Sorry Dharmalars, don't mean to steal your thunder by posting the same day as you have a new podcast.

Don't hate.

Anyone want a playlist?? I'll post it if you do...

...and yeah, this was recorded over a month ago. Aimee and I are recording this weekend, and I promise it won't take THAT long to post it

And w00t! Thanks KIM - an f-in hour and a half of TLI goodness. Nice! Listening now!

I like Aimee's breakdown of the seasons:

1 = basic drama/realism + mystery
2 = Religious
3 = Historical (island history)
4 = Sci-Fi

certainly some truth to that

Wow Kim

If I wasn't a regular listener...I'd say someone is sounding like (dare I say it)...a Skater?...

Wow! I still haven't heard the dual threat MB/Mac double bill karaoke that the Dharmalars update appears to promise, and here is TLI to distract and tempt my ears away.

Someone has a VERY short memory. I believe it was Aimee who said after 'SNBH' that Kate's reaction to Jacks' surgery proved that she truly loved him...... and now Kim and Aimee both have Kate going back to the island for Sawyer? No frickin' way. Kate loves Jack, happily said yes to his marriage proposal before Jack went understandibly nuts. Again, why all the Jack hate?

ABSO-FUCKING-LUTELY! That's awesome! Would that be intellectual property of NBC Universal? B/c if not, THAT should be the next shirt. I can put the graphic together if needed.

t-dot kim said...

MB, I'd have to say I'm a Jater at heart, but the Skater in me is coming out. (twss, right Ally? I'm not sure :P)

Robert, the whole Skater/Jater thing for me--arrrrgh!!!! I think it was the intent of the writers to have Jack and Kate be the big LOVE story of the series--but I think that the actors didn't pull it off quite as well as the pages intended. Personally, I think that Saywer and Kate have a better on-screen chemistry than Jack and Kate do. At the end of season 1 I would have put my money on Jack and Kate ending up together, but now I'm not so sure.

t-dot kim said...

Oh yeah, MB--I'm all about new TLI shirts for season 5!!

Also, I've been hiding out since I hadn't edited the podcast, but with nothing hanging over my head I can post here without guilt. Sadly, it's Comic-Con weekend--who's still here??

andrew. said...

i'd like a TLI shirt that says "Namaste Bitches!"

Robert said...

Sadly, it's Comic-Con weekend--who's still here??

I guess i'm just too damn old to get the whole Comic-Con thing. Couldn't possibly care less. Kim, the Kate and Jack/Sawyer story is all that I have to hold on to unless the writers can rebound from the frozen donkey wheel crap. Ben remains a fascinating character, Locke is a moron, and dead still is several shades of gray. Ok, I admit it. My name is Robert and I am losing interest in the TV show Lost. There, I said it.

Robert

mb said...

NICE ONE ANDREW! lmao!

wow - is it cost prohibitive to do two designs Kim? That's an awesome idea too. I may have to start playing around with some design ideas in the offseason for fun.

As far as who's not at Comic Con - isn't that most of us unlucky bastards? lol ;)
(sigh) perhaps someday I can make it happen.

memphish said...

A quick google search does not reveal any obvious trademark or copyright on TWSS. But I like Namaste Bitches better too.

I'm about 1/2 way through the podcast and have 2 comments.

1) I think the flashes in the finale are chronological. From the time Kate backs up her car to Jack and Ben in the funeral parlor is when the rest of them occur. I think this because a) it's easier to keep that straight and b) Carlton Cuse said after Sayid's flash in The Economist that the rule was the flashes are chronological. (Of course he said that before Ji Yeon aired.)

Still I think Jack sees obit (in S3 finale) and goes to funeral home as neither friend nor family then meets Kate at the airport. Then S4 finale starts and Kate slaps Jack, Walt visits Hurley (and I think he's under 18, probably about 14, because grandma brings him), Sayid kills guy and collects Hurley (Sayid tells Hurley Locke has died and that he died 2 days ago), Sun confronts Widmore, Kate has dream with Claire, Ben meets Jack at funeral parlor.

2) For 2 1/2 years I was a Jater because I thought Jack was basically a good guy who could make Kate settle down and be good too. I also thought he loved her for who she is flaws and all. But midway through Season 3 in the episode One of Us, the look Sawyer gets when Kate returns and the way he hugs her demonstrated to me 1000% that Sawyer loves her more and better. I think it is the case that Jack was much more messed up relationship-wise that we realized until late Season 3/Season4. By the end of Season 4 it's more like Kate needs to make Jack a better person than the other way around.

