The Dharmalars: SOS-316

When Craig stopped doing the "Make Your Own Kind of Music with Scott and Steve" podcast three years ago, I was pretty disappointed. Three weeks had past and I had come up with an idea to gather some other Lost podcasters and die hard "MYOKOM" fans to send some audio files and do a show. Armed Ryan's laptop and my friend Ben, we started to record reviews based on the episodes that Craig missed in hopes that he would return.

The idea worked! Craig returned with Ryan Howard and made the announcement that the Dharmalars would continue on his feed. I remember listening to that show and thinking, What? I had fun doing the show, so I figured that it couldn't hurt doing a show. I mean, i was already talking about Lost with Ben, i might as well record it. People seemed to enjoy it, so the show went on.

After three years of doing the show, I just could not go on. I have been struggling all season to keep up with the show. It takes a lot of time out of my already busy schedule and of all the things in my life going on right now, this, unfortunately is the most expendable. I love this show to death. Just talking about canceling it makes me upset.

I love the show with all my heart and I have had a blast over the last three years editing and posting it. I just wanted to let everyone know that I will continue to check emails, post on scottandsteve.blogspot.com and check the myspace page. I highly encourage everyone to check out The Transmission, The Lost Podcast with Jay and Jack and especially The Lost Initiative with Kim and Aimee. I hope that Jimmy continues the Lost Score. He is a major part of the dharmalars and my favorite.

It is hard to say goodbye, but i hope that i see you in line for the Lost Panel at this year's comic con!

I dance on your grave, Dharmalars podcast!

i'm not gunna lie. this sucks. i'm pretty sad to see the Dharmalars go.

but i get where Ralph is coming from. it's no good to be going full speed without a break (work, family, etc). everybody needs time when they can just decompress and relax. without that, you just get more and more stressed out.

whenever you need to shoot the shit about LOST, Ace of Cakes, Green Lantern Corp, or anything else, we're here for you. same goes for America's Favorite Johnson, Ben.

also, Ryan needs a facebook account. c'mon!

Stephanie said...

And I just ordered a Dharmalars t-shirt too.

there will be one more episode that will update you on everything that is going on. i think that the "Knee Jerks" will continue in one form or another. those take like 15 minutes from the time i hit record til the time it is on youtube.

I am going to comic con, ben was talking about maybe not going the whole weekend. but i WILL be wearing my Dharmalars shirt at the panel!

The dharmalarmy is still strong and who knows, the show may return in the future. it is just a tough time right now.

Stephanie said...

I can not get to the TLI live show on ustream via my iPod. Help, Alirio!

scrdmnkydst said...

Well that recording of TLI went by pretty quick.

Alirio said...

Steph: I too am unable to find the show with that app. I guess they only allow access I certain shows??? Sucks.

Sorry folks...the ustream thing isn't working properly w/o my webcam

One day we'll figure it out

memphish said...

One suggestion Ralph. We are going to have hiatus from hell once again. Maybe you guys could do a few Dharmalars covering episodes you haven't discussed when we're all starving for LOST content.

Keep in touch Ralph,Ben,& Ryan we all will miss the "irony" LOL you bring to the Lost world.

Ralph, Ben, and Producer Ryan... You will be missed. I love your guys sense of humor. Your take on a lost podcast was great. I never missed an episode. I liked the little "podcast rivalry" you guys seemed to be starting up with Jay and Jack too.

Hopefully I get to hear from you guys sometime soon.
I know what you do is something that must take a lot of time out of your lives. Good luck to you guys.
Looking forward to the final episode.

ralph, just in case i'm going again, get comic-con off from work so you can enjoy it instead of having to do all that buying stuff.

also, on a non-ralph related note, i'm about to watch bruce campbell's new movie, "My Name is Bruce" tonight. whatever happened with the blogspot's AUTOGRAPHED "If Chins Could Kill?" did Alirio sell it on e-bay and retire?

Ralph- said...

i will be at comic con. i probably wont be able to avoid work, but if i dont do a show, then i will have more time to hang out and enjoy lost day and burger day!!

DHARMALOVE!

Take it easy, kids.

Though, this does mean that people will now NEVER hear my Karaoke version of Total Eclipse of the Heart with extra bass guitar.

