Saw "Pan's Labyrinth" today. Its absolutely brilliant, best film this year in my book.

http://www.panslabyrinth.com/

Set in 1940's facist spain, its kind of a mix between horror, fantasy and war drama.

Nice Pic Aimee. You always know how to pick them!!!

On a side note, THREE WEEKS TILL COLLEGE IS OVER... but then boo the real world.

Saw the Bond today. It was a really good movie. They did a really good job building Bond's character and making the action count. I just wish they'd had enough sense to edit out the 40 minute coda.

Mike, I was wondering what was up with the graduation...you never gave us a follow-up from your chat with the Dean. I'm glad to know everything worked out!! Just think, six more months and you get to be like me (making student loan payments).

Why are you assuming I posted this picture? Granted, I did of course, but still...am I that predictable? Not much going on in the podcast department, so I'm only trying to help out around here!

I just saw Casino Royale tonight. I thought it was good, but I've only seen a few Bond films, so educated comparisons will have to be saved for Bondies like Ralph. Was this done on purpose or does Daniel Craig have only one facial expression? It was a little reminiscent of Zoolander's "Blue Steel". Just curious. He had some great lines, and the action scenes were okay. They didn't go over-the-top on gadgets or with the girls, which I liked.

aimee is lost said...

sorry guys; that was me (Aimee)

Stephanie said...

This is frustrating. I can't see the picture because of Big Brother.
And I can't see Bond until next weekend. UGHFGFGR!!!

aimee is lost said...

Bond was cool. But it made me have this really dramatic dream last night that some goons were going to execute my dad, so in a sense, the film has psychological afteraffects. I woke up crying, and my Sunday is kind of shot right now, because I feel like my dad just died. Watch it at your own risk.

Mike Campbell said...

oh no i was about to go see it. But i want happy dreams of joy

compare and contrast the Jorge Garcia pics - Pilot ep. vs. Letterman. Dude's lost some serious weight.

ooh Steeler's game!

Mike, dont let me down. and dont let yourself down. put down the guitar and go see Casino Royale, you wont be disapointed. shit take the guitar with you, and rock out to the James Bond theme!

Jimmy said...

I'm still planning on getting to it (Bond).

Ralph...hate to tell you, mate, but my previous posts Thanksgiving description was all real! If anything, I eat well :)

I get the impression., Aimee, that you're not that struck with Daniel Craig?

Ralph- said...

that is the craziest meal that i ever heard anyone describe. nice.

aimee is lost said...

Actually Jimmy, I think he's the best looking Bond so far. Way sexier than that beanpole Pierce Brosnan. It was just funny that he always seemed to have the same facial expression.

Mike Campbell said...

I liked the new Bond it was good. But it did beat Return of the King for most Endings in one movie. That thing didn't want to end. Once i was like "come on kill a few more people and be done with it"

But i loved it. After the last three this makes up for it. I thought Craig was good.

aimee is lost said...

He looked almost as good as Sawyer with his shirt off.

Stephanie said...

Aimee, I had almost decided to let my 8 year-old see Bond. She may have to stay home. What do you think?

aimee is lost said...

There isn't really any gratuitous sex scenes, and I think I only saw one partial booby shot, but I'm not even sure I saw it.

There's fighting and violence, but not gore. I'm not a parent, so I can't really say, because if it traumatizes your child it'll be my fault. But I don't think it's that bad.

aimee is lost said...

I guess it depends on how sensitive he/she might be, and how you might have sheltered him/her in the past.

Stephanie said...

Thanks Aimee. It sounds like she can handle it.

aimee is lost said...

Yeah, an 8 year old from today's generation most likely could. Nothing happens in the film that hasn't already happened in their schoolyard.

Stephanie said...

She's a pretty mature kid. She's out grown children's shows and enjoys more complicated subjects. She shares her mother's love of Star Wars, James Bond and Lost. She's funny, she's trying to understand this romance thing. The Saywer/Kate/Jack love triangle is ridiculous to her.

Stephanie said...

Yeah, an 8 year-old today is like a 14 year-old back in my time.

aimee is lost said...

That's hilarious that an 8 year old can see through the Jack-Kate-Sawyer bullshit.

aimee is lost said...

I just saw the trailer for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (July 2007)...woohoo!

