YEAH BABY! what luck - first time i checked tonite and BOOM.

Thanks Kim and Aimee and Japanese Pete (and me)!

Thanks guys - I'm always so lucky that new podcasts tend to come along before I have to do my occasional train trips to Cambridge. Lovely stuff.

From the previous thread:

"-11 days to Lost premier!
Lost Premier!
Lost Premier!
11 days to Lost premier!
Silver Shamrock!"

Andrew - for this reference, I love you large.

Transformers - I just suffered from CGI fatigue after a while - had to take a break.

Keira Knightley? Just the caffeine-free version of Kate Winslet, no?

Cloverfield - only 12 days left... 12 long days.

So, i go away for a few months, and not only is there a frigging forum for MYOKOMw/SAS, there's a ... i forgot what i was going to say there...
Anyway, how've you all been?

Stephanie said...

Hey Jellyman. Welcome back.

From previous thread:
I said check bones but meant cheek bones. I'm pretty sure you know what I meant. There's something about Keira Knightley that I do like. Her attitude or her confidence or something.

Rrb said...

Being English, i'm supposed to think she's gorgeous and brilliant and all that, but don't think so - needs a bloody good meal if you ask me, give me some curves and i'll think about it Keira. have a pie and lay off the salad for a bit.

Anyone given any thought as to whether the 'monster' in Cloverfield is linked to Smokey on the Island of Dharma?

Trevor McFur said...

Andrew--

Responding to the last thread, I actually thought that Shia was incredibly annoying. I had heard great things about him, so maybe I was expecting more than I should have been. But he was part of the problem for me; I kept hoping Bumblebee would accidentally step on him or something.

memphish said...

I felt the exact opposite about Cloverfield from Kim and Jordan, I thought enough of this first part already, bring on the next. To me it wasn't about normal movie stuff, plot, characters, etc.; it was just an extended amusement park ride, and that worked for me.

As for the monster question, no I don't think it's linked to LOST at all. There's a whole backstory for the monster that was developed during the ARG that preceded the movie. I didn't really follow it, but have gleaned a little bit in terms of where it came from/what's responisible for it. There could be a link with Smokey in terms of origins and unexpected consequences, but if there is one it's a macro level link, not a direct equivalence.

I'm going to see Atonement this afternoon. Looking forward to it. Despite all the acting in No Country For Old Men and There Will Be Blood, the darkness of these movies makes me not want to see them.

i thought Shia did a good job with the material presented him, gave the infantile dialogue a shot of naturalism and charm that i don't know that another young actor would give.
I was more mad at the completely useless 'hackers' storyline, the embarassing 'humor' and the complete lack of logic for the final showdown.
i kind of like Michael Bay as an action director, his films are kinetic, snappy and they look pretty, but he works with consistently terrible scripts.

My list of movies I saw this weekend:

Cloverfield - i liked it. some stuff could've been better, but i won't complain too much.

Pan's Labyrinth - Kinda depressing, but good movie.

Juno - Amazing! I cried like a bitch.

Transformers - I love Shia LaBeouf. I liked the movie for the most part. Had Shia not been in it, I don't think I would've liked it as much.

I also saw about 10 minutes of El Cantante. Jesus! that movie is bo-ring.

[ally] said...

thanks for posting the Cloverfield link, Holli. That actually makes sense now.

Rrb said...

I've posted this else where but got no response. I thought it a good topic of discusion?
Well here it goes...
Why would the polar bears leave the zoological island with the "bear cages" and go to the big island. It's all Warm one island is as good as the next!

memphish said...

Redrabbitblue, I think they went there to eat. They got tired of fish biscuits and corn and went looking for some delicious Pearl workers, not to mention actual fish encountered in the water along the way.

Holli

mb said...

redrabbit - on further reflection I'm not sure why I thought this, but I always assumed they were brought to the main island (where the Others village is) for some scientific purpose and then when Dharma got axed they eventually got loose and went roaming. But now I think of it, Tom Friendly talked about the bears figuring out the fish biscut system in the cage, so it must have been Ben & Co.

