- i'm into the new ARG. it feels much more tied into the show and a lot more straightforward. I think we might actually learn some cool stuff about the show.

- the new (and last) season of The Wire has started. You can get the 1st episode on HBO OnDemand. If you haven't seen The Wire yet: 1. what are you doing? It's the best TV show ever made. 2. You really can't jump on. You have to watch it from the beginning. They make no attempt to catch up new viewers. 3. Seriously. You need to watch this show.

-Feels like winter finally showed up.

memphish said...

They ran LOST ads all during the bowl games today and every time I froze and then grinned. Hey Andrew and other ARG followers what do you think the time frame is in game? Sept/Oct 2004? Current day? Some other time?

Holli

PS I've been feeling like that douche Ryan the temp with all this damn thumb typing. I'll be glad to get back to my keyboard tomorrow.

If you were to do a movie review podcast, what would you name it? I'm thinking "Roll Film!"

memphish said...

That sounds good Steph.

Andrew, I have the first season of The Wire and have been meaning to start watching it. Thanks to the grand ol' writers strike, I've been forced to bring tv to me. I'm currently in the middle of Battlestar Gallactic and Prison Break. But I've heard nothing but good things about The Wire. New season starts soon, doesn't it?

-Re: ARG (spoilery if your not caught up)
it's hard to nail down the time.
i think it's pretty close to the disappearance of 815 (Sept. 2004) but long enough past it that Sam has had time to grow despondent about the search attempts.
I guess it has to fall just before they discover the plane in the trench. (maybe Sam's responsible for them finding the plane in the trench?)

- i really like "Roll Film". i tried to come up with a few suggestions but couldn't come up with anything interesting.

- i'm trying to start a blog, but i've been hung up on the name for weeks. whenever i settle on something i like somebody else has the name already. grrr.

andrew. said...

-Jordan: the 1st episode of season 5 is on HBO OnDemand already and airs Sunday (the 6th). The season is 10 episodes long.

Hello All~
Happy 2008! Less than a month til Lost!

******************************************

HAPPY (very belated) BIRTHDAY, HOLLI!

*******************************************

On a scale of 1 to 10, how drunk did everyone get on NYE?

me? i'd say..... 8, but only cause i was taking it easy. why? because we were having frozen margaritas and it was cold.

4 for me. I've mellowed in my old age, but it was still enjoyable.

Watched the Lost ads during the Rose Bowl. First time I've seen anything for the upcoming season. I am quite excited.

Happy New Year!

PalmerEldritch said...

i did not get drunk at all. sorry to disappoint. but i did eat a truck load of chinese food during the day. that was a feat to behold. plate after plate. then cakes and whatnot for dessert.

good times.

ralph, the Lost Season 3 Blu-Rays kick ass and a half.

been checking out the special features and may have to rewatch a few episodes before the 31st to get up to speed.

also, i beat Uncharted and am now preparing to play through again on a harder difficulty level. when i'm not playing Assassin's Creed or Call of Duty 4, that is.

[ally] said...

a truckload? that's a lot of food! some of us celebrate with booze and some of us celebrate with food. sometimes both.

Johnny Chung Lee is a god among nerds.

Chung Lee? Isn't that the girl from Street Fighter? Anyhow, click that link to see a dude create a Head Tracking VR Desktop thingamahoozer from a Wiimote, a laptop, and a TV.

Jordan said...

So that Ally doesn't feel like the only drunk on here, put me down for a 9. We'll leave it at that. lol.

And I know of at least one currently absent blogspotter who belongs to our group of drunkos as well. ;)

[ally] said...

I'm 99% sure of who it is. I know she's a proud member of our team.

Although, just because the blogspotters didn't get drunk on NYE, that doesn't mean they're not drunk the rest of the time. So I don't feel too bad.

elias said...

I had the worst ever hangover on New Year's Day.

So I've shaved off my beard and vowed not to drink for a while.

memphish said...

I'll put myself at a 6. I didn't feel too drunk, but I did drink a goodly amount of wine and champagne. Also, I felt good the next day, so it couldn't have been too bad. Yeah Elias, I knew you'd be drinking and partying for all of us on the older end of the blogspot spectrum.

Holli

[ally] said...

Was the beard shaving part of the getting over the hangover ritual?

Or is it just a "new Elias for the new year" thing?

Trevor McFur said...

Give me a 3. Unfortunately, the champage gave the wife a headache, so she only drank half a glass. It's no fun drinking alone, even on New Year's, so I cut down a bit. Still, someone had to finish that champagne ... could have been a lot worse...

