None of those words were "what".

How about this well known phrase?

"Th bt'saw hbtas hfes bj d"

Perhaps not. Anyway - I'm watching one of our news programmes doing what they think is clearly an amusing bit of reportage - Mark Perry of Dead Ringers to read the I Have a Dream speech in the voice of George W. Bush.

It was rubbish. Not least because it sounded like Christopher Walken. You'll be pleased to know he isn't the guy who does Dubya on the show.

if that's klingon, how do we give you a wedgie over the internet?

PalmerEldritch said...

not much, kim. what's up with you?

Chris JC said...

That's not Klingon.

This is Klingon:

No, not flying today. It's my first day back from vacation, so I'm not too upset about that :P

It's raining/lightening so it's not too safe.

PalmerEldritch said...

oh yeah! vacation!! how was it, kim? do anything cool? get attacked by any Nazi Raccoons?

chris, i tried to find an Enigma translator before i resorted to accusing you of Klingon. "nuqDaq 'oH puchpa''e'?" so, what were you typing there?

t-dot kim said...

It was very cool. I had a great time...a little stressful the last 36 hours. We almost missed a flight from Spain to England which would bring me back to Canada--but we made it. Oh yeah, and I lost my luggage, but got it back before my flight home. So it's all good.

Everything is so friggin' expensive! I won't be able to go anywhere for a little while :(

Thanks Ally...I figured I was missed when the thread went over 200 posts, lol.

We went to Madrid for 2 days, Barcelona for 4 days, and then London for a night before I caught my flight back to Toronto.

My mum sent me Canadian Olympic medal updates, Blue Jays updates, and news updates via text message which was awesome of her. But she also sent a text the day before I arrived in Madrid about the plane that crashed in their airport.

lol, that's funny kim, although i'm sure it was terrifying at the time.

- Herlihy - that was a promo shot for season 4. It was supposed to "reflect" the fact that LOST was going to involve the real world after the Season 3 finale flashforward. (spoiler alert)

- anybunny else paying any attention to the LOST ARG? It's still severely lacking any LOST content but there are a couple of entertaining (in that killing-time-at-work-on-the-internet sort of way) tests.

- i finally saw the "shocking" LOST casting news. It turns out to be not so shocking, but i still wish i didn't know.

Still trying to decide what to do about NOLA trip. Will decide by 11 am tomorrow after hurricane has a night to head toward Ally instead of NOLA and after we talk to hotel, restaurants and museums we're planning to visit for status updates.

On the plus side if we don't go that's probably 5 pounds I won't gain. On the giant negative side if we don't go I can't think of a reason to get out of the 1-year-old birthday party in Batesville (read middle of sad sack ass nowhere) Mississippi.

This is part of the reason 30 Rock is going to take so long to come back:
Election years tend to be good for Saturday Night Live. This year's primary season certainly was, even earning a mention from Hillary Clinton in a debate. Hoping to take full advantage of the moment, SNL is starting its season on September 13 and dropping three half-hour, election-oriented Weekend Update specials into the slot normally occupied by the SNL-inspired 30 Rock. (Rest easy: 30 Rock returns October 30.)

Ah! I have finally looked at Blogger using Safari on a Mac and it's true - tiny text and massive buttons. The moral of the story is: use a different browser or get a PC.

Anyway - Holli, we tend to ignore that as there are so many massive dicks in the financial district of London that it tends to blend in among the suits.

In reality, what you have there is the eccentrically named 30 St Mary Axe - sometimes even more eccentrically nicknamed The Gherkin.

It's become one of those bits of the landscape that things like Doctor Who now like to show being destroyed.

andrew. said...

it's a flash card that you can load with programs to run on your DS. Lots of applications, games, mp3s, video files... the DS is a pretty powerful piece of portable hardward that really isn't being used to its full potential by most of the kiddy games for it.

Hello Blogspotica!

I've been working hard on updating our site and was wondering if some of uze guyz would click here and let me know what you think.
I'm still working on it but any opinions or suggestions would be appreciated.