Of course maybe they just swam :)

memphish said...

Shockingly I'm not the only person who thought a movie was a good idea for a cold holiday. And damn it I missed the Lost trailer again.

TIM! Where have you been?

I stand by my Cloverfield comments. I enjoyed it for the most part, but definately flawed.

Polar Bears, I agree with the food theory. Tired of fish biscuits, and in search of better food. ;)

[ally] said...

last night i met a guy that looked like ralph's long lost twin. i really wanted to take a picture of him to show everyone, but it would've been weird to ask him "can i take your picture? you look like this guy i talk to online"

Jordan said...

Agree with T-Dot. I didn't hate Cloverfield, and I enjoyed it for what it was. It just didn't really register much beyond that with me.

I think it's a rule that whoever I root for in the NFL playoffs is destined to lose. Damn NY-Boston Superbowl. Ugh. Yankee fans and Red Sox fans both get their teams in the Super Bowl. How is that fair? I hate sports sometimes. Who the hell do I go for now? Evil or Eviler? At least it's not New England-Dallas. That would've been much worse.

Anybody here seen Paris Je'Teime? I highly recommend it. Very neat movie with a wonderful feel to it.

Prison Break & American Gladiators tonight. Woo hoo!

[ally] said...

Yay!!! Prison Break tonight!

Is anybody else watching The Sarah Connor Chronicles? I've been watching it, but I can't decide if I like it yet.

Stephanie said...

ROAR!!! Cloverfield was a big hit with Morgan and myself. No motionsickness except for a little queeziness watching the airplanes fly overhead. Thanks Holli for the explanation of the ending soundclip. We stayed to hear it but couldn't make it out. Morgan thought it said "Goodnight Cleveland." She was trying to be funny. My only problem was with the acting. The characters didn't seem very real. That's ok though. I still had a wonderful experience. And that's what it's all about- the experience. Roar was fantastic.

Stephanie said...

Sarah Connor Chronicles is good.

Jordan said...

Yeah, I didn't have a problem with the camera at all. I guess I just don't get motion sickness with movies. Blair Witch didn't bother me at all either. The one film that did make a tad bit dizzy in the theater though was Irreversible. I think maybe 5 people walked out of the theater on that one.

[ally] said...

I like the show, but I think it's because I've never seen the movies. ( i know i'm like one of 5 people that have never seen it ). fans of the movies seem to not be fans of the show.

Jordan said...

I haven't seen the show, but I am not at all interested. Kinda like Ally said, the fact that I know the movies (the first 2, not the crappy 3rd one) so well makes me not want to care too much about the show. It doesn't feel like it fits in with the movies for whatever reason. Plus the kid from Heroes annoys the crap outta me. But I haven't seen it, so maybe it is good.

[ally] said...

The kid from Heroes is not as annoying as he was on Heroes. I actually kinda like him in this show. The movie supposedly picks up after the second movie and doesn't even count the 3rd one.

Anonymous said...

I have to wait until Feb 2nd to watch Cloverfield over here or something, but reading some of your comments is not really making me want to go all that much, you hardly sound enamored by it... Will listen to the girls tomorrow and see what they think of it...

Jelly, if that's a problem, just talk to Ralph. lol. He'll get you excited.

PalmerEldritch said...

"Jelly, if that's a problem, just talk to Ralph. lol. He'll get you excited."

that's what she said.

cloverfield!

i thought it was pretty damned snazzy. it's nothing visually groundbreaking or mind-bogglingly or anything. but its a darn fun movie with a really neat take on the whole GiantMonster genre.

also, it's pretty funny. i enjoyed it. the camera takes some getting used to but that's what the beginning of the movie is for. by the time all hell breaks loose, you're used to the camera and you're ready to go.

jordan, don't rewatch Terminator 2. at least not with your brain on. it's one of those movies that isn't as good as we remember.

i haven't seen the new Terminator show but they seem like a family of mullets. man, those Conners have some sucky hair. i liked Summer Glau in 'The 4400' though.

