Sweet!

Nothing like a little bit of Kim and Aimee to start off the day.

Now I don't have to listen to the "Morning Zoo Crew" on the way to work

I just wanted to apologize in advance for my role in this "podcast". It wasn't my idea.

So... after many attemps via P2P software and bit torrent search, I regret to inform you all that the pictures referenced in today's episode of TLI are VERY hard to find ;-)

Great show ladies!

As a Canadian I too bash the States often. But as I tell my American friends, I don't hate AMERICA, it's just AmeriCANS I hate.
And not all of them, just what I believe to be the ethno-centic, ignorant, poorly educated masses in charge of Western POP culture; leading us down the road to ubiquitous SUV's and massive credit-card debt :-)

I'm worried to make my real thoughts on why I take offense to anti-American comments. Let me just put it like this. "America" is far too big a stinking country to define any group of people. It's far too big of a brush to paint anybody with. It's no different than if I were to make mass generalizations about "Europeans" as a whole. Somebody in London would be all "Don't lump me in with the French, Germans, etc". That's the exact same way I am about the South, Midwest, and East Coast. Honestly, I have as much in common with people where Steph lives as I do people where Elias lives. In fact, I would be more uncomfortable and out of my element in Alabama than I would London.

The part of the country that I live in for the most part thinks pretty similar as most Canadians claim to. Yet Canadians can point fingers at me and my "America" because their imaginary border means more than mine does. I'm sorry. But that is a load of bullshit.

I just find it in poor taste when anybody rips on countries outside their own and act like they have all the answers for them. The holier than thou arrogance that comes across can be extremely annoying. If you aren't there, you don't know exactly what you are talking about. You have no idea how many people in Europe I have had rant to be about all the things "America" does wrong. When really, what are they talking about? They are commenting on some pre-packaged crap they get from the news. It's no different than me watching my stupid, holier than thou, slanted news and assuming that the rest of the world is the way they are.

And I rip on America all the time. It's kind of a "I can make fun of my mom, but you sure as hell can't" kind of thing. You haven't earned it/know enough to not make ignorant generalizations.

I dunno. It's really not that big a thing (even though I have it in me to rant about it). Just something I have an opinion on. I think on a whole, people who don't live in an area need to stick to criticizing their own and have a bit of humility before casting judgment on others. All countries have idiots in them. All countries have racist, ignorant fools who can if focused on, make the rest look bad. I've traveled enough to see the good and bad in many different places. Everybody thinks they are the best, blah, blah, blah.

One last thing. One final US vs the world thing that drives me mad. One of my biggest gripes. So the US government is idiotic/borderline evil. So what? How the hell does that reflect on me? I don't know how many Europeans I had tell me in 2004 that regardless if I myself didn't vote for George Bush, as one of the "American people" who did as a whole vote for him, I was responsible for his actions throughout the world and deserved to be called on it by Euros. That f'n pisses me off more than any "oh dumb Americans" comments. I dislike politics with a passion. Yet I as an individual am defined by them? No wonder there is so much hate/ignorance in the world. That's as stupid as me saying that somebody living in San Francisco is responsible for Barry Bonds using steroids.

In the end, it's not about America or any of the things that are being debated. No, it's no different than high school mentality of "you go to so and so school, so you are lame". It's stupid. It's ignorant. It's the exact kind of backward thinking that leads to world wars and racism. Yeah, maybe it's on a much more innocent level. But to me, it's the same thing. Of course, not as big a deal. But it's a microcosm of the type of thoughtless nonsense that makes our world so stupid at times to me.

Rant over.

Bigger Dance current standings:

(Out of a possible 20 pts)

Player - Points
Trevor - 19
Andrew - 18
Jordan - 17
Ally - 16
Elias - 14
Ryan - 13
MB - 12
Kimberley - 12
Palmer - 11

I nearly had the upset with Spitzer's hooker over Ali Landry yesterday. But Landry won by 1 pt. The hooker seemed to have tied it at the buzzer and was going to send things to overtime. But upon further review, the final vote came just after the buzzer.

Jordan said...

Alirio, Don't worry man. I didn't take any offense. Was just ranting in general.