Stephanie said...

Who was it talking about The Fountain?
http://www.sceneunseenpodcast.com/index.html
This is an interview with Darren Aronofsky. Very interesting.

Mike Campbell said...

AIMEE don't be excited for the Harry Potter movies. Now that you are reading the books it will make you want to slit your wrists while watching those movies. It sucks so much. The previews are good but they murdered the forth book with that piece of crap movie.

Sorry for the slight rant but i always get so excited for the movie and then very let down.

Stephanie said...

Isn't that guy grown yet?

aimee is lost said...

Those books were so much fun to read! I was so behind the Harry Potter curve (what, did the first one come out like 10 years ago?)

I was appalled at the low-quality films they churned out, but at this point, I don't really care. I'm just excited to see a new one. And Gary Oldman rules. He gets a bigger role in Phoenix, which makes me happy.

Jimmy said...

I'm with Jellyman,

I hate Harry Potter. Great for kids, yes I know. But there's something about it all that makes me want to knock all there heads together!

Isn''t he looking creepy now he's getting older?

Steph, I'm sure Bond would be fine for 8 years old? Just my thoughts.

aimee is lost said...

That's what I thought about Harry Potter when they published the first books and it became this adult reading phenomenon. I couldn't understand why so many adults were obsessed with the books, so I refused to be a part of it for years.

The only reason I actually read the first one was because Hurley obligated me to. It was a quick and fun read, and I wanted to see what happened next, so I went out and grabbed the other 5 books to see the whole story. They're not going to change the world, but they are entertaining. Not everything is meant to be deep, profound or superbly intellectual. Sometimes reading and storytelling is just fun.

Ralph- said...

Harry Potter is annoying to me and the worse thing is, is that i have been suckered into seeing all of them in the theater with the exception of the second one. it is funny, but everyone said that the second one was better than the first, i ended up seeing it on video and it blew hard! i liked the 3rd one alright, but that 4th one sucked unholy balls. they had this build up for these wizard games and they said that only the strongest wizards would be able to survive, but the competitions were lame, and harry potter would just shoot bullets out of his wand to win all the events. there was no twist to the events. i thought at least the dragon even, harry would have learned that it is not important to slay the dragon, but rather, he should tame the dragon. he did not do anything that the other wizards didnt do, he was just able to outrun his dragon...weak. these stories need to be handled a little more clever with a bit of drama in there. the thing that pisses me off the most, is that i will be there at the theater seeing part 5.

aimee is lost said...

They can't all be Oscar contenders, and none of them have lived up to the expectations of the readers, but honestly, has ANY FILM IN HISTORY that was originally a book accomplished this, with the exception of maybe LOTR? No.

In fact, I think this exact topic was a rant from one of the MYOKOM w/SAS podcasts, how people should stop bitching about stuff like that. We already know book-films "suck unholy balls", Ralph.

So what is it that we're arguing about? We all seem to be in agreement here. I was simply putting forth the argument that childish storytelling like the Harry Potter books can still be entertaining.

Anonymous said...

haven't read the Harry Potter books yet. I've seen all of the movies up to this point. They're okay diversions. I really hate that every one has revolved around a new school contest for Harry to win.

I'd say the action in the new Bond movie is a lot more brutal and realistic than in the past but there isn't an excess of it. There is a lot less of the campy/fun atmosphere of past Bond flicks, which i'm glad of, but it means that young kids might not find it as entertaining. When i was a kid, James Bond meant submarine cars with machineguns in the headlights and over the top villains with shark tanks. If you've seen the Bourne Identity films, that's pretty close to Casino Royale's tone.

I had an older brother and little parental supervision, which meant that i grew up on a steady diet of 80's horror flicks, so i think it's funny that i'd be a little squeemish about letting an 8 year old see the new Bond.

What do I do tonight? Give Mike Holmgren the finger from my livingroom couch and watch MNF or watch Heroes? Decisions, Decisions...

