Steph...I tried to download Buffy. (I can't find a good copy). Where can I get it online?

Stephanie said...

Here, here, and here, Kim. Caution: the first season can not be fully appreciated on first viewing. I skipped through until I was completely hooked (which didn't happen until half way through season two) and then went back later to enjoy season one. Enjoy!

This ABC promo is just weird.

Matthew Fox needs a haircut and to get rid of that god awful soul patch.

I love the randomness of that promo, you'd never see something like that on US telly, although Matthew Fox cooking dinner with Teri Hatcher is almost as random.

Also, someone needs to introduce America to proper bacon, that crispy stuff just doesn't cut it!

scrdmnkydst said...

not crispy bacon > crispy bacon

Andrew., and it was a beautiful ending. My direct tv DVR records til the end of programming. I hear Tivos are limited by time.

Hey peeps!

Well - I went and did it - after being free and clear of payments on 2 cars for almost 2 years, I just couldn't take the freedom from debt anymore and on Sunday I traded in my "clunker" van for a 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe. It's pretty damn cool. First car I've had with a USB port - you can stick in a USB drive with mp3's on it and *blip* - up comes the title of the first song on the display and starts playing.

in the year 2009, DVRs shouldn't cut off the end of Mad Men.

After having it happen multiple times, now I come within inches of taking sledgehammer action when my DVR pulls that shit. COME ON Comcast! WTF! You seriously can't update you're f-ing programming grid so that SCHEDULED program overages (like when Lost goes 5 mins over) are taken into account?!? This is why I always extend the record time by 2 or more minutes on shows that are important (or 6 mins for Lost). I sympathize - very frustrating.

SUPER psyched to read about the Kids in the Hall reunion. Hope it's not too hard to get a hold of (TWSS) in the US.

Stephanie said...

Ryan, I'm limited by money.

memphish said...

Congrats on the new car MB! My mom needs a new car, but I'm passive agressively ignoring it until she realizes she doesn't need as big as car as she thinks she does. Her old car was unfortunately not a clunker.

Every single day I add an extra minute onto my DVR recordings to make sure I don't miss the end of any of them. Even when they record the length they're supposed to run, for some reason the cable company never seems to know what time it actually is.

These photos are a good argument for why there should not be poodles. Sorry poodle fans.

Uh oh...I DVR'd Mad Men too, I hope it doesn't cut off. However, Mad Men is on at least twice a day here, so I stand a good chance of catching the last couple of mins if it does.

I'm seeing a movie Thurs night...Basterds or District 9?

Stephanie said...

That's hard, Kim. Don't let District 9 get out of theaters before you see it. See IB.

I'm fairly certain the networks purposely run their shows long in efforts to combat dvr'ing. Not sure why they think that will cause viewers to watch live. But whatever. If you're on Comcast had the last min or so of Mad Men cut off, it's On Demand. So you can just watch it that way. I don't even record it seeing how it's always on there. Saves room on my tiny hard drive which is always full.

Jordan said...

Jordan said...

District 9 or Inglourious Basterds? I know this question has already been posed. But I'm about to go see one of them right now. Need help deciding. Right now I'm leaning towards Basterds, as I've heard that it's really nothing like the way it's been promoted. And that really intrigues me.

Jordan said...

That's what I hear. That it's not what the promotional stuff makes it out to be. Not nearly as much Nazi killing, and not as much Brad Pitt. More subtitles than anything. I knew something had to be up when I started seeing all the positive reviews from critics. Because if it was the simple "Let's kill some Natsees" flick the ads make it out to be, they wouldn't be saying such things.

mb said...

I'll most likely see District 9 this weekend. Doubt my wife will want to see Bastards, but maybe I can get that done at some point.

Started re-watching Man of Science, Man of Faith (Ep 2.1) last night, but stopped because Locke's bone-headed insistence on getting into the hatch kept making me want to punch him in the face and the annoyance was only compounded by Jack's muskrat flashback hair.

I wonder if the reason the Others took Walt was because of Ben's crappy childhood. Maybe Ben identified with Walt and had him taken to keep him from being raised by a crap dad. Reminds me of what Mikhail said to Kate, that the Others give the kids a better life, better than the 815ers. Hard to see how locking your daughter's boyfriend in a bear cage goes with that, but if anyone could reconcile that it would be Ben.

Holli

Jordan said...

