Say it LOUD! To get all revved for the upcoming TLI (and give Kim a bit more time to craft some podcast perfection) :)

Wasn't this Aimee's new sign-out line? Maybe she'll say it again...

Poll: What should Oklahoma City's team name be?

Trevor McFur said...

Better get that down before Jordan sees it, and we get the Jordanrant to end all Jordanrants.

That being said, I vote Thundercats, if only to hear, "Thunder! Thunder! Thundercats, Ho!" every time the team needs a rally.

[ally] said...

That's what I was thinking too. I like Thundercats.

This will be a true test to see if Jordan has enough time to rant while on vacation.

Andrew, I had read that Gotham Knight was actually supposed to kind of bridge 'Batman Begins' with 'Dark Knight', kind of like the Animatrix a few years ago. I had my queue all lined up to get it from Netflix when it came out last week so I could watch it before Dark Knight opens ... then I read a review on ign that said not only was it not such a hot film, but that it doesn't actually connect the two films at all. So I switched my queue at the last second to get the new Batman Begins Blu-Ray, which was also released last week, and which is awesome ... great extras, including a hi-def version of the 6 minute Dark Knight prologue that came out a few months ago. Good stuff.

Trevor McFur said...

And now Gotham Knight is listed as 'long wait', so I guess I'll be waiting until later in the summer...

and do we Americans tip a bartender? cuz the bartenders i know sure think we should.

mb said...

That BatTusi is fucking high-larioso! and the first time I think I've ever seen a "TOUCHÉ" and a "KAYO" in the "action" graphics. excellent - lol

What's this talk of casting parts of members our podcasting community? Love the concept - but did I miss something on the Dharmalars?

So since it was an irresistable urge - I did the research and apparently, according to My Heritage.com, Ben must be played by Russell Crowe :)

Chris JC said...

Bartenders - I don't believe I ever have. I get a mental list going on in my mind of people I should tip and people I shouldn't and you're right: bartenders aren't on it even though they actually probably should be.

The main difference, though, is that I go to proper pubs where the bloke pouring your drink is the guy who runs the place and is already doing all right from the profit margin of your drink.

I haven't done it for a while since smoking was banned - I'm not really a smoker but I used to do it in pubs (same way as I don't really drink at home either) as it felt like it was part of the atmosphere. Smokeless pubs are a bit weird to me.

That got away from me somewhere - anyway: next time I'm in a bar where the lifeless zitty moron pouring my overpriced pint (about $6 and counting) is clearly a wage slave zombie, I'll chuck even more money their way.

Even though they will not have done anything to deserve it beyond getting a job whose wage isn't enough by itself.

Sorry, guys, sour grapes and all but I used to be a cleaner on housing estates. Shit pay and totally essential service and all I got from the public was hassle and disdain - not a word of thanks let alone anything else.

mb said...

scrdmnkydst said...

I generally go to bars, not really pubs... i never really tip... I say really, i mean ever.

I don't really see the point in tipping... It's not as if they're doing anything that strenuous... Plus, i'm a student (always a good getout clause) and most of the bar(wo)men are students too... I ain't giving them any of my student loan...

Stephanie said...

mb, check this out.

Chris JC said...

The tipping culture is nowhere near as ingrained here as it is in the US. Things cost as much as they cost.

We have very little desire to fork out extra above stuff we know is too expensive to start with - I certainly don't do it as a matter of course, but will do for particularly helpful/speedy service etc.

Also, for all the price problems we have here, our minimum wage is much higher than US minimum wage so they are less essential to some workers.

scrdmnkydst said...

The only people i seem to tip are Taxi drivers... and that's usually if they've been nice and not spoken to me or if they've been unusally helpful... But other than that... I agree with Chris... as ever.

PalmerEldritch said...

you don't tip waiters? not even hot ones?!

here's a cool tipping story. prolly told it before.

out for lunch with some co-workers. left a large tip (maybe four or five bucks on an eleven dollar or so order) for the waitress who had a big belly.

my co-worker said "wow. that's a big tip. that's really generous."

and i, convinced she was pregnant, said "yeah, well. she's about to have a baby so i thought i'd leave a bigger tip than normal."

"no, dude. she's not pregnant."

"oh... well... uh... now she has extra money to spend on a diet?"

anyhow, Americanos, you tip bartenders?

Stephanie said...

I try my best to tip. If I see a tip jar/cup I have huge guilt. It's getting to the point it's for me as with the British- the product is expensive enough without the tip.

Trevor McFur said...