I also totally agree that the chemistry between Sawyer and Kate just gets better. The little looks, like they're always in on some joke, are to die for. Whereas Jack and Kate just look forced in a way that they had not in Seasons 1 and 2. But I guess there should be some awkwardness what with the witnessed cage sex.

A lot of the problem is that the writers have not done a good job writing Kate. I think it's very hard to write a woman in love with two men in a way that makes her at all sympathetic. They've tried, but you run the risk of her either being a super-skank or a ditz who doesn't know what she wants. Kate's been a bit of both.

Okay, I'll get off my shipper soapbox now.

Holli

mb said...

Sorry to hear that Robert. But I really think Season 5 has the promise of some of the most intense interpersonal drama on the show to date, with Jack trying to get the O6 to go back + all of the shit each of them is going through. PLUS - what the f happened back on the island that killed Locke?!?! February can't get here fast enough for me.

As far as Comic Con goes - I think the main draw for me is just to see the spectacle (as a sci-fi geek). What an enormous gathering of entertainment! Plus it would be a lot of fun to meet blogspot friends.

[ally] said...

I think the Namasté Bitches design would be even better on the back of a shirt, it would make it unexpected. It would make that granny walking by us do a double-take.

I agree with the whole Skate thing. You just can't deny that chemistry, even if she is meant to be with Dr. CoconutHead.

memphish said...

Ethan Hawke named his new daughter Clementine. Do you think he wishes he were Sawyer, or just a prospecter?

Holli

t-dot kim said...

I agree MB. I think season 5 will be a very interesting season. I suppose you can say that season 4 was all set-up for season 5&6. I'd like to see less sci-fi stuff (eg, Donkey Wheel) because I just can't get into that with LOST. It wasn't introduced in the beginning. If it was, I wouldn't mind it. For the most part it's been a show about mystery, faith, concidence, possibility, etc... to me, throwing the sci-fi elements are over the top. It's hard to explain...

I think, for me, I always though that whatever happened on LOST could actually happen in the real world. "Moving an island" via the donkey wheel thing--was a bit upsetting. Sure, it was cool to watch on screen--but that wouldn't happen!!! I know, you can use other examples, like Patchy and his nine lives, or Kate seeing that horse.

I still LOVE the show.

I sometimes feel like i'm the only one who doesn't care about Walt and his height... well... that's probably because i was 5 foot 3 when i was eleven and then shot up to six feet by the time i was 14... so it's not too unbelievable...

I hate being freakishly tall... :(

memphish said...

Kim, the end of the first hour of the show has a monster bloody a pilot and stick him in a tree. That's not sci fi? In fact, that scene alone was why I didn't watch beyond that episode in Season 1 when it aired (that and the fact it came on at 7 pm on Wed.-- too early and I had VCR conflicts.)

And by the 4th hour we got a walking paralyzed Locke and a ghost dad. Season 1 had sci fi/fantasy. But it has moved into more traditional sci fi with the time travel stuff.

Holli

[ally] said...

i'm surprised Lost isn't on that Stuff White People Like list, it seems like it's the kind of thing that would be on there.

I'm so jealous of all the Comic Con attendees. It's not just geeky stuff anymore, there'll be cool shows like The Office and Pushing Daisies doing panels.

oh yeah and Lost is gonna be there too.

t-dot kim said...

Touche Holli. I guess I can accept a monster killing the pilot, over time travel and an island disappearing.

(I told you it was hard to explain)

memphish said...

Robert said...

MB, at least you still seem to refer to Jack as an integral character to the show. Some just hate on poor Jack and see Sawyer as the new hero. Sorry guys, I really doubt that Matthew Fox being the only cast member to know the ending of the show bodes well for your 'Sawyer as hero riding off in the sunset with Kate theory.' IMO, the show will end with Kate and Jack alone together on the beach somewhere. Maybe they will zoom out and the island will be bouncing around the globe like a pinball. :)

Robert

mb said...

Robert - I agree - people may have Jack-hate, but I'm pretty sure he's the main man till the end of the series. I for one, am totally on board with watching his journey. "Through the Looking Glass" reignited his storyline IMO.