PrisonBreak tonight. should be fun. can't wait to see what T-Bag's up to.

tim, welcome back by the way.

chris, nice to hear you on the intro.

AMERICAN GLADIATORS!!

/you're welcome, ralph

Trevor McFur said...

I watched Sarah Conner. It's actually not bad. It's much more heavily steeped in the Terminator mythology than I would have expected. It picks up a couple of years after the 2nd; I'm not sure about the continuity with the 3rd film, and I didn't find the 3rd film to be memorable enough to say if there's it makes sense with that film's continuity. The Heroes kid isn't bad, and he's a step above Edward Furlong (or whatever his name was). I also don't mind goofy Summer Glau as the Terminatrix ... I'm glad that they didn't try to get an Ahnold-type to substitute for him. Linda Hamilton is still THE definitive Sarah Conner, though. We'll see how long they can keep it going ... I'm not sure how may eps they have in the can.

We actually found out about a week ago, but have been trying to keep it under wraps until the 'official' announcement was made. We only win tickets, but it really works out for us, because two of our closest friends live in Phoenix and are letting us stay with them. So we even get to go out early and stay a couple of extra days. I'll have plenty of pics for you TV-watching peons at home.

We fly out Thursday night, January 31st.

Wait a second... NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!

PalmerEldritch said...

have your friends in Phoenix DVR it for you. or watch on ABC.com the day after.

that's really great and i'm awfully excited for you. which is weird cuz i feel like i should be insanely jealous and hate you from now on. but i don't.

congrats! we'll all be looking for you in the stands, i'm sure. you'll be the one holding the sign that says "My cat pissed all over my couch and all I got were these lousy SuperBowl tickets!"

Trevor McFur said...

I could always wear my Dharmalars t-shirt. That tends to attract attention.

It's almost a good thing that the Eagles aren't in it this year. I'd be too wound up to just go with the flow and enjoy the whole experience if the Birds were playing.

memphish said...

The realization when you typed out 1/31 cracked me up. We'll have to have a separate Super Bowl post or at least thread to keep you from being spoiled.

I think the Dharmalars shirt is definitely in order. Palmer's sign is a good idea too. Lengthy, but good. Now we just have to work in the poop-eating dog.

Trevor McFur said...

We leave Thursday and come back Tuesday. Unfortunately, I don't think that my friends are Lost fans, but hopefully I can impose upon them to watch that evening (we're supposed to get into AZ around 7 or so). If I do miss it, then I probably won't have time to watch it until we get back. Hopefully I can avoid spoilers; I usually have no problems staying away from the computer on vacation, but you never know. I was on my honeymoon with my wife in Hawaaii during the end of season 2, and we're driving around Volcano Park, listening to some Hawaaiian music, and some DJ comes on and says, "So let's talk about Lost. Holy cow, can you believe that Michael shot Ana and Libby!" Almost crashed into the lava.

I checked the Superbowl's website. No signs allowed, so as much as I like the idea of holding up a sign about the Stinky couch and poop-eatin' dog, it won't happen.

[ally] said...

i will second jordan on the "i thought it was francis and not frank" thing. of course now that everyone knows, those of us who knew of your real identity feel cheated now. j/k!

so you're going to the FUCKING SUPERBOWL!

w00t! w00t!

we will be expecting your superbowl report when you get back. i feel like we're all going with you in spirit. we're all gonna live vicariously through you for that game.

Stephanie said...

Norbit got one nom. What? No Wild Hogs?

Trevor McFur said...

Norbit?!?! What? Does this mean that we'll have to see that video clip of Eddie in the fat suit in the bikini again?

OK, so let's say that we all agree that the makeup for Norbit is amazing, incredible, blah blah blah. Isn't there a point, though, where the movie is SO godawful bad, that no matter how great any individual performance or component is, that it must automatically be striken from any awards consideration outside the Razzies?