I always tip the bartender ... never even considered not tipping. I have to admit, it does irritate me a bit when I see the tip jar at a place like Starbucks or someplace where the person is working behind the counter. What's next, tipping the guy at McDonalds?

There's a really nice carwash service not far from here. You take the car through the wash, then you get out of the car, and they vacuum it out, polish, whatever. While you're waiting, they have free coffee, soda, etc, and old fashioned rocking chairs on their porch; or, you can watch them work on your car. All in all, actually kind of a pleasant 15 minutes or so, and you don't even mind tipping. But, even if you want to tip, they don't accept them. Very very cool.

andrew. said...

- I'm pretty against the concept of tipping but i still tip 20%+ every time. It's just a fact of life in the states that somehow restaurants & bars get away with paying shitty wages because tipping practices are in place. I'm just glad that cost of living in Pittsburgh is relatively low. Tipping in cities like New York, San Francisco or London would suck.
You know you're "supposed" to tip your tattoo artist?
i'm going to go ahead and start a rumor that you're "supposed" to tip your graphic designer & i'm definitely going to put a tip jar in the record store.

- finished Lost: Via Domus. pretty dumb game. What's amazing is that nothing in the game would make any sense if you weren't really familiar with LOST.

- "Generation Kill" from David Simon ("The Wire") starts tonight on HBO. I feel bad saying that i'm not really that interested in the subject matter while US soldiers are deployed on 2 fronts, but i've seen 5 or 6 shows & movies that have purported to show the reality of the wars.

- robble robble

mb said...

our minimum wage is much higher than US minimum wage so they are less essential to some workers

That's really the main issue right there Chris. Andrew's right restaurants (for the most part) and a lot of service jobs (not all) get away with paying shit wages.

Now I'll be the absolute first to admit when someone does NOT deserve my extra $$, but in general I STRONGLY believe in making tipping the default action when you go out and have someone serve you. Especially in restaurants, as it seems to me that ESSENTIALLY I was too lazy (or didn't plan well) to prepare food for myself so I am asking someone else to make food and serve it to me - so since the wages are generally shite, they deserve at LEAST 15% (I only go down to 10% or below if it's been so bad that a statement needs to be made - & sometimes that does mean no tip).

I'll admit that some of this comes from working in the service industry and having people generally take it for granted in this over-consumptive society we live in. You look back over the last 50 years or so and you realize how much less we do for ourselves now. Certainly people are busier, more 2 income families (like ours) which makes dependence on the service industry much more inevitable - but I think a little perspective when going out is a good thing.

OK - semi-rant over (steps off soapbox)

Stephanie said...

You should tip your respiratory therapist. I can accept anything up to 20 bucks. After that, it's unethical. Just offer me one of those juicy-looking apples from your fruit basket.

mb said...

Kind of on that 'over-consumptive' note - going to go see WALL-E for a second time this afternoon with the wife and the Ace (the Deuce will probably be fine right? joke).

Have I mentioned that I highly recommend this movie?

Oh - and forgot to say - thanks Steph for filling me in on The Buzz - haven't listened to that episode yet.

scrdmnkydst said...

I don't know about what happens with you yanks, but in England, we generally go to restaurants that have chefs and the waiters do nothing more than ferry the food around... The waiters get the tips, not the people who actually prepare the food. So for me, tipping seems incredibly superfluous (big word :)).

Pfft. what am i on about, all the restaurants i seem to go to add an obligatory Service Charge, which i am dead against. :(

Chris JC said...

MB: That's really the main issue right there Chris. Andrew's right restaurants (for the most part) and a lot of service jobs (not all) get away with paying shit wages.

But actually, since everything costs at least double the difference in minimum wage between US and UK is actually minor, or even non existent.

I'm actually referring to the federal minimum wage - the ones per state or city (San Francisco $9.36, Massachusetts $8 etc) leave those in receipt of them MUCH more well off than our National Minimum Wage of £5.52. At today's rate, that translates as $10.98. That seems high but since this is a country where a small bottle of Coke costs about $2 and petrol is (at my local station) over $9 a gallon then it doesn't really hold up.

What I'm saying is - I'm a cheapskate and you are all better than me.

Plus I'm so very tired.

LOVE YOU!

Andrew, I've heard good things about Generation Kill. A couple tv critics whose opinions I hold in high regard have given it high marks. I am sorta with you that the subject matter doesn't really do it for me. But I am such a ginormous David Simon fan due to The Wire, that I am looking forward to this one.

It's always annoyed me that certain jobs are deemed tip worthy by our culture, yet other jobs that pay just as crappy are not. Oh yeah, the hot waitress girl at the fancy restaurant, who's parents bought her that mercedes, she deserves some extra cash. But that ugly girl who is forced to go home smelling like big macs and fries, that bitch should be thankful to get her minimum wage and that her unattractive ass even has a job.