I did the Oscar Pool, played it pretty safe. I wish they didn't but up their own picks as pretty much everything I had already decided to vote for was "Bagger's Pick", with a couple of exceptions (for example, Herlihy and I both favoured Frank Langella over Mickey Rourke). The "Bagger Picks" came in handy on the last two that I had no knowledge of, though, so fair enough.

I agree in that category. I wanted sooooo much for Rourke to win. Dang it!

So who won the Oscar Pool?

Trevor McFur said...

I think that your irrational dislike of Sean Penn is preventing you appreciating his performance.

Trevor McFur said...

I was really hoping that someone in our group would beat the NYT Bagger.

Mr. Bill said...

Hey Jordan,
Don't hold back so much, how do you really feel about Sean Penn. :D

Good job Tdot on the pool, I messed up by not voting in 4 categories. Doh!

Jordan said...

You might be right Trevor. But I still do not think that Sean Penn was that great. Mickey Rourke gave a performance for the ages in my opinion. Sean Penn made faces and voices and giggled and cried. That is bullshit. "But it was playing a gay man fighting for gay rights so it makes it better!!!"

Bite me acadmemy. And anybody who thinks Sean Penn is any good.

Seriously. Watch Milk, and then go and watch I am Sam. Not that different of a performance. Quite frankly, if I were a gay person, I'd find that offensive.

Jordan said...

Yeah, and the dude who won Original Screenplay for Milk, that was bullshit too. FUCK MILK. THAT MOVIE SUCKED ASS!! (PUN INTENDED)

t-dot kim said...

I would re-act the same way if Anne Hathaway won for Rachel Getting Married, now THAT movie SUCKED ASS!

PalmerEldritch said...

i'm left making the conclusion that Sean Penn won on the merits of Harvey Milk the man and not on his own acting skills. i haven't seen Milk but i've never been impressed with Sean Penn and was blown away by Rourke's performance in The Wrestler.

also, Sean Penn is, historically, a huge douche.

Right on Palmer. Totally agree.

- Ha ha, i got crushed. It wouldn't be the Oscars otherwise.

- i wanted Mickey Rourke to win. I thought it was an amazing performance and definitely this year's best. I think Mickey Rourke is a huge asshole in real life. But I was also really impressed with Sean Penn's performance, and that's as someone who thinks that he's usually overrated and showy, and that his Oscar-winning performance in Mystic River is terrible. I never subjected myself to I Am Sam, so i can't judge how similar the roles are.

- I am a huge Danny Boyle fan, so i'm very happy with his success, but Slumdog Millionaire is not the movie I want him to win with.

- I'm annoyed that Benjamin Button one for both make-up & visual effects. I hated that movie on many levels but I was willing to give it credit in the technical areas. I just think that they should have picked a category for the de-aging process. Was it a visual effect or digital make-up? I suspect that the Oscar folks got tired of picking winners from whatever big monster movie came out, and they felt like they had already give Guillermo Del Toro the make-up award for Pan's Labrynth, but Hellboy's make-up was really incredible.

andrew. said...

woah. i can't believe i typed one instead of won. i'm pleading exhaustion.

Wow this is bad. Dharmalars were the best. I was like why won't their show for 316 show up!!! Now I'm in tears....no really but this sucks. I knew something was up since they were only doing like 35 min episodes once a week and there was nothing from like August of last year to January, but life is more important than podcasting.

I don't have an episode for TLI on 316 yet either. I thought you all recorded on Thursdays? Why no show yet.

Ben Ralph and Ryan will be sorely missed...

of the five movies up for best picture... I do think Slumdog was the best, so I am happy for them. Although, I honestly think Wall-E was my favorite and the the best movie of the year. Dark Knight should have been nominated too.

I watched Frost/Nixon yesterday, and thought that Frank Langella was amazing as Nixon. I agree that Mickey Rourke should have won though. He did have the best performance of the year. I think Kate Winslets win was deserving, she was great in the Reader.

andrew. said...

- Why wasn't Kimberly Joseph up for an Academy Award for her KFC commercials?!!!

Jordan said...

If she was, Walt should've been for his Tyson Chicken commercial.

