W00t! I'm back. Hope none of you said anything compelling on the last thread 'cuz I didn't read it.

My LOST rewatch is stalled until I clear off the DVR from being out of town. We actually went over 1 whole week with no TV and limited wifi.

If you ever get the chance to spend a June in the Zion/Bryce Canyon/North Rim of Grand Canyon area do it. It was a fantastic vacation and I'll eventually get some pictures up on Facebook. I wasn't sure what to expect from the area given that it's high dessert, but the scenery was spectacular and a lot more lush than I expected. We were also lucky that it was cool and wet so that we got tons of wildflowers. So take a hike!

Holli, I doubt you missed anything. I know I said I was moving in with Jordan because I follow @getrespiratoryjobs on twitter and found a position at the hospital where Jordan was born. The day before I found a job in Orlando. The day before that, Oklahoma City. Not too interested in that one other than I'd be near Oklahaimee. I don't know why I even bother. I'm never leaving this crap-hole state.:(

PalmerEldritch said...

welcome back, holli!

You can hear Kim's epic SYTYCD thesis here as well and Ryan and I chat about numerous things including of course Buffy.

Palmer's new wardrobe.

Also, bugger. The podcast is out. You can now all hear how bad my voice is... :/

mb said...

WTF r you talking about Ryan - you sound great :)

scrdmnkydst said...

It sounds weird to me. I dunno, I guess I don't like hearing my own voice.

Awesome/hilarious Mexican soap opera cat fight!

The highlight of it all is the move one of the girls does at 1:13.

Jordan said...

I wish someone would've killed Sun in season one.

PalmerEldritch said...

re: cat fight

glad the brunette won.

i've never been a big fan of Sun. or at least i dont remember being one.

claire was pretty cool before all she started doing was nagging charlie.

looking forward to catching up on my homework.

Here is the the counter video to the one from the other day.
Gina Carano choking out a tv host.
While I'm sure it's not exactly a hoot. I much rather be this guy than the one choked out by the Brazilian chick. ;)

mb said...

Wow Herlihy...so you're a boobs kind of guy - lmao

RE: Sun

Wow - can't go there on the Sun hate. That marriage has pretty deep issues that stem from both parties and it remains to be seen whether the "sins" of their shared past can be overcome at this point or whether those two are simply doomed to be apart (whether or not you want to see it as karma or the island's will or whatever). I think it's a mistake to see either of those two as being the "bad guy" - I see the question as whether they, as a duo - are going to survive.

PalmerEldritch said...

jordan, now that's David Carradine's kind of girl.

scrdmnkydst said...

MB - yeah i am. but not in a freaky pervert sort of way. but in a "oh, these are really good cushions" way.

Awesome catfight! All that was missing was Dharma whipped topping.

Jordon:
That. Was. Awesome! The catfight totally made my day! I'm gay and even I thought it was kinda hot. And am I a pervert for wanting to see some spitting and hair-pulling? The brunette starts it and when 'El Guapo' comes in, he even tells the blonde to take a hike! Loved it. American soaps cannot hold a candle to that kind of gold...

PalmerEldritch said...

we should get Gina Carano to guest on that telenovela.

Jordan said...

That would be a great idea.

Yeah. Mexican telenovelas are pure awesomeness.

Jordan said...

Listened to Steph's latest podcast. Good job yet again. A couple thoughts:

- Why is Kim doing a Lost podcast? It clearly is not her favoUrite show on television. lol.

- Ryan/Herlihy/Monkeysack's rant on Robert Pattinson was hilarious and awesome.

- Ryan, I wouldn't think about giving Steph crap about her accent. You have such a different/interesting accent to you that by the end of listening, I no longer noticed Steph's. Now maybe I've grown used to it. But it is usually quite noticeable to me. But juxtaposed to you, she sounded as ordinary to me as any west-coaster. lol.

- Really? More Buffy talk? At this point, I think the show needs a title change. Something like "BUFFY and other things w/ Steph". :P

Kelly Jo said...

