"Every Man For Himself" - Episode Discussion

Well, its time for "Every Man For Himself" (3x04). Let's keep our fingers crossed that this is a good episode. The last thing we need is another incident.

This picture alone makes the episode a hit. WTF is up with that?

aimee is lost said...

If by "incident" you mean a digital attitude overload on the blog, I wouldn't hold that against anyone.

Besides, a shirtless Sawyer always equals a successful episode.

Ralph- said...

i will pummel everyone who defends this episode, if i dont agree with them.

aimee is lost said...

I fear no pummeling. Especially from the Rolph.

Ralph- said...

i thought it was a flute.

pretty good episode

aimee is lost said...

Sawyer was all kinds of shirtless in this episode. Totally obvious mindgame though, that was kind of lame.

I totally shouted out loud "YES!!" when he socked Ben in the jaw. That was fucking awesome.

Sun officially joins the killer club, and we get our first death of season 3!

Lots of predictable shit in this episode, but I don't care, I fucking love this show.

So who has the spinal tumor? ...Ben?...and why can't the island fix that person like it fixed Rose?

Andie

aimee is lost said...

Based on the promo, it looked like Jack was talking to Ben about the tumor, but it happened so fast, I could be wrong. Man around 40 years old sounds about right though.

Excellent question. Especially considering Ben has lived there his whole life.

aimee is lost said...

The dude with the eyepatch, the glass eyeball, the same bunker as the missing Orientation clip...do I smell a Radzinksy comeback?

Ralph- said...

TALE OF TWO CITIES, PUNKS!

Ralph- said...

... AND ALL KINDS OF AWESOME!

Mike Campbell said...

I enjoyed it but that whole two island thingy is weird. you would think that on the boat they would have noticed it. but i can see the "other" island being hidden some by something. That would be very Lost like.

Mike Campbell said...

i mean wait. I should ask Ralph's opinion then i can have an opinion. So please Ralph tell me what to think

Mike Campbell said...

Well the preview showed Eko getting a hachet to the cheek but they wouldn't be that stupid to show who dies would they?

Mike Campbell said...

ooohhh when. give the time so i don't have to listen to the whole thing like last time.

it was about 6-7 minutes in. it was quick, but to the point.

Awesome episode with great character deveopment for the Sawyer character. Not as good as *gasp, Ralph!* "Further Instructions" but still a great episode.

I liked this episode!!!-but like Aimee found it predictable. When Kate went back into her cage I was like, "WTF?!" She and Sawyer don't know that Ben is watching them on his surveillance camera system. But then the speech came "Live Together, Die Alone". Something is definately up with her and her 2 bfs.

PS> I'm glad to see that no bunnies were harmed in the filming of this episode. (That we've been told)

aimee is lost said...

It didn't occur to me until this morning as I was waking up in the shower (no I don't sleep in my shower) - but now the scene seems totally obvious.

The awesome scene where Jack pulls the same move on Juliet that Benry did to Locke. Jack was talking to Juliet like Ben was the one in charge the same way Benry was talking to Locke about Jack being in charge. And both Locke & Juliet had the same responses "that's not how it works here, we make decisions together."

I wonder if Ben hadn't interrupted the whole thing if she would've left the room and thrown some dishes around or something.

God, I love this show.

aimee is lost said...

Yeah, we have an explicit tag for a reason.

Michael R said...

Come on Aimee, don't be a hatter. Remember "What Would Jesus Do?"

Michael R said...

Fuck That! I'm in on the revenge plot. I have a Digital Attitude buildup and I need to unleash it on someone. Count me in!

Ladies and Gentlemen,
please do not talk bad about cliff, he would not be able to handle it. I will listen to the episode and address it on tonights podcast. please do not go and listen to what he has to say.

Ralph- said...

went and listened to it (aka: took a grenade for the team)and it is no big deal. she just called out "steve and scott" for not putting out podcasts anymore. dont worry about it, it is fine.

aimee is lost said...

Um, okay Ralph?

What I'd rather be doing is getting back on the subject of last night's episode, which I'm happy to say I liked very much. I was a little surprised that they let Colleen die, because I thought it might have given Jack a decent bargaining chip had he been able to save her life for them, and made Mr. Pickett a new allie to our captives. But whatever, I'm sure they know what they're doing (the writers).

It doesn't have anything to do really with 3x04, but I was thinking back to the season finale, when Sawyer had shot the Other, and now that we know sort of that there are two factions of them, what if the one he shot one of the other Others? I think maybe he did.