Kim - I was totally going to say the same thing about S.4 - that it has pretty much been connective stuff between S.3 and S.5. I enjoyed the hell out of it though.

memphish said...

I don't think Jack isn't still the main character. I just think he isn't the same hero he was in Seasons 1 and 2. And I agree I don't think Kate and Sawyer will ultimately end up together. I just like them better as a couple.

It's actually a great testimony to the writing and Matthew Fox's acting ability that Jack is a multi-dimensional character. He's not just a Dudley Doright. He's more of a Batman.

LOST has always been the master of making us change our minds about characters. Jack is still the hero. Clearly the rest of the world views him as such, but he (and Sun and to some extent the rest of the O6) don't see him that way anymore. And in the next two years I won't be surprised to find myself doing a 180 again.

The thing I always liked about Jack was that he was concerned about everyone else, he put others before himself, and he was a pretty egalitarian leader. He delegated and accepted their decisions, etc.

But once Jack got back from Othersville he was a giant dickhead. He was blindly accepting of Juliet who was indeed a mole! He ignored the advice and wishes of all the rest of the 815ers. And he decided what he wanted and only he wanted was what mattered. His abandoning of Jin on the deck of the freighter is an excellent example of that.

robert, bravo on standing up for Jack.

the dude goes crazy off Island for a pretty good reason. he accidentally screwed over everyone on the island (tried to rescue them but they magically disappeared) and then his DEAD dad appeared to him as a ghost. that's some fucked up shit right there. no wonder he was forced to drink.

and Jack didnt abandon Jin on the deck of that ship. Jack saved everyone's life on that helicopter by rightly getting them out of there before it blew the fuck up. cuz he, and everyone else, KNEW THERE WAS A GIANT FUCKING BOMB on the ship. if Jin had left when he was told to, he'd've been on that helicopter. and two people would've had to jump off of it... :)

and... Sawyer didnt "sacrifice himself" for the other chopper folk. Sawyer jumped out of a chopper into water (its TV and that always works out fine) in order to swim back to shore and be rescued by Daniel and the boat. which is why his whispering to Kate really makes no sense.

i guess maybe he thought he might die in the fall and/or not make it to the shore but he didnt know that the chopper folk would be the only ones rescued.

now, who will kate end up with? jack or sawyer? who knows with kate. she might even end up with someone completely unrelated whether that be captain tightpants or the first guy she sees at 7-11.

in san diego. drank more coffee. off to some comic-con type stuff.

memphish said...

Kristin from E! just twittered that Tim Kring is going to screen the first hour of Heroes S3 at Comic Con. It doesn't say if that's at the panel or some other time. That's going to tick off the LOST people if it's at the panel, and worse, if it makes the Heroes panel run long.

Holli

memphish said...

Oh, and Palmer rebuttal. Jack did not know the bomb would go boom in the next 30 seconds. He was just trying to save Kate in his perverse if I save her she'll eventually love me warped thinking. (Though in his defense that apparently worked, eventually.) If I were Sun and he'd treated me and my Hubby that way, and now I run an organization that routinely conducts hits on government officials, Jack would be #1 on my hit list.

Holli

memphish said...

Looks like that hour (well 42 minutes) of Heroes will be aired during the panel. Bad news for Ralph.

Holli

mb said...

Holli - good point about Jack - there was a shift in his character after Othersville. Is is perhaps b/c his focus shifted from trying to maintain the status quo and keep everyone (relatively) happy until they got rescued (as I think he believed they would in seas. 1-2), to actively trying to use the Others (specifically Juliet) as a tool to get off the island. Not sure how selfish his willingness to leave the island was (with plans to return w/rescue), but he definitely (IMO) shifted focus from being the caretaker to trying to be the hero that was going to actively get them off the island. At the time those two goals seemed to be at odds.

mb said...

Oh and Steph, I am in agreement with you that I have considered Lost at least partially Sci Fi since day one. There's always been that element.

memphish said...

I guess in his time with the Others Jack realized there was the ability to leave the Island. Before then leaving the Island had always been Sayid's goal and not really Jack's goal. Think the beach vs. the caves.

I also guess that part of Jack's get the heck off the Island crusade was driven first by his attempt to get away from a Kate who had chosen Sawyer. This is also evident in his attempt to switch his affections to Juliet and getting off the Island was the main thing he needed to do to impress her.