I love the moth!

Stephanie said...

Jordan, I wasn't going to talk about Buffy at all until Ryan forced me to.
Ryan has a northern accent that reminds me of this(NSFW language. If get the feeling northern UK is a lot like the southeast US.

Stephanie said...

That is the same telenovela that's on every time I'm eating at the Mexican restaurant.

PalmerEldritch said...

more buffy talk???

hrmm...

do you talk about other stuff with ryan? or just buffy?

Stephanie said...

The Buffy talk is at the very end only because Ryan felt left out since I've talked Buffy with everyone else. He's a fan. As is most who's given it a chance.
Palmer, we talked about E3, SYTYCD, Big Brother, what Ryan is going to be when he grows up, and such. I think I took the part about the Burberry factory, the coal mines, and MOST of the talk about his family out. Take a listen. I had a ball recording with him. For some reason I was in a giggly mood. I should have taken out all my laughing.

Steph & H,

Just finished your podcast. I also thought the Twilight/Robert Pattison stuff was hilarious! I also don't get why all these kiddies think he's so "handsome". I think he's so fugly. I also thought the Aimee/boob discussion was pretty funny as well.

Good stuff.

scrdmnkydst said...

I actually hate Robert Pattinson so much.

I just noticed that the Link Bar says that ben does a podcast with dylan called the lostiles...hmm, because i am pretty sure that Ralph and Craig just put up a podcast entitled The Lostiles!!

I'll have to agree with you on that one, but my dislike isn't just limited to him, I don't see the draw to anything Twilight related.

Also just started listening to Stephs latest podcast, mainly to see what all the fuss is about with Ryans accent, and I have to say there's nowt wrong with it, to me at least. If it is weird then so is mine, because I don't live too far from him (Blackpool) so i'd say my accent is similar to his.

memphish said...

Kim you've got to do a weekly SYTYCD podcast. Your call was awesome and I want to hear more of your rundowns. And Ryan you're voice is lovely.

There was a part about boobs? Dangit, I must've skipped over it. You know, when I was skipping over the Buffy and dancing talk. :P No offense. But it might as well be people talking about root canals and the dmv. I'll have to go back and find the boob conversation.

Jordan said...

Steph, You're watching Buffy for the 3rd time over the course of a couple months! That isn't healthy! lol.

Is there such thing as Whedonaholics Anonymous? Prob not seeing as all of them would need admittance. :P

I'm not knocking the Whedon fans. Like Palmer said, different strokes for different folks. I quite liked Firefly. And he wrote a pretty good arch on Astonishing X-Men. It's just that the Whedon zealots are INSANE!! This isn't a commentary on Steph by any means at all. She just seems to be in love with Buffy. But the average fanboy/girl on the net. Really, they are scary.

Exhibit A
Exhibit B

I think his stuff is good. It's just I don't think it's as earth-shattering as the minions make him out to be. He could literally crap on a stick and air it on Fox and they'd watch it. Oh wait, I forgot about Dollhouse. (rimshot)

scrdmnkydst said...

...

What I said about Steph's accent was an off-the-cuff comment in jest. I thought that it was pretty obvious... but ok.

Jordan said...

Pssshaw! Talking about wanting to correct her like she was some kind of Ethiopian child who just learned the language. Jest my arse. ;)

Finally listened to the boob segment. Steph, I'm guessing you no longer have the "clean" tag on the podcast. If not, you might want to. With Ryan talking about jizzing on and sticking his face in Aimee's boobs and all. Lol.

And I couldn't help but listen to the "Robert Pattinson has a face like a foot" rant again. Seriously, that made me laugh out loud. And I don't do that too often with podcasts. Herlihy dude, I think you have a calling as the British Perez Hilton. I got an idea for a podcast. "Ryan Slags Off Ugly Celebs". I think it would be massive.

scrdmnkydst said...

I ONLY WANT TO PUT MY HEAD IN AIMEE'S BOOBS BECAUSE THEY LOOK COMFORTABLE.