Chris JC said...

Pun intended? Those crazy gay guys and their ass sucking.

I am appalled that the song from Wall-E didn't win because the Academy were being so trendy about cosying up to Indians instead of going down the more traditional route of robots.

The three movies nominated for make up were Button, The Dark Knight and Hellboy II - deciding to be canny I went for Button but in reality, regardless how you feel about the film, the Hellboy movie's make up is amazing. Well designed, well realised and flawlessly applied. Despite that I was never under the illusion it would win as, despite my sarcastic comments at the start of this post, films rarely just win on the merit they were nominated for. Button is a long, worthy film and Hellboy II is a silly kickabout sequel with Luke Goss. Also, do you tend to find that when make up is really outlandish people tend to assume that it's actually the work of the special effects department?

Graft said...

Aw, damn. You guys were the best. I guess The Dharmalars was a sacrifice Ralph's life demanded. Cue Giacchino's "Life and Death".

scrdmnkydst said...

Frank Langella should have won best actor. He was well good in Frost/Nixon.

Sean Penn annoys me for numerous reasons, therefore he shouldn't have won.

Chris JC said...

I note that both of us liberal benders voted for Langella in the pool. Intiguing, eh?

scrdmnkydst said...

Yeah. I thought Frost/Nixon was amazing, if anything though, I thought that Michael Sheen should have been nominated for Best Actor.

I didn't like Sean Penn at all. I don't like him in any of his films, he's a massively egotistical twat. I knew that he was going to win, everybody thought that Rourke was going to win, which made it certain he wasn't going to. But then add ontop that Penn was playing a minority that suffered loads and blah blah blah. stop moaning and whining, we've been accepted. we can vote, we can get on the same bus as regular folk, what more do these people want...

-Somehow I ended up registering for Andrew's Oscar Ballot page and couldn't add mine to Kim's. NYTimes site sucks.
-I get confused when making Oscar picks between who I want to win and who I think will win. For that reason, making picks aren't that important to me.
-Hugh Jackman did a good job even though he wasn't funny. I guess if they intended the show to be funny they would have chosen a comedian. Next year, I vote for Will Smith. "Boom Goes the Dynamite"
-Favorite dresses-Jennifer Anniston and Tina Fey.
-Funniest joke- Jack Black betting his DreamWorks paycheck on Pyxar.
-Best Acceptance Speech- Dustin Lance Black- Why couldn't his screenplay be as inspiring as his speech?
-Biggest disappointment- Of course it was those commie homo-loving sons of gun giving the award to the wrong actor.
-I can see why Kim didn't like Rachel Getting Married. I loved it. At the point during one of Rachel and Kym's many fights when she let it slip she was pregnant, the look on Kym's face. Wow! I thought Give that Oscar to Ann Hathaway right now!

Good morning all...

Well, that Oscar show certainly riled a lot of you, didn't it? I'm pretty much fine with all the choices... I feel it was arguably the least important Oscar night in history...I am imagining the ratings to be somewhat down. Hugh Jackman did a good job...but I only got parts of it anyway. "Top Chef" was far more fun.

Jack Finally Believes said...

Conan O'brien's final show...I have been a big fan of Late night since about 2000 and I saw more than half of his episodes since then (not even close to most) but anyway the best skit he ever did that I saw was the old fashioned baseball thing and I never forgot it. Then when he started doing the best clips of the show every night for the last 2 weeks it was killing me that he didn't show it. So on the final episode I had absolutely no hope that he would show it. Turns out it was his favorite clip. When he started explaining it "A few years ago we went out to Long Island for an old fashioned baseball...." I went berserk. It was the most exciting thing that happened to me this year. I love that show and Jimmy Fallon is terrible. He is the guy that ruined being a Red Sox fan. Conan I hope your format doesn't change for the Tonight show fatcats.

Jordan said...

Domo Arigato, Mr Roboto guy was awesome. I totally would do that if I didn't speak much English.

And how famouse does the Boom Goes the Dynamite kid feel now? Yeah, yeah. He's had his bumbling video watching millions upon millions of times, and has numerous Sportscenter and play by player announcers quote him. But Will Smith on the Oscars? Damn.

