MB said...

lmao Palmer,

we are naming our kids Roller and Combat Deck and they are literally like apendages to us

stephsmith said...

Correct, mb. This is something this new wife talked him into doing. This is the first I've heard of. On Filmspotting, Sam combined names with his wife. He was Sam Hallgren but is now Sam Van Hallgren. I thought it ws strange when I first heard but have since gotten used to the idea. It's cute. Just in case he needed my approval.

PalmerEldritch said...

it's slow today :(

Jordan from the 206 said...

I might get a bit of flack for saying this. But I think that a lot of "women's rights" and "equality" stuff is just stupid. Much of the time it's just an excuse for bitching or getting your way. I can understand in certain things like the work place and where equality is important. But more and more women expect to have everthing exactly as men. Why does every little thing have to be taken as a slight? Why can't it just be a certain way because that's the way it is? Women in the work place want to wear business suits. Ok, why can't I wear a dress? Ok, I am just kidding there.

But like the name thing for example. I really don't see how it is so demeaning to a woman to take her husband's name. People didn't have any issues with it up until just recently. If you are a guy and you don't have a problem with it, cool. That's awesome. More power to you. But I have friends who have gotten into bitter arguments because the girl didn't want to take the guys name. That's just stupid.

IMO, people in our "progressive" society are way too hyper sensitive and way have way too of a "I want mine!" mentality. I'm not just talking about women here either, so please don't label me as a woman hater. I'm talking about everybody. Our society is based on the things we don't have or the things others have. I dunno. It's just stupid.