Not in a sex way. they just look really comfortable, like a really squishy pillow.

scrdmnkydst said...

Also, I don't have a problem with ugly people who are identified as celebrities. all power to them. I just have a real big problem with Robert Pattinson. Not because he's proper goddamned fug, but because he exists.

Also, I don't ever want to be compared to Perez Hilton. His massive tantrum about allegedly being hit by will.I.Am is pathetic and boring.

Jordan said...

I agree with you on Perez Hilton. I wouldn't mind if he found a way onto Spencer Pratt's speedboat before it gets lost at sea.

Stephanie said...

Jordan, it's a testament to the faith fans have in Joss' writing that they would want to save the show before it aired. His writing is phenomenal. The great thing about him is he was never accustomed to having to deal with network involvement. He had complete control of Buffy.BTW, I'm watching Serenity at this very moment.
Ryan, is "Joss'" grammatically correct?
Where is Andrew.?

scrdmnkydst said...

"Joss'" is completely correct.

Jordan said...

You know who also has that kind of faith in their obsession? Twilight fans. Blind, mindless faith isn't anything special. No one showrunner, movie director, screenwriter alive is worthy of unconditional praise. Some of the best do some crap stuff every now and then. So when you see people who are so biased that they fail to realize this, it makes you question just how discerning they are. Again, I'm not knocking Whedon. I just don't see him as some sort of demi-god. Also I think he is a total idiot for going back to Fox after being screwed so badly the first time. Same goes for Mitch Hurwitz with AD. It's like they suffer from battered wife syndrome.

scrdmnkydst said...

If you have listened to Steph's Buffy podcasts, you'd know that she doesn't think that everything he touches turns to gold. In the last two podcasts, I'm sure she hated at least half of the episodes from each season.

scrdmnkydst said...

That sounds like I'm being a proper gobshite. I didn't mean it to.

Jordan said...

I went more than out of my way to distance Steph from the mindless Whedon zombies earlier.

Chris JC said...

Ryan hates summer.

Discussed.

Jamie said...

Haha, you might be one of the only people in this country that's pissed off about the weather at the moment. Personally I love Summer, the hotter the better for me. Any cold weather, rain wind or owt like that just makes me angry...

scrdmnkydst said...

I detest summer with a passion. I seriously think I've got Reverse SAD.

Pollen, hot weather, 4 hour long nights.

UGH.

PalmerEldritch said...

i think i hate most weather. i'd be a great candidate for instellar travel.

PalmerEldritch said...

or living in Hawaii and being independently wealthy.

memphish said...

The best weather in the world is San Diego, near the coast. 70 degrees year round, no bugs, I'm not sure about the pollen. I've been lucky that pollen hasn't been one of my main problems.

Summer is probably my 4th favorite season as well. Fall is my favorite. I really like winter 'cuz here they're mild, but I like sweaters though I do get a touch of SAD if it's too grey for too long. Spring is pretty though that's when any allergies for me kick up. And summer is too darn hot too much of the time. For example, today is nicer than yesterday because at 9 am it was only 89 degrees not 93. Our heat wave needs to break.

Holli

PalmerEldritch said...

Winter is my least favorite because the roof must be raked, the driveway must be snowblown, the deck must be shoveled, the furnace must run almost continuously, the car gets stuck in the snow, everyone must be bundled up in hats and gloves, and everything is covered in three feet of snow.

Also, there are these great ice storms which knock out the power for days on end. Yaaaaaaaay.

PalmerEldritch said...

oh. and San Diego's weather does seem amazingly fantastic every time that i'm there.

scrdmnkydst said...

I bloody love Winter. The days are proper short and it gets dark at 4pm. amazing. and it's cold, so you have to wear big coats and gloves and scarves.

And when it's raining. sigh. There's nothing like walking about in Winter in the rain while listening to depressing music. And the people who have fake tans look like total idiots because they look like traffic cones in a sea of black and grey. Being pale and afraid of attacking bees and hungry seagulls in winter is proper FTW!

mb said...