I was also really happy to get a good book reference in this one, because I've always like John Steinbeck, and I thought it was kinda funny that Sawyer was a bookworm even before the island.

Ralph- said...

well, i absolutly loved this episode. there is so much about this episode that i want to talk about sooo much. i t has replaced The Glass Ballerina for my favorite episode of season 3.

there are so many reasons why. i need to watch the episode again and take my notes for tonight's episode.

i liked the fact that when a sawyer episode comes around, i imediatly go into "who's conning who" mode. i dont trust anyone in any Sawyer-centric episode. Sawyer doesnt have a daughter he was conned, the treasurer is in league with cassidy so he was double conned, Henry was conning the conner, Jack was conning the others, kate was conning picket, desmond was conning palo. i get into this different mind set and i get surprised everytime.

this episode was chock full of tense moments. remember when lost was intense? Sawyer's bunny scene, Jack getting taken to the opperating table, picket punching sawyer, sawyer punching ben. I thought that Sawyer was gonna get killed! he is redeemed in his flashback by giving the money to his daughter, and i thought they were gonna take him to look at the other island only to be shot in the back of the head (of mice and men style) there was so many great moments.

there was a lot of intrigue. the spinal x-ray. the two island thing (which i totally called), how did we not see that before? it will be intriguing to find out. is tom really compasionate with Kate? is it another con? are they showing us that tom is a nice guy, only to die due to jack failing to remove the tumor successfully from his spine?

this episode had everything...all that and Mac from Predator!

Jimmy said...

OK...I really liked this episode, maybe got a bit odd or predictable here and there, but I still got into it.

I realize I called her "Connie" instead of Colleen...but still a shame she bought it. I think they played the humanity of the Others quite well.

Kate looked great. Will say though that the bit about "Live together, Die Alone" came close to breaking the fourth wall, I thought?

I really liked Benjamin's dip into Steinbeck. I was wondering who he was channeling there for a bit.

Love Benjamins glasses :)

Agreed with Ralph....must leave the sparrowmeister alone, and I won't listen and dignify a download to him anyway. The fact they mention us means we are a threat/viable competition...better to be talked about than not to be talked about.

Will get back later...

Ralph- said...

my prayers go out to Pepsi Guy and his family, for a good theory that died last night.

aimee is lost said...

I'm checking out the screen shots for that promo, and there is A LOT of shit going down next week. Everyone is in it. I got shivers when that creepy eyepatch dude came up on the screen!

Mike Campbell said...

I'm going to side with there isn't two islands. It was the finish to the con. The perfect way to keep saywer from trying to escape. Benry Knew that Saywer hates swimming, so they tricked him with an optical Illusion.

If there are two Island then there must be some kinda sheild making it so no one can see it. cause desmond must have been sailing around for awhile. you think he would have seen it. I think the others main camp has to be on the main island and the hydra must take up island B.

Ralph- said...

Like a David Copperfield Statue of Liberty thing. that would be awesome. i would love to see that happen.

Anonymous said...

So , if the Benry/Juliet Others do not kill, why did Ethan hang Charlie? And if it wasn't Ethan then who? Maybe the other Others find him as annoying as I do!

Andie

Anonymous said...

the eye-patch guy seemed very The Ring to me. It still scared the pee out of me though.

Andie

Ralph- said...

There has to be Other Others andie. The people that hung charlie are probably the same people that tom and them pretend to be when they put on the beards.

maybe charlie accidently picked up a doll in the jungle and got snared by a trap. and ethan was like forget him, i will let him hang here, cause i need to get this chick back and go work on Juliette's bad pipes.

aimee is lost said...

Good guys don't shake poor defenseless little bunnies in cages. That's messed up.

I really hope that Sawyer gets to kill some more people soon. Wow, I can't believe I just said that.

But seriously, Sawyer's getting worse treatment than anyone else there, and I really really really want him to get some validation for it. All that torture should not go unpunished. I'm trying to decide which hurt worse, the con or the beatings.

Ralph- said...

Sawyer For President of Island 2!

aimee is lost said...

Riddle me this:

What happened to all the "doctors" in white coats from the medical/cadeuceus station that were ready to go all alien autopsy on Claire? Where were they last night when Colleen needed them?

Ralph- said...

claire's memories were fake.

aimee is lost said...

Ralph, if Claire's memories were fake, then why would Alex have asked Michael about her when the Others were holding him?

Jason, I would love to, but that would end up being the worst looking website since I have no talent for web design.

Colleen called him "Danny", not "daddy".