Chris JC said...

Typing isn't bad, but you have to take it slightly slowly in case it doesn't register a click.

Andrew - you're referring to things like the R4 which, although they allow you to do many interesting and laudable things, are generally only purchased for one reason - so people with downloaded DS roms can stick them on a flash cart and lay them without paying. I believe they are on the verge of becoming properly illegal.

Mr. Bill - that's nice. It appeals to my desire for internet clarity in an age when most sites are baffling.

I really enjoyed the podcast Steph and Chris.

Chris, I have a question. If the BBC never shows commercials how do you now about new Cadbury offerings and the like? Also, do you have to pay for each TV or for the household? I ask because I currently own 3 TVs and would guess that at least 2 is the standard in the U.S.

Steph, I'm disappointed you didn't liken the use of "Hoovering" to the Southernism of calling all carbonated beverages "Coke."

Looking forward to your next offering.

Television licence covers the entire house, regardless of however many sets there are. My wife and I live in a shared house, usually with two other tenants.

We pool our money and pay the TV licence and it's perfectly fine.

As for advertising, it's only the BBC channels which are free of commercial interruption - the other channels have advert breaks and programme sponsorship.

In fact, here's an old Cadbury's advert now.

Note that not all our advertising relies on sexualised animals.

scrdmnkydst said...

I've not clicked the link... but i can pretty much tell that it's the Flake advert. "only the crumbliest flakiest chocolate something something". I'd much rather sexualised bunnies than stupid creme egg goo monsters... ahem.

Next week, if the Lord is willing and the creek don't rise- Fall TV Preview.
Chris, NBC will be bastardizing Top Gear this Fall.

Chris JC said...

Cadbury's Caramel Bunny.

Voiced by Miriam Margolyes.

Top Gear might well work in that format. It's kind of designed to make viewers from other territories annoyed anyway. As long as it keeps a sense of humour.

Still wonder how big a mess we'll make of Law & Order...

memphish said...

Interesting that they tax the physical building. Does that hold for apartment blocks and the like too? I guess that's basically the case here unless I need a cable box to get extra channels. I don't have to pay a 2nd and 3rd basic cable rate for my 2nd and 3rd TVs which I don't have boxes for.

So what other commercial channels do you have? Lucky enough to get 4-5 shopping channels and 3 or so religious channels and 2 we're going to air the government channels like us?

Steph, as for Fall TV preview I think the only new things I'm interested in are Fringe and Kath & Kim. The unending ads during the Olympics made me resent that new Christian Slater show, and I'm with you that Crusoe looks awful. As for returning shows I'm not that stoked either. Sure I'll watch The Office and HIMYM and Earl and Pushing Daisies, but that's probably about it. Oh, and Chuck.

I think I'm out on Heroes. It just annoys me to the point I'm not enjoying it. And way waste 42 minutes not enjoying something.

Holli

PalmerEldritch said...

ah, yes. Law & Order: Funny Wigs. supposedly it'll have Martha Jones and Lee Adama in it.

Chris JC said...

It's per "household" so you couldn't share it out in a block of flats, or apartment block if you prefer.

Plugging your TV into an aerial nets you two BBC channels (non-commercial) and three other channels (ITV1, Channel Four and "five") which have commercials.

From then on it's a matter of how much you want to pay. You can get a Freeview decoder which decrypts digital channels also received through the aerial:

Freeview

Anything in that lot that starts with BBC (or is CBBC or Cbeebies) are non-commercial. The rest are advert-tastic.

Beyond that you can pay for installation of FreeSat (which is technically two different services from two different companies with the same name and concept)

Freeat
Freesat from Sky

Again, only those BBC channels are free of commercials. From there on you get into expensive cable or satellite subscriptions from the likes of

Sky
Virgin Media

etc

And again, some commercial free BBC channels and then lots of commercial ones - some of which may indeeed retain the US commercial break structure (Before we got our own version of the Sci-Fi channel we got used to opening titles going into a commercial break.)

