Lost Gets The Shaft

The Golden Globe nominations were announced and the most intelligent (yet complicated) show on television didn't get jack squat!

Oh well, at least we still have the 3rd Annual Losties awards to look forward to. Lost is nominated in all of them :)

And this is why I think Emmy's and Golden Globe awards are just as for sale as senate seats are.

So should we ask the US Attorney's office to indict here too Steph? Actually it being the Hollywood Foreign Press maybe we could just get them all deported by the Dept. of Homeland Security. I'll email Janet Napolitano.

Let's have an awards ceremony right now:

Best show - LOST
Best actor - the cast of LOST
James Bond will return in LOST

Best ARG - ....not LOST

Best Actor from the UK in LOST

That woman (Naomi)
That woman (Penny)
Alan Dale (Charles Widmore)
Henry Ian Cusick (Desmond)
Rebecca Mader (Charlotte)

Actually... It's secret nominee Naveen Andrews. He was well good in those 4 episodes that he was stuck in that cabin on the freighter...

- requisite post about how much I love the LOST show. I loves it. I'm looking forward to the Losties too. I'm going to live-blog from the red carpet.

- BSG mobisodes start tomorrow.

- I thought last night was the last episode of Pushing Daisies to be broadcast because there was no "next on" preview at the end. But it turns out that there's an episode next week and then they're going to air all of the remaining episodes in January, maybe all at once. Plus, Brian Fuller apparently re-edited the last episode so that it's not a cliffhanger.

- Meanwhile, ABC has picked up the undead corpse of Scrubs.

Desmond was really good at acting like he was taking a nap in those episodes.

Hey, I'm new here and thought I'd introduce myself....ahem...

I'm David Duffy from Newcastle, England (nearer Scotland than London) and I have been listening non-stop to the Dharmalars who in turn put me on to 'The Jizz Cast' and I think all you guys are hilarious, so thanks for making me chuckle and whetting me for season 5. I have listened to all the back episodes and look forward to new ones and am looking forward to contirbuting to the funnies here.

Welcome Duff. Go ahead and start contributing. We're in need of a new topic.

Probably not. I think I'm the only one with Direct TV who watches.

I've got a topic. I'm up to The Other Woman on my DVD set. I do not understand that episode. Juliet's in the jungle, whispers, then Harper appears and says to kill Charlotte and Dan before they can deploy the gas, then Jack arrives, then more whispers and Harper disappears.

So did Ben in fact communicate with Harper and tell her to give that message to Juliet? If Juliet had followed orders would everyone on the Island have died then? So did Ben or Harper want to kill everyone? And where is Harper now?

I think this is one of those episodes that you could take completely out of the series and it wouldn't change anything.

Holli

Duff said...

She is giving Duffy's around the world a bad name.

Hey Holli, I think it was Alperts decision, but i think Ben would be aware of it as a last resort measure. I think the others would have used it to kill Keamy and his bunch if they could have, and sacrificed all the rest. Well, those that couldn't get to the safety of 'The Temple' maybe...

andrew. said...

- I haven't started rewatching so i'm rusty on the "Other Woman" (a Canterbury Tales-era TWSS) but i think this is my take on the deadly gas station:
* the station is indeed a deadly gas plant and not a power station
* Daniel & Charlotte are indeed going to neutralize the deadly gas and not trying to kill everyone
* Ben, Alpert & the Others plan on using the deadly gas as a last measure against Widmore's anti-island forces and are taking refuge in the temple
* Ben or Alpert sends Harper to tell Juliet to get off her ass and kill Daniel & Charlotte. She obeys because she's still under the impression that Ben "owns" her and he'll kill loverboy Jack & the losties if she disobeys.
* Juliet hesitates because she's starting to feel like she's a part of the losties. Daniel & Charlotte diffuse the deadly gas station with one second to spare.
* the episode is kind of filler, but it was trying to sow seeds of doubt about the intentions of the freighties.

scrdmnkydst said...

well. We know one thing on that island that can do whatever it wants, no not ben, the smoke monster. I always assumed it was that... I don't care how fast you can move, you can't get out of vision in a space that big so quickly without being seen.

other things that dis/appear from nowhere: the black horse, the medusa spiders (razzle dazzle!) and Yemi.

I figure that the Smoke Monster was testing Juliet. Because it only saw her for the first time in Left Behind and it "scanned" her... maybe this was just a test to see if she deserved to live...

I'm guessing it's just gonna be one of those things that never gets explained until some uppity fan asks Cusellof and they'll just fob it off on the Smoke Monster.

I put too much thought into things.

memphish said...

I guess Alpert could have sent Harper to push Juliet's buttons. And I guess the Temple could have monitors to know when to send her. But why don't the Temple Others such as Alpert and Harper just kill them? Just to get Juliet back into the fold?

I think Juliet didn't kill them from remorse so much because it was too late to stop them. If she'd killed them when she found them the gas would have deployed. Her only chance of stopping it was to let Daniel try to stop it and by unmasking them so that they would die too if they were lying. But it was so fast that she didn't really have tons of time to analyze.