So I just actually listened to the "podcast". Besides a lot of it not making sense due to how heavily edited it is (which is a good thing. trust me), I am having a real hard time trying to figure out who I'm more annoyed with. Aimie for accusing me of stalking, or Kimb for playing along with it. I was sick as a dog watching tv and I get a text on my phone from Tdot to join them. I said no a couple times, then finally relented. Then I hop on to accusations of stalking. Wtf? lol. Just as long as the truth is known.

PS - I am still sick as a bitch. I've been sick for almost a week now. I've tried everything. Anybody have any voodoo recipes or whatever to suggest I try to kick this thing?

I think I'm due for a fall tomorrow in the Bigger Dance. I've picked The Bellucci to knock off Carrie Underwood (she's a three seed -- what???) and Ana Ivanovich to upset Alicia Keys (who also seems a little too highly seeded).

Jordan said...

Yeah, I picked Ivanovich too. But Carrie Underwood is going to go far. She has the female vote big time. I initially had Belucci based solely on personal opinion. But I caught myself after thinking things over.

Sorry you still feel bad Jordan. Have you considered ordering some strange drug cocktail from Canada? I hear it's cheaper there. Just kidding. Thought I'd pile on in the rant thing.

On a more serious note, I was sick as a dog in Tokyo and bought this over the counter medicine called Benza Bien which is basically "Well Well" in 2 different languages. Those bad boys had about 3 different OTC meds, plus scopalamine which is for sea sickness. See if you can find some of that.

i think that the reason that residents of the USA are referred to as Americans is cuz its a lot easier to say than "Citizens of the United States of America." i'm not gunna refer to the British as "Citizens of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland."

as for the US, we've got hillbillies. but so do a lot of places. we've got smug elitist jerks. but so do a lot of places.

and while it's fun to generalize and complain about america, at least we're not beheading people in stadiums. we're not throwing rape victims in jail for being outside their house with a male to escort them. we're not censoring google or yahoo. we're not putting a warrant out for Richard Gere's arrest cuz he kissed a girl on TV. we're not doing a lot of fucked up things that other countries are up to.

are we perfect? heck no. but at least we can complain about ourselves without being thrown in jail. which is better than some countries.

all in all, america's a pretty good place to be from and has done some startling good things for the world over the past hundred years.

and since i don't think we've had a president elected by a majority since the 80s (if not longer) dont assume we all think the same way.

Damon & Carlton interviewed for The Onion's AV Club

Jordan said...

From the AV Club interview:

AVC: Do you pay a significant amount of attention to fan response and critical response? Does it affect how you proceed?

CC: Well, you know, we do, but in sort of a filtered manner. We don't really get on the boards and read all those comments. It just feels like people who are writing on the boards tend to be more focused on the mythology, and for us, we're making a character show. The thing that we spend the most time on are the character dynamics of a given episode, and what we're learning about these people. The mythology is sort of the frosting on the cake. But that's what everybody talks about, and what we're asked most about.

I don't always agree with Cuselof's dismissals of fans gripes. But I side with them on this one. In fact, I have the same thoughts myself. To me the show is a character piece first and foremost. It's interesting that it got it's rabid fans due to the mythology. But in the end, I don't feel that stuff is meant to matter even one iota as much as the basic human elements between the characters. I know that dismissing the mythology on a fan blog isn't exactly a popular thing to do. But I'm not saying it's pointless. It makes for a very interesting show. I just tend to agree with those guys in that it might get a bit too much emphasis at times. Show still rocks though. And a new episode less than a day away! Woo hoo! Or as the internet kids say, Woot!

So spoiler-free predictions -- what episode will the O6 get off the Island? Tonight? End of S4? Sometime in S5?

Holli

Stephanie said...

I imagine the season finale is the 6 getting off the island. But that seems too predictable, like Starbuck being a Cylon.

Trevor McFur said...

I see the 6 getting off of the island in the season finale; in the same episode, in a flash forward, the 6 also return to the island.

memphish said...

I too think them getting off the Island is the finale. Maybe it will come in hour 1 of the finale to switch things up a bit which airs a different day than hours 2 and 3. I think you'll have to wait a couple of more weeks for your Claire death Steph. Don't we have to deal with Karl and Danielle tonight?

scrdmnkydst said...