Saw Inglorious Basterds. Loved it. Need to see it again. Jew Hunter deserves an Oscar. Some of the most intense conversational scenes you'll see. Tension, knife, get a room. In my MOST humble opinion, people who dislike it are idiots and simpletons who were deceived by the misleading marketing and who watch CSI and Two and a Half Men. I admit that it's 3/4 subtitled, 90% dialog and Brad Pitt is barely in it. But if you can't get past that to appreciate it, sorry but I'm going to be a huge snob and just call you dumb. ;) Tarantino's best film besides Pulp Fiction. I don't think it's even close.

Jordan said...

Only gripe was the inclusion of Mike Myers. There's no way his presence doesn't take you out of the film for his one scene. Way too Austin Powersish. Also, not that it really mattered all that much. But Eli Roth is a pretty shitty actor. Stick to directing dude.

Jordan said...

And one other thing. This movie proves a point I've tried to make forever! Enough having people from different countries doing accents!!! I'm so sick of hearing American actors doing shitty foreign accents and vise versa. This movie did it right. Have a German character, get a good German actor. Have a French character, get a good French actress. Have some American characters, get some people who speak Amrrrrrrcannn. Amazing how much better a movie is when you don't have a bunch of shitty accents.

Also another gripe I've had for ages that was avoided by QT. If you're doing a period piece set in a foreign country, where they are likely to speak the local language. Have them freaking speak it! Sane with if you have a film where there are characters from multiple countries. I loved how the characters so seemlessly switched between languages. And it was so well written and for the most part supurbly acted, that for me it didn't feel like I was reading at all. The true mark of a good subtitled film. This is so much better than having the film pretend everyone spoke English and giving them faintly-British accents to make it feel "foreign".

Jordan said...

This is not a joke.

There is going to be a MacGruber movie.

Stephanie said...

I agree, Jordan. Except I like Eli Roth. I like Eli Roth a lot. I know nobody else does. He's sexy... in a creepy way.

Stephanie said...

The Bear Jew. Don't tell me that's not great.

Jordan said...

Yeah, the character was great. And as I said before, Roth's shitty acting didn't hurt it too much. Seeing as how he had maybe 5 lines. But he sucked on all 5 lines. And even when he isn't speaking, he just seems awkward to me. I still didn't really mind. But why does he think he's an actor? Replace him with a better actor and axe the Mike Myers cameo (which goes against what I was saying earlier about accents, btw), and the film just might be flawless. I know some people found Pitt's character to be a bit cartoonish. But I thought it worked and was meant to be that way.

Steph, I think we need to do a podcast.

Jordan said...

Ok, flawless is a bit much. Replace that with "even better than awesome". Still though, my point remains.

Listened to Filmspotting's take on the film. (note: if you didn't like the movie and/or don't want to hear them gush about it, avoid.) Apparently there is some either film critic or writer who wrote an essay about how terrible the film is from an ethical/social standpoint. His point being that the film's fictional take on history is like pretending the holocaust never happened. And that the true revenge on the Nazi's is a true and accurate portrayal of events. Haven't actually read this guy's article yet. But I wanted to take the moment to say, wow, what an uppity douche.

Jordan said...

Apparently Summer Glau is joining the cast of Dollhouse, and Brandon Routh is going to be on Chuck.

Comment on Mad Men. I recently watched the first couple ep's of the new season. After watching the first two seasons in short-order over a couple weeks, I'm having a hard time watching it piecemeal. Just don't seem to get the same enjoyment out of it. Still like it. Just not quite the same. I'm thinking I might hold out and wait til the season is over. Anyone know how many ep's this season is supposed to be?

And not that this place has been exactly buzzing of late. But did we say something to offend our English pals? I've noticed neither ChrisJesusChrist or SacredMonkeySack have been around much lately. Hope this isn't the start of some kind of war. Cuz we'd totally kick their asses. Again. :P

First they should try shutting their computers on and off. (IT Crowd reference.)

TV on DVD may kill TV. There are perfectly legitimate reasons to wait and watch Mad Men all at once. Then again, if we all do it there won't be a Mad Men. TV is such a mess these days.

I really enjoyed last night's episode, but then again, I watched it this morning and fast forwarded through the way too many commercials. Remember when AMC didn't have commercials? I do.

Working in Kathmandu for a bit. I'm off to Galiano Island next week for a friend's wedding. Then Nepal for my job.

Mike Myers got the second biggest laugh at my screening of Basterds in London - he's not even as ridiculous as James Coburn in The Great Escape or any other crappy but entertaining accent in war films. Eli Roth was awful in a quite embarrassing way.

Loved the film - Landa especially.

Saw District 9 this weekend - commented on it over on the boards - good good stuff. I had a questions about a plot point or two, but overall I can't get it out of my head. That's either the sign of a really great movie or a really crappy one (in this case the former).