Hey Steph and Kim there's a new Friday Night Lights on tomorrow. Honestly I haven't watched the last one, but hey, stockpiling the DVR is a good thing.

PalmerEldritch said...

that cat is my idol. i wish i could sit around watching tv all day. that'd be pretty sweet.

especially watching my lost blu-rays all day.

who do we think gets the first flashback/flashforward episode?

/now we're LOST related

Stephanie said...

Surely, the first episode won't be Jack-centric. Right? Who's it about time for?

memphish said...

I believe there are spoilers out there to answer the question if you really want to know. But I agree Steph, please not Jack.

Palmer, to follow the game, just go to find815.com The site is very self-explanatory, but if you need help with clues, etc. DarkUFO has a Find815 page. I got caught up start to current in under 30 minutes this morning. There are facebook and myspace pages too, but until anything interesting happens on them I'm ignoring them for now. DocArzt.com is also following the game closely.

Holli

PalmerEldritch said...

when was the last time our boy Desmond got an episode?

holli, do i have to go to all the websites and whatnot to get the full effect? or do you think i can just read the catch-up stuff and still give a damn about the ARG?

Trevor McFur said...

I'd predict Kate as the first dedicated flashfowback (although maybe they do a group flash episode first). The one I'm looking most forward to is Michael, so I hope they get to him before the end of the 8 episodes.

memphish said...

Palmer, just go to find815.com It's more interesting than reading about other people going there.

Holli

Stephanie said...

I am swearing off spoilers. I really mean it this time.
Man, it's like bitch-cold. Holli, it is in the teens there too? This is a day for staying in your jammies and watching tv all day.

aimee is lost said...

Happy New Year everyone! Only 27 days left :)

For the record, I was only about a 6.5 on NYE. I wasn't referring to every female in sight as a "slut" (which is at least a 7) and wasn't trying to pick any fights (usually happens after I reach 8. Jordan knows the result of 9. Wait, what?

PalmerEldritch said...

happy new year, aimee. glad to have you back!

steph, it was 0.7 degrees fahrenheit this morning. joy.

find815 is pretty damned interesting. all two minutes i got to play before my boss' boss' boss came to visit.

memphish said...

Happy New Year Aimee! Hey, I need book recommendations if you've got any. I'm traveling again next week.

Yes it's in the teens here Steph, but I had to make the carpool run, so no PJ day for me.

Holli

Stephanie said...

0.7 degrees fahrenheit? And you people go to work in that weather? That's ridiculous.

aimee is lost said...

Well after watching the season 3 dvd bonus features, I realized I might as well start reading everything by Charles Dickens. Cuselof added two more of his books to the Lost Library in their "book club" segment. But I wouldn't recommend it for you; Dickens is exhausting. Although Our Mutual Friend was a lot of fun.

As far as non-Lost books are concerned, I would recommend "The Book of General Ignorance" which is awesome because it's full of things you thought you knew and slaps you in the face with hilarious truth.

elias said...

the shaving was more of a "I'm on CCTV somewhere with a beard" so best get rid of it quickly ;)

No - just decided that I can't interview for a certain job rocking spaghetti western facial hair.

Happy New Year to everybody and (so far) the most badly-timed Happy Birthday to Holli!

Trevor McFur said...

It's 16 degrees here today, with a windchill of 5. Over the weekend, it's supposed to get into the 40s, and by next week, the 60s.

PalmerEldritch said...

steph, it gets lower. and the Northeast is alone. nor does it have the coldest weather either.

and then there's the windchill like Trevor was talking about. nothing like -20 degree windchill! w00t.

what we need is some tropical LOST goodness on our television sets to keep us warm. alas, we still have 4 weeks to wait.

elias, i was going to shave my beard (which isn't too crazy) but the temperatures as of late made me reconsider. an insulating layer of facial hair goes a long way to keeping you warm. good luck with the job interview, by the way.

aimee, i recommend The Trial of Colonel Sweeto which is a collection of the guy's work over at The Perry Bible Fellowship. that and the Ultimates 2 Volume 2. other than comics and comic books, i'm a reading slacker as of late. i may need to hear some good ol' fashioned TLI podcasts to get my readin' engines roarin'.

memphish said...

I've read Our Mutual Friend, and liked it, but I agree Aimee that I don't really want to tackle too much more Dickens on vacation. I'll check out the other one though. I'm up for laughs.

Thanks for the birthday wishes Elias.

i don't know who it will be for the flashfowback but i know who i don't want it to be, sun/jin. it's not that they're terrible, but they're just not as juicy as the others.

//good to have you back aimee.

aimee is lost said...

Yes, and happy belated birthday to Memphish (why didn't myspace warn me?)