Chris - indeed State minimum wages, do offset the miserable Fed minimus wage.
I was mainly referring to restaurants in particular b/c (someone correct me if I'm wrong), restaurants often get away with paying less than minimum wage. Now that is not to say that many waiters don't make a very comfortable living (largely b/c of tips), but I have had many a discussion with people/friends who are under the impression that tips are pure gravy.

Jordan's point is also a good one - when we talk of tipping - we're only talking about a small sector of the service industry.

I just can't shut up - sorry folks

- there is a waitstaff minimum wage which is lower than regular minimum wage. i think it's around $3/hour now.
- waitstaff are taxed on their tips. i think the way it is calculated is that they are individually taxed 7% on the food they serve.
- all of these practices seem to be in place to lower the cost of operating a restaurant & artificially keep the advertised price of the food down.

I was a server and a bartender in an Italian restaurant for 5 years. People don't tip as much as you'd think. The average is somewhere around 10%. People brag at how they tip 15-20%--when they don't. We also got paid less than minimum wage--AND 3.5% off our tips went back into the house. Sooo...if you had a shitty tip, or NO tip--sometimes you ended up actually paying out of your own pocket.

Although with that being said, from working in that restaurant, I did well for myself. I paid for school and got a car. I wish I was back in that restaurant--because now I'm broke :(

This sounds disgusting.

Good to see we'll get the Beast and a new event when the semifinals start on AG next week. Also good the figure skater didn't advance. Those women were totally underwhelming. I hope they'll be able to show all the events during the semi-finals. I hate the recap of events even when it is the ever so boring Skytrack. I was also sad Brick got eliminated. But for the dislocated shoulder he would have finished 20 seconds faster.

Fringe, the next LOST for Dummies.

"There will be a story every week as well as the overarching story," JJ Abrams said. "So you won't have to have insane devotion to follow it. You won't have to watch episodes one, two and three to understand episode four."

AG was a heck of a lot of fun.

Wolf is a crazy bastard. Where does he come up with his weird tirades?

memphish said...

I assume Wolf must write his own material and they let him run with it. No one else has clever repartee.

Kiddo though did last night. After they introduced the NYPD cop, Kiddo said: "Follow the clues detective, you're about to be big time bashed." Now if I could just get AG to hire him.

Stephanie said...

lol, Holli. The trash talking on AG is more than I can stand. So scripted. Morgan is now hooked.

PalmerEldritch said...

the contestants' trash talk is AWFUL. but Wolf usually has something hilarious to say.

and Militia was saved by Marines at sea? must google!

Militia rescued at sea.

Im Johnsen for some Lars/TlI love! podcast wise, I'd say TLI is up for some new UNEDITED content I sure as hell don't need any kind of perfection, your eaither worth listening to or not.. And you all could talk about cleaning your shower and I'd listen! But Ralph please no more dentist storys...ever..
A polite rant, I'd hope it was? Last sentence was a little,, Yoda? .

PalmerEldritch said...

i'm just hoping for some TLI before Comic-Con. :)

memphish said...

I don't think I'd ever heard Militia speak until last night. In fact you barely ever see the guy. Worst performance of the night last night was the cheerleading figure skater falling off the rings. I can't imagine Uncle Robin (Yount) was very pleased with that.

Oh, and Marines are the bomb! We spent a year with them on Okinawa (they have Navy docs) and 2 years at Pendleton. Nuts, but go to guys.

For any 'Diggnation' fans out there, they discussed "Lost" on their most recent show and Kevin Rose agreed with me that the finale was S-T-U-P-I-D!! :)

Finally saw Cloverfield last night. It was really pretty good and creepy. And I only got slightly motion sick! Didn't even take any dramamine. Hud was a nitwit, though.

Hey Blogspotica!

Long time no write.

Good news!

The Chins Book has arrived.

Thanks Kim!

I'm at the post-office now. Will open it when I get home.

Can anyone confirm that Bruce Campbell will be at Comic-Con?
I don't see his name on the autographers list.

PalmerEldritch said...

alirio, i couldnt find anything either. but the Chin's website says he is.

http://www.bruce-campbell.com/events.asp?specific=8

maybe he'll be at the Dark Horse booth? a booth isn't necessarily a "booth." it can be a store with an autograph table and tvs set up and stuff.

[ally] said...

Maybe you'll have to hunt him down, Alrio! Tackle him to the ground and then ask him politely to sign the book.