Herlihy, Liked your thoughts on Sean Penn. Well said.

Sorry for my rants on Penn and the academy last night. As they were just slightly alcohol-fueled. But I still stand by them. It's not just that I think Sean Penn sucks. He just simply was not the better man. And yes, he won because of the character he played, not his performance. And that is lame.

Terry O'Locke, First of all welcome to the blog. But just one brief word to the wise. Before Ralph quit the dharmalars, the big topic on the board was about podcasting fatigue. I think Kim said, "sometimes I wish I didn't do a podcast". I think the editing is quite the chore sometimes. So it's prob not the coolest thing to annoy with "where isn't the podcast up yet?" comments. Just a thought.

Jordan said...

Oh, prob should change the screen name. lol.

Next will be this avatar. Cuz I can't be staring at baconators anymore. It's bad for my health.

Jordan said...

where = why.

Jimmy said...

Yes the fatigue can be very hard to deal with. I think you have to strike a happy balance. Yes...it is fair to say that listeners should realize that an unpaid, free, voluntary service doesn't warrant criticism when it is a day or so late. At the same time, when you have literally thousands of listeners who love your show and look forward to it weekly, you should be aware that people truly do miss it, want it etc, and it's not unreasonable for them to be disappointed when it doesn't show up. Or worse, when it is suddenly yanked!

Like I said, it's balance.

Jordan said...

Yes. Balance is the key to the universe. Or am I thinking about the Force?

Chris JC said...

You're thinking of the Cosmic Key from the Masters of the Universe movie featuring Oscar hopeful Frank Langella as Skeletor.

The movie that proves once and for all that the universe is in the lydian mode.

Jimmy said...

Well it's certainly not my Checking account balance, I know that for sure....

(I think it's The Island telling us that we shouldn't do a show this week, hummmm)

I have yet to watch the final episode of Conan. I've recorded it, but still haven't had time to watch. Sad to say, I've been catching up on Supernatural...tee hee hee. What?? It's a guilty pleasure. Steph I owe you big time for introducing me to the show. For about 3 episodes I was all about Sam, but my heart belongs with Dean.

Speaking of guilty pleasures, Kim, I'm watching Buffy at the moment. Can't really recommend it though. I hear it gets better.

I know I'm gonna come off totally Milky here, but does anyone watch American Idol? How did Anoop not make it? Michael Sarver is not top 12 material. And I totally feel for the guy, I do, but if they shove Danny Gokey's sad story down our throats anymore, I might have to stop watching.

And to keep it relevant, still bummed about the Dharmalars. Also, it seemed like they did end up scaling back the focus on Giacchino.

Kim,

it's the first time I could ever have remembered Sophia Loren looking bad! Yes, she's 77...has been amazing practically forever, but I was just glad I didn't see it in 1080p !

Stephanie said...

Holder, I agree with you about AI. I believe someone told me Anoop still has a chance with The Wild Card.

James said...

That was Jimmy by the way, was signed in as the Dharmalars.

Holder...your not the only one bummed about the Dharmalars!

memphish said...

A guy on Jay and Jack is recycling Ralph's ancient theory that the prop guy for the show is Jacob.

Jimmy, I saw her in 1080i. YIKES! Yeah, I agree. She is old, but has always looked good for her age. She looked hideous!!!

Holder, I shamefully admit to watching AI. Anoop was better than Sarver. But Ricky was better than both, and he didn't make it either. Sarver made it because he appeals to middle America and gets the country vote. I really don't like the format this year. Really stacks things overly for the people who were featured and pimped by AI during the audition and hollywood rounds.

Jordan said...

Oh, and Steph is dead right on something she said IMO. I'll just leave it at that.

Chris JC said...

British political correctness?

Jordan said...

No. Anoop still having a chance at the wild card round. He's a lock.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!

I return from 3 days of bedrest and fever (no joke) and WHOA!! Talk about being out of the loop!

Damn, I am truly going to miss you guys every week.
But as disappointed as I am there is absolutely no way in hell I could blame you for stopping (especially after taking a week off myself). It's a lot more work than you imagine when you get the genuinely exciting idea in your head to do a podcast.
I will look forward to the tribute show when it arrives.