I think the stuff they touched on in this episode that might have made it a little more meaningful suffered from the writers strike. Most of the stuff about Juliet and Jack, the Tempest itself, etc. just gets rushed or dropped after they come back from the strike.

Holli

memphish said...

Herlihy, if it's the Smoke Monster then Juliet should be slammed into a tree soon right? After all she refused to repent and kill them.

Holli

scrdmnkydst said...

haha. I guess she realised at the right moment that Charlotte and Daniel were not trying to murder everyone... even if they did a stupid job of making everyone think they might.

Seriously. What the hell was wrong with "oh. there's this dharma gas station that might blow up and kill everyone, do you mind if we turn it off... y'know. just in case"

Sometimes LOST is a bit too mysterious for it's own good. It should go back to the good old days where the most mysterious thing in an episode was "what is Paolo doing in the toilet?"

andrew. said...

i think Damon & Carlton said definitively that Harper was Harper and not the smoke munster in one of the podcasts.

Stephanie said...

I got the feeling from The Other Woman that chick from Rescue Me was a stand in because maybe Nestor Carbonell wasn't available due to filming Cane or something. Funny, when I googled Nestor Carbonell to make sure I was spelling his name right, "Nestor Carbonell eyeliner" was the first result given to me. Poor, Nestor Carbonell.

Chris JC said...

Welcome, Duffy! You should call into one of the shows - I'd love to see how a Geordie accent goes down.

Sorry, "gers doon".

memphish said...

Andrew, I remember them saying Harper wasn't the smoke monster too.

As for talking to one another, on LOST? What show are you watching? The lack of share of information between freighties and Losties seems right. I think Daniel had to disarm the Tempest so that Keamy could retrieve Ben and then kill everyone including Charlotte, Dan, Miles and Frank. Only problem for the Freighter 4 is that they aren't in on that plan.

i reckon, and this is purely speculation, that seeing as though jack reckons they need to go back, season 5 will be all about getting back... and season 6 will be about what happens when they get there. I'm assuming something big's going down.

Mr. Bill said...

I hope they get back to the island b4 season 5 is up. I actually would like it to be really early in season 5.

scrdmnkydst said...

I'd hate that.

We've just spent 4 years waiting for them to get off that frigging island. If they go back within the first 5 episodes it'll feel like it was a massive waste of time.

I'd be well annoyed. There's so much they could do off island.

memphish said...

Well they have to tell the story of what bad happened on the Island when the O6 left. They have to tell what happened to Locke so that he ended up in the coffin. And they have to tell how the O6 plus Bernie (not Bernard, but Locke) get back together to even attempt getting back to the Island. All that should take at least 1/2 or 2/3 of a season, right?

The biggest story-telling problem is the fact that people are separated and that usually leads to fan grumbling. Think Tailies arc and cages arc. I imagine there's only so much separateness we can take before they need to resolve it and move us in a united front forward against a baddie, Widmore or someone or something else.

I also hope that this reconstituting of the Dharma Initiative has some relevance to the season despite the suckiness of the ARG.

- i think i scared someone off before last season becuse i griped about their hinting at spoilers. i tried to make sure they knew i wasn't really upset but the damage was done. i'm an asshole.

- i guess we got to see the losties off of the island during all of the flashforwards last season, but i agree that it would feel cheap for them to get back too quickly. I do want to see this Temple before too long though, those others have been headed there since season 3.

andrew. said...

- Best of luck on your final Stephanie!

- i broke down and started the rewatch of season 4 tonight. i watched episode one with the commentary. It's a really fun one. I have some serious comments on the commentary but i'll hold off since the DVDs are brand new.
and i watched episode 2. I really had a negative reaction to episode 2 when it aired because it felt different than most episodes of lost. the multi-character flashbacks introductions felt like something from Mission Impossible. I enjoyed it much more this time around, knowing more about everyone's motivations. There's a great scene where Charlotte first splashes down on the island, before she encounter Locke & Co. and she's ecstatic to be on the island. It plays really cool now.

Chris JC said...

The web is the new British empire, didn't we tell you? It was invented by a Brit so we own it.

What's that?

Al Gore!? - Get real.

I think on a recent episode of Steph's podcast, I postulated that not only have the guys left behind on the island travelled back in time, but that they will inadvertently become the Hostiles that seemingly attack Ben's DHARMA school, and not Alpert's bunch at all (not the gas attack, but earlier incursions). I can't justify this with anything, just thought it would be cool.

Stephanie - best of luck.

I think I may get myself a copy of The Dark Knight today. This is the first release to make me wish I actually did have a Blu-Ray player. And a TV that went above 720p.

Hello all. Brand new to your web site. Big time fan of both the Dharmalars AND the Lusty Lost Initiative. And HUGE Lostaholic anonymous. I just recently listened through the back catalog of both of your podcasts. True right goodness of epic proportions I must say. And I do. Just might be 2 of the greatest Lostcasts around the webs. One might call it after the Mark Wahlberg/George Clooney classic, The Perfect Storm. Of awesomeness, that is.

What is most wickedly sweet is how the 2 Lostcasts compliment one another in the most perfect of smashing ways! You might say the devil's ying to the monkey's yang.