Later he shifts that to getting everyone off the Island, but then by the end of Season 4 it's really just about getting Kate off the Island. Which logically makes no sense to me given her legal problems. Not to mention the fact that she's been sleeping with Sawyer and Jack knows it.

I think I'd have more respect for Jack if he'd either really fight for Kate's affection while they were still on the Island or if he'd bowed out gracefully and left her and Sawyer to try to figure out where things stood between them. Instead he's all junior high. First he ignores Kate and hangs out with the new girl; then he tells a Kate that's worried about Sawyer that he (Jack) loves her and BTW lets get a move on; then he mopes again when she goes to Othersville with Sayid, and then he's going to save her dadgummit whether she wants to be saved or not.

That decisiveness, that knowing what you want and acting on it that Sawyer evidences when he kisses Kate in the Others rockpit back in Season 3 and when he kisses her in the S4 finale -- that's a turn-on. I mean after all on Island Kate and Jack have kissed once and Kate did that. And he let his guilt over Aaron get between their "love." That's just not mature behavior.

Jack lets me down when it comes to his love life. Perhaps I have unfairly high expectations for him, but I do have high expectations for him and so far he's failed to live up to them. Then again, according to Achara he's doomed to be alone! :p

Trevor McFur said...

I may be the only one, but I think that Jack made the right call in getting the helicopter out of there when he did. He might not have known that it would blow up in 30 seconds ... for all he knew, it might blow up in 3 seconds. If he had brought the copter back or Jin, they all would have blown up. It's a brutal call to have to make, but the fact that he made it shows how strong a leader he can be.

I know that the show has been sci-fi from the start, but I can kind of see Kim's point about the direction things are going. I'm not exactly sure what it is, but there is a difference somewhere between, "mysterious creature kills the pilot" scifi, or "wheelchair guy can mysteriously walk again" scifi and, "I turn this wheel and the island moves through time" scifi. Maybe it's just more fun when it's mysterious.

Yeah, Ally, it's definitely a spoiler-filled podcast. Well, spoilers and long pauses that end with that McFur clown saying, "Oh, was I supposed to say something there?"

PalmerEldritch said...

nice convo on the blogspot today.

however, pretty sure Jack knew there was a bomb imminent when Desmond told everyone that a bomb was about to blow up and kill everyone. leaving Jin behind sucks but it saved everyone on the chopper.

and Jack DID play the Han Solo card when he sprung Sawyer and Kate from the Others way back when.

the main problem here is that Kate is playing both those guys. if she could just pick one, they'd be all set.

fringe was... ok.

good cast, good humor, good music (giacchino), writing and storyline are... OK.

Denethor is hilarious in it and so is Pacey. Anna Torv is awesome but i already knew that from her voice and motion capture acting in Heavenly Sword.

got a bit of a Bionic Woman vibe, not from her character, but from a lot of "the setting" of the show (super high tech world and nobody knows it).

special effects were pretty cool. definitely worth a looksie and it definitely has the potential to be rather entertaining. didnt "grab" me like LOST did but what does?

Well for us Doctor Who/Torchwood geeks there is that panel like you said Holli - otherwise the only thing related to Lost at all is the Middleman panel - which is Lost writier Javier Grillo-Marxuach's (sp?) show on ABC Family. I watched the pilot - it has potential, but I wish (and I usually don't say this) that it was on a network like Fox where it could let it's hair down a little and not seem as squeaky clean. At least it seemed that way to me.

memphish said...

I've actually been watching The Middleman all summer. It never really quite comes off. It employs a lot of "bits" like the place and time stamp for each scene and Noser's use of song lyrics. In general I like the patter between The Middleman, Dubby and Ida. But it won't break my heart if it doesn't survive for a second season, which seems likely given recent developments.

Maybe everyone will get a chance to apply for Dharma jobs today and let us know more about the freaky word association test they give you.

"believe it or not," Producer Ryan and I sat like ten feet away from William Katt, Robert Culp, and Connie Selleca while they were being interviewed by MTV or something. i think Ryan's giggle made it into the interview so if you hear a giggle during the interview and wonder "who could it be" then "believe it or not it's just" producer ryan.

me and a dharma recruiter

the booth with the dharma interviews is all booked up today so i didnt get to go inside but Ryan from the Transmission was coming out of the booth as we were walking by and told us a bit about it. i imagine his blog will have more.

alirio, i shit you not, my e-mail wont send at the moment. i tracked you down on facebook though.