RE: the BBC presenter - GOOD ON the beeb for standing by her. I'm pretty sure it's not preschoolers who are having issues with her. I notice the quotes from parents talk of their CONCERN that the woman's image MAY give children nightmares. Any ACTUAL problems/reports of fright? If there are then I stand corrected.

Did anyone besides me think that Ben Stiller was hilarious? He was spot-on, and, especially considering that the guy just won an Oscar 2 or 3 years ago, so much meaner than I thought they'd let him be.

Mr. Bill said...

On AI, it does suck that his wife died but something like Danny Gokey's sad story played out in the recent Skins tv show. Did anyone see that one?

scrdmnkydst said...

The episode of Skins where Freddi'es sister Karen uses her mother's death as a sob story so she can get sympathy votes on that well known reality TV sho Search For A Sexxbomb?

Mr. Bill said...

That is it exactly! I don't really think that "Danny" is doing that but that is definitely how the AI producers are hypeing it up.

memphish said...

The New Yorker is reporting that DarkUFO is reporting that ABC is reporting that there will be no new episode on March 11. Which is so good for me as I will be on Spring Break.

ok... looking for Mr Bill's LOST podcast...

PalmerEldritch said...

couldnt find a subscribe link to post here. but itunes is downloading the heck out of it. woo-hoo!

Jordan said...

Note to all. Do not try to domesticate a chimpanzee. Not worth it. YIKES!

Mr. Bill said...

Thanks Palmer, here is the itunes link.

andrew. said...

- Jordan - are you trying to domesticate a chimpanzee or were you refering to this or this?

- all caught up on Big Love. Another great HBO show. I was pretty sure i'd like it but always felt too far behind. Spoiler Alert: Ginnifer Goodwin bleaching her hair blonde was just as heartbreaking as when Laura Prepon did it.

John V. Holder III said...

As far as Lost's prop guy being Jacob...there was a commentary in the season 3 dvd, or maybe it was on the Official Lost Podcast, where D and C flat out said that the prop guy was acting as Jacob. So yeah, that's who it is.

Jordan said...

Yes Andrew. Was referencing the crazy chimp eat ate his owner/lover's face off. Yeesh.

John V. Holder III said...

I read an interesting point somewhere about how Lapidus gave us some useless information about himself...his middle initial, J. I wonder why...I'm sure he isn't Jacob, but why would they give us that info?

Mr. Bill said...

I'm glad you said that Holder, on my re watch of that episode Lapidis announced his name and when said "Sit back, relax..." I instantly thought of the Jay and Jack podcast.

I know...it sounds stupid but with the middle initial J, or even more stupid Jay...I'm just sayin... :D

John V. Holder III said...

Speaking of Jay and Jack, Jay has been throwing out "thats what she said" like it's nobody's business. What's the deal? That's TLI's...it just doesn't feel right when Jay does it.

Jack Finally Believes said...

So what happens to Jimmy? I love the soundtracks on this show.

Stephanie said...

Holder, Jay's girlfriend is a big TWSSer.

TWSSing: Everyone's doing it. Everyone's doing it all the time, too much and so frequently that it's getting to be beyond pleasurable and actually getting to be a bit painful.

I now can put on a yellow shirt and feel comfortable:)

Chris JC said...

That ThEmIsFiTiShErE blog I mentioned the other day posted that same picture to the usual comment cries of "Photoshop!". even going as far as to explaining how "The Misfit" could have made it more realistic looking.

It truly is hilarious watching people not quite getting that site.

Ralph- said...

The funny thing is that Michael Scott was using That's What She Said as if it were still a relevant joke, but the irony (?) is that he made it relevant again and by doing so it is starting to become unhip to say it again. Where does that leave Michael Scott?

Jordan said...

Haha. Exactly Ralph. I was gonna say the same thing. TWSS came back into common usage because The Office used it as a joke. In that Michael Scott said it way too much. Life immitating art in this case. lol.

I'm particularly looking forward to this one. Trying not to big it up too much.

That said, I've heard people saying that 316 was the weakest of the season so far, yet I thought it was by far the best. I guess we all want different stuff from out LOST

Totally bummed about this. Hopefully you guys will be back again sometime sooner than you expect.