The weirdest part of watching an imported US show is that they don't put the commercial breaks in the same place, so where you had act breaks we'll just fade out and fade back in, often into the same scene.

Then about two minutes later they'll chuck in the break where they think it should be, often very poorly judged.

scrdmnkydst said...

i thought that sky had started using the US adbreaks for their imports. It certainly seems so... I watch Project Runway on Sky3 on Freeview (yet another complication) and it has breaks every ten mintes. which is well frustrating. especially as i like to download stuff from the us and watch them sans adverts.

but meh. I only really watch Come Dine With Me and Big Brother nowadays anyways.

scrdmnkydst said...

- ah campaign politics. classy.

- Daniel Dae Kim was at the DNC, saying nice things about Obama. Here he is giving an audio interview

- Just watched Traitor & X-Files: I Want To Believe.
Traitor is a decent watch. I have some issues with the politics of the movie, and its confused attitude towards muslims, but otherwise it's a well crafted, grippingly paced thriller with another solid performance from Cheadle.
X-Files is just bad. Duchovney & Anderson do a good job of finding their characters again, but the script is an unwieldy mess of contrivances & holes. I was a fan of the show up until the 1st movie, and i don't think this movie does X-Files fans any favors.

Still jet lagged, but I'm getting there. I think I am currently on east coast time right now. Falling asleep and waking up too early. Will prob make it to the west coast by the end of the week.

Saw Tropic Thunder this weekend. HILARIOUS! Loved it. Robert Downey, Jr. just might be my current favorite actor. He owned that movie. And tons of good cameos, especially the big one. Good stuff.

So I'm way behind on most news. What is this about a Max Payne movie starring Mark Wahlberg? I wonder if it will be as dark and gritty and the games. Hopefully it doesn't just come off as a Matrix effects rip-off.

I'm about to say something that might be controversial. I think Palin needs to stay at home and take care of her 5 kids. only two years off in the timeline. and they're not passing it off as their child. and she doesn't have mono, real or imagined.

as for whether a mother of five can be the Vice President, sure. why not? alirio's right that a husband, or baby-daddy, can take care of the kids. and there'll be secret service agents to change diapers.

also, the Governor of Alaska probably has more actual work to do than most Vice Presidents. Vice Presidents travel around and say things like "The American people stand with you, Tri-County Creamed Corn Festival!"

occasionally, they have the chance to break a tie in the senate.

also, a new hair style may make her lose her "naughty librarian" look.

It's a quick watch, but I recommend the first, and so far only, season of Breaking Bad. It's not for everyone. Very bleak. But I thought it was quite a bit of fun.

I have a bunch of shows banked from the magic box that I am looking to getting around to watch. Here is what I have ready to go:

Burn Notice
Flight of the Conchords
Mad Men
Generation Kill
The Shield
Weeds - S4
Homicide: Life on the Street
Firefly
Life on Mars
Six Feet Under
Freaks and Geeks
Spaced
Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia

I am currently catching up on Weeds. Really hope this season is better than last. Any suggestions which to tackle next?

memphish said...

I love both Flight of the Conchords and Mad Men. I couldn't hang with Breaking Bad. Just too rough for me, and I couldn't take the view of the guy in his tightie whities.

Mad Men is visually spectacular and I like the story-telling style. Some episodes succeed more than others, but over all, very well done and very good. If you like reading about the episodes after the fact, Alan Sepinwall does excellent recaps. The first link is for Season 1, this one for Season 2.

Flight of the Conchords is corny and funny. I just saw where Season 2 is going to be the last. Sad, but I can see why. Writing those songs has to be hard. I recently watched Jemaine in Eagle vs. Shark. I gave it a 3 out of 5.

Holli

Jordan said...

If McCain were to win and Palin became the VP, the last thing I would want her to do is change her hair style. Like Palmer said, if she did that, she'd lose the naughty librarian look. And as of now, that's the only thing I like about her. :P

Check out this segment from the Late Late Show a year ago where Craig Ferguson referred to her as
a naughty librarian.

