Happy Birthday, Bitches

Ten years ago, Oceanic 815 crashed into 18.65 million televisions, and the modern geek was born. 

This was before the days of smartphones and tablets and Netflix binges. We suffered together through 8-month hiatuses, writer's strikes, and Nikki and Paolo. 

In September 2004, a Google search of the word "podcast" produced 24 results. Today, there are 23,100,000. By March 2009, six of the top ten tv/film podcasts were Lost-related. The other four were NPR, filmspotting, screenwriting, and porn. That's right, people wanted to talk about Lost more than porn.

We developed the most intensely loyal fan community the world had ever seen since Trekkies. We collaborated on a global scale during ARGs, fought against American Idol, and made the fucking President's State of the Union Address our bitch.

We were dorks before dorks were cool. We made geek sexy, and turned obsession into an artform.

I forgot what a fun episode Tricia Tanaka Is Dead was. I do remember what a clusterfuck Season 3 was 'on the hole', and this episode was a much needed victory for the characters. Thank God for Hurley episodes.

Your words of encouragement, your interaction, and the fun you provided over the run of one of television's greatest shows has been unparalleled. In this age of snarky, negative internet culture, it's really amazing we were able to communicate and connect over the mutual love of a TV program. Dylan Speed, Ryan Howard, and I all had a blast doing the MYOKOM with SAS podcast and developing relationships with everyone who emailed, called in, and contributed to this blog. Our close friendships with Ralph, Aimee, and Kim are a direct result from the warmth and community-ness atmosphere of this unique world of social connection. I never thought a simple podcast would lead to such a wonderful brethren of like mined, smart, and civil bunch of people actively participating in good natured discourse without the hate and snarkiness of most message board communities. I loved the show "Lost" and I loved every second of participating in the MYOKOM, Dharmalar, and TLI world.