Least desirable choices for flashfowback: Claire, Sun/Jin, ROSE/BERNARD

Top Choices: Desmond, Rousseau, Desmond/Aimee, Desmond/Aimee/Sawyer, or just Vincent.

andrew. said...

- do you think the flashforwards will be character centric this season? That seems to suggest that the characters will all be seperated in the future and isolated from one another. I guess i kind of assumed the future stuff would be the Losties coming tgether to try to fix the fact that they got off the island, and that eventually the present story would catch up with the future flashes, sort of like an extended version of 'The Other 48 Days.'

PalmerEldritch said...

andrew, i'm hoping that the future stories are character specific. but with other characters interacting with the main character of that episode. i'm guessing it's going to be "the characters all have sucky lives with a nebulous past between island time and now, watch as their lives suck and they eventually band together to unstinkify their lives."

and some characters still have interesting pasts to explore. probably.

[ally] said...

Ok, Happy New New! It's taken me that long to recover from my NYD hangover. LOL...just kidding, but out of 10 my drunk level was about a 6 before midnight, then rose to a 9 until 1am, then hovered at about an 7 for the rest of the festivities.

I'm sooooooo excited for LOST! I'm hoping for a Michael flashback first. I'm almost certain they'll do a Jack and/or Kate flash-forward/back for the season premiere. Then I hope it's going to be a Michael centric episode. WAAAAAAAAAAALT!

Assassination of Jesse James

Knocked Up
Atonement

Eastern Promises

Thanks to the blogspot for some of those recommendations.

though I'll have to wait ages for No Country and There Will Be Blood.

Ok, so I just have to say this, after watching david letterman, I LOVE his beard, i hope he keeps it for a while..

I like this new arg, but it seems a but dumbed down to me, like a bad video game that tells you how to do everything, alas, i miss the days of looking through pages of computer code for links and photoshoping pictures to find clues:)

when does BSG come back?, and when the hell is the season 3 soundtrack coming out, i cant find a thing about it.

Chris JC said...

Centigrade/Celsius: The standard swapped a few years back. I grew up knowing it as Centigrade, but it became Celsius with what I recall as being little to no explanation. We don't really use Fahrenheit unless it gets really hot and tabloid newspapers want to print scarily big numbers in front page stories about how hot it is.

Control: I do like myself some Joy Division and so am a big fan of Twenty Four Hour Party People (and that section of it in particular), and it follows that I am still very interested in this one.

Steph, I do recommend Twenty Four Hour Party People as well - it's a very different film but it might interest you to see a different portrayal of the same story, followed by events in the music scene that Joy Division were spearheading. It's not all true - but is gracious in admitting to this very fact within the film itself.

Stephanie said...

Chris, I will look for it.
Ryan, BSG comes back in April I believe.
Palmer, holy crap! I can't stand this cold.

memphish said...

Nice call on the Kelvin Trevor.

Yes, this ARG is pretty dumbed down, but given my level of expertise in these matters, I don't mind too much as long as they keep the release pace up. Making us wait a week to pack a bag--that would be pretty bad.

Also we've got to remember this is just a tidbit for the hardcore fans. There's not going to be anything too earth moving revealed just like in TLE.

Holli

PalmerEldritch said...

PalmerEldritch said...

the new ARG is fun. dumb fun but fun nonetheless. seems like it's designed to be playable by anyone. not just people who can decipher binary and whatnot. and so far it's not gone into crazyville territory like some other LOST ARGs have.

but Sam Thomas is no Rachel Blake.

andrew. said...

- re: the ARG - i could stand for it to introduce some harder puzzles (we are only on chapter 1 of 5 so maybe it will ramp up) but i appreciate the fact that it's relatively straightforward.

I paid attention to the 1st Lost Experience game, and the A.I. movie-connected game. They were neat, but when the games devolved into people decompiling flash files and using registration information to track down unreleased content, the logical progression and overall stories went down the intertubes. By having the game progress mapped out with so much transparency, hopefully this game will be able to avoid that.

The videos have a relatively high production value, and really make the game feel more substantive & connected to the Lost universe.

i think we're going to get some definitive answers about the discovery of the Oceanic 815 plane that was found while our Losties have been surviving on the island. So far it feels like those answers will be a lot more satifying than the nebulous explanation of the numbers we got from the Lost Experience.

-i'm still mad at Leno, Conan, Stewart & Colbert for crossing the picket lines. i understand that they are in a tough spot, trying to keep their shows and crews afloat, but they're undermining the effectiveness of the strike. And even though Letterman has reached a deal with the WGA, his show airing still undermines the strike.
The Networks aren't going to cave if they can keep their numbers up, and if people have fresh content of any sort, they're not going to turn off their TVs.

elias said...