It's funny. Because that is the reaction EVERYBODY has when they first see her. I will totally admit that I first saw her on tv, my male brain's initial thought was, "Dang, she's kinda good looking." That, and that she totally looks like an older Tina Fey.

Which leads me to an actual serious question for the ladies here. (I promise it will be the only one).

As a woman, what do you think about McCain's choice of Sarah Palin? I mean, cuz to me it would sorta be insulting if I were a woman. Obviously McCain and his peeps were worried about their standing against Obama. So they went for the big shocker and went with a woman. The thinking of course that she would cause Hilary supporters to vote McCain. Insinuating that women don't care about politics other than wanting a woman in office. Yes, there probably are some militant lesbians out there who will fall for this. But I'd like to think most aren't that shallow. Also, it's obvious (at least to me) that Palin also made the cut based on not looking too shabby. I can just see the conversation behind closed doors.

John McCain: "You know what would be cool? If I could somehow get all those angry Hilary voters to vote for me."

Karl Rove: "Yeah, that would be cool."

JM: "Do you think Hilary would consider being my VP?"

KR: "Uh, I doubt it."

JM: "Dagnamit."

KR: "But what if we were to find you a woman VP who is a Rebuplican?"

JM: "Great idea! ....Do we have any?"

KR: "I dunno. Let me look here.... Uh, we do. Hey now, looky here. There's a female Governor in Alaska."

JM: "Oh yeah?"

KR: "Uh, she only has a year of experience. And you know, that's been our whole campaign against Obama. But I mean, look at her."

JM: "Holy jeepers, she's a looker!"

KR: "Totally! Screw political experience. She gets us the woman vote, plus the men will totally dig the naughty librarian look. We can't lose!"

Like I said yesterday. You just gotta love politics.

I think this sort of sums up your point Jordan.

More seriously I think it's a pathetic attempt for a man determined to give us 4 more years of undermining everything it means for us to be America in terms of separation of powers and equal enforcement of justice to turn heads with a naughty librarian who hasn't successfully run her own family much less something like a country.

I find it kind of hard to believe that she would actually want the job, given the whole 5 kids, young kid with Down syndrome, grandkid on the way thing. She's probably doing it for party loyalty and all that. What I really don't get is that there are definitely female Republicans with more experience that McCain could have tapped (Hutchinson from Texas & Elizabeth Dole come to mind right away for me).

My sister is kind of a Hilary Democrat (although not one of the 'my candidate lost so I'm gonna vote for someone who's stance is completely opposite' Hilary Dems), and she said that she found Palin's selection to be offensive ... like Jordan sort of said, she's really got nothing in common with Hilary except for gender. For me, I've always liked McCain, and I'm really disappointed to see him pick a candidate who's not only an obvious pander towards Hilary Dems, but also one who so strongly touts the views of the religious right.

The Bugle describe Palin as being about as right wing as you can be without having your portrait on a tank. I don't know how fair that is but it was very funny.

PalmerEldritch said...

new theory:

mccain picked her just to piss off people on the blogspot. :p

LOST question only mildly related to Bristol Palin's uterus:

why does mama die when pregnant on the island? did we ever get a reason?

and what does it have to do with the x-rays that Dr. Eyeliner (the 30 year old woman with the naughty bits of a 70 year old) have to do with that?

i dont seem to remember hearing about a rash of old ladies getting knocked up and dying in the second or third trimester after Viagra came out.

i assume that the higher sperm count (super-jizz) is a product of the Island "healing" people and is inconsequential to the pregnancy issue (other than everyone but Kate gunna get knocked up).

also, was Shannon knocked up by Sayid in Beach-side Romance Tent? cuz she sure as fuck died right after. ;)

memphish said...

Last 2 things on Palin. She doesn't piss me off as a VP candidate as much as she just doesn't impress me. She does piss me off as a mom because I think she should be being a mom instead of a candidate given the demands of her family -- pregnant daughter, Downs baby. Those aren't easy things. I know people who have dealt with both, and the time it requires to do them well doesn't mesh with being a VP candidate. Is it a double standard because she's a woman? Yes. To the extent that I see her making different decisions from the ones I would I hold her accountable for them when she holds herself out to me as an example. Furthermore she as an alleged upholder of family values should be valuing her role as a mother and does not seem to be given her time choices.