Ralph- said...

here is the thing, casino royale was a great adaptation of a book, the producers had to make some ceative decisions to make the movie work as a movie as did peter jackson for LOTR. i just think that the Potter Movies are not exciting or interesting as films. i bet you anything that i would appreciate the story more if i were to read the books. the movies are just so uniteresting and have no dramatic element to the way the story is layed out. i heard that the 3rd potter film strayed away from the book the most. and that one worked best as a film. you can make a good film, based on a book, but the producers have to realise that they are making a film, and that is key. it needs to work as a film. some great movies based on books LOTR (as stated by aimee) I thought Narnia was great, Die Hard, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, A Beautiful Mind, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Carrie, Psycho, The Silence of the Lambs, The Exorcist, The 39 Steps...the list can go on and on.

My main point is that a good book is only that, a good book. if you take that book and translate it exactly to the screen you get something like The Davinci Code, which was like sitting there watching someone act out a book. i feel that a good film ,based on a book, needs to have some creative licence in order to make the story work.

for a list of more movies based on books. I am surprised at how many movies based on books i like. shit aimee, i might become a reader myself. i love a lot of these movies.

Ralph- said...

by the way, aimee i think you should pop in a dvd or watch heroes.

aimee is lost said...

At this point, I find books much more interesting because there's so much more to "see" and "experience", but I've only been a born-again bookworm for the last six months of my life. Before that, I'd would have rather watched anything on screen than to leave it to my own imagination to visualize anything.

I'm sure there have been plenty of "adaptations" that have been quality films, but I can't be the judge of them unless I've read and seen them all. I guess it all depends on the style of adaptation you're looking for, whether you want a carbon copy like Da Vinci, or something that translates to film like Casino Royale.

Bottom line: I like books, and I like movies. I can be critical sometimes, but I guess I'm just not that picky.

I think I'll just watch Heroes and check on my Packers during commercials. They seem to do a little better when I'm not watching.

Looks nasty in Seattle. Wonder how my boy Shaun is doing.

Jimmy said...

Ah, Steph...

You must be watching the game! It's been the worst November on record. Twelve storms (rain) and now snow. We even made it to the front page of the NYT re the terrible weather we have had. Crazy shit here....

Aimee...
as of now, we are two points behind. Green Bay are wooses anyway...we all know that. The Sea Hawks are much like myself...slow start...big finish :)

Ralph- said...

we just started to get rain, down here. not too bad, but it is rain.

Anonymous said...

Jimmy, you have got to stop watching Bond, that last line was appallingly Roger Moore-esque!

As we've been reduced to talking about the weather: I work at a converted Mill, at the bottom of a valley. Underneath my office flows the river that powered the old mill wheel. Now it's raining a lot. More than it has done for a long time, or so the locals tell me, and the fucking water is everywhere! I swear, i'm going to get to work one day and not be able to get home for a week!

Aimee, my advice to you is to watch American Werewolf in London, i fucking love that movie, and i'm sure Ralph would agree.

Anonymous said...

I hate reading, by the way. Last book i read was Da Vinci Code, and the time before that? Probably The Thirty Nine Steps.... I was 15 or 16, i think. Surely i can't have so few books? Why is there so much shite in my head?
I know i had to write romeo and juliet and all that nonsense, but books ain't my forte.

Anonymous said...

Ha ha! So concerned about getting the html tags right in that last message, i stated that i wrote Romeo and Juliet, which of course i did not. Short bloke with a funny beard did it, not me.
Glad we cleared that up.

Stephanie said...

Just as I wish I liked fish, I wish I were a reader. I tried to read Da Vinci Code. I thought it was a simple book. Too simple. I loved the movie though. Thought it was a great adventure. From what I have read, I'm in the minority.

Stephanie said...

We knew what you meant, jellyman.

It's official. I am a myspace addict.

aimee is lost said...

I had fun sending trash-talking text messages to Jimmy last night since my team was playing in his city...but sad to wake up and find out that my Packers freaking lost. I wasn't feeling good last night so I went to sleep in the 3rd quarter when it was like 21-12 and we were winning. Bummer too, because we were doing so good for a while. Brett Favre is getting old, but he's still bulletproof.

Heroes was good too, I felt so sad for Hiro! He's so cute..poor little fella. I want that one girl's power so I can make cops eat donuts and stuff.

Steph, I became a MySpace addict immediately after my friend introduced me to it. Don't worry though; it eventually fades and becomes just a staple background of your existence rather than a focal point.

Stephanie said...