Ralph- said...

Congrats to Michael Giacchino!!!!!

and James Newton Howard. Both deserve an oscar!

Jordan said...

I agree with you Trevor. No way in hell Norbit should be allowed to call itself an Oscar nominated film. I think it won a bunch of Razzies actually.

PalmerEldritch said...

Halle Berry is an Oscar winning actress.

/sad commentary on the Oscars

andrew. said...

- I hated "Michael Clayton" so i'm a little annoyed to see it in so many categories, but otherwise i think it's one of the stronger list of Oscar candidates i've seen.

- I wish there was a technical category in animation so that Ratatoulli could win even though the story wasn't very appealing.

- interesting article about Greenwood's score for "There Will Be Blood" being disqualified from Oscar contention.
http://www.variety.com/blog/890000489/post/370020437.html

- the rule for the Lost ARG seems to be that it's a fun diversion as long as you don't visit any related forums. Nerds keep fucking up my nerdy hobby!

Jordan said...

That sucks. I thought that score was outstanding. Also interesting to read about the foreign films that were disqualified.

Trevor McFur said...

There's some real head-scratchers if you look back at supporting actress through the years. Kim Basinger ... Marissa Tomei ... Mira Sorvino. I thought that Halle was deserving for that movie (can't remember the name right now); it's just that she's gone on to do so much crap afterwards (Catwoman, anyone?) that she tends to stick out a bit more.

From IGN's preview of the Lost game:

"The heavy amount of dialogue is an unexpected addition. If only Ubisoft had secured more of the show's actors to provide voice work. Only six characters (Desmond, Ben, Mikhail, Mr. Friendly, Claire and Sun) are authentic. The rest are voice-a-likes. I won't lie; none of the ones I heard are going to fool even a casual fan. It's a shame, because Lost's strongpoint is clearly its high level of authenticity. Heck, every location on the Island has been designed to scale so it looks identical to what's seen on TV. And Michael Giacchino, composer for the TV, provides 60 minutes of music for the game."

Trevor McFur said...

Stay classy, Best Buy.

PalmerEldritch said...

so, Knut's got no game with the lovely lady polar bears? big freakin' deal. he's happy and he's learned to put on a show that keeps people coming to the zoo and buying merchandise to support hundreds of other animals and raise awareness for protecting animals and their environments. the alternative was let a baby bear die. sounds like a win/win situation. the bear gets to live and he's making boatloads of money to help other animals.

p.s. he was a cute yittle baby!!!

Redrabbit - a drunk call is DEFINITELY in order. Also, while your post was entertaining (lol), when you get a sober chance, could you re-phrase your question to me? :) Didn't quite catch what you meant - lol

Trevor McFur said...

Don't call the principal on a snow day.

memphish said...

That call is priceless. I hope her husband brought home some wine, chocolate and flowers because trust me gentlemen no matter which way you slice it, it's his fault that America is now making fun of her. I know that's totally irrational, but it's nevertheless true.

While I actually agree with the wife (gimme an f-in break kid) - that husband definitely has some smoothing to do at home.

It should be said though that You Tube definitely makes you think twice before unleashing on someone - good chance that if it can be posted on You Tube, it will

Trevor McFur said...

I actually can almost sort of start to sympathize with the wife (who knows how obnoxious the kid's original message might have been), but she really loses it at the end when she starts talking about snot-nosed kids and tells him to 'get an education!'

"Quantum of Solace", whatever. I heard rumors that it was going to be called "James Bond" at one point. These Bond titles are ALL Lame.

Before Die Another Day (lame title) came out, it was supposedly going to be called "Beyond the Ice". It was going to be called "Beyond the Ice" for so long that i actually go used to the title and embraced it. Then they come out with Die Another Day, which is a little close to "Tomorrow Never Dies" (lame title).