Palmer - Lost airs on Sky One on Sunday at 10pm, but as i'm a poor student, i don't really have access to that channel, so i just have to download it. I know it doesn't seem the most kosher of ways to see it, but it's my only option other than waiting for the DVDs and that's too far away.

Stephanie said...

herlihy, you shouldn't feel ashamed of flying the bit torrent airways for Lost.

andrew. said...

- i agree with estimates that the Oceanic 6 get off the island in the finale. It seems like the logical focus of the season & I doubt they'll introduce some other big conflict in the final 5 episodes.

- I always imagined Claire going to the freighter and either the freighter or copter blowing up but Aaron being Oceanic 6 screws that up. Now, in order for Desmond's prediction to ring true, Claire & Aaron have to take a helicopter ride, land, and then get seperated.

- I agree with Carlton that Lost is a character-centric show, or at least started that way, and I think, if you look at fan responses to specific episodes, fans get geeked about the emotional scenes just as much as the big mythology reveals. The problem is that Damon & Carlton then say that the show is a mystery show, and obviously, when faced with a mystery, the natural response is to try and solve it.

This Christmas I bought my friend all 3 season DVD sets in order to force him to catch up so I can discuss it with him. He and his wife plowed through the show in a couple of months and they made it up to episode 4.2 or 4.3 but have stalled, waiting to watch season 4 in big chunks. I talked to him about it a little and he liked the show a lot but is hung up on some of the screwed up plot lines, mostly stuff involving the Swan hatch. Why did it exist in the 1st place? Who wanted the button to be pushed & who didn't? Now that it's gone, why aren't there repercussions?

While i've seen the exhausting Lost fans with the out-there theories and triple-guessing of every plot development, i think in general Lost fans have been very forgiving, patient and willing to give the writers the benefit of the doubt that the answers to the mysteries will be satisfying.

Trevor McFur said...

I think that there's so many mysteries that once seemed huge that we'll never really get an answer to, the Swan hatch being one of them. Remeber in Season 1, they made it seem like opening that hatch would be this horrible thing ... Walt had some sort of premonition about it, and the Hatch itself had Hurley's numbers stamped on it. And you could say that some bad stuff happened after they opened the Hatch, but what happened that wouldn't have happened anyway? Ben & the Others already knew all about them and were planning on kidnapping Jack et al., so all of the death and badness that happened from conflict with the Others would still have happened. And by opening the Hatch they rescued Desmond, which definitely seems to be a good thing. Unless you say that, opening the Hatch resulted in the button not being pushed, which led to the sky turning purple, which led to the island being discovered and eventually the freighter folk arriving, and that's the bad thing that happened. But then why did Ben manipulate Locke to not push the button?

Alirio said...

I'm celebrating new LOST episode day by missing it and going to a Montreal Canadiens playoff game instead.

Took me an hour and a half to get through to ticketmaster on the phone and all they had were single tickets!

I am now without an arm or leg... but I will cheer until hoarse!

I'm hoping for a Habs win or at least tripple overtime!

memphish said...

That's interesting about your friends and their method of viewing Andrew. Lindeloff said something similar in that AV Club interview. To paraphrase he says that us having to watch it week to week and with giant hiatus breaks is a unique experience that after May 2010 will no longer exist. Then people will have it all and can run through it as fast as they want. So to some extent as creators they have to balance how they tell the story for both those of us with the episodes dribbling out now, and with future viewers in mind who can watch it as fast and furiously as they want.

Holli

memphish said...

The thing about hockey in Southern cities is I think it mimics America's migration to Southern cities as Jay and Jack can attest to in the Raleigh area. But the only people I know who like hockey is one family whose dad grew up skating. I'd frankly forgotten that Nashville had a team until I heard someone talking about the playoffs the other day.

Same goes for soccer/football, it's not a big deal to us here, but we have our own team.

Yet the NHL was retarded enough to move teams from hockey loving cities such as Quebec, Minnesota, Hartford, Winnipeg for such hockey hot beds as Nashville, Atlanta, Raleigh, and Ft. Lauderdale. And you wonder why the NHL struggles to the point where their playoff games are shown on the VS network.

Jordan's going to London? Terrifying. Tip: bring double the money you think you're going to need for anything.

I don't understand moving the NHL out of Canada at all. They tried to expand way too quickly without really thinking about it, that's why, I think, that the sport's in so much trouble. It definitely would benefit from contracting about a half-dozen teams and moving some of those Southern teams back to Canada.