Is it me or does that dharma recruiter look well familiar? Ben's school teacher maybe?

Memphish said, "He was just trying to save Kate in his perverse if I save her she'll eventually love me warped thinking."

How can you really see Jack in this way? After he saw Kate and Sawyer together all he did was save their lives and always tries to make Kate feel better when she thinks that Sawyer is acting strange. He told Kate that they would go back to get Sawyer after he junped from the copter to make her feel better. He told her in the rec room that he would come back for her even though he thought she was in love with Sawyer. Kate almost hurled when Juliet told her that Jack saw them in the cages . I think we may be watching different shows, because Jack has always seemed to do the NOBLE thing when his relationship with Kate and Sawyer is in the forefront. He is NOT perfect, we all know this, but if I were a woman, I would sure want a man who seemed to love me unconditionally as Jack does Kate. Sure, he screws up in the future, but as MB and others have said, who wouldn't. Kates' off island answer to Jacks' marriage proposal sure looks to me like true love.

I know you guys are sick of this, but I am a hopeless romantic who felt sparks and a growing love between these 2 characters since season one. Rewatch "White Rabbit" and tell me Kate doesn't have STRONG feelings for Jack, even way back then.

I'm done and I'm sure you all are happy.

Comic-Com attendees please don't go dressed as a Star Wars character or Batman......too weird. :)

Being someone who definitely has more in common with Jack than Sawyer, I certainly understand his motives and can sympathize with him. However, I do think he has dug himself some rather large pits of despair by taking too much weight onto his shoulders. He's a control freak (I'm sure part of that is being a doctor) and that bleeds into all parts of his life, including relationships.
Certainly he's always doing what he thinks is in the best interests of everyone, but he IS stubborn (to the point of self destruction).

No doubt his actions CAN be seen as noble - but he also pushes people away from him (as does Sawyer for other reasons come to think of it) and has let his ability to lead people and his nobility get sullied by resentment, stubbornness, and lack of faith in himself I think.

There's no way Kate's going to stay with him if he doesn't turn his shit around I don't think.

Anyway - too sleepy to look at more of the awesome pics from Comic Con - thanks Palmer and Alirio for the updates - much appreciated. Nite all.

Seeing Crush in person was a bigger thrill than I would have thought.

Robert Smigel et al was AWESOME!

I am looking forward to burgers tomorrow

Bruce Campbell's autograph on the Chins book looks doubtful.

I need to get a raffle ticket tomorrow morning, and then be present for the drawing at 12:30 Saturday!

I'll be at the LOST panel at that time and won't be able to get him to sign without a winning ticket... unless I use my sexuality.

I'll try and figure something out

Stay classy Blogspottica.

All right I'm going shipper one more time with Robert.

I agree that all through Season 1 and up and including the episode What Kate Did there were tons of "sparks" between Kate and Jack. But did dumbshit Jack do anything about it, to encourage her? Other than let her kiss him? No! He pouts because Sawyer says he loves her first in an "infection is killing me" haze. It's not even 100% Sawyer means Kate, but Jack assumes that's the only girl in Sawyer's life he could mean.

Then after the kiss does he try to talk to Kate. No. He ignores her, then he yells at her that the girl has to stay at the Hatch. Again this is Jack's perverse way of trying to protect Kate, but does he say this? No! He's just "boys go; you stay." And of course after she turns into the ditzy Kate we've been stuck with ever since by getting caught by Tom (those Others should join the US Marshals) he ignores her some more. Even when he's smashed into her in a net he fails to a) act on his feeling by actually kissing her or b) at least talk to her about them.

It's the case that Jack suffers from the same thing with Kate (and Juliet) that he does with his ex-wife Sarah. He prefers to deal with things (work) where he has more control (as MB said), and he allows himself to become so involved at it that he can't deal emotionally with anyone else who might be relying on him for an emotional relationship. This is what happens when Michael comes back and what could have been Jack finally making his move at the line becomes the Bataan death march, and again with Libby's death, Sawyer holds the crying Kate (because that's what SHE needs) while Jack hides in the bathroom because he's failed again. His dad's story about being able to live your life in the face of a patient dying that he tells the 10-year-old Jack rises from it's White Rabbit hiding place.