Celsius for me - never bothered to learn temperature in Fahrenheit.

I'll back up Chris about 24hr Party People - classic. Joy Division are one of my very favourites but it's a very bleak story so I've been reluctant to see Control. The DVD will be out here in Feb/ March.

Just bought Conan special edition and Almost Famous - Untitled.

i completely agree with Damon and Foxy that Jack was just completely shitfaced when he was talking about his dad but its sort of a cheap trick to fool the audience. he might as well yelled out the incorrect date and pointed to an old calendar. the line was just a cheap way to fool us into thinking it was a flashback. cheap but effective.

Here's a good Urban Dictionary word of the day to start the week off with:

January 07, 2008: nekkid

Nekkid is not simply being without clothing--It means you are gettin' nekkid for mischevious purposes. [Naked] is natural; nekkid is [naughty].

"Come over quick, Shirley! I'm getting nekkid!"

Nekkid is a long-standing Southern-ism. Lewis Grizzard who was a comic writer and a forerunner of Jeff Foxworthy always defined nekkid as "naked and up to something."

As for murderous cities, mine ranks right up there I'm sure, but I couldn't find a quick 2008 number. We had 170 or so in 2007 which was down, so hey, it was a good year. Memphis statistics are hard to nail down too because there's the city and then there's the Metro area which includes at least 4 extra counties in a total of 3 states.

And yes Ally we have the copper stealing problem too. I know several builders hire nighttime security guards for new housing construction to try to prevent it. And the city is finally supposed to be doing something about it at the scrap metal buyer end as well according to the paper.

Ralph and the rest of the blogspot have good taste when it comes to Crush. You can ask Kim, I was excited when I found out she was going to be a gladiator months ago. Her name is Gina Carano. She's a womens MMA (mixed martial arts) fighter. I first saw her a year ago or so on a pay per view. I was at a friends house watching it with a group of guys. The opening fight was a chick fight. All the guys watching were like, "that hot chick is going to get her ass kicked." But she totally whooped the other girl. It was impressive. I think she's undefeated. I'm pretty sure she could kick my ass. But somehow I don't think I'd mind. :P

I thought AG was awesome. But I could do without that many interviews with the contestants and one extra event. I could also do without the sappy Biggest Loser style intros for the contenders. This is war, not crying time!

I think we should make a blogspot AG drinking game. My first two contributions: one drink every time Wolf howls, and one drink every time Hulk says, "brother". lol.

PalmerEldritch said...

my biggest complaint so far would be that the contestants always try to say something cool before and after the event. "am i ready for the gladiators? yes, i'm ready. my question is, are the gladiators ready for me?!"

shuddup already.

titan is bizarre looking. ralph is right about the CGI thing.

Jordan said...

Titan reminds me of Gaston from Beauty & the Beast.

Because I give in too easily to peer pressure I guess I'll be watching AG tonight. I have to be able to discuss it with y'all.

ok, i can win at "Pyramid" pretty regularly but suck at "Hit & Run" and "Wall." anyone beat those yet?

memphish said...

I just got accidentally spoiled on LOST's newest episodes and who centric they are. I was not on a spoiler website and yet BOOM, there it was. I know some people don't consider that info. spoilers, but I still didn't want to know.

So learn from experience people. Be careful clicking out there.

The most hilarious wedding cake I've ever seen. No word on the groom's cake.

Trevor McFur said...

That poor guy. I think there was a groom cake, and it also looked exactly like her.

I can beat Pyramid too. Hit and Run looks like it should be easy, but I've not been able to get past more than 5. I thought that I had figured out the secret to The Wall when I realized that the player could stretch and contort Ralph Dibny style, but all that got me was maybe 10 more seconds before getting yanked off the wall.

memphish said...

Anyone planning to watch writer-less Stewart and Colbert tonight?

Holli

Trevor McFur said...

I'm gonna at least TiVo both. They shouldn't have any problem getting guests, since they rarely have actors on anyway. Colbert especially should be interesting since he never breaks character.

Chris JC said...

Back when Britain had its own (non-American) Gladiators, we had one called Wolf, but I get the feeling you wouldn't find him too highly imposing.

Oddly, this was at a time when Gladiators (the UK show) had surprisingly high production values, and American Gladiators seemed to be filmed in a school gym.

I'm guessing this has been rectified?

PalmerEldritch said...

maybe a GIANT gymnasium. the eliminator takes a lot of room. the new show has lots of water and looks to cost a bit more than the original.
more Find815.com stuff to do. at least a video to watch, anyhow.

memphish said...