I didn't notice iTunes downloaded a new TLI 'til just now.

MB did you ever see the Hangover?

Does anyone watch Smallville? It's helped fill the Lost void for me during this hiatus.

I was flipping through the channels and I saw the Flash episode. Liked the ep so I gave the series a chance (I never liked Superman). All in all it's a pretty good show. But be warned, the story and especially the dialogue go on excessively at times. I was watching in 1.5x a lot toward the middle of each season.

A fun drinking game is to take a shot every time someone says something then walks away and the other person just stands there. This is probably the only game that would get you as hammered as if you took a shot every time Michael said my son in Season 2 of Lost.

What NEW shows are people looking forward to?

I've heard a lot of hype about Flash Forward but the premise sounds stupid, kinda reminds me of Deep Impact. Don't know why.

V sounds cool, but Scott Wolf? I could barely stand that guy in Go.

Glee? Wow. There isn't 1 Fox show that makes up for it canceling TSCC. I guess they needed the money to pay the Idol hosts?

Also, has anyone heard of Henry Ian Cusick doing Darwin's Darkest Hour? I thought it was a mini-series on PBS, but found out it's a film.

Also, good luck Kelly. Don't understand why you'd need it though. School is cool.

I gave Smallville a chance last season. I heart the charismatic paramedic and Green Arrow. When it comes to dialog I fast forward. I enjoyed it until Lana came back and Bride was the last episode I watched. I bought the first season and watched the first disc. The show started out very good but the CW has milked it dry.

Check out all the Fall tv previews on iTunes.

mb said...

tha Kid - still have not seen the Hangover - hoping to have time to rent it (and more importantly WATCH it even)

I've only watched the pilot for Glee, but enjoyed the hell out of it. Nice balance between being sincere and optimistic with just a bit of a sardonic edge (they don't take the main characters too seriously). I never use the word "sardonic" - maybe I mean sarcastic. College was a long time ago - lol

What's the deal with Friday Night Lights this season? Anyone know?

Anonymous said...

Steph, I think FNLs was put off until Summer '10. Not sure, but I remember reading something like that.

Also (I only said "Also" once this time) if you're gonna watch Smallville, watch it on HDNET or rent/get the early season dvds.

Season 8 was disappointing and by far the worst. I wouldn't have liked it if I hadn't been conditioned to care about the characters. The season was rushed and just awkward. Only the Legion and Supergirl episodes were anything special and the latter is probably just cause I really like Supergirl (on the show, not the comics).

As for X-Files, good luck. I know people like it, but I was just bored by it. Kind of like the 4400 (another show I tried to force myself to like.)

Jericho is good if you haven't seen it.

I still need to finish Red Dwarf, plus I still gotta watch Firefly and Serentiy.

Palmer, saying anything is better than Heroes is like saying food is better than poison.

I like Heroes, but I've come to accept that the show is crap. After their most recent season finale, there is nothing I can say to defend the show.

memphish said...

Re Friday Night Lights S4. I could not stop thinking about it last night because the Oklahoma back-up quarterback is named Landry. It's set to return to Direct TV (good for Steph, not so much for everyone else, though I'm contemplating the switch) on Oct. 28 but not run until the summer on NBC. NBC is the stupidest network ever.

Holli

Stephanie said...

The reason NBC is the stupidest network ever is named Ben Silverman.

I had wanted to see
Post Grad to see Zach Gilford do something other than Saracen but it seems the movie got a fresh rating of something like 9% from Rotten Tomatoes.

Since I'm done with Veronica Mars, what should I watch next?

I tried Jericho. Couldn't get into it.

I just watched The Boat that Rocked. I'm rather undecided on it. It made me kinda tear up so I say see it.

memphish said...

I finally managed to watch all of Season 1 of Dollhouse. It took forever to get the discs from Netflix. It started slow; I loved that 6th episode that did things a little differently, and I thought the last 2 episodes were pretty kickass. I'm excited for it to return.

I also watched Epitaph One and I can see why they didn't air it. I thought it was okay for what it was, but I didn't see the need to nail down your future. It felt a little, dare I say it, Heroes-like. It also didn't really make sense after the 12th episode as a season finale. Episode 12 made a lot more sense as a finale.

I've also watch The Comeback this week. I really liked it. It's kind of like the British version of The Office, so painful, but you can't look away.

Holli

Stephanie said...

I think maybe Joss wanted Dollhouse to be canceled. I just don't feel like he's heart's in it. But just a feeling.