I agree that by the future we are supposed to believe that Kate is 100% in love with Jack as she romps around without pants and eagerly accepts a very unromantic proposal. But of course that proposal isn't motivated in Jack by the desire to grow old together and live for better or worse, but to ward off ghost dad. Noble.

I know I'm being hard on Jack. I agree he is trying to be noble. To make what he considers the right choices. But he's acting too black and white right now. He's not willing to listen to other opinions (unlike everyone around here), and until he learns that it's not his way or the highway, his highway is going to have only him on it.

And I hope he does. I want to see Jack happy, but as his tattoo indicates, I'm not sure he has it in him.

Anyone going to Watchmen?

Holli

Stephanie said...

Holli or anyone else, explain why they always said Watchmen was impossible to put onto film.

I'm ready for Jordan to come home.

memphish said...

I'm relatively new to this Steph, but I'll give it a try. The gist of it is that The Watchmen is unfilmable because it is so detailed that to try to condense it to 120 minutes mean you'll have to leave something or lots of somethings "crucial" out. Telling the story of at least 7 main characters who have both separate and intersecting stories in the amount of time you have on a film is going to be tricky.

I'd say additionally that one of the things that makes Watchmen great is that it really takes full advantage of the graphic novel form to tell it's story. I'm especially interested to see how they are going to incorporate "The Tales of the Black Freighter" which is a comic being read through the novel by an otherwise unremarkable character into the film. How you create that sort of cliffhanger feel that you get at the end of each chapter of the novel through the course of the movie also remains to be seen.

But as for the detail, I saw Zack Snyder say yesterday that he figures people will want to watch it at least twice to catch all those things. In other words, "watch it frame by frame; you'll catch stuff."

- Hey MB, i hope things are okay and you feel better soon!

-Re: Watchmen - read this in Comic Shop News...
Less than a week after the [Watchmen] film's release, Warner will release a direct-to-DVD animated version of Tales Of the Black Freighter, the comic-within-a-comic that plays a role in the Watchmen storyline. The animated film is also directed by Zack Snyder, and the DVD will also include a documentary, "Under The Hood," that explores the back stories of the characters. Warner is budgeting more money for this feature than for its typical animated release; the studio forsees eventually editing The Watchmen & Tales From The Black Freighter together into a deluxe DVD that more closely mirrors the blended structure of the graphic album...

- I'm disappointed (but not surprised) that the film adaptation of Watchmen is happening. It is a story that is almost meaningless outside of the comic book medium, and the only reason it is being made into a movie is that it has such a big (and marketable) reputaton. However, I am glad that the people undertaking the film seem to have a lot of reverence for the original material.

- i'm kind of relishing my comfy view of comicon from afar. hope the attendees are having fun though

Yeah, I'm sure it won't contain anything new and shocking, but I'd still like to see it. I tried to reconfigure my TV/Cable Box/DVR situation, but all I succeeded in doing was having to resort to leaving more cables visible because of the way my TV cabinet is configured.

Hopefully, G4 will put it on their On Demand and I can watch it then.

Good luck tomorrow Alirio! We're all with you in spirit. I hope that you're getting some help from palmer and the Dharmalars in getting one of those Golden Tickets. Great pics again too ... although (dons nerd glasses) the gold Cylon could actually be the talking toaster briefly seen in BSG:Razor. And who's the girk with the ginormous hooters supposed to be? I thought maybe Zatanna, but as far as I know, Zatanna doesn't have green hair.

I'm looking forward to hearing all about the Lost panel tomorrow.

I never quite got the whole 'Watchmen is unfilmable' thing either. Admittedly it's a complicated story, but I think that we're all smart enough to follow a movie with a lot of flashbacks. And 'Tales of the Black Freighter' is definitely not essential to the story. As much as I love Watchmen, it really gets put on a pedestal sometimes.

That being said, I'm probably the only one in America who's not crazy about the trailer. I was listening to Kevin Smith on the /Film podcast on the way into work, and someone said about the trailer, something like, "Everything looks cooler in slo-motion". No it doesn't ... I frakking hate slo-mo action scenes. I just hope the movie has more substance than style.