I really liked it when Jack gave Juliet the punch in the gut by saying he didn't care about making her feel better (or whatever it was he actually said.)

Anonymous said...

Jason, do you think that Juliet would be so callous as to revive her friend only to let her die at the hands of Jack in order to test him? That would be shitty, and very Lost like, but I don't know...

Andie
p.s. miss you bro!

Jimmy said...

Jason,

Agreed about Desmond's nice shirt. What was with him and Paulo? What's with Paulo anyway...he seemed like a wanker, and all dressed Eddie Bauer!

So it does seem my theory about Desmond is crap (again), but can I also say that the whole "Des and his lightning rod" bit was the fucking lamest part of the episode.

It was played out poorly, I thought. And also was just a real disappointment. It seemed like they could have had a way more relevant way of him demonstrating his precognition...and are they going to play him as this weirdo who kind of just hangs about?
My opinion...

aimee is lost said...

I'm with Jimmy and the Paulo = wanker theory. Why did they need to hire the "Brazilian Tom Cruise" to do this? What a waste, and yes, annoying also. I hope Desmond's next premonition involves a fistfight & Paulo falling ass-first onto the business end of the nine-iron.

Wow, I'm all sorts of violent today.

Anonymous said...

I kinda liked Paulo's d-bag ways. It explains why he never helped out, EVER, and why we have never seen his way too attractive ass before. But I almost feel that he was too well spoken and in reality he would of ended up taking a leader role before all this. That sense of entitlement doesn't lend itself to letting others make decisions without questioning them loudly. The more I think about him, the more I am intrigued.
And Aimee, I think there already is a nine-iron up there.

Andie

Ralph- said...

why couldnt we get the american tom cruise?

i am fine with more characters. bring it on. i want to see more people get killed and i want to see more people get all crazy in the head like desmond.

i want this show to become flat out bizaar! I want Palo to be struck by lighting while he wastes all the good golf balls on the ocean instead of using the golf course that hurley built.

Eko...i am done with you. i want to see Eko and Bernard in a no holds barred cage match. Put some chicken wire around the church and let them at it! this show is getting so awesome this season guys, i just want it to seriously go into total insanity!

i want the island to become pee wee's playhouse on meth, with Benjamin Linus as our red bow-tie hero!

BRING IT!!!

lost is awesome

aimee is lost said...

I'm just wondering where they're going with these two new characters. So far, I'm really not seeing their value at all. It seems like their jobs could be done by any one of the minor characters we already know, like Rose or Bernard, or whoever.

I will give TPTB the benefit of the doubt that these two actually have some sort of purpose, sit back, and enjoy the ride.

Ralph- said...

TPTB?

aimee is lost said...

dude. the powers that be.

Datty Mike said...

TPTB = The powers that be.

Just finished watching the ep. Loved it.
My prediction is that Jack is gonna turn Juliet, and she's gonna help them escape.

Anonymous said...

i still think that Damon & Carlton were referring to Kelvin & Desmond vs Ben & co. when they said there was atleast 2 groups of others. The fact that Ben didn't know about the boat seems to make them 2 distinct parties. Goodwin seemed to know all about the kidnappings, so i don't really buy the feral others theory.

i really didn't like Pollo (paulo?) or whatshername. They better come up with a purpose for adding them really soon. Right now they're just conspicuous new characters waiting to be placed in peril.

the wide shot from the premier and last night's view of the 2 islands did seem incongruent. i would also have liked to see Sawyer make a play for their guns on their hike after they told him the pacemaker was a con. Ben could have used a little nudge off that hill.

is there going to be a desmond/charlie/claire triangle? i like Desmond too much to seem him thrown into some bullshit like that. He loves Penny and hopefully unlike Sayid he can keep control of his hormones.

andrew.

I think as a season vet it's odd to see suddenly new characters in promos etc who have supposedly "always been there"...

Like the promo next week with the Nikki close up ("What is it"...she sounds like she's stoned, I thought).

So if your just starting to watch...you know no difference. If your a regular it is in your face.
They really need a scene where Nikki says to Locke "So you are dragging us along to a rescue mission...you never asked us before?"

Datty Mike said...

The other option would be for her to say:
"Hi locke, i know i've been keeping myself to myself for the past two months, but now i wanna piece of the action!"

who's the freaky eye patch bloke in the promo?
I vote radzinsky.

Ralph- said...

they looks so happy. Lucky ducks!

aimee is lost said...

I know some people were happy with the subtle introduction to Nikki & Paulo; just slipping them in as though they had been there the whole time, but I really wasn't.