RRB - wow - no that is not me - wish it was. I've been meaning to pay a visit to the viewaskewniverse and the forum for a while - looks like I need to come up with a different handle or be MB2 (or whatever number is available).

Jamie said...

No no no, that's what I hate about winter, having to wear all scarves and shit, it's just extra faff in the morning. I prefer being able to just just put on a t shirt, some shirts and go.

And don't even get me started on rain, i've actually not gone into uni on some days because it's raining outside and I can't be arsed going outside! Rain just pisses me off!

scrdmnkydst said...

Oh but i love the rain! The rain is awesome. I love going to uni in the rain because it means that i don't have to do anything with my hair. That's a 20 minute time saver at least.

And scarves. How can anyone not love a really good scarf!? Personally, I've got 5. I love scarves and gloves and stuff like that.

Jamie said...

I've got nothing against scarves, i've probably got about 10 (even though I only wear about 2), it's just such a palava getting dressed up for winter.

Jordan said...

Halfway through Band of Brothers. I thought it was slightly distracting when Simon Pegg and James McEvoy made brief appearances. But that was nothing like Jimmy Fallon showing up dropping off supplies. That completely took me out of the moment. Was as if he was edited into the show as a spoof for his show or something. lol.

Chris JC said...

Pagg's accent = slightly embarrassing. Still, not as bad as Tim Roth.

I like greyer, colder weather. The wife likes brighter, warmer weather.

Recently when we had the freak big snowing, I celebrated the ed of a particularly crappy shift of work by deliberately going out and trudging through the falling snow while listening to "The Visitors" by ABBA, their most downer record.

It was great.

Jordan said...

Funny you mention Pegg's accent. I don't remember it much because I think he had maybe two lines. But there are some really bad American accents in this series. Much of the minor and side characters are played by British actors as it was filmed over there and I'm assuming by law a certain portion of the cast and crew needed to be local. There's a couple guys who sound so cartoony. As if they studied John Wayne movies for their research.

It's interesting watching British actors do American accents. Because either they can do it nearly flawlessly and have American viewers respond, "He's British? Really?" Or they can't do one at all. It's like the ones who can't do it get so distracted with trying to do the accent, that they forget that their main job is to act and show emotion. IE - Michelle Ryan in Bionic Woman. I'm sure it's the same thing the other way round with American actors. Just interesting to note how much of a skill it really is that it makes that big a difference in an actor's performance.

Jordan said...

Another example of a terrible accent. James McEvoy. Yikes. His accent in Wanted was so bad.

scrdmnkydst said...

I must confess, James Marsters does the best English accent even though he's from the States.

Chris JC said...

i think the use of Brit actors in projects filmed here is just to cut costs rather than any tax break thing.

And, I think before my fellow Brits get stuck in, I think we can all acknowledge the terrible truth of the following:

Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins
Keanu Reeves in Dracula
Kevin Costner in robin Hood: Prince of Thieves

I think regardless of where an actor hails from they can either do accents or they can't.

I like James Marsters' one too - as Spike it's more stylised than, say, accurate but he does a much more convincing one in his Spike flashbacks.

Oh no! I'm talking about Buffy! ABORT ABORT!

scrdmnkydst said...

I'd completely suppressed Keanu Reeves' accent from Bram Stoker's Dracula.

From what I can remember, Winona Ryder's wasn't too good either...

PalmerEldritch said...

anybody seen Transformers 2 yet? any good or a POS? and what's with those two stereotype bots i keep reading about?

Jordan said...

I don't think anyone ever said that there isn't plenty of shitty American actors doing British accents. The point was that regardless the accent, there is a fine line between being able to pull off an accent and not. Mainly that the ones who can't are too caught up in the accent to pull off a decent acting job. And the ones who can do so effortlessly. Geez you Brits are so easily offended. lol.