So Palmer was it Chuck and Huck or AG for you last night?

Holli

PalmerEldritch said...

i couldn't get anyone to go with me so i stayed home (away from Huckabee and old people eating chili) and watched American Gladiators.

If you said "Claire's Day" in a Liverpool accent, it'd rhyme with Thursday.

if we ever see Charlie's dad and his rotating accent again, we could prolly hear a Liverpool accent for half a sentence or two.

Did anyone watch The Daily Show & Colbert Report (emphasis on the 't'!). Stewart I thought was pretty flat ... I've seen his standup, and had hoped he'd be a little funnier. The interviewee wasn't too interesting after the first segment, either. Hopefully things will improve once he gets back to politics. Colbert was really good ... I think the fact that he's in character the whole time helped him a lot. Not sure how the shows were unscripted, since both had clips of old shows and of the candidates.

Question: Does anyone here watch Dexter? Has anyone read the books as well? I need someone to talk to about the amazingness that is Dexter! Ahh!!

Oh yeah, Happy New Year! I had the most Canadian New Years ever...we watched the hockey game between the Canucks and the Flames while eating dinner. Seriously, have never felt that Canadian before. Weird.

Sadly - more stuff about UK pricing.

iTunes going 5p cheaper per track.

Erm, hooray? 74p instead of 79p.

The good news is that this will make it only 50.66% more than the US price instead of 54.08% like it is at the moment.

All in all a triumphant victory... or something.

As for Dexter - I've only seen a few. My friend Lauren is a large fan of the TV series, but found the novels to be the most impenetrable, pretentious guff she'd read in ages. I've not read them, so this is not my opinion.

PalmerEldritch said...

is there VAT for iTunes downloads?

Chris JC said...

I believe so, yes. I was having this discussion just yesterday about pricing in the UK and how our various taxes pay for things like the National Health Service, which is a good thing. But as a consumer you aren't really sure HOW much goes to various different causes and how much is misattributed by your elected officials. The obvious runner you will have seen in all my complaints is that generally things cost twice as much here which is hard to swallow, health service or not. Even with the difference of that service, we as nations still pay for the same things through taxation (police, fire departments, education etc) so it can be hard for a layman such as myself to see how it's possible.

I'm sure someone with a genuine knowledge of the subject could sit me down and explain it all and tell me that I'm probably wrong about what VAT pays for and what it doesn't, but it doesn't stop it being irritating.

RRP of Region 2 PAL boxset of LOST season3 is about $118.

PalmerEldritch said...

amazon.com has LOST seasons 1 and 2 for about $33 bucks each. that totals $66. which is... 40 pounds?

season 3 is $40. have a region 1 player and an NTSC-compatible tv?

Chris JC said...

Bless you for looking into that, Palmer, that's cool - and yes I can very easily play US discs (ironically, something that can't easily be done the other way around) and I regularly import stuff - but that's never really been my argument. Most poor sods here don't realise how much difference there is.

Elias, I believe, has imported all three seasons of LOST from the US. My seasons one and two are PAL, though, so there's a bit of me that wants to keep that going. It seems a bit weird to have one in a different television standard.

Also, once you factor in the postage and the customs and excise charge (they WILL sting you for daring to try saving money probably to the tune of somewhere around, say, $18-19) I'm not sure how much money you would end up saving.

Anyway - here I go again.

Lost season 4's nearly on, kids!

HUSSSSSSSSS!

gillian-
start up a threat on the boards, i know there's a few people that have seen dexter. i've only seen season 1, but i'll be more than happy to talk about it.

PalmerEldritch said...

i hear Dexter is pretty darn good. never seen it though. maybe via Hulu or Netflix if i run out of other stuff to watch during the writer's strike.

andrew. said...

- i watched Dexter. i banged out the 1st season in the week before season 2 came on and then watched that in broadcast.
I liked it over all, but there were a lot of moments where i thought about abandoning it. I liked the fact that it kept me guessing about what was going to happen next and that outweighed how terrible the dialogue was.

- less that 23 (Kablamo) days until LOST!

- wow. i'm surprised it took them that long to get around to action figures (the prefered term for boys). They really nailed the glassy-eyed expression on the Peter doll (TWSS (ewwww))

-i've been kind of looking forward to this period of no TV. Partly because i'm hoping to detox a little and up my productivity. Partly because i'm waiting for America to realize that there's no new TV & freak out.

- i haven't seen any syphillis ads here in Pittsburgh, but we do get a lot of culinary school commercials.

-oops, 9pm, time for the Lost ARG to update & crash!