That's cool, Trev. I didn't know you hadn't seen it before. I'm sure the motion sickness isn't as bad on a little screen as it is in a BAT screen*

(BAT screen> Big Ass Theater screen)

Ben was Silent Bob for Halloween once. he looks more like kevin smith. I look like George Duran from food network!

Ralph - apparently Metrobuzz were talking about "casting 'MetroBuzz: The Movie'". I haven't heard the episode yet.

I posted above that Ben could be played by Russell Crowe...but....he's not part of Metrobuzz...so DHARMALARS: THE MOVIE?
I like it.

I'm a new poster, and I have to say that if this thread is this long in just 5 days, y'all have a lot to say! Especially in the off-season. Good on ya!

Welcome Emmy!

Trevor McFur said...

Alirio, he's promoting 'My Name is Bruce', so at the very least, he should be doing a panel. He's also had his appearance listed on his website for at least 2-3 months now, so there's no reason to think that he won't be there. Your mission, should you choose to accept it (and reception of the book constitutes acceptance), is to get that book -- which has all of our signatures in it -- autographed by the man himself. Then take pictures of it and post 'em for all your blogspot buddies. :)

Trevor McFur said...

So who's all going to Con? I know that the Dharmalars are going in force, and Alirio is going ... anyone else? Palmer, you went last year, are you going back?

PalmerEldritch said...

I believe they are recruiting....

;)

The only info I know of is that email that they sent out if you registered on their website

I'd assume you would get further instructions from Cuselof at the Lost panel or there'll be a desk or something. Anyone know anything else?

Also - anotheer small bit at the SPLOG

Benjamin said...

Hey guys. Ralph and I are getting ready to do our Comic-Con preview show tonight, and I don't know ANYTHING about Octagon Recruiting, so I was wondering if there's been any advancements in the game that let you know what to do at the convention. E-mail us or write back here if there's anything you think we should mention. Thanks, everybody.

Trevor McFur said...

Ben, here's a cut and paste of the email I received from Octagon Global Recruiting about 3 weeks ago. It's the only info that I've gotten from them since initially signing up.

Octagon Global Recruiting, on behalf of the Dharma Initiative, would like to thank you for registering your expression of interest in our latest volunteer recruitment drive.

We will be launching in San Diego on July 24th at Comic-Con International offering select registrants the opportunity to take an exciting aptitude test that will give applicants the chance to demonstrate their unique talents.

The Dharma Initiative hopes you will be able to join us to find out more about their ground-breaking new research project. We will contact you closer to the date with more information.

For those not able to join us in San Diego, Dharma's full recruitment program will be made available online to registered recruits after July 27th.

In the meantime, the Dharma Initiative urges you to spread the word. Invite your colleagues to join the team at www.octagonglobalrecruiting.com and take part in this once in a lifetime opportunity.

Here's a really in-depth Guide to Comic-Con that would probably be really interesting reading, if I was going.

PalmerEldritch said...

yeah, ben, someone may have called from california asking about octagon global recruiting thinking you weren't gunna do any research... :)

of course, when tasked to find out, both of our first instincts were to just go ask at the blogspot and see if anyone else would do all the legwork for us. fantastic!

nothing wrong with being lazy as long as you get results.

Just had a leaflet come through the door for our new local McDonalds. It has a voucher on to allow us to get a Big Mac and what we refer to as "medium" fries for the equivalent of $3.98.

Is that good?

It's a cheap voucher price so it must be, right?

Lost got a best drama Emmy Nomination. No major acting noms, but I haven't seen the supporting list yet.

memphish said...

Michael Emerson is the only actor with a nomination. Actually Juliet Burke's bus hit ex-husband does too, but for Damages.

Giacchino got a nomination and they got several other editing, etc. type awards, but amazingly not a nomination for best hair.

Get rid of spam on Forum does this HELP?

Trevor McFur said...

Glad to see Lost getting a Best Drama nom again. Boston Legal up for Best Drama again ... probably said this last year, but I've never met anyone who watches that show. But year after year, there it is. I was hoping to see Jorge get rocognized for Best Supporting.

Good to see Pushing Daisies get some recognition, too ... but it looks like they got a nom in every comedy category EXCEPT Best Comedy!

I didn't see one nom for Heroes.

Not sure if that forum list would help or not ... our spammers don't even have to register. Don't know if an admin can block IP addresses from posting or not.

Benjamin said...

Trevor, Palmer, thanks for the info. We may have recorded a show last night...

I'm pretty juzzed for Comic-con, I must admit. And stressed.

And good for Lost and Emerson.