I want to see Transformers 2: Transform Harder. Not sure if I will right away though. I still haven't seen Star Trek, Up, or The Hangover. I hear that there is extra robot fighting scenes in the IMAX version. Scenes specially shot with IMAX cameras that will not appear in other theatrical cuts. How much this will be exactly, who knows? Still, I don't like the whole different versions of films thing. Nothing more than greedy production companies and theaters trying to squeeze every last dollar out of the viewers.

Jordan said...

So the Oscars are going to be doubling the amount of best picture nominees, bringing the total up to 10. I dunno about that. There aren't usually 10 films a year that I would consider "Oscar worthy". To piggyback onto my "the studios are evil" comments from my last post. I'm sure this is just the studios wanting to have more films labeled "Best picture nominee: Shrek 4". It would be really nice if everything in life didn't always feel like a giant con job.

Jamie said...

It might not be so bad if they bumped it up to maybe 7, but 10 seems a bit OTT. I'm not sure I could think of 10 Oscar worthy films from last year. Not to mention now a best picture nomination is esentially half as prestigious as it used to be.

scrdmnkydst said...
This comment has been removed by the author.
scrdmnkydst said...

I read on twitter that during the action sequences in Transformers 2, each IMAX frame took around 72 hours to render.

That sounds a bit ridiculous.

memphish said...

Well 10 makes it even with the number of movies nominated by the Golden Globes right? I'm assuming the hope is that people will actually watch some of the nominees if the Academy gets its nose out of its high and might Oscar ass and nominate something released somewhere other than in Oscar mailers.

I've still only seen 1 of the 5 nominees from last year. I've seen 2 of the musical and comedy category from the GGs.

I hate summer. I'm back from the waterpark and am completely drained of any energy. Autumn is the best season. The 100 degree weather is gone but the ground is still warm. Unlike spring when the ground still thinks it's winter.
Morgan saw Year One and is yet to comment at all about it. Not a good sign.

Jamie said...

I don't think i'll be checking it out, I got bored of Jack Black after School of Rock, not to mention it's only got 19% on Rotten Tomatoes, making it the worst reviewed film so far this summer.

On the flip-side i've just finished watching Up (I'll not mention how...) and it was just as good as I expected it to be. Yes I am a Pixar fan boy, but deservedly so, there's no one else around who comes near to rivalling them. Also props to Giacchino for another great score.

Also, completely unrelated, Lost characters Simpsons style.

PalmerEldritch said...

jamie, i feel pretty "meh" about a lot of Pixar and i thought that UP was excellent. unfortunately, it's advertisements have been awful so far.

"uh... it's Pixar and an old dude puts balloons on his house."

which is integral to the story but is merely a piece of a much larger, and more compelling, story.

Jamie said...

Yeah, clearly Disney thinks its easier to just target teh Dreamworks audience and stick all the funny bits in the trailer, then hope they recommend it to their friends once they see it. Seems to be working so far $230M+ makes it the second highest grossing film this year, just $10M short of Star Trek.

scrdmnkydst said...

I love Pixar films... but do they really have to be making sequels? They're not a sequels sort of studio. Toy Story 3, Cars 2, Monster's Inc. 2. Too much!

Jamie said...

I'll let them off with Toy Story 3, only because number turned out so well, and I reckon there's enough story for one final film. Cars 2 however seems to be purely financial, seeing as Cars merchandise is Disneys biggest money earner in years. Monsters inc 2? Really, is that needed? And where the hell is The Incredibles 2, the one sequel everyone actually wants.

scrdmnkydst said...

In other news. The photos from the 7th Tim Burton/Johnny Depp collaboration look stunning and I so can't wait.

I see all the old pictures of Michael Jackson in the Jackson 5 and all I can think of is that it's really sad. I actually get pretty pissed off at his family and the people around him. Amazing artist who was allowed to screw himself into a freakish existence and become so f-ing out of touch with reality that he mutilates his face (I AM making the perhaps dubious assumption that ALL of his face work was NOT neccessary for his supposed skin condition) and would dangle his child off the ledge of a balcony. Pretty tragic.