Last thing -- naming your kid after a Nascar track (Bristol) I suppose you should have expected the teen pregnancy.

As for the Island, I'm willing to bet we don't get too much more about the pregnancy problem on the show. Just no time. I think Juliet's speechifying at some point about the mom's immune system turning on the baby will just end up being the explanation. The more interesting questions are when did this start and can it be stopped? Is Pierre Chang's crying baby Island conceived and born? Post-donkey wheel turning have things changed? I always liked the idea that the pregnancy problem is linked to Ben and his mother dying in childbirth.

Bristol's a city in England... Although i don't think it has a high teen pregnancy rate though... wel compared to the rest of the uk...

Trevor McFur said...

Bristol is also a township just north of Philly. And it wouldn't surprise me at all if there was a high teen pregnancy rate there.

I wouldn't think much of a father who left a family situation similar to Palin's either.

scrdmnkydst said...

i'm going to bet it was a city here first!

Anyone want to bet Daisy Dukes are also a part of this story?

- as a 20+ year vegetarian, bacon's lost much of its allure for me, but bacon-cheeseburger is one of the foods i miss the most.

- Zack & Miri was filmed here in Pittsburgh. They make a nice shout-out with the "Monroeville Zombies" hockey team. I'm pretty sure he's pretending it's New Jersey again (like he did when he filmed "Dogma" here) though. All of the Kevin Smith encounters i heard about involved him leaving a Target or Best Buy.

I'm already committed to Project Runway. I can only commit to one show of overwrought drama queens at a time.

I'm also planning to watch Sarah Palin I think because I want to see a train wreck. She'll probably turn out to be great and disappoint me. Fingers crossed.

Holli

[ally] said...

LOL. Holli I'm thinking the same thing. I really don't wanna like her.

Top Model has disappointed me in the past, but yet I always have to watch it. This year sounds like it'll be an interesting season, but we'll see.

Should I stick Project Runway in my queue? I've always wanted to watch it, but have yet to catch a single episode.

memphish said...

I enjoy Project Runway because the contestants have to actually do something that can be judged objectively, but we get enough of their personalities to start to care about which one stays or goes. I don't like reality shows where personality alone decides your fate. Bravo can be annoying though because they re-run the same commercials over and over and tend to show you what's coming up before it comes up. It's a must record and fast forward through show.

Something called Top Design debuts tonight on Bravo after Project Runway. I've never seen it before, but I assume it will be like Project Runway and Top Chef (and Shear Genius -- yes, I watched most of that too) but with interior design. The host is India Hicks. I have no idea who that is.

[ally] said...

I love Project Runway too. My favourite it Stella. She brings the lols big time. She's well ace. I also though Keith was well good in a moany teenager sort of way.

I love all those silly type of reality shows that are blates in the same mould.

Jordan said...

For the Oklahoma state song, is 'There's a Hole in the Bucket' a choice? What about, 'Welcome to the Dust Bowl'? Or my favorite, 'When's the next train outta this place?'

Seriously though. While I love to bash the state, and have no prob admitting my disdain for the place, isn't this a bit stupid. Voting on a new state song when you have one of the most famous songs in movie history about your state, in which the title and chorus are both the name of your state. I am so sorry you didn't get the job in Alaska Aimee.

And regarding the bacon talk. Chalk me up as a fan. Althogh I have never had anything crazy like bacon fried bacon or anything. On one of the recent Scene/Unseen podcasts, one of the hosts talked about eating chocolate cover bacon strips and how good it was. First person who is able to find it in or near their town and try it gets a prize. As well as probably a trip to the toilet later on.

Just wanted to point out that Palmer used the exact same joke I was planning to in referring to Holli's blog present. Smart ass minds think alike.