Problem with moving teams back to Canada is cities like Kansas city with brand new arenas with NO TEAMS OF ANY SPORT YET TO FILL IT!

Also, NHL demands minimum seating and a minimum number of corporate/luxury boxes. Cities like Winterpeg and Queeebec don't have that kind of dough. D'oh!

Thanks Palmer, but my MO!! was technically late by one post...

I have the day off tomorrow so I'll be able to watch LOST et. al. with my coffee and toast :-)

So I'm planning to shoot the wad (TWSS) at the Apple store tomorrow. In addition to the iLife that it comes with it, what software do I need to add?

Looks like I was right in picking Alicia Keys to be upset, but as Jordan predicted, The Bellucci got creamed by Carrie Underwood, so I lost a point there. Maybe I'm betraying my age, or maybe it's the paleness of my neck, but I don't see that at all ... I'd pick The Bellucci over Carrie Underwood every day of the week and twice on Saturday.

The Bellucci worked her charms on me too. I should have known better than to vote against a woman with a big blonde mane.

PalmerEldritch said...

not that Carrie Underwood's unattractive or anything but, c'mon, The Bellucci is The Bellucci!

this bracket nonsense sickens me.

Jordan said...

I'm with you guys. Bellucci all the way. As Trevor said a couple days back, Carrie Underwood isn't bad looking. But she is the type of chick that women think is super hot, but men are just, "yeah, she's good looking".

Holli:

Get MS Office 2008 (99$) or Open Office (0$ from openoffice.org)

Also good apps are:

VLC for media playback

Transmission for BitTorrent downloads

Acquisition for P2P

Skype for Skyping

FireFox for speedier browsing

The iMac (as well as other macs) come packed with everything you need, Holli.

I'd say, just buy the computer for now and see what you might need later.

What about word processing Ally? What's Apple's solution to Word? And will it read old Word files?

Thanks for the list Alirio.

I can tell everyone's excited for new Lost tonight. Lots of posts to read through.
Holli, people actually migrate to the South these days? Really? Nobody comes here. No jobs.
No hockey here. Just football. College Football. That's all.
About 15 years ago my husband would watch some hockey and some boxing. I think he now watches UFC instead.

mac's have "iWork" but you can also get MS Office for the Mac. or try Open Office for free if you like. i think you'd want OpenOffice.org Aqua so you don't have to run OpenOffice through X11 (too much work).

http://porting.openoffice.org/mac/download/aqua-Intel.html

you'll want the Intel version if you have a new mac.

Trevor McFur said...

Just don't get one of those envelope Macs that don't come with any peripherals.

[ally] said...

I have Microsoft Office both at work and home. But I know Apple offers iWork.

I don't get why everyone swoons over Bellucci. 10, even 5 years ago maybe. But she's getting sort of old and to me she always looks like she just ate something sour.... I think that her hotness is more of an idea now then an actual thing.

So, who's hotter? Your girlfriend/wife or "The Bellucci"?

Jordan said...

Again, what Trevor said a few days back. Women like to think they know what men find attractive.

[ally] said...

Well a lot of it is common sense, Jordan.

Like for example most women think Carrie Underwood is gorgeous. But to me it's like, she's almost too perfect. She's attractive, but I wouldn't have her as my pick over The Bellucci.

I'm with you guys, The Bellucci all the way.

Hey Steph -- Tricia Helfer is going to be on Burn Notice. Palmer, did you ever catch up on Burn Notice?

Holli

PalmerEldritch said...

holli, i haven't quite caught up yet. it's on Hulu though right? we're trying to DVR the episodes that we missed. maybe we'll spend sunday watching the Chin on Burn Notice.

that's interesting news about Tricia Helfer being on Burn Notice. i'll be looking forward to her playing a different character. she plays 6 (and the different versions of her) very well but it'd be nice to see her in a good mood for a change!

actually, there's one scene in season one or two of BSG where she impersonates another character and i was really surprised how well she did. anyhow, it'll be cool to see her in another role.

isn't she supposed to be a television remake of The Thing or something?

Stephanie said...

Yeah, I saw that. I'm ready for the return of Burn Notice.
Don't we need a pre- episode discussion thread? Or is this it?