I'm hearing mixed reviews. Some say Krasinski isn't doing anything different than Jim Halpert. Some say it really speaks to where they are in life. Some say it's filled with annoying characters. I can't wait to see it.

My DVR only got half of Burn Notice last night.

Thank God Asuka went home. She stunk.

memphish said...

I was happy with who went home on SYTYCD. This past week the show started to remind me why I don't like these kind of shows. They had almost everyone doing dances that in no way, shape or form conformed to the strength of the dancers dancing them - Randi and Evan and Melissa and Ade being the exceptions who rose to the challenge. After being so good in week 1, most of the routines the last 2 weeks have not thrilled me and it's getting a bit tedious. I don't think I could watch this show without recording and fast forwarding, especially the Thursday shows.

Holli

t-dot kim said...

I agree with the choices on SYTYCD. I was cheering when Johnathan went home. Seriously? He shouldn't have been in the top 20. Last week he had an amazing week--but Week 1, he did a Samba (I think), his specialty!! It was terrible.

Anyway...

I'm deeply saddened by the Michael Jackson news. I was a huge fan of the Jackson 5 and his solo stuff growing up. Sadly his image was and forever will be tarnished by all the molestation charges, baby dangling, skin bleaching etc, etc, etc. I spent most of the evening in shock.

Oh...and fuck TMZ and Perez Hilton. Since when are they "credible" news sources. That pisses me off.

- Is Miley Cyrus really crazy? I'm pretty unfamiliar with her whole phenomenon, but what i've seen of her, she just seems to be a teen living a sort of extraordinary life, with a weird dad, and seems relatively well-adjusted despite that.

- i'm so happy to be in an airconditioned place today. last night my house was so hot that i couldn't use my computer to get any work done because it kept overheating, and i couldn't sleep.

- i ended up watching Weeds & all of Nurse Jackie. Weeds could use a lot more funny this season. I like the addition of Jennifer Jason Leigh though. I stand by my original assessment of Nurse Jackie. I love Edie Falco, but that show is really bland and predictable.

Agree with you Holli - forgot to give Ralph and Craig props. Loved it.

- Ron D Moore's "Virtuality" airs on the Sci-Fi network tonight. It seems basically like 'what if holodecks existed in the revamped Battlestar Galactica universe.' I really wasn't interested except that Clea Duvall is in it.

oh wait. can we kill R.Pattz instead of Miley Cyrus? Please?

It can be my birthday and christmas presents combined!

Isn't Virtuality on Fox?

Yeah, it is on Fox. Not only that but Fox is airing it even though they passed on the show. They are just burning off the pilot as a movie. That in itself is reason for me to have zero interest.
Here's an article about it.

And yeah. Miley Cyrus, why very annoying isn't anywhere near the league of crazy and screwed up as Britney and Lohan. Miley is just overly successful and gets to live as an adult and for all of us to see it and be annoyed by it. The other two are train wrecks.

It appears that Doctor Who was with Jackson when he collapsed.

Too bad he couldn't have just reversed the polarity of the neutron flow on MJ's lifepath about a decade ago.

I think we've solved the mystery of Jackson's face - he's always been the same guy, but he keeps regenerating.

Just re-watched Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid and let Kiddo watch it for the first time. It was filmed at least in part in the Zion area where we just went on vacation. Etta's homestead in particular is this ghost town, Grafton, that's about 15 miles from Zion.

I hadn't watched the film in quite a while. What an odd film it is and it would never, ever be made today. The way they use music is horrific. It's mostly absent and when it's present it's this awful, awful stuff done by Burt Bacharach. And this is not to rag on him, but in the Bolivia bank robbing montage it is beyond shitty. And music is completely absent where today it would exist in great quantities. There are also a couple of very long sequences that would never make it into a movie today in that form.

It's interesting how much movie making has changed.

I've never seen Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

Morgan said Virtuality looked like BSG. I said there's a good reason for that.

I hate Perez Hilton's guts and have ever since the Miss USA pageant.