I heard that Quantum of Solace is a name of one of Ian Fleming's short stories, so who am i to argue? Shoot, i have even heard that the latest movie was going to be named after the Fleming book "Risico".

Whatever the movie is called, i hope that David Arnold and company can come up with another great song for the opening title sequence. Also, i want that Daniel Craig "Gun Barrel Logo" at the beginning of the film!!!

I am fine with "Quantum of Solace", because anything is better than having the words "Gold" "Live" "Die" or "Pussy" in the title!

mb said...

Also, meant to say b4 re: Best Buy....sweet jebus...ugh!

Agreed, mb. It's one thing to remember the dead, it's another to make a profit from it.

I kind of wonder if the obviously new pricetags on those videos mean that they're marked down, or marked up.

that best buy thing reminds me of the people that put ham on sale for hanukkah.

The thing with Die Another Day was it came out after The World Is Not Enough, which after a while started to be referred to as TWINE by some, which meant I can only think DAD when I see reference to Die Another Day.

If you ask me its was a cusaloff cop out there is no way the bears are going to swim that far the water is friggin 80 they would die of heat exhaustion.also there is no glacier in between to rest on. On discovery the polar bears are ALWAYS swimming to the next patch of ice .And the part about them having cubs well i guess they arent affected like the prego women on the island i think ben needs to get juliet a polar bear to solve the pregnacy problem.

redrabbit - I think these drunk posts may have to become a regular thing, I have started to look forward to them :)

I think your asking if I think Sawyer was channeling Kate's "step-dad" (but actually biological dad) Wayne, when he was halfway conscious in bed in the Swan hatch, and my answer is I think so. At the very least, the writers were showing us that Kate equated Sawyer with Wayne in her mind.

Not sure that totally make sense - but I can't think of how else to say it (plus I haven't watched "What Kate Did" in over a year :\

PalmerEldritch said...

"What Kate Did?"

Is that a nickname for Sawyer?

drunkrabbit, episode 8 will not be 2 hours. it is not a finaly. wasnt filmed as such, nor edited thusly. be prepared for a normal, run of the mill one hour ep that was meant to be followed by another episode one week later.

Star Wars: Force Unleashed tech demo

Not the LOST game but another reason to buy a video game console.

Chris JC said...

I love how even when Nintendo are supplying the biggest selling console of the current generation, some people still have the same regard for them as they did during the GameCube's life:

"...combining to make Star Wars: The Force Unleashed for the PS3 and Xbox 360 the ultimate Jedi game..."

And it's on Wii as well. They just didn't bother mentioning that.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, but that's cuz the wii version isn't going to be that game they were talking about. The game they are talking about is way too advanced for the Wii. Wii versions of games are last generation equivilants. Nothing revolutionary like those guys were hyping.

Anonymous said...

Nintendo's console is the best selling because it is basic and appeals to a larger group (casual gamers, young kids, non-gamers, old people) where as the 360 and PS3 only appeal to hard core gamers. Price also plays a big factore. The Wii is a nice little console, but it doesn't come close to comparing with the other truly 'next gen' systems.

Chris JC said...

Fair enough - the Wii version will only be the PS2 version in widescreen anyway.

Everyone will go gaga at this being The Lightsaber Game - but it will probably not offer the autonomous control that people have been wanting (in fact, I'm not entirely sure the Wii can do that) - it'll just have pre-scripted motions triggered by waggle, like Twilight Princess and Red Steel, I say.

Thanks for the sensible rationale, Mrs. Obama.

Chris JC said...

Montana - also fair enough, but the game IS still coming out on the system in some form, so worth mentioning.

It's like hearing that your favourite band had just played a gig at your town, but you didn't know about it because they didn't bother advertising it because it wasn't in New York City.

Not MUCH like that, admittedly, but a bit.

But anyway - as this is the internet and I clearly won't "win" (because whoever types last is the winner) then I retire from this Wii discussion with you fine couple of separate individuals.

PalmerEldritch said...

i want a Wiimote for my PS3.