I would've appreciated it more if they'd at least made an effort to be noticed, like having sex in Jack's tent or something. ANYTHING would've been better than running up the way Nikki did, acting like she was part of the A Team, asking where Jack was.

I will feel more satisfied if they throw in some subtle dialogue like Jimmy mentioned, to at least acknowledge to us the reality of the situation. Otherwise it's just a little insulting.

Mike Campbell said...

I know we are skipping ahead an episode but www.comingsoon.net has a thingy about Fillion guest staring on Lost and it gives a little thingy about what is happening in the episode.

In "I Do," Jack makes a decision regarding Ben's (Michael Emerson) offer, Kate feels helpless when it looks like an angry Pickett (Michael Bowen) is going to make good on his threat to kill Sawyer, and Locke (Terry O'Quinn) discovers a hidden message that may guide him through the next steps on his journey to unlocking the secrets of the island.

aimee is lost said...

Be careful with spoiler stuff because Ralph likes to shelter himself from it. Especially about the thing from next week, because I don't think he knows about that one yet.

Ralph- said...

dont worry aimee, i stopped reading at "Thingie". its all good. i know when i have gone too far.

I wish that all of the randos on the island played a game of Red Rover with our A-Team, and Palo and Nikki were thrown in that mix and brought over to the A-Team that way.

aimee is lost said...

Okay, that's good. I was just watchin' your back.

I'm really glad about seeing Sayid in the promo for next week, fixing the Pearl station monitors. Even though he kind of cost them one good sailboat, I still feel strategically safer when he's around!

Ralph- said...

hopefully he gets around eko in time!

aimee is lost said...

Yeah, he won't. But Vincent will show up in the nick of time.

Datty Mike said...

Whats the deal with vincent?
Was he on the boat with michael & walt, or is he on the beach??

aimee is lost said...

I read in some interview or heard somewhere that Carlton said "he got on the boat with Michael & Walt", like one of those things they weren't going to show us, but that Vincent just isn't on the island anymore.

Anonymous said...

i think one of the summer official podcasts had something about the fact that they filmed Vincent getting on the boat with Michael & Walt but that they cut it. i thought that meant that they cut it because they decided they should keep vincent on the island but now i'm thinking he's gone.
sucks, I liked the mysterious vincent.
andrew.

Ralph- said...

maybe he will show up on the beach with an active kill!

I had the weirdest dream abotu Lost last night. Seriously, the whole episode replayed in my dream, except at the very end, I saw another Orientation video. It freaked the SHIT out of me, I'm telling you that. Needless to say, I woke up straight away.

I have a theory though. Well, it's not very good. The tumor that we think is Ben's, isn't anything to do with the others. Or it was someone's, but they died, so they kept it, the sadists. Anyway, they know that Jack was going to see it eventually, because they were definately going to get him into the OR eventually, but it's part of an elaborate manipulation to get his loyalty and utter devotion to help them out to help him off the island. I mean, it just makes sense! They're sick and twisted that way, but that's exactly why I love them so.

Wow, slightly creepy.

And Desmond knows that once he used the key, the electromagnetic force around the island was debunked, so he's trying to get a really primitive form of signal back to the island via golf club number five.

Wow, I've never really had theories before. Go me : )

Oh, enjoyed the episode, too. Yay!

aimee is lost said...

Gillian, that's an awesome dream!

I once had a Lost dream where I was making out with Henry Gale (back when he was still known as that) and he showed me a video of the whole scene and when I saw myself, I wasn't me...I was Libby! It was great. But I haven't been able to look at Michael Emerson without blushing since.

Why didnt anyone hear the conversation that Ben and friendly are having when Sawyer wakes up. I remember them commenting :" since the sky turned purple wheve been blind, our... are all down, I can't get them back up again..." For me its a big revelation. What do you thin about it?

Alex

aimee is lost said...

Andie, I think my eyes were closed, so I don't know if his were...but I imagine they were wide and bulging!

Alex, I emailed Craig about that stuff Tom was saying to Ben. I like to save one thing to email them that no one's mentioned before, so they have something new to talk about if/when they record. That's why I didn't post it on the blog. Just tryin' to help the brothas out.

Darryl Cunningham said...

My strong feeling, based on the way the writers are keen on twisting our expectations in Lost, is that Jack, Sawer and Kate will never escape the Others, but willl join their ranks.

I also suspect that the snide Paulo has been introduced to be a villain and a threat to John Locke's leadership.

Great podcast, by the way. The best of the lot.