Yeah, Aimee, I figure myspace will fill the void left by Lost. Within 10 weeks, I will have gotten my fill of it. I have my first myspace stalker. From now on, I won't list where I'm from.

Anonymous said...

Steph,
If you want to add another stalker, i'm at myspace.com/timjellyman.

I do check it a couple of days a week. But i have now gotten over the initial hullabaloo of it all. The other reason i'm less interested in it is because my missus was getting pissed at all my messages being from some chick in Little Rock! (I'm kidding).

I have set up a music page as well, because i wrote a song and have a mate who is producing it, you can all listen and shoot it down when it's ready.

aimee is lost said...

Imagine how Jorge Garcia feels.

Anonymous said...

...with his hands i would have thought?!

Stephanie said...

I thought I requested to befriend you, jellyman. Did I not?

aimee is lost said...

Tim, it's too early for lame humor like that!

Stephanie said...

Trying to split my attention between myspace and Heroes last night, I think I missed some things. Sylar aquired other's powers by eating their brains? Or do we know how? Who is that guy playing Sylar? He looks familiar. Did we find out how they got their powers? Or they just beat us over the head about the powers getting stronger over the past 6 months. I hope I haven't spoiled anyone that hasn't seen it.

aimee is lost said...

From IMDB.com: Sylar is played by a dude named Zachary Quinto, who has had a wide variety of TV roles: 24, Crossing Jordan, Hawaii, Charmed, Six Feet Under, The Agency, Lizzie McGuire, CSI, and some other junk. He does have a face that rings a bell, but now that I've looked him up, I guess I don't know him afterall (I don't watch any of those shows except CSI).

aimee is lost said...

Nevermind. I looked at the CSI episode that he appeared in, and I actually DO remember him from it. He played a mechanic that helped cover up a murder. Go Sylar.

Stephanie said...

I looked at his imdb. I've never watched any of those shows. Maybe one episode of Lizzy McGuire. I guess her just reminds me of somebody else.

jellyman, your girlfriend is gorgeous. What a cute couple you two make.

Ralph- said...

HAWAII was awesome! too bad it got squashed by LOST. i would have loved to see hawaii make it big, or at least make it to DVD.

Anonymous said...

Aimee, sorry about that - remember it was lunchtime for me - still no excuse, still a lame joke!

Steph, you are now a befriended friend. And thanks for the comment about Hannah. As everone's aware, there are some pictures me and Han had done, professionally, a little while back, and we're due to get them now. Then you'll be able to see exactly how photogenic she is, and exactly how staggeringly plain i look!

Jimmy said...

Jellyman,

Got your mail, will reply in earnest. But yes...my last comment was very Roger Moore, sadly. But guess what, we beat those girls from Green Bay!

Hawk City!

I can't believe I'm actually watching American football! What has the Lost Initiative done to me?

I am the sole person at work today due to the blizzard. Kicking back, not breaking my ass. Over and out!

aimee is lost said...

If I knew more football lingo I'm sure I could come up with a better comeback than "girls", but I'm still in football training, so I'll lay low for now. Mike Holmgren can kiss my ass and rot in Seattle, that's all I can say. We were still spanking you pretty good up to the 3rd quarter when I went to bed, so watch the trash talk, pretty boy.

Anonymous said...

Jim, you reminded me - i had to take the track off myspace music - my sound engineer got in a strop and made me take it off. I have got it online though, i'll email you the link in a sec...
However, for those of you eager to see the pics me and Han had done, you may see now! Remember, the photos of photos in frames, so they don't look amazing - and Han won't let me take the pictures out of the frames yet, so i can't scan them! I'll put them up on my blogspot and myspace page, so those of you who know me better can see them there too. Here are the preliminaries anyway:

Sorry i had a rough day yesterday and now i need to play catch up.

Harry Potter book are great for all ages. The later books are deeper then you might think. Ralph is right the movie suck balls. I sware to you Ralph, read the 4th book. he did a lot more then run from the scary vines that were going to hurt him. Sphinx and blast ended scrutes.

Heroes is getting a lot better. I thought this was going to be the Fall Finalle so i am pumped there is a new one next week. Syler was a douche in 24, its cool to see him kinda cool in this. But the whole taking powers is a little too Highlander for me.

Fall Finalle, thanks Lost!!!