On one hand you have the raucous rambunctions of Ben and Ralf, the tubular California "dudes". You guys remind me of my good old college days. Just how all of us Delta Gamma Lambda guys used to talk back in the day. Almost makes one teary eyed just thinking about it. Only difference is you don't seem as drunk. Ben and Ralf have so many good movie/pop references, you really know these guys are true connoisseur of all things hip and rad. I just love how it isn't just about Lost. Yes, I read the itunes reviews and people go "Waaa waaa! They don't talk about Lost enough!" Whatever Matilda. You don't know how to dance. And you sure do not know what makes a good, check that, great podcast! I LOVE them going off topic. I love Lost. But I also love everything else. Yes Ralf, Robot Jox did suck absolute balls. Preach it brother. Another reason I love the Dharmlars. You can really tell that these guys get along and are true pals. Great chemistry. Nearly unrivaled in a muddled rhelm of force fed "buddy" podcasts. An utterly great podcast in a world of overly serious Lostcasts. Throw another to the fire boys!

And in the other corner is the jizztastic samplings of two of the funniest, most foul-mouthed, and sexiest (yes, I've seen your myspace ladies. grrrrrrr-ow!) bitches this side of Flatbush Avenue. Not an episode has gone by where I wasn't laughing my pants wet, while at the same time airing them dry (if you know what I mean). With what the Dharmalars give you in the party central stylings, these gals give you that after hours "that's what she said" where's my musilex vibe. I am constantly going back and forth as to who has the hotter voice. As a gentleman, I will not indulge any deeper. TWSS. To pull my mind out of the gutter (and my hand out of my pants), let me get back to their podcast. Wow. Talk about out of the box. TWSS. Where you ladies get your ingenius theories from, wow. Truly wtf wow. During my backtrack of listening, I came across about 10 times where either Kimberly or Amy entirely called exactly what was about to happen in the upcoming weeks! I think you two either know writers from the show, or are something of savants. I am fascinated to listen to the complexities of the ramblings of Ms. Little Rock. As well as comforted by the dulcet tones of Madam Kimberly. Who ever knew two chicks could be so good? Really girls. Nice job.

I'm looking immensely forward to the new season of the greatest show since Twin Peaks. Who thinks that Locke is going to kill Jacob? (ME!) And I am even more so looking gregariously to the newest installment of Lostcasts! My itunes subscriptions (and pocket) await!

P.S. - Greatest apologies for the overly wordsome introduction. I was just so excited to find the hearth of the architects of my newest and coolest obession. Once again, Thank You. The daily train ride from Trenton to DC as never been better.

Chris JC said...

Thanks Kim, I am looking forward to it. I have been wanting to post for a while but I'm getting revved for season 5 now. They put me off looking for others, then i found you guys and gals and am glad i did.

I am about to watch 30 Rock now, in which Alec Baldwin proves he is a demi-god! but i don't watch the US office although i am tempted since you have seen and like both versions and love the US version. I just love the brittish version so much i don't want to taint it! I know its different but....

Mr. Bill said...

Happy testing Steph!

Welcome to all the new peeps.

t-dot kim said...

Duff, FYI...we don't talk of Cliff--and his "podcast(s)". If they even qualify as such. :P, jk. But seriously, we don't talk of THAT podcast ever since they dissed our beloved "Make Your Own Kind of Music with Scott and Steve" podcast from back in the day.

UK Office, love it. "There's been a rape!" So wrong, but on that show, soooo right. The US version is also pretty good--however, I think it's beginning to lose what's made it so great the past 3 seasons.

Mr. Bill...as for my LOST predictions. Man, I don't know what to think. I've just started re-watching season 4. There are a lot of things I forgot/missed the first time around. This show is frickin' detailed it drives me nuts trying to figure out what's going on--but I love it. I do think this season will be Ben & Sayid rounding up the Oceanic 6 to get backc to The Island. I also hope that it would take all 17 episodes to get there. I'm hoping by a 1/3 into it, or mid-way they get back.

I do think, Ben has no idea Desmond was on The Island--there has been no mention of him from Ben. That dude knows everything, I'm sure there would have been something along the lines of, "Oh ya, your Scotish mate--Desmond--from the Swan Station needs to come back too."

I may watch the 1st series and see what i think. I'm sure i'll love it as Steve Carroll is one of the best dry comedy guys around.

I think tha, because of the problems with the cage/tailees we will see our guys back on the island about halfway through the series combining to fight evil(?) forces. Plus, no Skater stuff for most the season?! Some fans would go crazy. For the record I would say I'm more Skate than Jate, but Sawyer is so gonna cosy up with Juliet first. Duff, I wouldn't rush to any judgments on the US Office after season one. Not at all. It didn't find it's voice until the 2nd season. The first season was the writers first straight copying the UK version, then slowly figuring out how to do it right. Most people were not huge fans of season one. I think it's alright, just not that great. However, season 2 changes everything. Seasons 2 & 3 were IMO great. Season 4 things started losing their magic. And the current season 5 is continuing that trend. But still, it's one of the best comedies on tv right. 30 Rock however, is that much better.
